How to set a new default font in Word 2007 2010?
Everyone knows how you can change the font in the Microsoft Word software product. It is enough to select the "Home" tab in the "Menu" and specify the desired one among the drop-down list of fonts.
But what to do when you need to work with a large number of documents and there is simply no time to edit the font every time (selecting the appropriate font, its size, indents, paragraphs).

All this can be done by configuring the appropriate style by default.
To do this, we need to click on the icon for editing styles in the "Home" tab. In the window that appears, you need to select "Create a new style."

Another window will appear in front of us, in which we can select the default font and its size from the drop-down list.

In addition, by clicking the format at the bottom, we can select more detailed font settings, as well as set up such elements as paragraph, tabulation, border, frame, numbering, keyboard shortcuts.

After setting the desired settings, you should check the button to apply this template in all new documents and click OK (so that our settings are saved). Close Word (Word) and start it again. Now we have all the font settings we have chosen and we can work safely without being distracted by editing the font.
Depending on the situation and preferences, the document can be made, say, ornate, bold or semi-bold, the letters can look like ordinary capital letters, or they can look like printed letters, in general, there are a lot of variations.

Let's imagine the most elementary situation that happens to everyone who works in Word: you are typing text, and you understand that this font does not fit this document in its style. There is a desire to change the font, which we, in fact, will do now.
Do the following:
Select all the text or fragment for which you want to change the font. This can be done, for example, by simultaneously holding down the key combination on the keyboard Ctrl + A. Or you can work the old fashioned way: hold down the left mouse button and move it down until the end of the text.

So in Word 2010 this is the Calibri font, but if there are those who like Arial or another standard Windows font, then you can make it the Default font.

After the text is selected, open the "Home" section, the "Font" category. There you will see a line with an arrow that you need to click on. You will see a very long list with standard fonts for the Word program. If you move the arrow on one of them, you will see how your selected text changes. Or, if you know what font you need, you can immediately start looking for it without being distracted by other options.

Please note that you can set the desired font even before you start typing the text. Accordingly, before starting the process, simply select the desired font in the same way as described above. How to set default font
If you work with only one font all the time, you can set it as the default so you don't waste time changing it every time.
To do this, open the "Home" tab, the "Font" block, in the lower right corner of which there is a small arrow. In the window that appears, set the desired font, and then click on the "Default" button, which is located at the very bottom. Done, from now on all your files will be printed with this font. However, at any time you can change it by selecting another one, and use the previous paragraph of this material as tips.

Method 1 Windows

1 Download fonts from reliable sources. Font files may contain malicious codes, so download fonts from reputable and trusted sites. Delete EXE font files. In most cases, fonts are downloaded in ZIP, TTF, or OTF formats. Reliable sites where you can download fonts are the following:
dafont.com
fontspace.com
fontsquirrel.com
1001freefonts.com

2 Unpack the downloaded archive with fonts (if necessary). If the font files are packaged in a ZIP format, you will need to extract them from the archive in order to install and use the fonts. To do this, right-click on the archive (ZIP file) and select "Extract All". This will create a new folder with the font files that were packaged in the archive.

The archive (ZIP file) packs font files in TTF or OTF format. These font formats are supported by Windows. Do not install fonts that are downloaded in EXE format.
3 Open the font folder. Find the folder with the downloaded and unpacked font files. Leave the folder window open.

4 Open the control panel. You can install fonts using the control panel. The way you start the Control Panel depends on the version of Windows you are using:
In Windows 7, Vista, XP, click "Start" - "Control Panel".
In Windows 10, 8.1, right-click on the Start button and select Control Panel.
In Windows 8, press ⌘ Win+X and select Control Panel.

5 Switch to icon display mode. If your control panel is in category view, switch to icon view (small or large). This will make it easier for you to find the Fonts icon. In the upper right corner of the Control Panel window, open the View menu and select either Small Icons or Large Icons.
6 Click Fonts. A window will open with a list of all installed fonts.

7 Drag the downloaded font files to the Fonts window. Drag and drop TTF or OTF files into the Fonts window to install the new font. If you are logged in as a normal user, you may be prompted for an administrator password. It will take some time to copy the fonts. Look for the new font in the Fonts window to make sure it has been installed.

Click Save.

Check the Embed fonts in file box. Select an open document from the drop-down menu.
Consider whether you want to embed only those characters that are used in the current document. This will allow you to reduce the file size of your document, especially if you are only using a few characters of the new font.
Save and share the document with other users. The fonts will be automatically embedded into the document when it is saved.

Method 2 MacOS

1 Find the font you want to download. On the Internet you will find many sites with fonts that you can download for free (for use on your home computer). Mac OS supports both OTF and TTF font formats (these are the most common font formats). Many fonts are downloaded as archives (ZIP files). Popular sites where you can download fonts are the following:

dafont.com
fontspace.com
fontsquirrel.com
1001freefonts.com

2 Unzip the archive (ZIP file) containing the font files. Some fonts are distributed as archives, especially if there are multiple files for the same font. To unpack the archive, double-click on it, and then drag the fonts to your desktop or to a separate folder.

3 Double-click the font file you want to install. The font will open in a preview window.
4 Click Install Font. Now you can use the font in any program that has the ability to change fonts.
5 Start Word and select a new font. To do this, open the Font menu in Word. This menu displays fonts in alphabetical order.

Adviсe
The installed font will be available in all Microsoft Office programs.

Main formats of computer fonts:

Type 1 (or PostScript) - created by Adobe in the PostScript description language. Font Type 1 is implemented as a set of 3-4 files: pfb-file - contains information about the contours needed for printing; atm file - contains information about the width of characters and the spacing between them (kerning); inf file contains installation information.
During the font installation process, Windows creates a pfm file (it serves as a bitmap representation of characters on the monitor screen) using information from the .atm and .inf files. In what follows, only .pfb and .pfm files are used.
Type 1 fonts do not come standard with Windows and are used primarily in design and printing. As an example of a font implementation in the PostScript language, these are PDF documents.

TrueType is a font developed by Microsoft and Apple. Adequately renders character font characters to the monitor and printer. Was developed as an alternative format to Type 1 (or PostScript) fonts.
These fonts consist of 1 .ttf file (on Windows).

OpenType was created by Microsoft and Adobe. Includes features from previous formats. Implemented in Unicode, i.e. the font is capable of containing more than 65,000 characters. These fonts, like the previous ones, consist of 1 file with the .ttf extension (on Windows).

Gdr - Symbian OS font file

Inf - Info (Informational) - Installation file in some fonts

Pfa - PostScript Font File

Pfb - Print Font Binary (font file format) - contains information about outlines. Print Font Binary

Pfm - Print Font Metrics (font file format) - contains information about the metric

Pfr - Portable Font Resource - Portable font resource file

Xfn - X/Open Federated Naming - Corel Ventura Printer Font File (Xerox Printer Font)

Xft - X FreeType - ChiWriter printer font file

Fnt - Font - regular Windows font file

Fon - Font - fixed size bitmap font

Otf - Open Type Font - open type font file

Ttf - True Type Font - TrueType font

Ttc - True Type Collection - an extension of the TrueType format that includes tables that allow you to store several TrueType fonts in one font file (font file).

2. The downloaded font must be unzipped (if it was in the archive).

3.You can install the font in several ways, for example:

1) Open the Fonts folder (Start-Control Panel-Fonts). And now just copy the desired font to this folder. The font will be installed automatically.

2) Open the Fonts folder, click on the "File" menu bar and select the line. "Install font". In the window that opens, select the directory where the font that has not yet been installed is stored and click Ok.

In general, you need to transfer the downloaded font to the C: WINDOWSFonts folder in any way.

How to remove a font.

Open the folder with fonts (directory C: WINDOWSFonts), select the font and press Delete.

Do not forget that:

If you install a new font on your computer and use it in a document, the document will display correctly on another computer only if it has the same font installed. Otherwise, text written in this font will be displayed in the default font (usually Calibri or Times New Roman).

In Microsoft Word, you can embed the font you want to keep the character style in your document. This will increase the size of the Word document, but will display the fonts used correctly. Only TrueType and OpenType fonts can be embedded.

How to embed a font in a Word document.

In the window that opens, check the box "Embed fonts in file" and click Ok.>

You have probably noticed more than once that text in Microsoft Word documents can be displayed in different fonts. Some documents have more readable fonts, while others are made "antique". In general, there are a lot of fonts in the Microsoft Word text editor, but, unfortunately, not all of them “work” with Russian or Ukrainian texts.

In Russia and Ukraine, the main fonts used in documents, books or magazines are Arial and Times New Roman. The latter, in turn, is used in business documents (for acts, reports, term papers or theses), but Arial can most often be found in journalistic texts.

Let's see how you can change the font type of the text. There are several ways to do this, but we will consider only two of the most common.

First way

1. Select part of the text (or all text) whose font needs to be changed.
2. In the tab " home"Find the section" Fonts».

3. Click on the drop-down list of fonts. In my case, the main font (by default) is Calibri. And we will change it to Verdana and apply it to the selected part of the text.

As you can see in the image above, when you click on the section with available font types, a list will open in which I chose the one I need. When you hover over different fonts, the text will automatically change - a preview of the changes.
4. After selecting the desired font type, click on it and the text will be converted.

Second way

1. As in the first method, select the text.
2. Right-click on the highlighted text.
3. In the called context menu, click on the section " Fonts».

4.The " Font". In it you will see an area where you can select the font you need using the scroll wheel.

After you find the desired font - click on it (it will be highlighted in blue), then click " OK».
