How to cut straight with a circular saw? How to cut deck boards. Installation tools Cutting boards at home

Home >> >>

For carpenters, boards and beams are the most common blanks, from which crafts and wood products are subsequently produced. And the first thing the material undergoes is sawing into pieces of the required length. At the same time, you should know how to saw off a board evenly, because performing this operation incorrectly can ruin the workpiece or significantly affect the appearance, and not for the better.

At large enterprises, the problem of how to saw off a beam or board evenly does not arise. Any serious production facility has high-precision equipment that performs this type of work. At home you have to make do with what you have on hand. At the same time, you still need to be able to use the tool or equipment correctly in order to saw off the board correctly, and the cut turns out without flaws.

Note that many enterprises that sell boards and timber provide cutting services. And for this they use the same specialized equipment, so the purchased material will be cut with high quality. But it is not always possible to use such a service, and it often happens that only one piece needs to be cut.

You can cut a board at home using the following tools and equipment:

  • circular saw;
  • hand saw;
  • angle grinder (“grinder”).

Each of these options has its own specifics, which are important to consider before starting work, that is, you need to know how to cut a beam or board with one or another tool so that the quality of the cut is acceptable.

Circular saw – high performance and ease of use

A circular saw is the best option for performing the work. It has excellent productivity and allows you to cut a considerable number of workpieces in a relatively short time, and with high quality. In addition, such a saw allows you to make a longitudinal cut of the material, but you need to know how to cut the board straight along.

One of the most important criteria when choosing a circular saw is the maximum depth of cut. There are devices on the market that cut materials with a thickness of 30 to 130 mm. That is, you can choose a machine both for cutting only thin boards and for sawing bars.

It is also worth paying attention to the cutting tool itself. Discs with a large number of teeth will provide a neat, high-quality cut, while the cutting speed will be low.

Sawing along the grain.

But discs with a small number of teeth will provide high productivity, but the quality of the cut will also be worse.

Now let's talk about how to cut smoothly with a circular saw. One of the conditions for high-quality work performance is reliable fixation of the workpiece. If the material is loosely fastened, the board may “move” when cutting, and the cut will be uneven.

If the circular saw is hand-held, then all work should be performed on a workbench equipped with stops and guides for workpieces. You can make such a device yourself, using any table as a basis.

Before starting sawing, it is important to set the cutting depth correctly. Some hand saws have an adjustable side guide that can be used to make rip cuts in material. If there is no such device, then use the same workbench.

More convenient in terms of work is a tabletop circular saw, which is already equipped with everything necessary - guides, clamps. Often, such equipment allows you to cut workpieces at an angle.

During the sawing process, it is important not to exceed the force on the tool, otherwise the quality of the cut will be poor, and the increased load on the saw will lead to rapid dulling of the cutting blade.

Do not forget about safety precautions when using such equipment. Work should be carried out only after checking the serviceability of the saw and the correct fastening of the workpiece. Also, do not neglect protective equipment - masks, goggles.

Hacksaw - simplicity and safety

A hacksaw is a simple tool that is quite suitable for the job. And although the cutting speed is low and considerable physical effort is required, such a saw is the most acceptable option for home use.

It is not difficult to cut wood correctly with a hacksaw. The main condition for a high-quality cut of the material is to make the cut correctly. To simplify the task, you can use a regular flat block, which is used as a guide.

The question often arises of how to cut a board smoothly with a hacksaw at an angle. For this purpose, a special carpentry device is used - a miter box. Moreover, it will help not only to make a cut at the desired angle, but will also allow any beginner to cut the board smoothly.

You can also saw off the timber with a hacksaw. The only problem when working with such a workpiece is that you have to put in a lot of effort.

The last option is to use an angle grinder with a wheel with teeth installed for the work. But since the “grinder” is not intended for cutting wood, this method can only be used as a last resort: attempts to cut a board can result in serious consequences. It’s better to use a hacksaw - it’s labor-intensive, but safe.

How to cut a board straight

Timber and boards are common materials used in home construction. If you don’t have the funds for ready-made materials, you can make them yourself using a chainsaw. Before sawing a log into boards with your own hands, it is worth learning more about the features of this process.

The advantage of sawing logs with a chainsaw

Cutting into boards can be done using tools such as an electric chainsaw and additional accessories designed to simplify the work. When choosing certain products, you need to focus on the amount of work expected. Stationary sawmills are expensive and are purchased only if you plan to organize a business to create boards.

The most accessible tool for the job is a chainsaw. Such devices have several advantages over electric ones:

  • the chainsaw can be used anywhere, regardless of the availability of an electrical outlet;
  • the tool is suitable for working in conditions of high humidity;
  • professional chainsaws are significantly more powerful than electric ones;
  • You can use the chainsaw continuously for an hour.

To cut logs into boards, a special frame is used together with a chainsaw, which is attached to the device and allows you to create boards of the same thickness. A device is also needed to secure the log in one position. In addition, you will also need a guide.

Since household gasoline saws are not designed for heavy loads, it is worth using professional tools for sawing logs. When choosing, you should pay attention to devices with a power of more than 7 horsepower. Before work, the fixed frame is adjusted in accordance with the selected width of the boards. To create a frame, you can use legs from a school desk or metal corners.

Types of working attachments

The choice of nozzles for work depends on the volume and type of work performed. The following devices are used with a chainsaw:

  • drum debarker, which is necessary for removing bark from logs;
  • lightweight attachment for sawing logs;
  • standard attachment used to create boards.

Attachment for longitudinal sawing

When using this attachment, sawing occurs in a horizontal direction. It is fixed to the rail using special clamps and allows you to create boards of equal thickness. After the work is completed, the boards are dried and can then be used in construction.

Lightweight nozzle

Such devices are often used, but they should only be used when creating boards for fences or sheds. This is due to the fact that the attachment is secured to the tire only on one side.

Ocarivator

The attachment for removing bark from logs is used using a clinometer transmission. Attachment occurs with belts - special pulleys are used for this.

How to cut a log into boards with your own hands and not spoil the materials

It is worth noting that the performance of the nozzle can be changed, since the shaft rotation speed depends on the size of the pulleys.

Features of sawing logs using a chainsaw

Creating additional equipment for sawing logs is quite simple:

  1. To create a support, a frame is used, which can be created from the legs of a school desk. The most suitable are pipes with a square cross-section of 20x20 mm.
  2. When constructing the frame, it is necessary to create 2 clamps and secure a cross member at one end. This element must have holes for tightening bolts. A protrusion for the tire is created in the middle.
  3. In order to saw a log lengthwise, it is necessary to construct a support frame, the width of which must be at least 8 cm less than the length.
  4. For ease of operation, a handle should be welded to the frame.
  5. Before carrying out work, you must carefully check whether the frame is securely fastened to the tire.

Using a homemade tool is quite simple. Before sawing, you need to install 2 sawhorses - they will be used as a support for the log. In addition, a metal strip or flat board is prepared, which will serve as a guiding element.

Long sawing technique

The most difficult stage of the process is making the first cut. To do this you need:

  • install a leading ruler, which consists of two boards that are fastened together at an angle of 90 degrees;
  • after this, it is necessary to place the sawn log on the supports and fix it;
  • then it is important to check whether the log is level;
  • at the next stage it is necessary to secure the leading ruler to the supports using self-tapping screws;
  • After this, you can start creating the first cut.

Features of cross cuts

Cross cutting is used only to create firewood or interior elements. The work is carried out according to several principles:

  1. Before carrying out work, the log is placed in a horizontal position on supports. The height of its location should be 0.5 m.
  2. After this, it is necessary to completely clear the log of bark.
  3. At the next stage, it is necessary to make marks on the entire log, located at an equal distance from each other.
  4. Then, cutting can be done using the created marks.

Cross cutting does not require specialized tools.

Safety rules during work

To avoid injury, you must follow these basic guidelines:

  1. Before using a power tool, you must carefully read the instructions included in the kit.
  2. Since a chainsaw is a dangerous tool, work should not be carried out while intoxicated or sick.
  3. You need to hold the saw with both hands. A secure grip will allow you to control the movement of the tool and maintain its position during unexpected jerks and in the event of kickback.
  4. There should be no fuel mixture or oil on your hands while working, as this reduces the reliability of your grip.
  5. Do not use the saw if it is damaged, not fully assembled or not adjusted.
  6. There should be no children or animals on the site during work.
  7. Unless you have special skills, you should not use a chainsaw on stairs or other unstable surfaces.
  8. Do not cut with your arms outstretched or above shoulder level.

By following the described rules, the risk of injury is significantly reduced.

Tools

When cutting various materials and making blanks for building structures, an even cut is necessary. On an industrial scale, this is achieved using large professional machines. But how to achieve an even cut using hand tools?

The most suitable tool for smooth cutting is a circular saw. For precision cutting, circular saws are equipped with special grooves that are located on the soles of the saw. As a rule, these are two grooves (notches), one for cutting workpieces at an angle of 90 degrees, and the second at an angle of 45 degrees.

After we have marked the cutting line, we place the slot on the line and run the saw along the marked line. In order to prevent sawdust from getting on the cutting line, in many saws the air flow from the electric motor fan is directed to the slot.

It must be said that some models of saws have special lasers that are not interfered with by sawdust, so the laser beam falls on the workpiece from above. In addition, circular saws are equipped with a special stop, which has a ruler, thanks to which you can set the width of the workpiece and, relying on the smooth edge of the board, make an accurate cut.

When cutting boards crosswise, you can use special devices that can be adjusted to different angles. Some professional series saws are equipped with a special groove in the sole. This groove overlaps the guide rail. The saw slides along the bar and makes an even cut.

For simpler models, circular saws, it is best to use a flat blade. The rail needs to be secured to the board with two clamps. After this, resting on the rail with the edge of the circular saw sole will help you make a precise cut.

When making a homemade guide, you can use both improvised means made on commercial machines and aluminum rules. In this case, you can make a special stand with three bearings or stops, which can then be attached to the sole of the circular saw. The stops or bearings will slide smoothly according to the rule and this will be a guide for making an even cut. Author RVT

Almost every new project begins with the dismantling of unedged boards. This time I unraveled the oak boards, which I got completely free, but having been lying on the street for many years, they were not in the best condition. A couple of deep cracks, blackening and ingrained sand - these defects had to be eliminated in the process of preparing the wood for further processing.

The first thing to do is to make sure that there is no sand, nails or other foreign objects in the material being processed. For example, a wire brush works well with sand. There are even special miniature metal detectors for finding hidden nails. But there is also a budget option - a magnet on a string (preferably a rare earth one from a hard drive). We swing the magnet on a string above the surface of the wood and in places where the nails fall into the magnetic field, the magnet changes the frequency and trajectory of vibration. This is how we detect hidden nails even with a broken head.

The next stage will require creativity. The amount of waste and losses from the material depends on it. For optimal dissolution with a minimum of losses, it is necessary to decide on the strategy of each individual board. The strategy depends on your needs and the board itself - the location and depth of cracks, wane, and the curvature of the board itself. Having decided on the strategy, we draw the first cut. To do this, you can use a lace, a tape measure, a ruler, or a long strip.

Next we make the first cut. You can unravel the board with almost any tool capable of sawing wood, as long as the thickness of the cut is sufficient. You can cut with a hand-held circular saw or a hand-held jigsaw, on a bench saw, on a band saw or even with a chain saw. Without forgetting about safety. The rule here is simple: the more accurately the cut, the less waste during further processing. I used a saw. A line is marked on the board along which the saw blade should pass.
You have to guide the board manually. You need to guide the saw blade along the line as accurately as possible.

The board can be twisted with a screw and during wiring it can “walk” relative to the plane of the table. Because of this, the saw blade can jam and burns occur. This is especially true when dissolving large pieces of heavy wood. Therefore, it is advisable that the drive to the disk be belt driven and not direct, and you should not rush when wiring the board. When pointing the board at the saw blade, do not forget about safety precautions - use pushers when working near the blade, do not work with gloves, push rather than pull workpieces and other safe work rules.

After completing the first cut, we place a longitudinal stop and unravel the board into lamellas in the usual way.

We receive material that is not yet suitable for work.

Therefore, the next important stage of work is jointing. The slats can have depressions and humps, and can be twisted with a screw. The angles between the edges and faces may not be straight. To eliminate all these shortcomings, jointing is needed. Of course, it is best to have a specialized tool. But the reality is that the prices for a single jointer are steep, especially if we are talking about an amateur hobby workshop. Therefore, craftsmen come up with different devices for performing this operation: they plane small workpieces on a milling table, assemble special carriages for electric planers, insert electric planers into the table, and use manual jointers. There are craftsmen who joint on a circular saw. Some people assemble homemade jointing machines from plywood. There are many talented people in our country who post their products on the Internet and from whom you can learn a lot.
I was lucky in this regard. I have a jointer in my workshop. You can read about his choice here:
The idea of working on a jointer is simple - we take the workpiece, press it against the side stop, and pass it over the knife shaft. In this case, we press the part of the workpiece that is on the receiving table against the table, and the part that is still on the feeding table is pushed forward using a pusher.

With each new wiring, layer by layer we remove excess wood.

In this case, you can observe how irregularities appear

At the same time, in order to reduce the effect of “waves” on the surface, you need to reduce the feed speed and try to make it uniform.

Usually, due to waste, the thickness of the resulting workpiece is 5-8 mm less than the original thickness of the unedged board. It depends on the tool used, the condition of the wood, the accuracy of the worker and a thousand other factors.

Having finished with one face, we joint the adjacent one, not forgetting to press the aligned face against the side stop. As a result, on each workpiece we get two even layers with a right angle between them. We mark the treated surfaces and edges with a pencil.

At this point, the task of dissolving the unedged board can be considered solved. The resulting workpieces are suitable for further processing on a circular saw, on a milling table, on a surface planer and other machines and tools, where the workpieces are pressed against stops and tables, now with even faces with right angles.

It is distinguished by its high hardness: cutting it with ordinary larch discs will certainly work, but the process may take a little longer. Ordinary wood, familiar to us, does not have such indicators of hardness and resistance.

For successful cutting, WPC logs, trimming of composite steps and other products, appropriate components for tools are used.

It is worth noting that the wood-polymer composite is processed mechanically in much the same way as wood we are used to. It can be sawed (cut) to the required length, and holes can be drilled in the board for installation. Some even manage to cut unusual shapes from solid WPC boards. But now we are not talking about masters of their craft.

To work with decking boards and composite logs, you will need:

  • Circular saw for cutting PVC or chipboard,
  • Saws with fine tooth blades,
  • Carbide wheels,
  • Drill,
  • Carbide drills,
  • Screwdriver,
  • Screwdriver,
  • Level,
  • Hammer,
  • Roulette,
  • Pencil or construction chalk.

Almost everyone who has already built a country house and is now engaged in landscaping their site has all the tools listed above. As mentioned above, the most important thing is to choose the appropriate cutting discs and drill bits.

When starting installation work, you first need to cut the joists for the supporting structure. If you are using WPC joists, as the manufacturers recommend, all holes are pre-drilled. Mark the points on the joist where you need to make a mounting hole, use a drill. It is better not to use a screwdriver for this purpose, even if it is very powerful: there is a risk of overheating the device or even breaking it.

Next, you should lay and secure the logs, having first checked the slope with a building level. Do not forget that decking boards, especially in open areas, must be laid with a slight slope of 1-2 °. Excess moisture will drain from the terrace, and puddles will not form on the board.

Installation of WPC decking boards is not difficult thanks to special fastenings - clips. You will need a screwdriver to secure the clip with a screw into the joist. Remember that the screw is not screwed in all the way: too tight a fastening can negatively affect the “behavior” of the clip and the board during thermal expansion. But the fastening should not be loose, otherwise the boards will sway.

Sometimes a solid decking board made of WPC, bamboo or ipe is directly mounted to the joists with self-tapping screws. In order to facilitate this process, professional installers make holes in the boards and joists in advance. There is one small trick here: the holes should be made with a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw. This way, the tightness of the fastening is not compromised, and the installation process is faster.

Unedged board is a material obtained from wood processing. The main difference is the uneven edges and unaesthetic appearance. Due to its low cost, unedged boards are most often used as a basis for designer cladding or as a material for the manufacture of edged boards. Using special saws and other tools, this process can even be carried out independently. We will try to explain in detail how to make an edged board. This process is quite simple, but requires maximum attention, since some actions will need to be done “by eye”.

How to make an edged one from an unedged board

How to make an edged board from an unedged board at home? The process involves trimming the wane. This is the uneven edge of the material on which tree bark is present. Next, you should align the sides, relying on your vision. The tools used for this work should be available to any specialist:

  • stationary circular saw;
  • colored pencil and ruler (in some cases, nylon thread is used);
  • protection for eyes, face and hands (goggles, respirator mask and gloves).

To carry out work on obtaining edged boards, you need to select an appropriate place. It is best to do this on the street, just make sure that no one is near you. To begin, place the work table comfortably, place the board on it and begin marking. Using a pencil or thread, draw straight lines on both sides so that any irregularities can be easily trimmed. Clear markings are the key to success in obtaining a flat board, which will not bring you any convenience during further use.

Pruning must be done very carefully so that the cut is even. Of course, you can buy a ready-made edged board on the market, but in order to save money, the option of cutting it yourself is perfect. When working you need to be be extremely careful and follow safety rules to prevent negative consequences for your health.

Where is edged board used?

Edged boards are highly popular due to the following qualities:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • reliability;
  • durability;
  • ease of processing.

The main area of application of this lumber is, of course, construction. The board copes well with finishing work and also serves as an excellent basis for attaching other materials. It is further used in the construction of wooden houses, windows, wooden doors, furniture, as well as various small floor elements. Boxes and pallets are made from edged boards, which are manufactured with inaccuracies and have deviations from the standard.

A high-quality edged board will serve you for a very long time and will not cause problems after finishing. Grade 1 lumber can be purchased right now on our website. We took care of their quality and guarantee that our edged boards will not let you down in any type of work with it.
