HOLY ARCHANGEL RAPHAEL

The month of November was chosen for the Feast of the Angels because it is the ninth from March, which was once the beginning of the year, and the number nine corresponds to the nine ranks of angels.

According to the Holy Scriptures and tradition, the following Archangels are known: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Yehudiel, Barachiel and Jeremiel. But they are not called Archangels in the proper sense, but belong to the order of Seraphim, and they are called Archangels as the leaders of the angelic forces. They are the highest of the Seraphim, the closest to God (Denisov L. Phenomena and miracles of the holy seven Archangels. M., 1901).

“Grace to you and peace from Him who is and was and is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before His throne,” we read in the Revelation of St. John the Theologian (Rev. 1, 4). These seven spirits are the seven Archangels.

Archangel Raphael is a healer of human ailments, a guide, and a doctor of God.

The name Raphael translated from Hebrew means help, healing of God, healing of God, healer of human ailments (Tov. 3, 17; 12, 15).

Archangel Raphael, physician of human ailments, comforter of the sorrowing, is mentioned in the Holy Scriptures. There is a whole book called “The Book of Tobit”, which describes how the Archangel Raphael, in the form of a young man, accompanied the righteous Tobias, protected him from unexpected misfortunes on the way, freed Sarah, daughter of Raguil, from the evil spirit of Asmodeus, gave her to Tobias as his wife, son of Tobit, removed the thorn from Tobit (Tov.3, 16-17; 5.4-6; 6.8-9; 7.2-3; 11, 6-7, 10-13; 12, 6-7; 14, 15, 18).

Setting out from the house of Tobit, Tobias and Raphael came in the evening to the Tigris River. When Tobias wanted to swim, a fish appeared from the river and wanted to swallow him, but Raphael said to Tobias: “Take this fish, cut it, take out the heart, liver and gall, and save them.” Tobiah did just that. To his question - what is this liver, heart and bile from fish for? Raphael answered: “If someone is tormented by a demon or an evil spirit, then he should smoke with his heart and liver in front of such a man or woman, and he will no longer be tormented, but anoint the person who has a thorn in his eyes with gall, and he will be healed.”

When they came to Ecbatana, where Sarah, the daughter of Raguel, lived, whose seven suitors were destroyed by the evil spirit Asmodeus, they were well received in the house of Raguel. Raguel gave Sarah his daughter to wife Tobiah. Tobias, entering the bedroom, took the incense burner, put the heart and liver of the fish and smoked. The demon, hearing this smell, fled to the upper countries of Egypt.

When Tobiah, his wife Sarah and Raphael went back to Nineveh, where Tobit lived, Raphael said: “I know, Tobiah, that your father’s eyes will be opened: just anoint his eyes with bile, and he, feeling the acridity, will wipe them, and the thorns will fall away, and he will see you.”

Tobiah applied gall to his father’s eyes and said: “Be of good cheer, my father!” His eyes were stuck and he wiped them, and the eyesores were removed from the edges of his eyes and he saw his son Tobias.

When Tobit wanted to give Tobiah’s companion half of the silver he had brought in gratitude, Raphael, calling Tobit and Tobiah aside, said to them: “Bless God, glorify Him, recognize His greatness and confess before all the living what He has done for you... The secret is fitting for the king.” to preserve, and to announce the works of God is commendable. Do good, and evil will not befall you... Now God has sent me to heal you and your daughter-in-law Sarah. I am Raphael, one of the seven holy Angels who offer the prayers of the saints and ascend before the glory of the Holy One... I came not by my own free will, but by the will of our God; therefore bless Him forever.”

The words spoken by Archangel Raphael during separation from Tobit’s family are also very instructive: “a good deed is prayer with fasting and almsgiving and justice. Better is a little with justice than a lot with unrighteousness; It is better to give alms than to collect gold, for alms delivers from death and can cleanse all sin. Those who do alms and deeds of righteousness will live long. Sinners are the enemies of their own lives.” Tobit and Tobiah were embarrassed and fell face down on the ground because they were afraid. But Raphael told them: “Do not be afraid, peace will be with you. Bless God forever... So now glorify God, because I ascend to Him who sent me, and write everything that has happened in a book. And they got up and saw him no more.”

Therefore, whoever wants to be worthy of the heavenly help of Archangel Raphael must himself be merciful to those in need. Moreover, the virtues of mercy and compassion should distinguish those who bear the name of Raphael - otherwise they will not have a spiritual union with the Archangel.

The Holy Church depicts Archangel Raphael holding a vessel with medical remedies in his slightly raised left hand and leading Tobias with his right hand, carrying fish caught in the Tigris River.

Prayer to Archangel Raphael

Oh, Great Holy Archangel Raphael, stand before the Throne of God! By the grace given to you by the Almighty Physician of our souls and bodies, you healed the righteous man Tobit from bodily blindness, and you saved his son, Tobias, from an evil spirit while traveling with him. I earnestly pray to You, be my guide in my life, save me from all visible and invisible enemies, heal my mental and physical illnesses, guide my life towards repentance of sins and the creation of good deeds. Oh, great holy Raphael the Archangel! Hear me, a sinner, praying to you, and make me worthy in this and the future life to thank and glorify our common Creator for endless centuries. Amen. (From an ancient manuscript).

Troparion, tone 4

Heavenly armies of the Archangel, we always pray to you, we are unworthy, and with your prayers protect us with the shelter of your immaterial glory, preserving us, falling diligently and crying out: deliver us from troubles, like the commander of the highest powers.

Kontakion, tone 2

Archangel of God, servant of the Divine glory, ruler of angels and teacher of men, ask for what is useful to us and great mercy, like the bodiless Archangel.

HOLY ARCHANGEL URIEL

Archangel Uriel is the fire or light of God, the enlightener of the darkened and ignorant, the enlightener of mental and physical feelings, the mentor of the lost, the motivator to prayer.

The name Uriel translated from Hebrew means light or fire of God, enlightener (3 Ezra 5:20).

Uriel, being the radiance of the Divine fire, is the enlightener of the darkened. As an Angel of light, he enlightens the minds of people with the revelation of truths that are useful to them; like the Angel of Divine Fire, he inflames hearts with love for God and destroys impure earthly attachments in them.

Archangel Uriel is written about in the Third Book of Ezra (3 Ezra 4, 1-50; 5).

Archangel Uriel was sent by God to Ezra to offer him three likenesses and show him three ways:

“If you explain one of them to me, then I will show you the path that you want to see, and I will teach you where the evil heart came from. Then I said: speak, my lord. He said to me: go and weigh the weight of the fire, or measure the blow of the wind for me, or return to me the day that has already passed. What kind of person, I answered, can do what you ask of me? And he said to me: if I asked you how many dwellings are in the heart of the sea, or how many springs are in the very foundation of the abyss, or how many lived above the firmament, or what are the limits of paradise, perhaps you would have told me: “into the abyss I I never went down, nor did I go to hell, nor did I ever ascend to heaven.” Now I asked you only about the fire, the wind and the day that you experienced, and about what you cannot be without, and you did not answer me. And he said to me: you cannot know what is yours and with you from youth; How could your vessel contain the path of the Most High and in this already noticeably corrupted age understand the corruption that is obvious in my eyes? (3 Rides 4, 4-11):

Archangel Uriel answered this to Ezra: “Stand on the right side, and I will explain to you the meaning by likeness. And I stood and saw: behold, a burning furnace passed before me; and when the flame passed, I saw that smoke remained. After this, a cloud filled with water passed before me, and heavy rain poured out of it; but as soon as the rapidity of the rain stopped, drops remained. Then he said to me: think to yourself: just as rain is more than drops, and fire is more than smoke, so the measure of the past has been exceeded, but drops and smoke remain” (3 Ezra 4:47-50).

With these words, Archangel Uriel pointed out to Ezra that the time of the Redeemer’s coming to earth was near, that from his time until the coming of the Savior there were few years left, significantly less than from the creation of the world to the time of Ezra, who lived in the fifth century BC. So, Archangel Uriel is the servant of the light of truth, the enlightener of the darkened, the mentor of the lost, the instigator of prayer.

People devoted to science are your Archangel! Do not forget, following his example, to be servants not only of the light of truth, but also of the fire of Divine love. As the holy Apostle Paul said: “The understanding boasts, but the love creates” (1 Cor. 8:1). Saint Archangel Uriel is depicted holding right hand, against the chest, there is a naked sword, and in the left, lowered down, there is a fiery flame, which marks a particularly strong zeal for the God of this Archangel.

HOLY ARCHANGEL SELAPHIL

Archangel Selaphiel (Salafiel) is God’s prayer book, always praying to God for people and encouraging people to pray, prayer book for the salvation and health of people.

The name Selafiel, translated from Hebrew, means prayer to God, God’s prayer book, encouraging prayer.

It is written about this Archangel in the Third Book of Ezra: “And it came to pass on the second night that Salafiel, the leader of the people, came to me...” (3 Rides 5, 16).

Archangel Selaphiel appeared to Hagar in the desert while she was praying in deep sorrow. He told her: “. . The Lord has heard your suffering. . ." (Gen. 16:11).

According to the belief of the Church, the holy Archangel Selaphiel also appeared to Hagar in the desert of Bathsheba, when Abraham expelled her. In the book of Genesis it is narrated as follows: “Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it to Hagar, placing it on her shoulders, and to the lad, and sent her away. She went and got lost in the wilderness of Beersheba; and there was no water in the skin, and she left the boy under one bush and went and sat down at a distance, one shot from a bow. For she said: I don’t want to see the boy die. And she sat down at a distance opposite him, and raised a cry and wept; and God heard the voice of the lad from where he was; and the Angel of God from heaven called to Hagar and said to her: What is the matter with you, Hagar? don't be afraid; God heard

the voice of the youth from where he is; Arise, lift up the lad and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation. And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of living water, and she went and filled a bottle with water and gave the boy a drink. And God was with the boy; and he grew..." (Genesis 21: 14-20).

So, the Lord gave us a whole face of prayerful Angels, with their leader Selafiel, so that with the pure inspiration of their lips they would warm our cold hearts to prayer, so that they would instruct us about what, when and how to pray, so that they would lift up our very offerings to the throne of grace.

Saint Archangel Selaphiel is depicted with his face and eyes bowed down and with his hands folded in prayer on his chest, as is the case with a person tenderly praying.

Seeing the Archangel of prayer himself in this position, let us try ourselves during prayer to always be in a position appropriate for the one praying.

HOLY ARCHANGEL JEHUDIEL

Archangel Jehudiel is the patron of those who strive and monastics, the glorifier of God, strengthening those who work for the glory of God and interceding for reward for their exploits and labors, an assistant and mentor in work, an intercessor on the way, a helper to those in need of anything for the glory of God.

Each of us, from young to old, is obliged to live and work for the glory of God. On our sinful earth, no good deed is accomplished except with difficulty, and many with great and difficult effort. But our Lord and Master will not forget any of our deeds or any labor of love in His name (Heb. 6:10).

The name Yehudiel translated from Hebrew means “glorifying God, praising God.”

According to the belief of the Church, based on Holy Tradition, the Holy Archangel Jehudiel is one of the seven Archangels, who, at the command of God, patronized the Israelites on their journey during their 40-year wandering, and the name Jehudiel is also given to that Angel who preceded the Israelites in the pillar of fire and cloud. leaving Egypt, protecting them from their pursuers: “And the Angel of God, who walked before the camp of the children of Israel, moved and went behind them; The pillar of cloud also moved from before them and stood behind them; and he entered into the middle between the camp of Egypt and between the camp of the children of Israel, and was a cloud and darkness for some and illuminated the night for others, and the one did not come close to the other all the night” (Ex. 14: 19-20).

When Moses, after forty days of fasting and prayer, ascended Mount Sinai, God appeared to him and, handing over the tablets of the covenant, gave him the law that the people of Israel had to observe. And the Lord said: “Behold, I am sending My angel before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared for you; watch yourself before His face and listen to His voice; do not persist against Him, for He will not forgive your sin, for My name is in Him” (Ex. 23:20-21). “...When My angel goes before you and leads you to the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, and I destroy them from before you, then do not worship their gods, and do not serve them” (Ex. 23, 23-24 ).

So, the ministry of Archangel Jehudiel is to strengthen people who work for the glory of God and to intercede for reward for their exploits.

The holy Archangel Jehudiel is depicted holding a golden crown in his right hand, and in his left hand a scourge of three black ropes with three ends - this signifies the reward from God to pious and holy people and punishment to sinners.

HOLY ARCHANGEL BARACHIL

Archangel Barachiel, according to the belief of the Church, is one of the three Angels who appeared to Abraham at the oak of Mamre. He predicted the birth of Isaac to Abraham and Sarah and confirmed the promise of salvation given by God in paradise to the entire human race in the person of Adam.

The Holy Archangel Barachiel is a giver of God's blessings to people for good deeds and an intercessor, asking people for God's mercy and God's blessing to lead their lives in mental health and salvation, the patron of pious families, the guardian of the purity of soul and body.

The name Barachiel translated from Hebrew means “blessed by God, blessing of God.”

Archangel Barachiel is depicted carrying white roses on his chest, on his clothes, as a harbinger of bliss in the Kingdom of Heaven, and Archangel Barachiel himself is, as it were, a harbinger of bliss and endless peace in the Kingdom of Heaven.

HOLY ARCHANGEL JEREMIEL

Archangel Jeremiel is the instiller of good and kind thoughts, the lifter of souls to God, the lifter of God's mercy to God.

The name Jeremiel, translated from Hebrew, means exaltation to God, the height of God.

About the Holy Archangel Jeremiel in the Third Book of Ezra it is written like this: “Didn’t the souls of the righteous inquire about the same thing in their seclusions, saying: “How long will we hope in this way?” And when is the fruit of our retribution? To this Jeremiel the Archangel answered me: “When the number of the seeds in you is fulfilled, for the Most High has weighed this age in scales, and measured the times with a measure, and numbered the hours by number, and will not move or speed up until the certain measure is fulfilled” ( 3Ezra 4:35-37), i.e. the future age will come only when the number of dead righteous people reaches a certain limit. This answer is given to them by the Archangel Jeremiel (the Apocalypse of John the Theologian gives the exact number of those sealed from all the tribes of Israel, namely 144,000 (7, 4)). All nine angelic orders will gather on the day Last Judgment Lord, when “the Son of Man comes in His glory and all the holy angels with Him,” “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven, coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory; and He will send His angels with a loud trumpet, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other (Matt. 24:30-31). And then they will hear the chosen words of the Savior of the world: “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:34).

Prayer to the Holy Angels

To you, as the intercessor and guardian of my life, I am a damned one, falling down, I pray: grant me with your prayers a day's stay, in a godly and unskillful way to pass away from evil deeds and thoughts. Open my ears, so that I may hear and understand the deeds and words of God that are beneficial to my soul, so that I may see my inner eyes, overwhelmed by the darkness of sin. Pray for me, who sins all the time, so that the sword of the wrath of the Lord does not girdle me: for my iniquity has exceeded my head, and like a heavy burden has weighed down on me. But You, my Lord, look upon me, and have mercy on me, and bring my sinful soul out of prison, before I even leave here, and I will not come to Your Last Judgment. Receive Thy holy Angels praying for us, who stand around Thy throne with fear, and with those prayers, more than the Most Pure Mother, deliver me from Thy terrible and terrible judgment. For you are the Lamb of God, taking away the sins of the whole world, crucified on our cross for the sake of salvation; listen to my prayer, and send the Guardian Angel of my soul and body, so that we instruct that I will get rid of all enemies, visible and invisible, and I will be worthy to receive Your mercy, with all those who have pleased You from the beginning, for You are our God, and I resort to You, and I trust in You, even though men have sinned more, but I have not retreated from You, nor have I lifted up my hand to another god, I pray to You, Lord Jesus Christ, I will bless You, and I worship You from the One Trinity, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen. (From the canon).

Interviewed by Tofiliy Dymny

Legends about the role of the personality of Peter I in the economic development of Arkhangelsk, as a rule, have nothing to do with reality

Instead of studying history, it is often raped in our country to please stereotypes. As in the Soviet years, Russian schoolchildren are given mythologized assessments of the role of historical figures.

In the last issue of the newspaper we published material “Petrovsky or Lomonosovsky?”(No. 6 (15) dated April 12 this year). There were, as they say, more than enough calls to the editor. The townspeople expressed different opinions, sometimes opposing and categorical. But everyone wanted to know the truth about Peter the Great’s attitude towards Arkhangelsk, and today the well-known northern local historian, publicist, member of the presidium of the Arkhangelsk regional All-Russian Society for the Protection of Historical Monuments and Ivan Moseev.

– Now all official Russian historians claim that Arkhangelsk is not the birthplace of the Russian fleet, because Peter I created the first fleet not in Arkhangelsk, but in Voronezh. Is it so?

– Today, the myth that it was Peter who built the first Russian shipyards and ships has been brought to the point of absurdity. Arkhangelsk, as the recognized homeland of Russian navy, in the history of Russia no longer exists! All of Russia considers Pereslavl-Zalessky to be the birthplace of the fleet. The average person blindly believes the official historical myths and does not think about the fact that in Arkhangelsk, long before Peter built the first ships in Voronezh, there were already shipyards and, of course, a huge fleet of fishing and merchant Pomeranian vessels at that time. Peter would not have been able to create his fleet without Arkhangelsk and the Pomors. It was impossible to recruit experienced shipbuilders from the landowner peasants of central and southern Russia. Therefore, without having the maritime experience of Pomors, Peter I would have been swimming in his amusing ponds for many years to come.

Arkhangelsk shipyard during the years of Peter I

– But the role of the tsar in the history of our region is difficult to overestimate. Or have we been misled here too?

– Many Arkhangelsk residents who fell under the influence of the mythology about Peter I are sure that it was with him that the rapid flourishing of Arkhangelsk began. But this deepest delusion. Do the residents of Arkhangelsk know that even the Solombala State Shipyard was founded not by Peter I at all, but in 1581? And in 1602, Tsar Boris Godunov built sea ships at this shipyard. So the shipyard in Solombala worked long before Peter’s arrival in Arkhangelsk. Peter simply used a ready-made Pomeranian resource and in the process killed many people. The consequences of his reforms were especially hard on Arkhangelsk.

Construction of ships in Arkhangelsk. Beginning of the 18th century

– Which decrees of Peter hit Arkhangelsk especially hard?

– According to the decrees of Peter I in 1719 and 1724. The free Pomeranian black-growing peasantry was deprived of their freedoms, granted by Ivan the Terrible, and transferred to the category of state peasants. By his decrees, Peter forbade the Pomors to build traditional sea fishing vessels and demanded that they build ships in the manner of foreign ones. Many of these European ships were not suitable for sailing in our northern seas. This also undermined marine fisheries. In addition, not everyone could afford to build European hookers and schooners.

- And what happened to the Pomeranian fisheries in this case?

– Peter handed them over to his profit-makers and monopoly companies. This meant that the indigenous Pomors were forbidden to fish and kill sea animals, which is why famine reigned in Pomerania during lean years. In the middle of the 18th century, peasants of the Kovskaya volost wrote:

“Due to the lack of salmon fisheries... we are not able to pay per capita money, and in extreme cases we have come to despair and are enduring great hunger; we eat for food... rotten wood and white moss.”.

– Everyone knows that there has never been a . How did Peter react to this fact?

“Peter did not stand on ceremony with people; he was of little interest that the Pomors were not serfs. If he needed slaves, he simply turned his subjects into them. In 1712, Peter I took 500 Pomors to serve in the navy, in 1713 - 550, in 1715 - 2000. Moreover, he took the best, young workers, dooming their families to starvation, ruin and poverty. Thousands of families then lost their breadwinners. In a personal decree to the Arkhangelsk governor dated October 9, 1714, Peter I writes:

“In the Sumy fortress, on the Mezen and in other places where there are the best workers who go to the sea for fishing and animal hunting on kochkas, recruit 500 sailors, and so that they are not old, not crippled, namely, so that they are not old over 30 years old".

Cruelty and contempt for his subjects, mockery of the traditional culture of the indigenous people were an integral feature of Peter I.

– Is it true that Peter I did not consider the Nenets reindeer herders to be people at all and treated them literally like animals?

– This is what the “enlightened autocrat” wrote in his own hand to the Arkhangelsk vice-governor P.E. Lodyzhensky January 11, 1717:

“Mr. Lieutenant Governor. Upon receipt of this decree, find two Samoyeds (i.e. Nenets) young guys who would be ugly-faced and funnier, between 15 and 18 years old, in their dress and headdress, as they walk according to their custom, who should be sent as a gift Granduke Florensis. And when you find them, immediately give them to the person who announces this letter of ours to you. Peter".

The fact that the Nenets are not animals, but people, did not bother Peter I at all. But this cannot but worry modern residents of Arkhangelsk. After all, honoring Peter I in Arkhangelsk is offensive both to the Pomors and to the residents of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, with which Arkhangelsk is establishing relations.

– Why is the image of Peter still popular in Arkhangelsk?

The film “Peter and Peter” is just a few answers to hundreds of questions about the real deeds of the one who today is called Peter “The Great”. This is an attempt to pose the most necessary questions and search for truthful answers to them, and not the stupidity and obvious lies that our historians and politicians give. The film is based on materials from academician N.V. Levashova, E.T. Baida and some other authors...

We know about the existence of the Heavenly Angelic World from the Holy Scriptures. That he was created by God even before the creation of the visible world and man. We know that the number of Angels is innumerably large and that the Wisdom of God established an amazing order in this Heavenly army, creating an angelic hierarchy, dividing all Angels into nine ranks of three ranks in the hierarchy, subordinating the lower ranks to the higher.

Angels differ from each other both in their enlightenment and in their varying degrees of grace.

Higher hierarchy Those directly close to God are Angels who bear the names: Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones. Seraphim According to their name, they have hearts flaming with love for God, and they also excite others to ardently love their Creator. Seraphim means "fiery".

Cherubim have fullness of vision and abundance of wisdom. They are illuminated by abundant rays of God's light. It is given to them to know everything to the extent that created beings can know.

Thrones- these Angels are so exalted and so illuminated by grace that the Lord dwells in them and through them manifests His justice.

Second, middle hierarchy consists of Angels named: Dominance, Strength and Authority . Angels Dominations teach people to dominate their will, to be above all temptation, and also command those evil spirits who swore to destroy man. Powers- Angels filled with Divine strength. These are the spirits through whom the Lord performs His miracles. They were given by God the ability to send down the grace of miracles to the saints of God, who work miracles during their lives on earth. Authorities- Angels who have the power to tame the power of demons and repel enemy temptations. In addition, they strengthen good ascetics in their spiritual and physical labors.

Third, lowest hierarchy also includes three ranks: Beginnings, Archangels And Angels . Beginnings- the rank of Angels, who are entrusted with governing the universe, protecting and governing individual countries and peoples. These are the Angels of the People. Their dignity is higher than the Guardian Angels of individual people. From the book of the prophet Daniel we learn that the care of the Jewish people was entrusted to the Archangel Michael (see: Dan. 10, 21). Archangels- great evangelists of the Mysteries of God, of all that is great and glorious. They strengthen the holy faith in people, enlightening their minds to the knowledge and understanding of the will of God.

(last, ninth rank of hierarchy) - bright spiritual beings who stand closest to us and have special care for us.

We know from the Holy Scriptures that there are seven Archangels, that is, the senior Angels who rule over everyone else. In the book of Tobit we read that the Angel who talked with him said: “I am Raphael, one of the seven holy Angels” (Tob. 12, 15). And the Revelation of John the Theologian speaks of seven spirits who are before the throne of God (see: Rev. 1, 4). The Holy Church includes among them: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selafiel, Jehudiel and Barachiel. Tradition also includes Jeremiel among them.

1. archangel Michael- the first of the supreme Angels, the Champion of the glory of God. He is often depicted in military garb with other Angels faithful to God. Or he is depicted alone in the clothes of a warrior with a sword or spear in his hand, trampling underfoot a dragon or an ancient serpent - the devil. This is how he is depicted in memory of the fact that there was once a great war in heaven between the Angels - the servants of God and the evil spirits - the angels who fell away from God and became the servants of Satan. Sometimes he is depicted with a spear, the top of which is decorated with a white banner with a cross. This is a special distinction between Archangel Michael and his army, meaning moral purity and unshakable loyalty to the Heavenly King.

2. Archangel Gabriel- the herald of God's destinies and the servant of His omnipotence. Sometimes depicted with a branch of heaven in his hand. Or with a lantern with a candle burning inside in one hand and a mirror in the other. A candle closed in a lantern means that often the destinies of God are hidden until the time of their fulfillment, but even after their fulfillment they are comprehended only by those who carefully look into the mirror of their conscience and the words of God.

3. Archangel Raphael- depicted with an alabaster vessel filled with healing oil. The name Raphael means "mercy", "help to all those who suffer."

4. Archangel Uriel- Archangel of light and fire of God- depicted with a lightning bolt down. He is illuminated by the fire of fiery love, enlightens the minds of people with the revelation of useful truths. It can be said about him that he is a special patron of people who devote themselves to science.

5. Archangel Selaphiel- Archangel of prayer. He is depicted either with a rosary in his hands, or in a prayer pose with his hands placed in reverence on his chest.

Happy holiday, dear Archangel Michael and congratulations to all the ethereal Heavenly Powers! Glory to Thee St. Michael the Archangel with all the ethereal forces.

Archangel Michael (who is like God) is the leader of the heavenly army.

Archangel Michael is the first of the supreme Angels, the Champion of the glory of God. He is often depicted in military garb with other Angels faithful to God. Or he is depicted alone in the clothes of a warrior with a sword or spear in his hand, trampling underfoot a dragon or an ancient serpent-dialov. This is how he is depicted in memory of the fact that there was once a great war in heaven between spirits - angels who fell away from God and became servants of Satan. Sometimes he is depicted with a spear, the top of which is decorated with a white banner with a cross. This is a special difference between Archangel Michael and his army, meaning moral purity and unshakable loyalty to the Heavenly King.

Mentioned in canonical books:
Dan. 10, 13; 12, 1.
Jude. Art. 9.
Open 12, 7-8.

"Mikhail, one of the first princes, came to help me". (Dan. 10:13)

Oh, great Archangel of God, Archangel Michael, conqueror of demons! Defeat and crush all my enemies, visible and invisible, and pray to the Lord Almighty, may the Lord save and preserve me from all sorrows and from all illnesses, from mortal wounds and vain (sudden) death.

Holy Archangel of God Michael! Drive away from me with your lightning sword the evil, despondent spirit that tempts me, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

When Satan rebelled against God, saying, “I will exalt my throne above the stars of God... I will be like the Most High” (Isa. 14:13-14), then the Archangel of God Michael stood up to him, answering: "Who is like God? No one like God!" . And then the entire angelic world was divided.

“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought against them, but did not stand... And the great dragon was cast out, the ancient serpent, called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world, was cast out to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven: Now has come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ, because the slanderer is cast out.” (Apoc.12:7-10).

Since then, God blessed this zealous Archangel to participate in spiritual battles as the Archangel of the disembodied forces and named him Michael, which translated means - Who is like God. Who is equal to God.

The book “Guide to Painting Icons of Saints” says that Saint Archangel Michael “is depicted trampling (stomping on) Lucifer and, as a winner, holding a green date branch in his left hand on his chest, and in his right hand a spear, on top of which a white banner with a red cross to commemorate the victory of the Cross over the devil." (Academician V.D. Fartusov, Moscow, Synod. Type, 1910, p. 226).

Russian Chrysostom, Archbishop of Kherson Innocent wrote for edification: “He was the first to rebel against Lucifer (Satan), when he rebelled against the Almighty. It is known how this war ended - with the overthrow of the Lucifer (Satan) from heaven. Since then, Archangel Michael has not ceased to fight for the glory of the Creator and Lord of all, for the cause of salvation of the human race, for the Church and her children.

... Therefore, for those who are adorned with the name of the first of the Archangels, it is most fitting to be distinguished by zeal for the glory of God, loyalty to the King of Heaven and the kings of the earth, constant war against vice and wickedness, constant humility and self-sacrifice" (Seven Archangels of God, M., 1996, pp. .5-6).

Memory of Saint Archangel Michael church calendar takes place on November 8 (old style) and September 6 (old style).

Holy Archangel Michael, help me defeat enemies, visible and invisible, and adversaries fighting against my soul and body. And pray to God for me, a sinner. Amen.

archangel Michael - one of the highest angels, taking the closest part in the destinies of the Church. Holy Scripture teaches us that, in addition to the physical, there is a great spiritual world inhabited by intelligent, good creatures called angels. The word "angel" Greek means messenger. The Holy Scripture calls them this because God often communicates His will to people through them. What exactly is their life in the spiritual world that they inhabit, and what is their activity - we know almost nothing, and, in essence, we are not able to understand. They live in conditions completely different from our material ones: there time, space and all living conditions have a completely different content. The prefix “archi” to some angels indicates their more elevated service compared to other angels.

Name Michael- in Hebrew it means "Who is like God". The Holy Scripture, telling about the appearance of angels to various people, names only some of them by their own names - apparently those who carry a special mission in establishing the Kingdom of God on earth. Among them are the archangels Michael and Gabriel, mentioned in the canonical books of Scripture, as well as the archangels Raphael, Uriel, Salafiel, Jehudiel and Barachiel, mentioned in the non-canonical books of Scripture. Archangel Gabriel usually appeared to some righteous people as a messenger of great and joyful events concerning the people of God (Dan. 8, 16, 9, 21; Luke 1, 19-26). In the book of Tobit, the archangel Raphael says about himself: “I am Raphael, one of the seven holy Angels who offer the prayers of the saints and ascend before the glory of the Holy One” (Tob. 12:15). From here arose the belief that there are seven archangels in Heaven, one of which is the Archangel Michael.

Archangel Michael in Scripture is called “prince”, “leader of the army of the Lord” and is depicted as the main fighter against the devil and all lawlessness among people. Hence his church name “archistratig”, i.e. senior warrior, leader. Thus, the Archangel Michael appeared to Joshua as an assistant during the Israeli conquest of the Promised Land. He appeared to the prophet Daniel during the days of the fall of the Babylonian kingdom and the beginning of the creation of the Messianic kingdom. Daniel was predicted to receive help from the Archangel Michael to the people of God during the period of upcoming persecution under the Antichrist. In the Book of Revelation, Archangel Michael appears as the main leader in the war against the dragon-devil and other rebellious angels. “And there was war in Heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought against them, but they did not stand, and no place was found for them in Heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, the ancient serpent, called the devil and Satan.” The Apostle Jude briefly mentions the Archangel Michael as an adversary of the devil. (Josh. 5, 13; Dan. 10; 12, 1; Jude 9; Rev. 12, 7-9; Luke 10, 18).

In the spirit of Holy Scripture, some Church Fathers see Archangel Michael as a participant in other important events in the life of the people of God, where, however, he is not called by name. For example, he is identified with the mysterious pillar of fire that walked before the Israelites during their flight from Egypt and destroyed the hordes of Pharaoh at sea. He is also credited with the defeat of the huge Assyrian army that besieged Jerusalem under the prophet Isaiah. (Ex. 33, 9, 14, 26-28; 2 Kings 19, 35).

The Church reveres Archangel Michael as a defender of the faith and a fighter against heresies and all evil. On icons he is depicted with a fiery sword in his hand, or with a spear casting down the devil. At the beginning of the 4th century, the Church established the feast of the “Council” (i.e., the assembly) of the holy angels, led by the Archangel Michael, on November 8th.

archangel Michael

Mentions and appearances

Old Testament

As a rule, the names of angels do not appear in the Old Testament, but the name of the angel Michael is mentioned several times at the end of the Book of Daniel:
“But the prince of the kingdom of Persia stood against me twenty-one days; but behold, Michael, one of the first princes, came to help me, and I remained there with the kings of Persia” (Dan. 10:13).

“Nevertheless, I will tell you what is written in the true Scripture; and there is no one who will support me in this except Michael your prince” (Dan. 10:21).

And also in the prophecy about the Last Judgment and the role of the Archangel Michael in it:
“And at that time Michael will arise, the great prince who stands for the children of your people; and a time of trouble will come, such as has not happened since people existed until now; But at that time all of your people who are found written in the book will be saved.” (Dan.12:1)

Christian tradition also identifies the following references to angels, not named, with the actions of the Archangel Michael:
- appearance to Balaam: “and the Angel of the Lord stood on the road to hinder him” (Num. 22:22);

Appearance to Joshua: “and behold a man stood before him, and in his hand was a naked sword” and further he is called the Leader of the Lord’s army (Joshua 5:13-15);

Destruction of 185 thousand soldiers of the Assyrian king Sennacherib (Kings. 19:35);

2nd Book of Kings, chapter 19, verses 32-35

“Therefore, this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria: “He will not enter this city, nor throw an arrow there, nor approach it with a shield, nor build a rampart against it.
He will return by the same road by which he came, and will not enter this city, says the Lord.
I will guard this city to save it for My own sake and for the sake of David My servant."
And it happened that night: the angel of the Lord went and smote one hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of Assyria. And they got up in the morning, and behold, all the bodies were dead."

-salvation of the three youths in the fiery furnace:“Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who sent His angel and delivered His servants” (Dan. 3:95).

In the Old Testament apocrypha, the Book of Enoch, Enoch, the son of Jared, was exalted to the throne of God:
...the Lord said to His servants, looking at them: “Let Enoch draw near to stand before My face forever.” And the angels of the Lord bowed down and said: “Let him draw near according to Your word.” And the Lord said to Michael: “Come and take off Enoch’s earthly garments, and anoint him with My good myrrh, and clothe him in the garments of My glory.” And Michael did as the Lord commanded him: he anointed me and clothed me.
In one of the Qumran scrolls, “The War of the Sons of Light against the Sons of Darkness,” Michael is described as the leader of light, leading the forces of God against the darkness of evil, led by Belial.

New Testament

The Council Epistle of Jude tells: “Michael the Archangel, when he spoke with the devil, arguing about the body of Moses, did not dare to pronounce a reproachful judgment, but said: “The Lord rebuke you”” (Jude 1:9). The apostle borrows his story from “The Tale of the Archange Michael’s Dispute with the Devil about the Body of Moses,” which reports that the devil tried to prove his power over the body of Moses for his murder of the Egyptian. According to the testimony of Clement of Alexandria, Origen and Athanasius the Great, this legend was contained in the Christian apocrypha “The Ascension or Ascension of Moses.” However, this story also known from the Jewish apocrypha “The Dormition of Moses.”

The Revelation of John the Theologian tells of the heavenly battle of the Archangel Michael and his angels with a seven-headed and ten-horned dragon, pursuing a Woman clothed with the sun and her baby:
“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought (against them), but they did not stand, and there was no longer a place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that ancient serpent, called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world, he was cast out to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him” (Rev. 12:7-9)
This reference to Michael's role in the battle of good and evil influenced many eschatological Christian works. Religious tradition began to attribute to Michael not only the victory over Satan, but also the role of judge at the Last Judgment, to which he would call souls with trumpets.
The theme of the Archangel Michael weighing the souls of sinners at the Last Judgment became a traditional motif in the iconography of the Last Judgment, and Michael himself acquired the role of patron of the dead. This idea of Michael was reflected in his hymnography: “Holy Archangel Michael, protect us in the struggle, do not let us perish at the Last Judgment.”

The Coptic homily about the Archangel Michael (10th century) provides a detailed account of how Michael will take part in the Last Judgment: he will call the dead from their graves with a trumpet voice, will cry over the fate of sinners, and Jesus Christ, through his prayers, will forgive them.
The image of the Archangel Michael is present in many Christian apocrypha:

The “Gospel of Nicodemus” (IV century) reports that Jesus Christ, after descending into hell, entrusted the souls of the righteous languishing in it to Michael in order to take them to heaven.

The Revelation of Paul (late 4th century) credits Michael with performing the ritual washing of the souls of the repentant dead before they entered Heavenly Jerusalem:
And I said to the archangel: “What is this, my lord?” And he says to me: “This is Lake Acheron, and inside it is the city of God. Not everyone is allowed to enter this city, unless they repent of their sins. When a person has repented and departed from life, he surrenders to Michael, and they throw him into Lake Acheron, and only then does he bring him to the city of God in the neighborhood of the righteous.”

“The Virgin’s Walk through Torment” (10th century) presents Michael as the Virgin Mary’s guide through hell, who shows and explains to her the reasons for the torment of sinners. At the beginning of the apocrypha, Hayretisms are given in the likeness of the akathist in which the Mother of God addresses Michael like this:
Rejoice, Archangel Michael, servant of the invisible Father, Rejoice, Archangel Michael, interlocutor of My Son, Rejoice, Archangel Michael, glory of the six-winged, Rejoice, Archangel Michael, ruling over all and standing at the throne of the Lord in dignity, Rejoice, Archangel Michael, having to sound the trumpet and awaken those who have rested from time immemorial, rejoice, Archangel Michael, first of all up to the throne of God.

“The Apocryphal Revelation of John the Theologian” tells that the archangels Michael and Gabriel, at the direction of God, will blow the ram’s horns and “from the voice of that trumpet the whole earth will shake, as the prophet predicted: And from the voice of the sparrow every grass will rise, - that is, from the voice of the archangel everything will rise human nature." Thus, the archangels will call people to the Last Judgment.

In Christianity

In Orthodoxy, the Archangel Michael is called the Archangel and acts as the head of the holy army of angels guarding God’s law; this image has been present since apostolic times (see the mention of Michael’s dispute about the body of Moses - Jude 1:9). Following this tradition, in the Great Menaions, Metropolitan Macarius writes: “God set up the preservation of Michael the Archangel as a kind of all-powerful weapon against the power of the devil.” In this image, Michael is revered as the patron and comrade-in-arms of the “militant Church,” that is, all those faithful to God who oppose the forces of evil.
Michael, based on the role attributed to him at the Last Judgment, began to be revered as the protector of the souls of the dead. The souls of Abraham and the Mother of God were entrusted to him by God when they were transferred to heaven.

Archangel Michael is also approached with prayers for healing. This is due to the above-mentioned veneration of Michael the Archangel as the conqueror of evil spirits, which in Christianity were considered the source of disease. In many places in Asia Minor there are healing springs dedicated to St. Michael. In Constantinople, Saint Michael was also revered as the great heavenly healer and his main shrine, Michaelion, was located about 80 km away. from the capital of the Byzantine Empire (in this place, according to legend, he appeared to Emperor Constantine).

Coptic Christians dedicated the main river of Egypt, the Nile, to Saint Michael. The Copts adopted the Byzantine tradition of celebrating the Archangel Michael, but moved its date to November 12. Also, on the 12th of every month, a special service is held in the Coptic Church in memory of St. Michael, and on June 12, when the Nile overflows its banks, a holiday was established in honor of St. Michael and in gratitude for the flood of the river.

In Christianity, it is generally accepted that the cherub armed with a sword at the gates of heaven was the Archangel Michael. In particular, this plot is included in his hagiographic stamps in Orthodox icons. On a number of icons, the halo of the Archangel Michael consists of a floral ornament, which symbolically indicates that he is a heavenly guardian standing at the gates of heaven. This is evidenced by the medieval collection of miracles of the Archangel Michael, “Pandoleon the Deacon and Chartophylak to the Great Church, the Legend of the Miracles of the Great and Glorious Michael, the Archangel”:
“And such and the divine Archangel Michael... give us here, chosen Christians, a great representative and Savior.”

Memories of the miracle of Archangel Michael

archangel Michael- one of the highest angels, taking the closest part in the destinies of the Church. Archangel Michael in Scripture is called “prince”, “leader of the army of the Lord” and is depicted as the main fighter against the devil and all lawlessness among people. Therefore, in church terms he is called “archistratig”, that is, senior warrior, leader. The Church reveres Archangel Michael as a defender of the faith and a fighter against heresies and all evil. On the icons, Michael is depicted with a fiery sword in his hand or a spear, overthrowing the devil. The miracle of Archangel Michael occurred in the 4th century. Not far from the city of Hierapolis there is an area called Herotopa, and in this area there was a temple built in the name of the Archangel Michael. And near that temple there flowed a healing spring. The temple was built by one of the city residents in gratitude to St. Archangel Michael for healing his dumb daughter with the water of the spring. Archangel Michael, appearing in a dream vision to the father of a mute girl, who had not yet been enlightened by holy Baptism, revealed to him that his daughter would receive the gift of speech by drinking water from the spring.

The girl actually received healing at the source and began to speak. After this miracle, the father and daughter and his entire family were baptized, and through the zeal of the grateful father, a temple was erected in honor of the Holy Archangel Michael. Not only Christians, but also pagans began to come to the source for healing, many of whom renounced idols and turned to the faith of Christ. In the Church of St. Archangel Michael, a pious man named Archippus served as sexton for more than 60 years. By preaching about Christ and the example of his godly life, he led many pagans to faith in Christ. In their anger at Christians in general, and primarily at Archippus, who never left the temple and was an exemplary servant of Christ, the pagans decided to destroy the temple and at the same time destroy Archippus. The pagans connected two mountain rivers into one channel and directed their flow towards the temple. Saint Archippus fervently prayed to Archangel Michael to prevent disaster. His prayer was heard, and Archangel Michael appeared at the temple, who, with a blow of his staff, opened a wide cleft in the mountain and commanded the waters of the seething stream to rush into it. The temple remained undamaged, but the pagans fled from the temple in fear and horror. Saint Archippus and the Christians gathered near the temple glorified God and thanked Saint Michael the Archangel for his help. The place where the miracle took place was called Khona, which means “hole”, “cleft”. This holiday is popularly called Michaelmas Day or Michaelmas miracle.

Archangel Michael - sermon

(Bishop Vasily (Rodzianko)

Akathist to Saint Archangel Michael

Kontakion 1

Chosen commander of the Heavenly powers and intercessor of the human race, we offer this song of thanksgiving to you, who are delivered from the sorrowful: you, as you stand before the Throne of the King of Glory, free us from all troubles, and with faith and love we call you in praise: Rejoice, Michael , the great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Ikos 1

Like the fiery angelic faces of the primate, it is fitting that angelic bodies and tongues praise you, Michael; but until you admonish the disembodied with the verb, hear, even from human, especially grateful lips, the gray face: Rejoice, original star of the world; Rejoice, brighter light of truth and golden righteousness. Rejoice, first receiver of the rays of uncreated light in angelic celestials; Rejoice, chief of the angels. Rejoice, in him the glory of the Creative Hand shines most brightly; Rejoice, for in it are the cathedrals of all incorporeal beings. Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 2

Seer of faith, the greatness of spiritual beauty and the power of your lightning right hand, Archangel of God, we, as earthly and flesh-bound, are filled with surprise, joy and gratitude to the Creator of all, calling with all the Heavenly powers: Alleluia.

Ikos 2

The mind is pure and free from passions, ask us, wonderful Michael, the ruler of the heavenly ranks, and, having ascended in thought from the earthly to the heavenly, we will sing a song of praise to you: Rejoice, God's indescribable beauty and kindness closest to the viewer: Rejoice, all-good advice of the Most Holy Trinity in the sincere mystery. Rejoice, faithful executor of the eternal destinies of the Trinity; Rejoice, for the hosts of Heaven marvel at him with love. Rejoice, who are glorified with faith by those born on earth; Rejoice, for whom the forces of hell tremble. Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 3

Revealing the power of irresistible zeal for the glory of God in yourself, you became at the head of the angelic faces, Michael, against the proud Dannitsa, who breathes malice, and to him with his dark minions from the heights of heaven into the underworld, the being cast down, the host of Heaven, most gloriously led by you, with joy, as with one mouth, before the Throne of God, shouting: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

To have you, Archangel Michael, the entire Christian race, a great intercessor and a wondrous helper in battles with the enemy; Therefore, for the sake of your wonderful protection, if we wish to be honored, on the day of your triumph we cry to you: Rejoice, for whom Satan, like lightning, fell from heaven; Rejoice, through whom the preserved human race ascends to heaven. Rejoice, wonderful adornment of the all-bright world of the Mountain; Rejoice, glorious intercession of the fallen world. Rejoice, no longer defeated by the forces of evil; Rejoice, established with all the Angels of God in truth and righteousness forever by the grace of God. Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all your Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 4

Deliver us, the First Throne Angels, from the storms of temptations and troubles, who celebrate your most radiant triumph with love and joy; For you are a great helper in troubles and in the hour of death from evil spirits the guardian and intercessor of all who cry to your and our Master and God: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

Seeing your boldness against the hordes of Satan, all the ranks of angels joyfully moved after you to fight for the Name and glory of their Master, crying out: who is God? We, who have brought Satan down under your feet, call to you, as a conqueror: Rejoice, to whom peace and silence have established themselves in heaven; Rejoice, for the worthless spirit of malice has descended even to hell. Rejoice, direct the angelic armies and the forces of the invisible world to destroy evil; Rejoice, you have invisibly tamed the disturbance of the elements of the visible world. Rejoice, wondrous champions of the spirits of wickedness in heaven; Rejoice, you are strong and helpful to those who are weak in the temptations and misfortunes of this age. Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 5

A rich source of great miracles appeared in your temple in Khoneh; Not just because the great and terrible serpent, who abided in that place, consumed your power, but also the streams of water, healing every bodily ailment, opened up, and all of them called to the Lord of the Angels, who glorify you, with faith: Alleluia.

Ikos 5

Hearing and leading you like a great light, shining in the midst of the faces of angels, wonderful Michael, we resort to you, according to God and the Most Holy Mother of God: illuminate with the rays of your light all of us, crying out to you: Rejoice, leader and guardian in the desert of God’s chosen people; Rejoice, high mediator of the law, given by the hand of Moses at Sinai. Rejoice, from the wicked judges and leaders of Israel you have found strength and protection; Rejoice, through the prophets and high priestess of Judaism the gift of knowledge from the Omniscient God was received. Rejoice, God-fearing lawgivers who provide secret wisdom; Rejoice, you place judgment and truth in the hearts of those who do good. Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 6

When I once saw Manoah, the herald of God's destinies, I was filled with bewilderment and fear, and thought that no one should live on earth; Taught from his wife about the goodness of the appearance and the meekness of your words, in joy about the one who was born, according to your words, your son Sampson, cry out to God with gratitude: Alleluia.

Ikos 6

You shone with wonderful glory, Michael, when you stood in the form of humanity before Joshua, saying, “Take the boot off your foot, for I am the Archangel of the power of the Lord.” Wondering at your appearance, we cry out to you with love: Rejoice, vigilant guardian of the divinely crowned heads; Rejoice, you who resist the authorities, as those who resist God’s command are quick to destroy them. Rejoice, pacifier of popular unrest; Rejoice, invisible abolitionist of evil customs. Rejoice, for you enlighten those who doubt in the hour of fierce perplexity; Rejoice, for you snatch away those tempted from destructive obsessions. Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 7

Although the Lord of all things shows that the lot of the sons of men is not a matter of chance, but is contained in His Right Hand, having given you an intercessor and guardian for the kingdoms of the earth, and preparing tribes and peoples for the eternal Kingdom of God; For this reason, everyone who knows about your great service for human salvation calls out to God with gratitude: Alleluia.

Ikos 7

New miracles have been shown to us, Archangel, by you on earth, the Creator and Lord of all miracles, when the temple, created in your name, was wondrously saved from being drowned by river waters; Seeing blessed Archippus with his spiritual children, he cried out to you in gratitude: Rejoice, indestructible fence of the holy temples of God; Rejoice, the enemy of the faith of Christ is an insurmountable barrier. Rejoice, for the elements obey His command; Rejoice, for through him all evil plans are crushed. Rejoice, you who bring joy from the Throne of the Almighty to the faithful; Rejoice, you who lead the unfaithful onto the path of righteousness and truth. Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 8

A strange miracle of your power, Archangel of God, was carried away by Habakkuk, who, by the mania of God, took him away and brought him quickly from Judea to Babylon, to give food to Daniel, imprisoned in a den of lions; Moreover, being amazed at the great effect of your power, cry out with faith: Alleluia.

Ikos 8

You are all in the highest, Michael, standing before the Throne of the King of Glory, and you are not far from the lower ones, fighting with the enemies of human salvation; the same with all the coveted Fatherland. Those who want to achieve heaven, according to you, call: Rejoice, director of the thrice-holy angelic singing; Rejoice, ever-ready representative and guardian of the earth-born. Rejoice, proud Pharaoh and the infidel Egyptians, striking strangely; Rejoice, faithful Jews, glorious guide in the desert. Rejoice, by whom the flame of the furnace of Babylon was extinguished; Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 9

All the monks of the Holy Mount Athos came into joyful trepidation, seeing how God-fearing the youth was, furiously thrown into the depths of the sea with a stone from the wicked gold-lovers, you saved; Moreover, the monastery that has received him, admiring your name, gratefully calls out to the Lord: Alleluia.

Ikos 9

The ornate verbs and wise meanings do not suffice to express your power, Michael, how in one night you smote a hundred and seventy and five thousand from the armies of the Assyrian king Sennacherib, so that others may be punished, do not blaspheme the Name of the Lord; We, honoring your holy zeal for the glory of the True God, joyfully call to you: Rejoice, invincible commander of the Orthodox armies; Rejoice, fear and overthrow of evil armies. Rejoice, planter of the right faith and worship of God; Rejoice, destroyer of soul-harming heresies and schisms. Rejoice, you who have strengthened the pious Maccabees many times on the battlefield; Rejoice, you who defeated the wicked leader of Antiochus Iliodor in the temple itself. Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 10

Be a strong helper to those who want to be saved, Archangel of God, deliver us and protect us from troubles and misfortunes, especially from our evil habits and sins, yes, thriving in faith, hope and love of Christ, with joy about your previous intercession to the Lord of Angels and men, grateful we call: Alleluia.

Ikos 10

You are a wall to a believer, Archangel of God, and a strong pillar in battle with enemies visible and invisible; For this reason, we are delivered by you from the snares of demons, with a grateful heart and mouth we call Sitsa: Rejoice, invincible opponent of the enemy of faith and the opponent of the Holy Church; Rejoice, tireless hastener of the humble proclaimer of the Gospel. Rejoice, enlighten those who sit in the darkness of evil with the light of the faith of Christ; Rejoice, instructing those fooled by false wisdom onto the path of truth and repentance. Rejoice, terrible avenger who swears the Name of God in vain; Rejoice, lightning-fast punisher of those who mock madness about the sacraments of the holy faith. Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 11

All singing of praise is overcome by the multitude of your miracles, Archangel of God, as you have accomplished the essence not only in heaven and on earth, but also in the dark halls of the underworld, where you bound the deep serpent with the bonds of the power of the Lord, so that those who are delivered from his malice will bless the Lord of heaven and earth, calling: Alleluia.

Ikos 11

The luminous servant of truth and purity of God-worship appeared, O Archangel, when, foreseeing the machinations of the spirit of darkness, you forbade him in the Name of God, so that the hidden body of the deceased leader of Israel, Moses, would not dare to appear for deification as the sensual son of Israel; For this reason, now honoring your blessed council, we cry out to you with gratitude: Rejoice, you who preserved the purity of knowledge of God among the Jews in the days of the Old Testament; Rejoice, you who have many times eradicated the tares of error in the days of New Grace. Rejoice, destroyer of pagan soothsayers and idols; Rejoice, strengthener of Christian ascetics and passion-bearers. Rejoice, filling those who are weak in spirit with the power of God’s grace; Rejoice, thou who clothe those who are weak in the flesh with the whole armor of faith. Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 12

Ask for grace from God from Heaven for us, who sing in the glory of your all-honorable name, Michael, so that, overshadowed by your intercession, we will live in all piety and purity, until, having been separated by death from the bonds of the flesh, we will be worthy to appear before the fiery Throne of the King of Glory and cry out from the faces of the angels: Alleluia.

Ikos 12

Singing your manifold miracles, Michael, performed for our salvation, we pray to the Lord and Master of all, that the spirit of zeal for the glory of God, which is in you, will become scarce in us, who call you: Rejoice, faithful servants of God at the right time to the height of power supply beforehand; Rejoice, thou who invisibly cast down the impudent and unworthy from the heights of power and glory. Rejoice, on the last day you have brethren chosen from the four corners of the earth; Rejoice, even though sinners, like tares, will be given over to eternal fire by the voice of God. Rejoice, for Satan and his angels will be cast into the lake of fire forever; Rejoice, for the righteous will be more gloriously established in the abodes of the Heavenly Father. Rejoice, Michael, great Archangel, with all the Heavenly powers.

Kontakion 13

O wonderful chief of the Archangels and Angels, for your wonderful service to the salvation of the human race, accept from us the voice of praise and thanksgiving that is now raised to you and, as if filled with the power of God, cover us with your immaterial wing from all enemies, visible and invisible, so that the one glorified by you and glorified you Let us call to the Lord: Alleluia.

Akathist to the Archangel Michael

Prayers to Saint Archangel Michael

First prayer to Archangel Michael

Holy and great Archangel of God Michael, the inscrutable and all-essential Trinity, the first primate of the Angels, the guardian and guardian of the human race, crushing with his army the head of the proud Denis in heaven and putting to shame his malice and deceit on earth! We resort to you with faith and we pray to you with love: be an indestructible shield and a strong shield for the Holy Church and our Orthodox Fatherland, protecting them with your lightning sword from all enemies, visible and invisible. Do not, O Archangel of God, forsake us through your help and intercession, who today glorify your holy name: behold, even though we are many sinners, we do not want to perish in our iniquities, but to turn to the Lord and be quickened by Him to do good deeds . Illuminate our minds with the light of God’s face, which shines on your lightning-like brow, so that we may understand that God’s will for us is good and perfect, and that we know all that it is fitting for us to do and that which we should despise and abandon. Strengthen our weak will and weak will with the grace of the Lord, so that, having established ourselves in the law of the Lord, we will cease to be dominated by earthly thoughts and the lusts of the flesh, carried away in the likeness of senseless children by the soon-to-perish beauties of this world, as if for the sake of the corruptible and earthly it is foolish to forget the eternal and heavenly. Over all of these, ask us from above for the spirit of true repentance, unfeigned sadness for God and contrition for our sins, so that we may spend the remaining number of days of our temporary life not in pleasing our feelings and working with our passions, but in erasing the evils we have committed with tears of faith and contrition of heart, deeds of purity and holy deeds of mercy. When the hour of our end approaches, liberation from the bonds of this mortal body, do not leave us. Archangel of God, defenseless against the spirits of wickedness in heaven, accustomed to block the souls of mankind from rising to heaven, yes, protected by you, we will reach those glorious villages of paradise without stumbling, where there is no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life, and, being honored to see the bright face of the All-Blessed Lord and Master of ours, falling with tears at His feet, let us exclaim in joy and tenderness: glory to Thee, our dearest Redeemer, Who for Thy great love for us, unworthy, was pleased to send Thy angels to serve our salvation! Amen.

Second prayer to Archangel Michael

O Saint Michael the Archangel, have mercy on us sinners who require your intercession, save us, servant of God (names), from all visible and invisible enemies, moreover, strengthen us from the horror of death and from the embarrassment of the devil and vouchsafe us to shamelessly present ourselves to our Creator at the hour of His terrible and righteous Judgment. O all-holy, great Michael the Archangel! Do not despise us sinners who pray to you for help and your intercession in this world and in the future, but grant us there together with you to glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.

Prayer three to Archangel Michael

Lord, Great God, King without beginning, send Your Archangel Michael to help Your servants (name). Protect us, Archangel, from all enemies, visible and invisible. Oh, Lord the Great Archangel Michael! Destroyer of demons, rebuke all enemies fighting me, and make them like demons, and humble their evil hearts, and crush them like dust in the face of the wind. Oh, Lord the Great Archangel Michael! Six-winged first Prince and Governor of the Heavenly Forces - Cherubim and Seraphim, be our helper in all troubles, sorrows, sorrows, a quiet refuge in the desert and on the seas. Oh, Lord the Great Archangel Michael! Deliver us from all the charms of the devil, when You hear us, sinners, praying to You and calling on Your Holy name. Hasten to our aid and overcome all who oppose us, by the power of the Honest and Life-giving Cross of the Lord, by the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos, by the prayers of the Holy Apostles, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Andrew, for Christ's sake, the Fool for the Fool, St. the prophet Elijah and all the holy great martyrs: St. martyrs Nikita and Eustathius, and all our reverend fathers, who have pleased God from the ages, and all the holy Heavenly Powers. Oh, Lord the Great Archangel Michael! Help us sinners (name) and deliver us from cowardice, flood, fire, sword and vain death, from great evil, from the flattering enemy, from the reviled storm, from the evil one always, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen. Holy Archangel of God Michael, with Your lightning sword, drive away from me the evil spirit that tempts and torments me. Amen.

Temple of the Archangel Michael in the village. Arkhangelskoye celebrated its patronal feast day

On November 21, the Holy Church celebrates a great holiday - the Council of the Archangel Michael and other ethereal Heavenly Powers. This holiday is the main one in honor of the holy angels, created by God before man and called upon to glorify the Holy Trinity, communicate God's will to people and be God's helpers. The holiday is popularly called Michaelmas Day and is highly revered by believers.

The Arkhangelsk land received numerous guests on this day - believers from Kudymkar, Obvinsk, Yusva, Doeg, Kalinino and other settlements came to the patronal feast of the Archangel Michael Church and the spiritual festival “We sing glory to Michael the Archangel” dedicated to it.

The holiday began with the Divine Liturgy, which was performed in the birthday church by its new rector, priest Alexander Tomilin. For the patronal feast, the church was decorated with fresh flowers, the bright light from many candles created a solemn atmosphere. The temple could barely accommodate everyone who wanted to take part in the cathedral prayer: more than half of the parishioners began the sacraments of repentance and Holy Communion.

At the end of the liturgy, a religious procession was held with prayer singing around the temple, and many years of service to the hierarchy were sung. Congratulating the parishioners and guests of the church on the holiday of the Cathedral of the Archangel Michael, Father Alexander thanked everyone for participating in the joint prayer, congratulated everyone on Angel’s Day and told the story of the origin of the holiday. He noted that each of us has the opportunity to call upon the Angelic forces in our prayers, who are closest to God and are His faithful helpers and servants.

The celebration did not end there. After a small meal, a festival took place in the Arkhangelsk House of Culture, in which not only local creative groups took part, but also guests from Obvinsk, Yusva, and Doeg. The festival opened with the prayer “To the Heavenly King” and ended with the singing “It is Worthy to Eat.” Both spiritual chants and patriotic songs about Russia, about love for mother, for Russian nature, about the Great Patriotic War.
