Acrylic - the beginning of work and some subtleties. How to paint with acrylic paint: technique, necessary materials and tools, step-by-step instructions and expert advice How to use acrylic paints

Among the many paints and varnishes used for the production of repair and construction work, compositions based on acrylic occupy a special place.

The attractiveness of colors is due to:

  • almost complete absence of smell;
  • short time required to dry the paint layer;
  • a wide color palette and amazing brightness of paints offered by manufacturers;
  • high resistance to adverse environmental influences.

In addition, acrylic paints are quite affordable for consumers even with a very modest budget.

All these circumstances contribute to their popularity and ever-increasing demand.

Acrylic paint - what it is, its advantages and disadvantages

From the name of the paint it is already clear that the basis of the paint are polyacrylic resins, which are considered an environmentally friendly material.

The coating obtained after the application of acrylic paint, in fact, is a thin layer of plastic that is impervious to water, but at the same time breathable.

The composition of the paint includes the following substances:

  • binder;
  • coloring pigments;
  • solvents;
  • fillers;
  • additives.

The binder in this case is a polymer dispersion, for the manufacture of which acrylic resins are used. It is the binder that connects all the ingredients of the colorful composition. It is the binder that is responsible for the qualitative structure of the future coating. In addition, it provides the necessary adhesion of the paint to the treated surface.

The pigment provides the desired shade and color of the paint. Usually it is a fine powder that does not dissolve in the binder, but is evenly distributed in it.

Pigments can have different origins:

  • inorganic;
  • organic;
  • natural pigments;
  • artificial origin.

The solvent helps to lower the viscosity of the paint composition.

Filler - a substance responsible for the ability of the paint to cover the painted surface. It is a fairly large particles of acrylic inclusions that increase the viscosity of the paint, improving its adhesion to the surface (adhesion). In addition, the filler largely determines such paint properties as matting and protective characteristics.

Additives serve as auxiliary ingredients necessary to give the paint certain properties.

These include substances such as:

  • PVA and emulsifiers;
  • organic solvents;
  • initiators;
  • stabilizers;
  • biocides and preservatives;
  • defoamers.

Acrylic colorful compositions have an impressive list of important advantages.

Advantages of colorful compositions:

  • Environmental safety - in the manufacture of paints, no substances harmful to human health are used.
  • Fire safety - in the composition of paints there are no flammable substances.
  • The speed of drying of the painted surface, which is usually 1-3 hours.
  • The widest color palette, unlimitedly expanding the possibilities of using paints to create extraordinary interiors.
  • Simplicity and comfort of application, consisting in the absence of smell, fast film formation, easy washing off of paint from hands and tools.
  • The coating obtained after applying the paint is characterized by high strength, elasticity, abrasion resistance and ease of maintenance.
  • The paint film formed on the surface easily passes air, but is moisture resistant.
  • High-quality acrylic paint can last more than 10 years without losing its properties.
  • Due to its resistance to UV radiation, moisture and mechanical damage, acrylic-based paint can be used both in rooms with any microclimate (including humid ones) and for facade decoration.
  • Acrylic paints can be applied to almost any material, except for some types of plastic.

The disadvantages of acrylic compositions include the following properties:

  • Low adhesion to some types of plastic - this applies mainly to paints of previous generations, modern compositions do not suffer from this.
  • Fast drying can cause equipment problems if the paint is applied with an airbrush, for example. Even with a short break in work, its nozzle may become clogged.
  • Some acrylic paints can change their color and gloss quite a lot as they dry on the surface. Therefore, between applying layers of paint, it is advisable to take a break so as not to paint the surface once again.
  • It is better not to clean the painted surface with products containing abrasive particles.

Depending on the chemical composition properties of polyacrylic resins can vary within fairly wide limits.

Therefore, the paints and varnishes produced on their basis also differ.

Acrylic paints are divided into the following types:

  • Water-based natural drying.
  • Compositions based on thermoplastic polymers - cold drying. In their production, organic solvents are used, which at room temperature volatilize within 1-3 hours. These are weather and light resistant paints and with a range of operating temperatures from -50 to +180 degrees.
  • Compositions based on thermosetting polymers - hot drying. These paints have higher performance. At a temperature of +125 - +180 degrees, they dry out in 15-30 minutes. These paints form hard and shiny, moisture-resistant surfaces, they are resistant to atmospheres and have a long service life.
  • Water-soluble paints of high-temperature drying. These compositions are mainly used for coloring metal structures and details. Drying is carried out at a temperature of +110 - 150 degrees, a strong film is formed in 10-45 minutes. These paints are of limited use.

It has long been known that universal material- this is good, but even better if it is produced for the intended application.

Based on this principle, acrylic compositions are divided according to their intended purpose into many types.

Namely:

  • fabric paints;
  • for wood;
  • on concrete;
  • on glass;
  • for metal;
  • for outdoor work;
  • for interior work (subdivided into compositions for the floor, walls, ceiling, bathroom and others);
  • automotive;
  • artistic paints;
  • aerosol.

As for construction and repair work, two types of paints are most often used here:

  • in organic solvents. They are more often used for outdoor work, including when finishing facades. These compositions can be applied to the surface in almost any weather and in a fairly wide temperature range from -20 to +30 degrees. At the same time, an elastic, sufficiently strong layer with vapor permeability is created on the painted surface. When painting wood, paint protects it from fungus, mold and other biological pests.
  • On a water-dispersion basis. These compositions are used mainly for work inside the building, since they are environmentally friendly. Matte acrylic paint is often used for painting ceilings. And for wet rooms, floors and wooden structures gloss compounds are used.

For this purpose, acrylic paint for metal is used, which is often called "automotive". Its basis is organic solvents, which is reflected in the cost - it is higher than that of paints for construction work. A feature of the use of such paint is the need to first use a special primer that protects the metal from corrosion and improves adhesion. Paint for metal dries quickly and is applied in several layers.

For independent use, paint is produced in cylinders - it is convenient to paint small surfaces with it.

Artwork

Here acrylic paints found the most wide application. They are used both in traditional painting on canvas, and for creating drawings using airbrushing, for painting various objects, and even for manicure.

How to choose

The first question that we have to figure out is: what are we going to paint? After all, it is important not only that the paint has the desired color, but the scope of its purpose.

All compositions are divided into the following groups:

  • interior;
  • facade;
  • highly specialized;
  • universal.

The highest demands are placed on facade materials. Therefore, such compositions are the thickest, with a high content of a binder, and they also use the most persistent pigments. In this regard, the cost of paints for outdoor use is usually higher. You can also use these compositions for painting surfaces inside the house, but this will unnecessarily increase the cost of repairs, and the improved characteristics of the paint will remain unclaimed.

Interior paints are environmentally friendly, so the binder content is reduced to a minimum, while the amount of pigment is increased.

All compositions intended for interior work must have high abrasion.

Since they have to withstand repeated cleaning, including with the help of brushes.

If you decide to buy paint "in reserve" and do not yet know exactly what you will use it for, then purchase a universal material. It can be used for almost any purpose and materials.

These are, for example, snow-white paints for heating radiators. They are highly resistant to high temperatures and abrasion. You can also find special colorful compositions designed for processing structures and products from a specific material - wood, concrete, brick, metal, glass. In this regard, the market is becoming more and more specialized.

When purchasing the paint you like, carefully study the label.

Pay attention to such indicators:

  • color fastness - usually given in months;
  • abrasion resistance - determined by the number of surface cleaning using a brush (can be from 3 to 30 times);
  • resistance to the formation of fungus and mold - important for paints used in wet areas;
  • hiding power - means the number of layers of paint necessary for high-quality painting of a contrasting surface (therefore, it makes sense to purchase not just a “liter of paint”, but focus on what area can be painted with this amount);
  • drying time - please note that glossy paints dry much faster than matte ones, and that the drying time is given for average temperatures and humidity and may vary with any deviations from their average values;
  • thixotropy - the presence of additives in the paint that help to avoid the formation of streaks during painting work.

When planning home repairs, remember that it is important not only to purchase quality materials, but to carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions for using paint and adhere to the work technology. This is what the final result depends on.

After painting, you should not immediately “test the coating for strength”, since it will acquire its final chemical resistance only after a couple of weeks. Therefore, if you are planning, for example, further decoration of the walls with paintings or stucco, then do it no earlier than two weeks after the end of the painting work.

Today, to express your "I" with the help of color and light, there are many people (professionals and amateurs from painting) who are ready to teach you drawing lessons. The lessons are staged in stages both on YouTube and in various articles on the Internet, where they will tell you in detail and easily how to learn how to draw, show the available techniques for writing with various colors on various canvases, at the same time they will tell you what painting styles are accepted by artists.

By the way, the artist will never say about his work: “I painted!”. Artists paint pictures like a musician writes music, where every note is like a stroke of a master's brush.

Try to become a master of your feelings and emotions, pick up brushes, open paints, stand in front of the canvas and start painting!

The most common are gouache and watercolor, a person gets acquainted with them in early childhood. Oil paints require a more respectful attitude to themselves, they are applied tightly to the canvas, in several opaque layers and dry for a very long time.

And there are paints that combine the ease of use of gouache and the oily density of “serious” paints. These paints are diluted with water, dry quickly, which allows them to be applied layer by layer without the risk of spoiling the drawing, and after drying they do not fade or change color. Moreover, they are also waterproof (after drying, of course) and completely hypoallergenic! These are liquid acrylic paints.

You will object that you already met with acrylic paints when you made repairs construction works in your own home, and you know for sure that acrylic is a liquid plastic, a polymer. Right. So, you already know the properties of acrylic and are aware that this polymer easily falls on wood and glass, fabric and plaster, what can we say about canvases and cardboard! You also know that in addition to weatherability, acrylic paint can create volume, so many artists use acrylic paint to paint three-dimensional paintings to give them a sculptural relief on a flat canvas.

Look at Justin Geffey's acrylic painting.

Impressive? But he is self-taught! And I also once faced a choice: “What paints are best for a novice artist to paint?” — and settled on colored polymers.

I must say that working with acrylic allows you to use both traditional painting techniques and various modernist “tricks”, allows you to mix styles and techniques, which will make your paintings more interesting and emotional. But acrylic paints have their own characteristics, you need to be able to handle acrylic paints.

Basic techniques for working with acrylic

  • Wet. Diluted paint is applied to the canvas moistened with water. It's kind of like watercolor painting.

  • Dry. It will take several brushes to edit strokes on the canvas "dry".

  • Glaze. This technique involves the formation of a pattern from thin translucent layers. Applying layers in stages, we get beautiful iridescent colors that give our picture richness and a sophisticated mood.

  • Impasto. Very similar to working with oil paints in pastos technique. Dense, non-translucent pasty layers applied with a flat brush or palette knife (something like a small spatula) can create relief. Impasto is a special drawing technique, completely opposite to the glazing technique!

What may be needed for drawing?

First of all, the artistic acrylic paints themselves. If you doubt your ability to mix different paints or are afraid of not getting “in color” when applying color, then it is better to use ready-made paint palettes, since acrylic paints are now available in about 130 colors in tubes (tubes) and in small plastic jars - containers.

If you are just starting to paint with acrylics, so to speak, take courses for beginners, try your hand as an artist with basic undiluted colors: white - black, red - blue, yellow - green, brown.

And do not take on complex work right away, buy an ordinary children's coloring book, and try to color any picture using your favorite acrylic painting technique.

This is a good practice for beginners - having learned to work on small areas, you will understand how to use acrylic paints when writing large canvases. It is important to remember when using acrylic paints that they dry very quickly and you can not keep them open!

What else do you need:

  • Long brushes made of natural and synthetic hair - flat and round in different numbers. Plastic pile will be needed when working with undiluted acrylic; natural "colon" or "squirrel" - for watercolor technique.
  • A set of palette knives of different sizes. A palette knife is a tool that artists use to clear their palette and apply thick colors to canvas. A kind of trowel knife made of flexible steel strip or dense plastic.
  • Bottle with clean water(preferably warm). You also need a spray gun for wetting working surface so that the acrylic paint lays better on the canvas.
  • Palette. On it you will place part of the paint for convenience or mix paints together, using one as a dye or color for others. It is very convenient and economical to use ordinary disposable plastic trays or plates. You can purchase or make a palette that will keep moisture in the paint. The whole secret is two types of paper. The first, bottom layer absorbs water and therefore is always wet, the second is parchment, covering the paint from above.
  • Retarder (thinner) for acrylic paints. It will not allow a polymer film to form quickly, and will make it possible to carefully work out the drawing on paper or canvas for drawing. Such an “addition” will also increase the ability to spread, shade the paint and make it a little brighter. You can apply directly to the paint, or you can just use a brush. How to use them correctly is written in the instructions for use.

How to paint with acrylics using a palette knife? Just like with oil, applying thick paint in even layers or a relief stroke.

Having understood the peculiarity of such an application, and having learned how to work with a palette knife, you will appreciate its wide possibilities and will be able to work with polymer paints on wood or canvas, and even give a master class to beginners on how to use it correctly in work so that the picture with acrylic paints turns out not only bright, but also bas-relief volume.

Among other things, you need to prepare:

  • a large volume of water in a deep container for washing brushes;
  • paper or cloth napkins and towels;
  • sandpaper grit P120;
  • felt-tip pens, markers, gel pens or chanting (a glass or copper tube with a thin nose for drawing fine contour lines) to complete the drawing;
  • glue for decoupage;
  • the airbrush is also applicable if you are sure that you are using it correctly, and the acrylic paint is diluted in the proper proportion;
  • and, of course, the basis for the painting with acrylic paints.

On the video: we draw space with acrylic.

We prepare the basis

Everything that requires your attention in artistic transformation can serve as the basis: a piece of cardboard, a plywood board, a canvas on a board, or an easel stretched over a stretcher.

Can I make my own canvas on which to draw? Yes. And even necessary! The law is simple: we learn to draw - I learn to make a canvas for drawing on my own. For example, a wooden board will serve as the basis for a future masterpiece. How to make the polymer of acrylic paints easily “hook” and not crumble afterwards? For the best adhesion effect (adhesion), we take texture paper or for origami and glue with decoupage glue the area of the board on which we will paint with acrylic.

In order for the background for the drawing to be even, and the drawings themselves to turn out bright and beautiful, without distortion (such as we need!), We remove with a needle all the bubbles that have appeared on the future canvas - we make a puncture in each and remove the air. But even now something is missing to start drawing correctly. Our canvas looks clearly unpresentable. Painting on a fresh canvas is postponed: you need to use a primer for the canvas.

10-15 layers of decoupage glue will serve as a primer, each of which is applied only after the previous one has completely dried.

It's time to polish our base, for which we have prepared "sandpaper". They do this: slightly moisten the surface of the canvas with water and rub it to the desired gloss. The smoother the first layer of ground, the easier it is to paint on the canvas. Now we need to get a uniformly white background. For this, white has been used all our lives, we will do the same. We apply, wait for drying, if necessary, sand again.

The "canvas" made by us contains all the characteristics for creating a picture with your own hands, on which art acrylic paints will easily and firmly fall.

Before you start painting with acrylics, check out our recommendations:

  • The degree of transparency of acrylic paints is regulated by adding water to them, but if there is more than 20% water, then the paint will easily peel off when it dries.
  • To process a drawing with paint, you need to start with large details with brushes with high numbers, and only then move on to smaller details that are subject to brushes with lower numbers.
  • After rinsing the brush after the used color, blot it on a clean cloth or paper towel, this will protect the painted flowers from excessive color spots. When mixing paints, use an acrylic thinner.
  • When drawing, use only the tip of the brush, so there are more chances to distribute the paint evenly.
  • When mixing, move the paints towards each other, and do not “push” one into the middle of the other.

If you need to use a straight line that clearly separates one color spot from another, stick electrical tape or masking tape on the dried area. After you can easily remove it, and the straight line will remain.

In order to know how to mix acrylic art paints correctly, the video tutorials below may come in handy, where they explain to you that the best acrylic paints are those with which you can paint something beautiful. Oh yes! We do not draw, we write the music of our mood!

How to draw with acrylic (2 videos)

Acrylic - it is plastic, but the technique of drawing resembles watercolor. The only difference is that after drying, acrylic paints become waterproof. Consider some of the features of working with acrylic.

What to draw on?

Suitable for acrylic painting:

  • canvas;
  • cardboard;
  • plywood;
  • board;
  • glass;
  • paper.

Also prepare brushes with long handles, a palette and water.

What to draw?

Do not puzzle over the idea of drawing for a long time. If it's hard to come up with something original, create a still life from improvised items. You can also buy flowers or pick field ones. A beautiful stone, a view from the window - everything can serve as kind.

Drawing abstractions can also serve to improve skills. Draw a spot and think about what it looks like. Develop the idea, add details. Gradually you will learn to feel the colors.

1. Acrylic dries quickly, so keep a spray bottle of water handy to wet the paints on your palette.

2. Use paint in small quantities.

3. Acrylic squeezed out of the tube is opaque. Experiment with the transparency of colors by adding water to them. A large amount of moisture will allow the use of watercolor painting techniques. But you can not break the proportion of 50/50, otherwise the acrylic will not be able to fix well and will crumble.

4. Start painting with large color spots using large brushes. Gradually move on to working out small details and take thin brushes.

5. When washing off paint from brushes, do not forget to blot them to remove water.

6. Reflection of work in the mirror will help to notice errors.

7. Practice mixing colors with each other. It's not easy, but with practice it's possible to learn how to do it faster.

8. Adding thinner will help slow down the drying of the acrylic.

9. To achieve a perfect straight line, use adhesive tape.

10. To make the color lighter, mix the paint with white. Do this carefully and little by little, kneading thoroughly.

11. Mixing paint with black will make it darker.

12. Dried paint looks darker.

13. For safety, the work can be varnished.

How to paint with acrylics on canvas or paper?

1. You need to choose a basis for drawing. You can draw on paper, canvas or board. You need to choose the basis on which the acrylic can easily be fixed.

2. Collect all the necessary materials. For painting, you may need items such as: 1-2 cups of water, an old rag (you can use a cloth), a palette knife, soap for cleaning brushes, a spray bottle for water.

  • Acrylic paints They dry very quickly, so you need to spray the palette with water to keep the paints wet.
  • Use newspapers or junk paper for your desk so you don't have a big mess.
  • You can wear a work robe - this will keep your clothes clean.

3. Choose a good location. Many professionals recommend painting in natural light. A place near an open window works well, as well as an ordinary room with good natural light.

4. Prepare materials. Bring cups of water, brushes, paints, a palette. Put on an old bathrobe and cover the workplace with newspapers.

5. Idea for drawing. It is difficult for beginner artists to decide what to draw. Think maybe you want to draw a specific subject or 3-D object. What can be painted with acrylic paints:

  • Photo;
  • vase with flowers;
  • a bowl of fruit;
  • sunrise/sunset;
  • items from your home;
  • something from your memory.

6. Sketch with a pencil. Use a regular pencil to roughly sketch the main shapes of the drawing onto the canvas.

7. Mix paints. Prepare all the colors you need to work with the drawing.

8. Analyze your composition. Put the subject so that it has some kind of nice background on the back. Pay attention to every detail. As you work, you will need to recreate everything you need for your drawing.

9. Paint the background. First of all you need to start drawing the background. Drawing from the background to the front is one of the most simple ways create a beautiful drawing. Throw in the midtones first, then the dark ones, and then the brightest ones to make it easier.

10. Make time for the little details. Draw all the main details of the background. Apply shadows, highlights, little unnoticed details, add texture, etc.

11. Draw the main object. Draw it with solid shades, break the object into simple shapes or parts. When you work out the basic shapes and parts, your drawing will start to look great.

  • Remember how tones are applied, first medium, then dark, and then light.
  • Apply the paint with a dotted line, hold the brush vertically and tap it on the paper.
  • Use a palette knife to smudge broad strokes of color.
  • To create a blur of color, you need to dilute the paint with water. So the paint on the canvas gradually becomes lighter. In this way, you can create a good color gradation effect.

12. Cover your painting with a layer of varnish. When the picture is covered with a layer of varnish, it is protected from various damages.

13. Clean your brushes, objects, and work area.

14. Leave the painting for a while to dry. Usually the painting dries in 1-2 days.

How to draw with Acrylic paints in stages - video

Painting with acrylics is basically working with plastic. The process of applying the composition itself is similar to working with watercolor, but after drying, a waterproof surface is formed. Therefore, it is important to know how to use acrylic paints correctly in order to get a good result.

First of all, you need to make sure that the material is constantly in working order. Such a composition dries very quickly, so you need to squeeze acrylic paints out of the tube in small portions. If a plastic palette is used to mix colors, it is better to prepare a spray bottle with water in advance to spray the surface, preventing the material from drying out ahead of time. When using a damp surface such as wax paper, a sprayer is not required.

It is very important to wipe the brush regularly. To do this, keep paper towels or rags on hand, on which to blot the instrument after each wash. This will prevent water from getting into the drawing.

The paint on the palette should be squeezed out in small portions, but the main thing is to keep the brushes constantly clean.

On a note! Acrylic paints will become opaque when dry if applied thickly. If you dilute the material strongly with water, you can use it as a regular watercolor.

It is important to remember that after drying, a waterproof pattern is formed, so you can safely apply the next layers without the risk of dissolving the previous ones. The colors of the top layers will optically blend with the bottom layers, resulting in an interesting visual effect. You should also take into account the fact that the glazing must be really thin. If one of the layers is made thicker than the rest, then the pattern from below will be almost invisible. Therefore, it is better to carefully stretch the material over the surface with a working tool.

In order to increase the flowability of the acrylic material without losing color, it is necessary to use special solvents, and not plain water. It is also very important to work quickly when mixing paints of different tones. To create sharp and clear lines, it is recommended to use adhesive tape. It can be glued onto the drawing without consequences, applied the next layer, and then removed.

Clear demarcated lines are easier to apply with masking tape, while the paints themselves are diluted only with special formulations

In order to properly paint on the masking fluid, you need to make sure that it is completely dry. This substance is suitable for any grounds, but before using it, you need to get used to it a little. Do not apply a thick layer of material and leave the brush unwashed after use. If the masking liquid dries on the tool, it will be easier to throw it away than clean it. Therefore, immediately after application, the brush should be treated with a solvent.

Advice! Acrylic paint can be used as a regular glue. If the objects are not very heavy, it is enough to apply the material to the surface, and then press the object and leave for a few minutes.

Various drawing techniques

To begin with, a set of 6 colors is enough, then the master constantly working with this material gradually buys other colors. Ideally, the palette should consist of 18 shades. In addition, you will need some tools and supplies.

As a basis on which the drawing will be applied, you can use wooden planks, glass or plastic surfaces, canvases, metal sheets, paper and cardboard products. The working tool can be synthetic or natural brushes of various sizes. With the correct dilution of the material, it is permissible to use an airbrush.

A small set of brushes is enough for beginners, only well-trained artists can work with professional sets and airbrushes.

When using acrylic paints, it is important to remember that different colors must be mixed to obtain the desired visual effect (see). For these purposes, plastic or paper palettes are used, and for dilution - water and solvents. If you plan to use pure acrylic, then synthetic flat and wide brushes can be used as a tool. Work with such material should be as fast as possible.

Before you start using acrylic paint, you need to learn about painting techniques:

  1. The simplest method of drawing is called "wet". As a base, a paper canvas, which is pre-moistened with water, is suitable. Paints are also diluted and applied to the surface. The advantage of the method is that the drawing is very wet, so there is time to apply details and correct errors.
  2. A technique that requires several brushes is called "dry". In this case, we are talking about a dry canvas on which diluted paints are applied. The material dries quickly, so it is important to work with several clean tools.
  3. Quite often, the technique of glazing is used. A thick layer of acrylic paint or masking liquid is first applied to the base, and after drying, paint over it with diluted materials.
  4. The impasto technique involves the use of wide thick brushes. In this case, the strokes are thick, and the picture itself resembles an oil painting.

Working with a wide brush gives an interesting artistic effect.

Features of painting various materials

Working with acrylic paint may differ in some nuances depending on the base on which the drawing is applied. But there is one general instruction for preparing for work:

  • The first step is to choose the basis for the drawing.
  • Then you should familiarize yourself with the range of material and choose the one that fits the chosen basis. When using acrylic paints, it is important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations, which are indicated on the packages.
  • Next, you need to decide on the technique in order to prepare brushes and additional expendable materials. It is recommended to use felt-tip pens, markers and ink for finishing work.

It is most difficult for a novice artist to decide on a theme, and only after that, through trial and error, style comes.

On the paper

For acrylic painting, a sheet of thick paper, which is designed for watercolor, is suitable. It is inexpensive, so it is perfect for a beginner. In addition, the material has a shallow embossing, making it very easy to apply paint. There are both individual sheets and albums for sale. To work, you need a palette, a base, a container of water and a few brushes.

The first simple work is preferably done on paper.

As a working material, you can use the simplest and cheapest acrylic compositions. First, a sketch is applied, after which a background is created using paint and a wide brush. You need to work as quickly as possible so that the composition does not have time to grab. If you want to create a watercolor effect, you need to wet the foundation. For an oily effect, dry sheets should be used.

on canvas

After practicing on paper, you can proceed to a more complex canvas painting technique. It is better to use a small product to start with. First of all, you need to transfer the sketch to the canvas using a photo of the intended drawing. The application technique is the same as when working with paper, only the canvas needs to be regularly sprayed with water from a spray bottle - so the transitions will turn out smooth.

On fabric

As a basis, you can use canvases made of cotton or silk. Before starting work, you need to prepare the fabric: wash it, dry it and iron it. Then the material is stretched on a special frame. Next, you should act according to the following algorithm: using a marker or pencil, apply a drawing to the fabric, paint using art brushes of various sizes, leave the fabric to dry for 2 days. After that, wash the fabric and iron it with a slightly heated iron.

On glass

by the most original way manufacturing decorative elements interior is a painting of glass or mirrors. For this you need to prepare:

  • contours for drawing;
  • acrylic paint and solvent;
  • brushes of different sizes;
  • palette;
  • cotton buds.

Glass painting instructions:

  1. First you need to clean the base. To do this, the glass is immersed in warm water for half an hour, and then treated with alcohol.
  2. Then you should transfer the drawing to the workpiece.
  3. Trace the lines using the outline.
  4. Apply acrylic paint in layers with breaks to dry the material.
  5. In conclusion, the resulting product must be varnished.

Acrylic compositions are so durable that they can safely paint dishes and stained glass windows.

Important nuances of working with acrylic paint

With the help of products painted with acrylic, you can create really unique interior. Fabric canvases will look great instead of wallpaper on walls or ceilings. Glass inserts will decorate drywall niches. In addition, such canvases can be used as paintings. The main thing is to follow the above instructions and remember the recommendations of the material manufacturers. And, of course, give free rein to imagination and not be afraid to experiment.

Very often, when choosing a paint for construction, buyers stop just at acrylic. And this is no accident - it has a number of advantages that are valued by consumers, for example, durability and bright color. Painting with acrylic paint, which paint to choose and how to apply it correctly, you will learn from this article.

Acrylic dyes are common not only in the construction business, but also in painting. They are often chosen for creating designs on cars, used in nail salons for painting on nails.

Before applying such a dye, the surface must be prepared.

You need to perform some actions, namely:

  • clean the surface of all kinds of contaminants;
  • treat with a primer if the surface absorbs moisture too much;
  • bring the paint to the desired consistency;
  • use a brush or roller to apply paint;
  • provide the required temperature, not lower than +10°C;
  • prepare water to clean the brushes.

If the paint remains after work, it must be tightly closed with a lid, otherwise everything beneficial features will be lost, and in the future it will be impossible to use this dye.

  • Non-toxic and environmentally friendly

In the manufacture of acrylic paints, not a single substance is used that can harm the human body.

  • No smell

Acrylic paints have absolutely no smell, so working with them is convenient and pleasant.

  • Does not burn

Flammable substances contained in this paintwork no, so you can not be afraid of fire.

  • Dries quickly

The thickness of the layer affects the speed of drying, but, as a rule, this has time to happen in a couple of hours.

  • Huge selection of colors

The color range of acrylic paints is truly diverse. Probably for this reason it is chosen not only in construction, but also in painting.

  • It is not afraid of dirt and does not let in moisture, while allowing air to pass through

  • durable

  • elastic

  • Increased durability

  • It does not require special care

  • durable

Manufacturers often claim that acrylic paint may not lose its external properties for 10 years.

  • Wide application

Acrylic paints are well resistant to ultraviolet rays, are not afraid of mechanical stress and tolerate moisture. They are suitable for both wet areas and outdoor use.

  • Universal

Acrylic-based paint is unpretentious and can be combined with all sorts of materials. It is compatible with most surfaces. This dye is not combined only with plastic, or rather, with some of its varieties.

According to the scope of use, acrylic paints are divided into 4 types:

  1. outdoor;
  2. internal;
  3. paints for painting;
  4. automotive.

Facade acrylic paint consists of a number of additives that protect it from direct sunlight, moisture and abrasion. This type of paint is suitable for any outdoor work. They can cover the facade, gate or fence.

Acrylic paints for rooms are not so protected from external factors. But they also have a number of advantages, such as easy application to the surface and a long service life. For painting the ceiling and walls, there is a special type of paint. In addition, there are universal dyes that are equally suitable for outdoor and indoor use.

Acrylic dyes are also in demand for painting cars. They are applied to the body, which changes the appearance of the car beyond recognition. There are also compositions specially created for painting, used in painting. Even for painting nails or painting on fabric, acrylic dye can be used.

Compositions on acrylic are great for a variety of surfaces, most notably for metal and wood. With their help, you can paint walls and ceiling surfaces, and universal paints, justifying their name, can be used in almost any conditions.

Most acrylic paints have special advantages that set them apart from others. These include:

  • moisture resistant paints;
  • lightfast;
  • washable;
  • resisting mechanical stress.

There is also a division according to the degree of gloss. In addition to matte and glossy acrylic paints, semi-gloss and silky-matt are also available.

Table. Technical characteristics of facade paints.

Type ofCharacteristicsPeculiarities
latex, acrylic Easy to remove excess, durable, fast drying, can be applied even on damp surfaces, incompatible with previous oil-based finishes, elastic. Virtually no smell. Water-soluble, used for wood processing, brickwork, plaster and properly primed metal surfaces. They are not diluted, with careful work you can get a uniform thin layer. Do not crack over time. These are breathable paints that are resistant to fading in the sun.
Oily, alkyd They dry very slowly (from 12 to 48 hours), smell strongly, are difficult to clean, but are durable and have good adhesion, especially on whitewashed surfaces. They are painted in one layer, cleaned with a solvent. Based on synthetic resin, they adhere well to old multi-layer alkyd coatings and chalk, and have excellent hiding power. Do not paint galvanized iron and fresh masonry. The thick consistency makes it more difficult to apply, but this paint adheres better than latex paint. The coating must be protected from rain until completely dry. In direct sunlight, the paint fades, over time it may crack due to oxidation.

Acrylic-based paint is easiest to dilute with water. This is not only simple, but also effective, because water is part of the acrylic paint. But it should be remembered that this type of dye dries quickly, and then creates a protective waterproof film, so the tool must be cleaned after work as soon as possible before the paint has dried.

Also, a thinner is well suited for dissolution, which the paint manufacturers themselves readily recommend. It significantly affects the characteristics of the paint, thereby making it possible to add shine and saturation to the coated surface.

  • mix water and paint in equal proportions. Thanks to this, it will be possible to achieve the ideal mass and convenient application;
  • when diluting paint with water in a ratio of 1: 2, you can create a thin layer that evenly covers the surface;
  • when diluting, it is important to take into account the proportions that are dictated by the type and thickness of the required layer. The thinner layer you want to achieve, the more water you need to add.

Dried paint is more difficult to thin out. To do this, grind it to a powder state, pour boiling water over it. When the water cools, you need to drain it and repeat the procedure again. After that, you will need to get rid of excess water and mix the paint. Although the dye can be made usable, it should not be applied to critical areas. After drying, the paint partially loses its properties, so it will not look the same as before. For outdoor work, it is no longer very well suited, except when painting an outbuilding.

Using acrylic paint is quite easy, especially if you know its features and subtleties of working with it.

This can help you instructions for the correct painting of the ceiling:

  1. First of all, you need to prepare the surface for painting. The ceiling surface is cleaned of existing contaminants. In addition, it should be as even as possible. In the event that the ceiling has not been painted before, it is pre-primed before applying the composition. The primer will save paint and protect the coating from fungus or mold.
  2. The paint remaining on the ceiling must be disposed of with a spatula. This is important, since the presence of even small particles of paint on the surface makes painting impossible.
  3. Existing chips or cracks are sealed using putty. When it dries, it needs to be rubbed, then apply a primer and only then take up the application of paint.
  4. Prepare everything ahead of time. essential tool: a brush, a roller, a separate dye container, a stepladder or ladder, the paint itself.
  5. Start painting from the corners using a brush, as a roller is not suitable for this purpose. Once you've finished painting the corners, brush around the perimeter of the ceiling. And only after that you can continue painting with a roller.
  6. The first coat of paint can be applied in any direction. But the last painting should be carried out strictly towards the window. With this simple technique, you can achieve the effect of smoothness.

Acrylic-based paint dries quickly enough, so painting the ceiling can be done in one day. In addition, acrylic paints do not smell at all, which is why they are often chosen for finishing work.

You can apply them in two ways:

  • previously diluted with water or special mixtures;
  • in the form of a paste, when choosing this method, a thickener will be needed.

To dilute the composition, a separate container will be required, if this is done in a jar of dye, then when the moisture evaporates, it cannot be used.

To paint the facade with such a composition, you need to perform a number of simple steps:

  • Pre-prepare the surface

The facade of the building must be absolutely clean. Any dirt is not allowed. Also make sure that there is no fungus on the walls. Repair cracks if you find them.

  • Apply a primer

When the surface is completely ready, it is required to apply a primer. This improves the adhesion of the composition to the surface, in addition, the paint can be saved.

  • Paint the facade

Coloring is done by hand with a brush and roller. If you have a spray gun, you can use it. You need to apply at least two coats of acrylic paint. The second can be applied only when the first is completely dry.
