Make a pear at home. Do-it-yourself punching bag: features of making it from a bag and PVC fabric. What materials to use

A good punching bag costs a lot, and cheaper options are usually of such quality that they are more likely to bring harm rather than benefit during training.

In order to get a high-quality punching bag, you can try to make it yourself. To make such sports equipment you will not need a lot of money or special materials. We can say that a punching bag can be made from scrap materials.

Moreover, when self-production With such sports equipment, you can calculate the required weight and size of the bag, as well as select the appropriate filler.

An important issue when making a pear is the choice of materials for the cover and filling. These may be the most different materials, differing not only in operational properties, but also in service life.

The following materials are used for punching bag covers:

  • Natural leather. This best option, because it is durable and at the same time it will not hurt your hands.
  • Leatherette. Its properties are similar to leather (provided it is of high quality), but with a strong impact it can burst, so if used, it should be in several layers.
  • Tarpaulin. Not the best option, it can scratch your hands.

The following can be used as filler:

  • Sand
  • Sawdust
  • Horsehair
  • Crumb rubber

Since horsehair is now difficult to find, as well as crumb rubber, a combination of sand and sawdust is most often used. To ensure that these materials do not deteriorate over time, it is better to calcinate them (sand) and dry them thoroughly (sawdust) before filling them.
You will also need:

  1. Strong thread, such as nylon
  2. Steel wire
  3. Reinforced tape
  4. Bag
  5. Pliers
  6. Scissors
  7. Sewing hook or large needle

How to make a punching bag

  • At the first stage, prepare a pattern for the cover of the punching bag as shown in the figure: h is the height of the punching bag, D is its diameter. Exact sizes are selected according to individual parameters. Along the edges of the pattern you need to leave a couple of centimeters of allowance for seams, and on top leave an allowance for a steel wire ring - 5-10 cm. Four holes are also made to secure the chain to the steel ring.
  • The pear is stitched along the side seam, and then the product is turned inside out and the bottom is sewn. Then the cover is turned back onto the face.
  • The metal chain is cut into four pieces of 20-30 cm or two pieces of 40-60 cm. The steel wire is folded into a ring equal in diameter to the pear. Sections of chain are strung onto this ring and distributed evenly across the four corners.
  • This ring is inserted along with the chains inside the upper edge of the pear and wrapped around the edge of the material, and four chains are placed in pre-cut holes.
  • The upper edge of the pear cover is stitched to ensure that the steel ring holds tightly. A regular bag is inserted inside, which serves as an additional cover for the filler - so that the sand does not spill out during boxing. Provided that the outer cover of the punching bag is made of several layers and its seams are tightly stitched, you can do without the inner bag.

    Filler (a mixture of sand and sawdust) is poured inside the boxing bag. Their ratio depends on the required weight and rigidity of the pear. It should be borne in mind that sand is heavier and harder, and over time it will settle in the pear. If you sprinkle only sand, then over time the pear will become harder at the bottom and softer at the top. The best filler will be crumb rubber or plastic balls. If the weight of the filler is insufficient, you can use a weighting agent inside the pear in the form of a metal rod or another narrow bag with heavier filler.

  • The finished punching bag is hung by chains.
  1. If desired, you can wrap the punching bag with reinforced tape (available in hardware stores) - this will prevent your knuckles from getting knocked down.
  2. If the pear is filled with sawdust, then you need to carefully look through it and remove all the chips, because they can tear the cover and injure your hand.
  3. The weight of the pear is usually made equal to the weight of the opponent, that is, on average, pears weigh 90 kilograms.
  4. Instead of chains for the pear, you can use springs from old sofas. Firstly, there will be no clanging from the chains upon impact, and secondly, the sound of the impact will not be transmitted to neighbors.

Most novice athletes can only dream of purchasing such a solid simulator. Meanwhile, you can get a quite decent, durable and easy-to-use pear for much less money; for this you just need to buy the most necessary materials and make it yourself.

How to make a punching bag at home

Before you get to work, decide on the design and dimensions of your future simulator, then select the tools and consumables necessary to bring this idea to life.

The most popular type of sports equipment of this kind is the average punching bag, which can have a classic pear-shaped or the more common now elongated cylindrical shape. A cylindrical bag is much easier to manufacture, so we advise you to opt for a simulator of this particular configuration.

What can you make a punching bag from?

Cotton fabric or leatherette - inexpensive, accessible, but far from best material for sewing a punching bag. Even the strongest and thickest plain weave fabric has little elasticity, so a pear cover made from such material can burst from the first sharp blow.

Tarpaulin - more suitable material for making a punching bag, but it also has its serious drawbacks - the rough surface of the tarpaulin covering breaks down the skin on the knuckles when practicing punches without gloves, and the filling of the bag leaks through the pores between the threads and collects dust.

Leather (artificial, with a reinforced textile base, or even preferably natural) - best material for making a punching bag.

How to make a punching bag: instructions

To sew a punching bag you will need:

  • material for the top of the pear;
  • scissors;
  • awl and pliers;
  • especially strong, reinforced threads;
  • a sewing machine capable of sewing leather, or a hand triangular needle for sewing leather;
  • ruler, pencil or tailor's chalk;
  • thick burlap for the inner cover;
  • thick steel wire and a piece of steel chain;
  • material for filling the projectile - seeded sand, dry sawdust, rubber crumbs or fine expanded clay.

Work progress

Cutting and sewing

  1. On the underside of a piece of leather or tarpaulin, mark the contours of the parts of the outer cover of the exercise machine. The pattern of a cylindrical punching bag consists of two elements - a circle with a diameter of 30-45 cm and a rectangle with a height of 90-130 cm. Select the parameters that best suit you from this range of sizes, and determine the width of the rectangle by multiplying the diameter of the bottom of the simulator by 3.14.
  2. Cut out the pear pieces, leaving seam and hem allowances. At the top of the rectangle, add 10 cm to the hem, on the sides, along its lower edge and along the perimeter of the circle, add 3 cm.
  3. Fold the rectangle face inward, align the side cuts and sew the workpiece along them (with an indentation of 3 cm from the edge) according to the previously applied markings.
  4. Sew the bottom into the resulting pipe in the same way.
  5. Turn the workpiece onto its face.

Product assembly

  1. Cut 4 pieces 25-30 cm long from the chain, put them on a steel bar, roll it into a ring whose diameter is equal to the diameter of the pear. Connect the ends of the rod by welding.
  2. In the upper part of the cylindrical workpiece, stepping back 6-7 from the edge of the material, make 4 holes with a diameter of 2-3 cm at equal intervals.
  3. Place the steel ring inside the workpiece and pass the chain sections through the holes made. Going around the bar, turn the edge of the leather inward by 8-9 cm, and especially carefully sew the hem along the cut. As a result, the fastening ring should be securely fixed in the upper edge of the simulator.
  4. Place an inner cover (sewn in a similar way from thick burlap) inside the leather blank.
  5. Pour filler into the inner cover, lightly compact it, and tie the cover.
  6. Assemble the upper links of the chain sections together, and hang the projectile on a mount corresponding to its weight.

Then you can put the bag inside the bag, this way our punching bag will be denser and tougher.

You can fill the bag:

Rags (sewing waste), old clothes and sand, the more sand, the harder the bag will be;

Crumb rubber, it can be taken from any tire shop - this is waste from cutting tires;

Expanded clay chips, this is more difficult to get, but you can ask at building materials stores.

You can also use sawdust. It is better to dry them first

2. Tube from a car tire

This is a pretty good and simple option for a home punching bag. All you need is an old camera from a car, the larger the camera, the better, the main thing is that it is intact. Make a small hole and fill the chamber halfway with water. Then the hole can be sealed. Such a projectile will be quite heavy, and the weight can be adjusted by the amount of water, and you can hit it without worrying about your hands, since the chamber with water is quite soft.

3. Car ramps

This option is suitable for those who can train outside, who have private house, next to a sports ground or forest, there is a garage in which you can train. I used to train on such equipment myself, and you might have already seen it on sports grounds! It consists of taking several tires from cars and putting them on a pipe or tree pole. If you don’t have anything to wear, you can simply stack them one on top of the other in the corner of a garage or building on the street. This way, you will get a hard projectile that will last forever, but you definitely need to work on it with gloves or cue balls with bandages!

4. Car tire on chains

A similar option to the previous one, but here you only need one tire and chains to hang it somewhere in the yard.

5. Old mattress

This is the simplest and most homemade version of a boxing bag. You take an old mattress, roll it up and tie it with rope. That's it. You will have a soft bag, although it will be quite light; you won’t be able to work on strength, but you can work on accuracy and speed.

6. Partner with paws or makiwaras

This is not exactly a bag, but if you have a friend who can help you with training, and will also work out himself, and, accordingly, paws or makiwaras that he can hold, then this can completely replace a boxing bag and does not require space or fastenings.

How to secure the bag at home?

There are several options for how you can attach the bag at home:

1. If you don’t have the opportunity to hang a bag at home, then you can simply put it in a corner, and if it’s small, then make two of these bags and lay one on top of the other.

2. If you have a horizontal bar at home, you can simply tie the bag to the horizontal bar with ropes.

3. If you can drill walls at home, then it is better to buy a special fastener for projectiles, which can be easily found on the Internet for little money, and attach it at home.

4. There are also special fasteners that are attached to the ceiling, this makes it possible to hang the bag in the center of the room! Thus, you can move around it, and the projectile itself can move quietly.

5. You can also attach it to the ceiling with just one dowel and for this you only need one hole. And if you remove the bag, the fasteners in the room are not noticeable at all. This is convenient for those who do not want the bag hanging in the room all the time.

6. Stand for a punching bag - this is a more expensive option, but also quite simple. To do this, you need a couple of pipes or angles and a welder who will connect them together. The design can be different, the main thing is that it is stable.

Not only oligarchs, but also average people can set up a home gym for themselves. Even in a small room you can always find a corner for a punching bag, with the help of which the whole family will keep fit. But the cost of such sports equipment will completely discourage you from exercising if you do not use simple recommendations on how to make a pear at home. Next, you will learn how to build a homemade projectile with your own hands.

What is a pear made of?

The pear is made of two parts: a filler and a container into which this filler is poured. The bag acts as a container (see photo).

To make a bag use:

  • very dense fabric;
  • tarpaulin;
  • artificial or natural leather.

Several materials act as filler:

  • fine crushed stone;
  • sand;
  • sawdust.

How to make pear at home?

Now that you have decided on the material, you can begin preparatory work. You will need three bags and appropriate fillers. The bags are sewn from the fabric that was chosen for the pear. The most preferable is leather, since dense fabric will soon begin to lose sand, and the tarpaulin itself is very hard - it will be impossible to approach it without gloves. And exercises for the legs will simply be impossible, as the legs will get tired quickly.

Each bag should be 1-2 cm larger than the previous one. It is not recommended to sew a pear from a bag used for sugar or flour, because... they most likely will not withstand even three training sessions and will break through.

The seams are made with nylon thread, each row is stitched three times. Glue is applied over the thread seam, which is used to fasten the rubber surfaces. Some people simply make a pear out of sand, and as a short-term option it is quite acceptable.

Take the smallest bag and fill it with crushed stone. Then it is inserted into a larger bag. The distance between the outside of one and inner surface the other is filled with sand. After this, the third bag is pulled, and the layer between the surfaces must be filled with sawdust. It should also be taken into account that after the first training, the third layer will settle a little, and it will be necessary to supplement it with sawdust, so the filling paths should open easily.

How to make a pear, for example, from an old one leather jacket with your own hands, you can watch the video.

It is also possible to make a pear from car tires.

Fasteners for punching bag

There are several options to create a reliable fastener for the pear:

  • use eyelets and carabiners used by climbers; you will have to tinker with inserting the eyelets a lot, although in the end the pear will turn out to be quite decent;
  • cut a circle from thick plywood, drill holes in it for the rope, stretch the rope, securing it with knots on back side; the circle will have to be covered with leather and firmly sewn into the pear.

There are no difficulties in how to make a pear at home. Except for the hard work with the fabric, which is very dense. It will be possible to work with it only with the help of special tools.

The dimensions of such a homemade pear can vary, and with high-quality processing of the fabric, you can make these for friends or even the gym. The very first training sessions will help you evaluate your work not only visually, but also through direct contact.

Few things relieve stress like having a punching bag at home. This is an absolutely safe method from a social point of view of releasing unnecessary energy, getting rid of stress, and so on. In addition, do not forget that it can also be useful from a practical point of view if boxing or its analogue is your hobby.

However, a good punching bag can cost a lot of money, which is why this stops many from purchasing it. There is a way out of the situation - you can simply make a similar bag yourself. It will be quite inexpensive, and the result will be no worse than the purchased version. Plus, you'll have a great time during the bag making process, which is also great.

Choosing material

First you need to decide what material you will use.

If you want to go as cheap as possible, you can simply unravel the inseam of your old jeans and then sew them together.

Go through it carefully, several times, so that the seam holds well. But such a bag won’t last especially long. Although denim is durable as a material for pants, it will not withstand such use for long.

Much more suitable options are:

  • tarpaulin;
  • leatherette;
  • dense leatherette.

If you decide to use tarpaulin, then you need to make several layers to increase its strength. Also keep in mind that, due to the characteristics of its surface, you will have to handle it exclusively with gloves.

Leatherette or, if you have the opportunity to get it, real leather is the most suitable material that you can work with with your bare hands.

Sand or sawdust is usually used as filler. Your choice will depend on how heavy and dense you want the bag to be. Although, for the sake of hand health, it would be best to prefer crumb rubber.

Selecting the size

The size you choose depends on your needs.

For example, you can make the diameter around 50 cm, but the height is best made around 120 centimeters, this is the option recommended by professionals.

When you calculate the length of the fabric, do not forget to add 5-10 centimeters for seams and joins.

Making a bag

Now you need to start creating the bag. It's actually very simple. We need to take the material of the size we need, then fold it in half and sew two parallel lines. The distance between them is the diameter of the punching bag.

If you want to make everything tighter, then you should sew several more similar bags and put them inside each other.

Do not forget to make all seams very reliable, durable, preferably triple, use thick nylon threads. It is best to coat the seams with rubber cement.

Now add the required filling that you have chosen. If you have made several bags, then it will be best for you to pour the heaviest filling into the smallest one, and the softest filling into the largest one. This way you won’t break your hands, and the weight will be sufficient.

Please note that after some time the filler will fall down, so you will need to add a little more.

Hanging

Now it’s important to hang the bag, and hang it very well, because how well it’s hung will determine how comfortable it will ultimately be for you to handle it.

The most straightforward method is to sew the ring into top part, and then attach the chain using climbing carabiners.

You can make it simpler - cut a circle out of plywood that matches the diameter of the bag. A hole is drilled in its middle. A strong rope is threaded into this hole, which is then tied in a knot to hold it securely. The design is then sewn into the projectile.
