Exists four generations of SD memory cards :

  • SD 1.0- holds the amount of information from 8 MB to 2 GB
  • SD 1.1– up to 4 GB
  • SDHC– up to 32 GB

Memory cards differ not only in size or volume. One of the main parameters is speed exchange information with the device.

SD card speed manufacturers designate either in the form class, or in the form multiplier:

  • SD class 2– write speed not less than 2 MB/ With 13x;
  • SD Class 4– write speed not less than 4 MB/s, which corresponds to the multiplier 26x;
  • SD class 6– write speed not less than 6 MB/s, which corresponds to the multiplier 40x;
  • SD class 10– write speed not less than 10 MB/s, which corresponds to the multiplier 66x;
  • SD class 16– write speed not less than 16 MB/s, which corresponds to the multiplier 106x.

As you can see, the speed class of the card directly indicates the speed of its operation in MB / s. To find out what class your memory card has - just look at its front part: it should be indicated there. For example, in this case, the card tenth speed class:

Before buying an SD memory card, you need to find out what speed class your device requires. This information should be indicated in the instructions for it.

The speed class is important for those who are going to shoot video. For example, Full HD video recording requires a recording speed of 3 MB/s, which corresponds to a Class 4 memory card. Using a slower card will cause shooting problems. However, in some cases, the video streaming rate can reach 6 MB/s. Therefore, for movie shooting, it is better to buy memory cards ranging from Class 6 and higher.

How transfer information directly from the SD card to the computer? To do this, there are special devices called card readers. The card reader can be either external (connected via a USB connector) or built into a computer or laptop.

After connecting the card reader to the computer, insert your memory card into the appropriate slot. After that, go to Windows in “Computer” - the flash drive will appear in the “Devices with removable media” section. You can open it and perform file operations.

Format

There are three different SD formats in total, available in two form factors (SD and microSD):

  • SD (microSD) - drives up to 2 GB, work with any equipment;
  • SDHC (micro SDHC) - drives from 2 to 32 GB, work on devices with support for SDHC and SDXC;
  • SDXC (microSDXC) - drives from 32 GB to 2 TB (currently maximum 512 GB), only work on SDXC-enabled devices.

As you can see, they are not backwards compatible. Memory cards of the new format will not work on old equipment.

Volume

Support for microSDXC declared by the manufacturer does not mean support for cards of this format with any volume and depends on the specific device. For example, HTC One M9 works with microSDXC, but officially only supports cards up to and including 128 GB.

Another important point is connected with the volume of drives. All microSDXC cards use the exFAT file system by default. Windows has been supporting it for more than 10 years, it has appeared in OS X since version 10.6.5 (Snow Leopard), exFAT support has been implemented in Linux distributions, but out of the box it does not work everywhere.

Cards operating on the high-speed UHS bus have only two speed classes so far:

  • Class 1 (U1)- from 10 MB/s;
  • Class 3 (U3)- from 30 MB/s.

Since the minimum value of the entry is used in the designation of the speed class, theoretically a card of the second class may well be faster than a card of the fourth. Although, if this is the case, the manufacturer will most likely prefer to state this fact more explicitly.

Max Speed

The speed class is quite enough to compare cards when choosing, but some manufacturers, in addition to it, use the maximum speed in MB / s in the description, and more often not even the write speed (which is always lower), but the read speed.

Usually these are the results of synthetic tests under ideal conditions, which are unattainable with normal use. In practice, the speed depends on many factors, so you should not focus on this characteristic.

Speed ​​multiplier

Another classification option is a speed multiplier, similar to the one used to indicate the read and write speed of optical discs. There are more than ten of them, from 6x to 633x.

The 1x multiplier is 150 KB/s, which means that the simplest 6x cards have a speed of 900 KB/s. The fastest cards can have a multiplier of 633x, which is 95 MB/s.

3. Tasks

Choose the right card for specific tasks. The biggest and fastest is not always the best. For certain use cases, volume and speed may be excessive.

When buying a card for a smartphone, volume plays a bigger role than speed. The advantages of a large storage are obvious, but the advantages of a high transfer rate on a smartphone are almost not felt, since large files are rarely written and read there (unless you have a smartphone with 4K video support).

Cameras shooting HD and 4K video are a completely different matter: both speed and volume are equally important here. For 4K video, camera manufacturers recommend using UHS U3 cards, for HD - regular Class 10 or at least Class 6.

For photos, many professionals prefer to use several smaller cards to minimize the risk of losing all the pictures in force majeure. As for the speed, it all depends on the photo format. If you shoot in RAW, it makes sense to invest in microSDHC or microSDXC class UHS U1 and U3 - in this case, they will reveal themselves to the fullest.

A class is a parameter that indicates the speed of information exchange between a memory card and the device in which it is installed. The higher the speed of the drive, the faster photos and video files will be written to it, and there will also be less brakes when opening and playing them. Since today there are as many as 3 classes, each of which can also have a different multiplier, the international organization SD Card Association (hereinafter referred to as SDA) has proposed marking certain characteristics of SD memory cards right on their case. The classes were given the name SD Speed ​​Class and currently include: SD Class, UHS and Video Class.

Thanks to this solution, anyone who wants to buy a miniature drive can simply look at its packaging in the store and get comprehensive information about its speed. But you must always be on the lookout, because some unscrupulous manufacturers, marking the card, may mean the speed of reading from the device, and not writing to it, which contradicts the SDA decision and is misleading. Before buying, look for test results on the Internet or check the drive directly in the store by asking a sales assistant about it. Using special software, you can check already purchased cards on your computer.

Write Speed ​​Classes

SD Class, UHS, and Video Class are standards for recording on a memory card. The number indicated next to the abbreviation is the value of the minimum possible speed for writing data to the device under the worst testing conditions. This indicator is measured in MB / s. The most popular is the SD Class standard and its variations, with a multiplier from 2 to 16 (2, 4, 6, 10, 16). On devices, it is indicated as the letter of the Latin alphabet "C", inside which there is a number. This value will indicate the speed of writing.

So, if you have the number 10 in the letter “C” on your card, then the speed should be at least 10 MB / s. The next stage in the development of write speed standards is UHS. On memory cards, it is designated as the letter "U", containing the Roman numeral I or III or their Arabic counterparts. Only now, unlike SD Class, the number in the symbol should be multiplied by 10 - this way you will find out the required characteristic.

In 2016, SDA introduced the fastest specification to date, the V Class. It has speeds from 6 to 90 MB/s, depending on the multiplier. Cards that support this standard are marked with the letter "V" followed by a number. We multiply this value by 10 and voila - now we know the minimum write speed to this drive.

Important: One memory card can support several, up to all 3, speed standards, but not every device is able to work with standards faster than SD Class.

SD Classes (C)

SD classes increase in an arithmetic progression, the step of which is 2. This is how it looks on the card body.

  • SD Class 2 provides speeds of at least 2 MB / s and is designed to record video with a resolution of 720 by 576 pixels. This video format is called SD (standard definition, not to be confused with Secure Digital - this is the name of the memory card format itself) and is used as a standard on television.
  • SD Class 4 and 6 allow you to record at least 4 and 6 MB / s, respectively, which will allow you to already deal with HD and FullHD quality video. This class is intended for cameras of the initial segment, smartphones, game consoles and other devices.

All subsequent classes, up to UHS V Class, about which information will be given below, allow you to write data to the drive faster and more efficiently.

UHS(U)

UHS is an abbreviation of the English words "Ultra High Speed", which can be translated into Russian as "Ultra High Speed". To find out the minimum possible speed for writing data to drives with this speed class, you need to multiply the number indicated on their case by 10.

  • The UHS 1 was designed to capture high-quality Full HD video and record live streams. The promised speed of saving information to the card is at least 10 MB / s.
  • UHS 3 is designed for recording 4K (UHD) video files. Used in SLR and mirrorless cameras for shooting video in UltraHD and 2K.

Video Class (V)

It is abbreviated as V Class and was introduced by the SD Card Association to refer to cards optimized for recording 3D video and files with a resolution of 8K or more. The number after the "V" indicates the number of MB/s to be written. The minimum speed for cards with this speed class is 6 MB / s, which corresponds to the V6 class, and the maximum class at the moment is V90 - 90 MB / s.

Memory cards are divided into the following types:

  • SD- one of the most popular types of memory cards used on various modern gadgets. The maximum volume of such a product is 4 GB.
  • SDHC– products with a memory over 4 GB and up to 32 GB. In terms of size, they are identical to the previous version, only differ in cost and volume of information capacity.
  • SDXC- cards that have a very large amount of memory up to 2 TB.
  • miniSD- a direct analogue of the SD card, differing in the size of the product. These devices are practically not used today.

By inserting a microSD card into the adapter, you can use the product with a device that supports large cards (laptop, card reader, camera). Adapters are often sold together with small memory cards. If the adapter is not included, then it can always be purchased separately, especially since its cost is negligible.

Features of using memory cards

The most popular memory cards that are used everywhere are SDHC and microSD devices. A standard memory card has a rectangular shape with a cut corner. This corner is cut in order to insert the card into the slot with only one side.

It's important to know! If, when you try to insert a card into the slot, nothing comes out, then you should turn the product 180 degrees and try to install it in the slot again. When the card is correctly installed, a click is sure to follow.

To remove the card, you need to press on it with your finger or fingernail, after which a characteristic click will follow, and the product will pop out of the slot. The principle of installing cards, both in laptops and in photo and video equipment, is identical. To insert a card into the card reader, it is enough to place it in the correct position and insert it into the slot. When a card is inserted into the card reader, it does not enter the slot completely, but only for the most part, which simplifies the way to remove it.
