Task 4 speaking English exam cliche. Ege in English speaking speech clichés

Task 3. Imagine that while traveling during your holidays you took some photos. Choose one photo to present to your friend.

  • when
  • what/who
  • what
  • why

I"ve chosen photo number...

Sample answer (photo #1):

I"ve chosen photo number 1.

  • I took this photo last summer when I went to London during my holidays.
  • In the foreground of this photo you can see the London Eye which is the largest observation wheel in Europe. It is located on the south bank of the river Thames. There are two motor boats on the river. in the background you can see some modern buildings.
  • As you can see the day is dull and gloomy and the sky is gray with clouds. It looks like it "s going to rain what is very typical for London. But there are always a lot of people waiting for a ride on this popular attraction. There are 32 (thirty-two) capsules on the wheel which are rotating very slowly. Ech capsule contains 25 (twenty-five) people.
  • I took this photo because it is a well-known landmark of London. From the very top of the London Eye we had a stunning view of this magnificent city. We saw the river Thames, the Houses of Parliament with its famous Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and other sites.
  • As my friend has never been to London, I decided to show him this picture and to share all my impressions of this terrific flight with him.

That's all I wanted to say.

Sample answer (photo number 3):

I"ve chosen photo number 3. (Be sure to start your answer with this phrase, after selecting the photo number.)

  • It is very lovely, isn't it? I took this photolast summer when I went to Moscow to visit my relatives. It was my first trip to the capital of our country and I wanted to see as many historical places as possible.
  • in the background of this picture you can see the Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed. Its tremendous domes struck my imagination. It "s unbelievable but none of them is like the others. Each dome has its own shape and color. Once I have read a legend that Ivan the Terrible blinded the architects Barma and Postnik because he didn't want them to create another masterpiece. There is a lot of greenery in the courtyard of the Cathedral. In front of the Cathedral there is a monument to Minin and Pozharsky.
  • The Cathedral and the monument are situated in Red Square. There are always a lot of tourists from different countries who want to visit these places. But now you cannot see any visitors because it was early morning.
  • I took this photo because these sights are famous landmarks of Moscow.
  • As my friend is fond of history and often makes reports for history classes, I think he can use this picture for his school project.

That's all I wanted to say. (End your answer with this phrase, which will signal the end of the communication.)

Sample answer (photo number 2):

I"ve chosen photo number 2. ( Be sure to start your answer with this phrase, after selecting the photo number).

After studying the sample answers, describe photo number 2 on your own.

As you can see from the above answers, you will need not only knowledge of the language, but, possibly, life experience. In the event that this does not turn out to be, which is unlikely, use your knowledge from other subjects, for example, history, geography, literature or art.

So let's sum it up:

1) The time to complete this task is very limited -1.5 minutes to prepare and 2 minutes to answer.During your preparation Will not the ability to make any notes and notes. Hence the conclusion - it is extremely useful to memorize the necessary clichés for fluency:

  • In the picture you can see…
  • On the left / on the right of the picture…
  • In the foreground of the picture… (in the foreground)
  • In the background of the picture… (in the background)
  • In the middle of the picture… (in the middle)
  • At the top of the picture… (above)
  • At the bottom of the picture… (below)
  • Next to
  • Behind (behind)
  • Near (about)
  • Under (under)
  • In front of (before)

Turnovers will be appropriate There is.../There are… I would like to draw your attention to the fact that after the turnover in units. number, use the indefinite article"a" before countable nouns.

e. g. There is a ticket office near the Eiffel Tower.

2) Answering the plan’s question “when you took the photo”, use Past Simple Tense (simple past tense). remember, thatyou were a photographer, and therefore (well, of course, if it's not a selfie) you need to describe the people in your photo (relatives, friends, people you know or don't know), and not yourself.

e. g. I took this photo two months agowhen I went to Paris to study French.

3) Stick to the given topic of the speech. To do this, carefully read the task. For example: Imagine that you arepreparing a presentation about London(Russia) or Imagine that you arepreparing a school newspaper about Art.

4) Answering the question of the plan“what/who is in the photo”,try to describe not only the appearance of the person, but also, presumably, his mood (sad - sad, happy - happy, serious - serious, angry - angry). Pay attention to the weather conditions in the photo (sunny - sunny, hot - hot, warm - warm, overcast - gloomy, rainy - rainy, cold - cold, frosty - frosty day). Name the time of year (month) when you took the picture.

5) As you can see the questionWhat is happening in the picture? stands in Present Progressive Tense, therefore, when describing the events taking place in the photograph, also use verbs in the form of the present long tense, supporting your answer with the phrase At this particular moment… (just at this moment...). You can also continue your story in Past Simple Tense.

6) Consider multiple answers to a questionWhy did you take this photo?I took this photo to remember the best moments and places of my journey. / I think this picture will remind me about my new foreign friends I met during my visit to Scotland (Italy, Egypt etc) and wonderful days we spent together.

7) Remember, your description should not be too detailed, because you may not meet the time allotted for a response. As you prepare, write down your answers and then speak them out using the timer. Thus, you will form a sense of time that you need to answer task 3 of the oral part of the exam in English.

You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak not more than 2 minutes.

In your talk remember to speak about:

  • when you took the photo (when you took the photo)
  • what/who is in the photo (who/what is in the photo)
  • what is happening (what is happening in the photo)
  • why you took a photo (why did you take this photo)
  • why did you decide to show the pictureto your friend (why did you decide to show this photo to your friend)

You have to talk continuously, starting with:

I"ve chosen photo number...

Sample answer (photo #1)

I"ve chosen photo number 1.

(Be sure to start your answer with this phrase, after selecting the photo number).

  • I took this photo in one of the beautiful parks in Edinburgh when I was on my trip to Scotland two years ago. It is quite amazing, isn't it?
  • In the foreground of the photo you can see two girlfriends spending their free time hanging around. They might study or work together. They seem to be in a good mood. They both are wearing all Scottish style suits, but the girl on the right who's got blond hair is wearing a yellow tartan, while the girl on the left has got a black-and-white pattern. moreover, she "s got an incredible hat which perfectly matches the rest of her clothing. The most stunning thing that caught my eye was her hair done in dreadlocks. In her right hand she is holding a black handbag made of leather.
  • in the background of the picture there are a lot of green trees with bushy (thick) crown. It was early September and it happened to be a very warm and sunny day. But still some people put on their jackets because the weather is very changeable and unpredictable on the British Isles. The man on the right who is wearing a checked shirt might be a tourist because he has got a blue backpack. As you can see at this particular moment the place is not overcrowded, so I think , it is great to enjoy your leisure time with your nearest and dearest in such a place.
  • I asked the girls to take their picture because I liked the style they were dressed up and I decided to show it to you because you are also keen on wearing unusual and freakish hats and maybe, the picture will give you some new ideas.
  • That is all I wanted to say

Sample answer (photo #2):

I"ve chosen photo number 2.

(Be sure to start your answer with this phrase, after selecting the photo number).

  • I took this photo during my winter holidays when we went to the ski resort in the Caucasus. After the Winter Olympic Games 2014, Sochi attracts lots of tourists both from Russia and from around the world.
  • you can see two children: a boy and a girl. They came here from Novosibirsk. They told me that they had started to ski when they were only three years old, that's why they look very confident on the snowy mountain slopes. The children are wearing bright ski suits made of special fabrics that protect them from cold and at the they also have all the necessary skiing equipment for this kind of sport such as alpine skis, plastic boots with special bindings, helmets, ski poles and goggle mounts.
  • you can see mountain peaks covered with snow and some kind of pines. You can "t see the mountains quite well from behind the clouds but it is a common phenomenon in this area.
  • At the very particular moment the children are learning a new downhill technique. And now they stopped for a while to take a breath. Sometimes I saw them landing in a fall but they went to square one again and again. They didn't give up, so I should admit that they have got strong willpower. As you can see they look very healthy and happy. I believe that it's very useful to take up to sport from childhood. This will teach you to overcome difficulties in life, will teach you to win or to lose.
  • I took this photo because we made friends with the family from Novosibirsk and their cute kids and I want to remember the beautiful moments of my vacation.
  • I decided to show you this photo becauseI want you to appreciate these two young sportsmen and the beauty of the Caucasus Mountains.
  • That is all I wanted to say . (mandatory phrase for the examiner, indicating the completion of communication)

Sample answer (photo #3)

photo 3

I"ve chosen photo number 3.

(Be sure to start your answer with this phrase, after selecting the photo number).

  • I took this photo in London Zoo when I was on my trip to the UK a year ago. To tell the truth, I'm not very good at photography but this picture turned out to be a beautiful one.
  • In the foreground of the pictureyou can see a colony of pelicans. You can't but agree with me that pelicans are large birds with very long beaks. They have a long neck and short stout legs with webbed feet. The tail is short and square. They have pale plumage with some gray feathers on the wings.
  • On the left of the picture there is a pond where the birds can swim. The zoo keeper told us a lot of interesting things about pelicans. She explained us that some species could make their nests in the trees while the others nest on the ground. It was interesting to know that they can fly but cannot dive because of their light skeleton. I also learned that pelicans live up to 25 years in the wild and up to 40 years in captivity. But the most amazing fact is that pelicans never store their food in their throat pouch contrary to popular folklore. They use it for catching fish.
  • In the background of the pictureyou can see a girl taking photos. At this particular moment the birds are cleaning their feathers after being fed. Guess what! We were allowed to give them some fish and it was really exciting! All in all the weather was warmish and I had a great time there.
  • I took this photo because I had never seen those birds before in real life and wanted to remember all places I had visited in London.
  • I decided to show you this photobecause you are interested in photography and have got a big collection of snapshots of birds. I think it would be great if you could add my picture to it.
  • That's all I wanted to say. (mandatory phrase for the examiner, indicating the completion of communication)

The main mistakes that students make when completing this assignment:

  • description of three pictures instead of one;
  • incorrect interpretation of the content of the picture;
  • the lack of expressing one's opinion about the plot of the picture;
  • the absence of colloquial clichés when describing the picture;

Task 4 representscomparison monologuetwo photographs or pictures.

To successfully complete this task, you need to adhere to the proposed plan:

  • give a brief description of the photos (what is happening in the picture, the scene)
  • say what these photos have in common (what theme unites them)
  • tell me how these pictures are different
  • express your preference in one of the photos
  • explain why you are close to the topic of the selected photo

Preparation time - 1.5 minutes

Length of your response - 2 minutes

Maximum score - 7 points

Next Tipshelp you compose a logical description of photos or pictures:

When describing rooms or housesuse the right-to-left or left-to-right technique (so called "walking tour of the house");

When describing photographs or paintingsuse the reception from left to right, right to left, from the edges to the center, from the foreground to the back;

When describing a person use the top-down or bottom-up approach.

Task4 Variant 1

  • explain why

Start your answer with opening phrase:

I would like to compare and contrast these two photos. / I would like to point out right at the beginning that there are different ways of going in for sports. And these two photos prove that.

I should say that the common theme of these pictures is doing sports. / I think the common thing here is ... / I believe that the theme which relates these photos is ... / One thing that picture 1 and picture 2 have in common is...

Sample answer:

Let me start with the first picturewhich shows a little girl who is in the gym at the moment. The girl is going to play table tennis because she is carrying a red tennis racket in her hand. As we can see the gym is well equipped. In the middle of the gym there is a big blue table with a tennis net on it. In the background of the picture you can see some sports facilities such as flying rings, a gymstick, a rope, a hoop and others. All in all, it seems to me that the gym is quite large and light.

As for the second picture it showsa young man running in the field. It might be summer time because he is wearing a green t-shirt, black shorts and white sports shoes. Also, he is wearing a watch on his wrist for timing his heats. Though the sky is blue and the weather is warm and sunny you can see two mountain peaks covered with snowin the background of the picture.

As I"ve already mentioned both picturesare connected with doing sports. You can't but agree with me that both - a girl and a young man look fit and healthy.

Obviously, we can see certain (some) differences. The first picture shows a little girl whose hobby is playing tennis. On the contrary, the man in the second picture is a professional sportsman as he looks very sporty and strong. besides, the first picture shows the girl who is playing tennis indoors while the young man is going in for sports in the open air. Moreover, table tennis is a team game and you need at least one more person to play it with. As to the track-and-field athletics, you can do it on your own.

As for me I "d prefer to take up to table tennis because I am fond of doing sports with my best friends or relatives. Secondly , this game develops quick thinking and reaction. finally , you can do it outdoors as well as indoors and bad weather cannot spoil the pleasure.

in conclusion, I would like to say that both pictures make me think that sport is a great way to spend your free time and, of course, it is useful for your health.

That "s all I wanted to say. Thank you for listening. / That" s where I "d like to end.(final phrase)

There were 25 phrases in total. It is necessary to build your answer in such a way as to meet the time allotted for the answer (2 minutes). Recommended number of phrases: 12 -15 , but not less. Remember that the opening and closing phrases are judged by experts; their absence will negatively affect your score.

Task 4 Variant 2

Study the photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

  • give a brief description of the photos (action, location)
  • say what the pictures have in common
  • say in what way the pictures are different
  • say which kind of the activities presented in the pictures you"d prefer
  • explain why

Start your answer with opening phrase:

I would like to point out right at the beginning that I will compare and contrast these pictures.

I believe that the theme which relates these photosis a life style of the youth.

Let me start with the first picture that shows a group of young people who are at work now. The man on the right and a young woman in a black suit are sitting around the table while the woman in a beautiful white suit is standing at the moment. Unfortunately, I can't see the face of their boss who is giving them some instructions. They are listening to him very attentively. It looks as if they are ready to make some notes because you can see pads(notebooks) in front of them.

As for the second picture I have the impression that the group of young people is enjoying their free time sitting on the grass. I can only guess that they might be co-students at the international language school because you can see them carrying their workbooks. They are probably having their break time now. As the weather is warm and sunny, they decided to spend it in the school yard. They all are smiling and look very happy so I think they did their test successfully.

I should say that the only similarity between picture 1 and picture 2 is that they depict young people who are practically of the same age.

One of the main differences between pictures is that in the left picture you can see two men and two women (four people) working in the office whereas in the right picture there are two girls and a boy who are having a rest in the open air. The most obvious difference for me between these two pictures is people's clothes. For example, people in the first picture are wearing suits according to the dress code of their firm, while people in the right picture are wearing casual clothes such as jeans, jumpers and trainers.

As for me, I would rather go to a language school because my dream is to speak English fluently. Moreover, it would be interesting to make some new friends from abroad.

To sum it up, I would like to saythat to work or to study together with smart and intelligent people is always a great pleasure.

(end phrase)

Task 4 Variant 3

Study the photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

  • give a brief description of the photos (action, location)
  • say what the pictures have in common
  • say in what way the pictures are different
  • say which kind of the activities presented in the pictures you"d prefer
  • explain why

Start your answer withopening phrase:

I would like to compare and contrast these two photos.

I think the common thing here is classical music.

Photo 1

Let me start with the first picture which showsa young girl who is performing on the stage at the moment. She is wearing a white blouse and a dark skirt. She is playing the grand piano together with a string orchestra. In the background of the picture there is a beautiful organ . In the foreground of the pictureyou can see a lot of spectators. That's why I can say that music is not just her hobby but she is involved in it very seriously.

As for the second picture it also showsa young girl playing the piano. She looks very elegant in her black velvet dress. As you can see she is wearing glasses. In the background of the pictureyou can see a portrait of a famous composer. Unfortunately I'm not very good at classical music that's why I don't know his name. Under the portrait there is a basket of lovely roses, so I can only guess that it might be the anniversary of the composer.

As I have already mentioned the theme which relates both pictures is classical music . The most obvious similarity between photo 1 and photo 2is the musical instrument the girls are playing and it is a piano. It is evident that the girls are practically of the same age. In my opinion, they might be very talented.

You can't but agree with me that's the main differencebetween picture 1 and picture 2 is that the girl in the first picture is performing in a big concert hall whereas the girl in the second picture is playing the piano in a small room.(It is probably the classroom in a local Art School.) besides , the girls are wearing different items of clothes. Last but not least , in the first picture you can see a lot of audience while in the second picture we cannot see any listeners.

As for me, I would rather go toa big concert hall because I've always wanted to listen to the organ.

Summarizing, I may say that it is great to have a good ear for music and play a musical instrument because music always makes your life brighter. (23)

That's where I'd like to end.(end phrase)

Task 4 from the section Speaking at the USE 2015 in English, use the following expressions:

Firstly - firstly

Secondly - secondly

Thirdly - thirdly

moreover - more than that

It seams to me / It looks like / It might be -I think/should be

I can only guess I can guess

If I "m not mistaken - If I'm not mistaken...

I "m not sure exactly (what this is) but ... -I'm not sure exactly what it is, but...

As for me / To my mind / In my opinion / I think / I believe / Personally -As for me / In my opinion / I think / I'm sure / Personally, I...

In contrast / Unlike ... - Unlike

The most apparent/obvious difference (similarity) between photo 1 and photo 2 is ...- The most obvious difference (similarity) between photo 1 and photo 2...

The main difference/similarity between picture 1 and picture 2 is ... -The main difference / similarity between photo 1 and photo 2 ...

The only difference/similarity is ... -The only difference/similarity...

To sum it up I would like to say that ...To sum up, I would like to say...

All in all, it's evident ... - In general, obviously ...

Summarizing, I may say that ...To summarize, we can say that...

The main mistakes that students make during task 4:

  • description of the plot of two pictures, not their comparison;
  • lack of allocation of common and distinctive characteristics of the pictures;
  • lack of expression of attitude to the pictures;
  • lack of introductory and closing phrases;
  • lack of colloquial clichés when comparing pictures;
  • phonetic and lexical-grammatical errors in the answer.

English tutor m Otradnoye analyzes in detail task C5 of the oral part of the new demo version of the exam in English 2017. With us, you will pass the speaking of the exam well.

1 General remarks

If you ask yourself who, in the first place, the USE in English is designed for in its current form, the answer is obvious: a very average student. This follows from the rigidity of the framework, from the formality of the criteria for evaluating the answer, and from many other signs.

What should a weak student do in such a situation? Standardize as much as possible, that is, have most of the answer ready, and almost never change it.

The problem is that a strong student needs to do the same. To paraphrase a well-known saying about the Russian parliament, we can say that the classroom for passing the exam in English is not a place to demonstrate your knowledge of the English language. You must demonstrate understanding of the criteria and compliance with them.

2 Photo selection

The choice of photography, as we all understand, is a critical moment that determines the success rate of 60-70%. Not only do you have to decide quickly what will be easier to describe, but the main points of your description must come together with the choice.

As an example, consider the latest demo version of the USE 2017.

My selection is usually based on the following criteria.

2.1 Be sure to take photos with people, but it is desirable that there be 1-2 of them, and not many.

By this criterion, I would immediately exclude photo 2, and would choose from 1 and 3.

2.2 A person or two or three people must do something simple, not allowing double and complex interpretation.

Photo 1 is suitable - running. In second place in this sense is photo 2 - they are watching a movie. But it’s hard to explain right away why there’s no one else in the hall. Photo 3 also satisfies this criterion - the guy works as a waiter. But it's hard to explain exactly where.

Photo 3 is very attractive, but I do not fully understand what is happening there. Whether it is volunteers - and not everyone knows this word, although it is simple. If this is a school practice, then it is not entirely clear what kind of place and what kind of event.

2.3 The photo should be easy to describe.

In this sense, as a rule, nature is lighter than the interior.

In both cases, colors can always be described. But in the case of nature, the set of words is much simpler - trees, mountain, sea, ocean, river, lake, road, house(s) ... Plus, you can always say something about the weather.

My choice would be photo 1 - the most banal of all and the easiest to describe. I definitely will not be at a loss in describing a forest or a park, a summer day, etc.

Our goal is to get 3 points, that is, the maximum, according to the criterion "Solution of a communicative problem." We read the description of what 3 points are given for:

The communicative task was completed in full: the content fully, accurately and fully reflects all the aspects indicated in the task (12-15 phrases)

We translate from the linguo-clerk into Russian:

  1. Say one to three sentences for each item in the plan.
  2. Say exactly in the order in which these items follow in the plan.
  3. Say 12-15 sentences.

Here is our plan, it is always under the photo in the task:

You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12-15 sentences). In your talk remember to speak about:

Where and when the photo was taken

What/who is in the photo

What is happening

Why do you keep the photo in your album

Why did you decide to show the picture to your friend

You have to talk continuously, starting with: "I"ve chosen photo number ..."

3 Case study

So, we took photo 1. (In brackets after each sentence - the counter of the number of proposals with comments)

Picture 1

I've chosen picture number 1(0 - this phrase is not taken into account by the expert when calculating the total number of phrases) [In square brackets - advanced option]

As you know, I "m a keen photographer, and I take my camera with me wherever I go.(1 - Opening phrase)

I took this photo last summer during my school holidays(2 - where and when the photo was taken)

This photo was taken in the park next to my cousin's house. (3- where and when the photo was taken)

I came to visit my cousin and her family, . In the photo you can see my cousin.(4.5 - what/who is in the photo)

She is good at sports and often takes part in different competitions. In the picture she is having a morning run in the park. In the background you can see some trees. The day is beautiful, and the picture is full of sunlight.(6,7,8,9 - what is happening)

I keep this photo in my album because it brings good memories. I like my cousin very much, and we are good friends. I miss her and when I look at this photo I remember our time together .(10, 11, 12 - why do you keep the photo in your album)

I decided to show this picture to you because I've always wanted you to meet my cousin. Next summer I'm going to her/Smolensk again.(13.14 you decided to show the picture to your friend)

Why don't you join me?(15 - final phrase)

That's all I wanted to tell you.(16 - obligatory final phrase)

Our task is completed - for such an answer we will get the maximum.

4 Criteria for evaluation by experts

Be sure to look at the end of the demo and read the evaluation criteria. We strive for the maximum, so I give only those for which the maximum number of points is put.

4.1 Solving the communicative problem

The text of the criterion is given above. The main thing is that we reflected all the points, and said the required 15 phrases. We get 3 points, that is, the maximum.

4.2 Organization of the utterance.

This is the second main criterion.

The statement is logical and has a complete character; there are introductory and concluding phrases corresponding to the theme. The means of logical connection are used correctly.

The first phrase actually repeats the next two. If the means of logical connection are used correctly, then in order for the statement not to be logical, the arguments themselves must be taken from the work of Eugène Ionesco, one of the founders of absurdism.

Let us single out the main thing in this criterion, simultaneously translating from the linguo-clerical:

  1. There must be an explicit opening and closing phrase
  2. We must not break the order of the points: first where and when, and only then who. And then strictly according to plan. Since the plan says cast iron, it means that there will be cast iron.
  3. We certainly have means of logical connection. This is a double use of because. Even weak learners do not make mistakes in using because. In addition, we have a trump card in the form of as you know in the introduction phrase. Should I use something else? Definitely - no. Yes, and in terms of time, our performance is at 1’25 "", if not back to back.

With all their desire, they will not be able to find fault. But I assure you, the experts have little desire to quibble. The most reasonable thing is to consider them neutral. They will not drown, but they will not pull anyone either.

But there is no need to pull us, we pulled ourselves out - 2 points, that is, the maximum.

4.3 Language design of the statement

The used vocabulary, grammatical structures, phonetic design of the statement correspond to the task (no more than two non-rough lexico-grammatical errors AND/OR no more than two non-rough phonetic errors are allowed).

The only thing I did not understand from the already quite extensive communication with experts is how they use AND / OR. Unfortunately, they do it simply - they treat it at the maximum level of rigor, always choosing OR. Thus, we can only make a mistake twice.

We must try not to make mistakes, but in such a way that it does not put pressure psychologically, so that, God forbid, we do not get squeezed. And play it safe: if you're not 100% sure of a word or grammatical structure, don't use it.

There are no grammatical errors in our text, it remains to say it correctly. It is not too complicated, I would even say simple, and it is generally difficult to make a mistake in it. So - 2 points and 7 points in the end, that is, the maximum.

5 How to prepare

The principle is simple - as soon as you have difficulty saying it from a sheet, take paper and write.

The algorithm of actions does not change whether you say or write:

1 Quick selection of a photo according to the criteria of point 2

As a result of the choice, you should have a short chain of main points in your head, such as: cousin - good at sports - running / training in the park - next to her house

2 Maximum standard

- introductory and final phrase, in general, everything that is possible should be standard. At the same time, you should not chatter and give the expert the impression that you know your performance by heart. Even if suddenly you know everything by heart, give the impression that this is not so.

Let's see how much standard is in our answer:

I've chosen picture number…
As you know, I "m a keen photographer, and I take my camera with me wherever I go. I took this photo last summer during my school holidays
The day is beautiful, and the picture is full of sunlight.
I keep this photo in my album because it brings good memories. I like my (….) very much, and we are good friends. I miss her and when I look at this photo I remember our time together
I decided to show this picture to you because I've always wanted you to meet (…..) Next summer I'm going to (…..) again.
Why don't you join me?
That's all I wanted to tell you.

There are 112 words in this passage. Our full text has 177 words if we omit everything in square brackets, and 193 if we use everything in square brackets.

Thus, in our text 112/177 = 63% of the standard, that is, learned by heart in advance, in a simple version. In the advanced version, we have 112/193=58% of the standard.

The ratio 193/177=1.09 shows the degree of freedom of your creativity in this task. 10%.

6 Conclusion

I wanted to show two things - that task C3 leaves you with very little freedom, and that you should not be afraid of it.

Any average student can get the maximum, or near the maximum, if he strictly follows my recommendations.

Be creative - change my advice specifically for yourself.

While exercising, record yourself on the smartphone recorder and do not forget about the noise problem, which I wrote about in the article How to prepare for the oral part of the Unified State Examination in English 2017.

In the following articles of the cycle, I will consider photos that are inconvenient for describing:

Speaking Unified State Examination 2017 - (С5 -44) - uncomfortable photos II

Introductory words are taken into account when scoring. In C5 they should be 4 and not necessarily intricate, while in C6 - 5-6

When completing the tasks of the oral part of C5 and C6, be sure to use introductory and linking words to connect sentences. The transition from one point of the plan to another should be smooth and logical.

conclusion

Hello colleagues!

I'm finally ready to write this post. The question is relevant and many readers asked me if I would write a similar post, as with.

In general, today I will introduce you to my vision of task No. 4 from the oral part of the exam - a comparison of pictures. If you have any comments, write in the comments, we will discuss together.

I must say right away that the template below is mainly designed for children with a low level of English, but who also need to be prepared for the exam, so do not judge strictly!

After looking through many publications that talk about the oral part, I decided to make my own template using phrases and clichés from different books. I think that's what many teachers do - pick something in between that's easy to remember!

So, let's take the following task as an example.

Let's take as an example

Task 4. Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:
give a brief description of the photos (action, location)
say what the pictures have in common
say in what way the pictures are different
say which of the game presented in the pictures you'd prefer
explain why

Any story should start with a short introduction.

Introduction

These (Here) are two photos. They are connected with the topic (sport, party, food, family, travelling, weather)

I am going to compare and contrast these two photos (pictures).

Brief description of the photo(no more than 2 phrases for each picture, who is depicted, what they are doing and where they are. Use Present Continuous)

In the first photo (picture) we can see ...

The second one (picture) shows us (depicts) ...

Talking about similarities(First, it's better to say about the obvious similarity)

These two photos have a lot in common.

The main similarity between these two photos is ...

Another similarity is...

Talking about differences(for a successful answer, it is desirable to identify at least 2 differences)

However, these photos have some differences.

Firstly, the main difference between two photos is ...

Secondly, in the photo on the left we can see... in the photo on the right ...

We talk about our preferences

As for me, I would prefer ... because ...

If it is difficult to argue your answer, you can say something general, for example,

  • I always wanted to try it
  • It suits me better
  • It helps me to...
  • I like it (I am keen on / enjoy) and I think it "s ... (adjective)

Conclusion

  • In conclusion, I would like to say …
  • I hope I have managed to compare and contrast these photos

Well, now let's proceed directly to comparing photos using our template phrases and clichés.

These are two photos. They show people playing football in different places. I am going to compare and contrast these two photos.

In the first photo we can see a boy and a girl. They are playing table football in a recreation area. The second one depicts a group of young people. They are playing football on a football pitch.

These two photos have a lot in common. The main similarity between these two photos is the desire to win. Another similarity is the feelings and emotions of players. They are very excited and focused.

However, these photos have some differences. Firstly, the photos were taken indoors and outdoors. The second difference is the clothes they are wearing. In the photo on the right the football players have a special uniform. Thirdly, it is the numbers of players.

As for me, I would prefer to play table football because I am keen on this game very much. I think it's very exciting and I recommend everyone to play it. I'm not a big fan of football. Moreover, it's hard to run over 90 minutes, especially when it's cold outside.

I hope I have managed to compare and contrast these photos.

Also, a novelty in preparation for the oral exam of Radislav Milrud USE was released. English language. oral part. practice tests

P.S. You can watch a few more tips and examples of comparisons in this video, you can show it to your students. This is one of the options

Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

  • give a brief description of the photos(action, location)
  • say what the pictures have in common
  • say in what way the pictures are different
  • say which kind of the activities presented in the pictures you"d prefer
  • explain why

You will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12-15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.

1. I have two pictures and I want to describe and compare them.

2. In the first picture I can see a girl who is running in the forest. There are many green trees in the background and the weather is fine and sunny. The girl is wearing light clothes and she is alone. In the second picture I can see a gym with some treadmills and there are three girls who are running on the treadmills.

3. These two pictures have some common features. Firstly, in both pictures you can see girls. Secondly, they are wearing some sports clothes and they are running.

4. However, these two pictures have some differences. The most important difference is the location of the pictures: in the first picture the girl is running outside and she is alone, while in the second picture there are three girls and they are running in the gym. What's more, the girl from the second picture is running on the path, while the girls from the second picture are using some special running equipment.

5. I'd prefer to go running in the forest in the open air just like the girl from the first picture. And I have some reasons for my choice. Firstly, I think that it is more pleasant for me to go running in the open air. Secondly, I think the atmosphere is the first picture is more relaxing and I am fond of doing sports activities outside.

6. All in all, running is a very good way to keep fit and you can go running in many places. (All in all, tastes are different and people can choose whatever they want).
