Do-it-yourself repair step by step instructions. How to start repairing an apartment with your own hands. Leveling the ceiling and walls

“Yes, so that repairs in your apartment do not end!” - throws a passer-by over his shoulder and leaves home. And you stand and think: “And why is he? Did you wish for wealth or, on the contrary, ... overlaid?

But indeed, the issue of repair is an unpleasant matter for the average citizen. With today's prices for materials and services of construction Jedi, you will have to fork out seriously. And how much time and nerves you have to spend, and even live in a ruined apartment! You don't wish it on your enemy. But repair is a vital necessity, and sooner or later you will still have to face it. Some craftsmen, even in times of crisis, still manage to do the renovation of an apartment with their own hands quickly and inexpensively. But how do they do it? Inexpensive - this is a cosmetic repair with your own hands and domestic materials. Such repairs do not require large financial investments, but the cleanliness and freshness of your apartment is guaranteed. Cheap is not always bad.

Where to begin?

Get a small notebook. In it you will write down all ideas, prices and phone numbers of shops or specialists. But the main thing is that it will contain a plan for your repair and an expense estimate. The plan should reflect all your wishes: replacing windows with plastic, false ceiling or just whitewashing, new tiles in the bathroom, wallpapering or a couple of new outlets in the kitchen. Write exactly what you want. Decided on the wallpaper - that means wallpaper, if you want decorative plaster - then so be it. Pipes are buzzing - replace, a punctured toilet - throw away. You may think that, based on your desires, do-it-yourself apartment renovation will not work quickly and inexpensively. But you probably do not know this, but only drive yourself into the framework. If it turns out - you will do it, if not - it's not a big loss, it's just a note in a notebook. Next, get down to the estimate: what exactly do you need and in what quantity. How many meters of tiles, grout, bags of putty, wallpaper, chipboard and other things. You can always correct these entries.

To find out exactly what materials, what quality and price you need, go to online stores and construction forums for help. Carefully study the characteristics and pricing policy, approximately calculate the expense. And at the same time, calculate how to replace the faucet yourself, glue wallpaper or install drywall. Determine for yourself: I can do it myself, but here you need to look for an electrician or plumbing. Write it down.

How can you save

Lots of options. To begin with, remember: it is better to buy materials for apartment renovation in the cold season - the price is much lower. Summer is the construction season. In winter, you can stumble upon a 50% discount in building markets or the “Buy 2, get 3 for free” promotion! So you can buy the same wallpaper at a low price, but with a much better look and quality. And if they lie for a couple of months in a dry pantry or closet, then nothing will happen to them. Check local forums, especially if you live in a big city. There you will surely find many people who have already done inexpensive apartment renovations with their own hands. Photos of finishes, tips, addresses and phone numbers of specialists you will surely find in the same place. And you will also stumble upon the heading “repair” and “remains of materials”. Periodically view who and what interesting sells or gives away. After repairs, people often have materials that no one will buy at the sale price, but it’s a pity to throw them away. So, you can buy a couple of bags of putty or even Spanish tiles for a ridiculous price. A person has an extra 2-3 meters left, there is nowhere to put them, and you will be fine in the toilet. There you can also find the remnants of the cable or grout “for a chocolate bar”. More impressive people, settling in new buildings, often change brand-new plumbing or PVC windows for more expensive ones, and these are given for next to nothing. Why? Because they want “Rehau” or “only France”, and such a window will do just fine for you. Everything is better than the old wooden one. When you get rich, buy yourself a Rehau.

Tools for repair

A construction tool costs a lot of money, so it’s better not to spend money on it. As an option - take it for a while, it is rented everywhere. And it will be even better if you borrow it from acquaintances, friends or relatives. And be sure to thank the person for the help. How? You better know. Take this opportunity to ask if they can help you with the decoration of the apartment. Especially if your friends are well acquainted with the building charter. It will also help to do the renovation of the apartment with your own hands quickly and inexpensively, and even with high quality. Yes, and for sure your friend will make a significant discount for the old memory.

You will need:

  • putty
  • dye
  • putty knife
  • roller
  • brush
  • container for water and putty
  • priming
  • water-based paint
  • wallpaper glue.
  • Step-by-step instruction

    1. The concept of repair includes the following list:
  • stripping ceilings and walls from old wallpaper or paint.
  • putty, primer, sanding of ceilings and walls.
  • painting the ceiling with water-based paint or wallpapering.
  • wall papering.
  • painting window frames and slopes.
  • floor repair and painting.
  • 2. So that the repair of your apartment is not delayed, remove the furniture from the room in which you start working. If this is not possible, then put it in the center of the room and cover it with foil. 3. Repair in the room, start with preparing the ceiling and walls for decoration. To do this, blur the ceiling to the plate. Wet the ceiling area with warm water, let the whitewash or water-based paint swell, then remove all the old ceiling coating with a spatula and rinse the area again. Change the water as often as possible. The durability of its coating will depend on how you washed the ceiling.

    4. The next step is to repair the ceiling. Expand all the cracks with a spatula so that they become deeper. Prime with primer, putty with putty and let dry. After the primer dries, sand the ceiling and prime it again. Repair the walls before painting the ceiling. 5. After working with the ceiling, proceed to remove the old wallpaper. To do this, wet the old wallpaper with water, let it soak for a while, and as soon as it gets wet, remove it with a spatula. The wall must be dry and clean before you start repairing it. Expand all the cracks on the wall with a spatula, prime them with primer and seal with putty. When those places that you putty dry out, sand them, and then cover them with a primer again. If you will be gluing thick wallpaper, then do not use finishing putty. 6. The next step is painting the ceiling or wallpapering the ceiling. Dilute the water-based paint as written on the can and paint the ceiling 2 times. If you decide to glue the wallpaper for painting, then glue it and paint it 2 times as well. Domestic paints are cheaper, so your budget will not suffer. 7. Before wallpapering the walls, it is necessary to paint the doors and window frames with paint. If you buy "P" paint from Russian manufacturers, and not imported ones, then it will cost you much less. After the paint has dried, proceed to wallpapering. To save money on buying wallpaper, choose a domestic manufacturer. In terms of quality and durability, wallpapers from Russian manufacturers are not inferior to imported ones. 8. The final stage is the painting of the floor. If the furniture was not taken out, then seal the legs and the perimeter of the furniture with masking adhesive tape, and remove it after painting - the furniture will remain clean. Choose domestic paint - it will come out cheaper, but it will not affect the quality of the painting.

    Walls

    Walls are the first thing that always catches your eye. Of course, everyone will like smooth walls and beautiful stylish wallpapers, but if there is no money for leveling and expensive materials, you can limit yourself to simply replacing old wallpapers. Only by re-gluing the wallpaper will you already transform the apartment. It is quite possible to pick up inexpensive dense wallpaper on a paper or non-woven base, and you can stick them even on not very even walls. Non-woven wallpaper hides small irregularities especially well.

    There is another option. The previous owners left a couple of rolls of wallpaper in the apartment, which they did not need during the renovation. For example, I just changed some particularly dirty and torn sections of the wallpaper. It was enough to replace the wallpaper strips where they suffered the most. These are protruding corners, places near the door jambs, in the hallway at the entrance, in the kitchen not far from the stove - all this will cost much less than a complete replacement, and the housing will look much better.

    Ceiling

    If we are dealing with whitewash or lime layers, it is best to clean them first. Numerous lime deposits, flaking and crumbling, are not only aesthetically ugly, but also harmful to health. Erasing lime is not difficult, you first need to soften the layers by wetting small areas of the ceiling with water from a spray bottle, and then clean off the white with a hard spatula or scraper. If there is old peeling wallpaper on the ceiling, they need to be removed.

    After stripping, the ceiling can be further sanded with ordinary sandpaper, that is, sandpaper, and primed. If the surface is smooth, without pits and cracks, it will be cheaper to paint the ceiling with acrylic paint, it is better to use matte paint in light, clean colors. If there are small defects, the wallpaper will hide them. Wallpaper for the ceiling should be chosen white or very light, without a pronounced pattern and with very fine corrugation. Another economical option to transform the ceiling is to glue foam boards.

    floors

    If these are concrete floors, as a rule, nothing further needs to be done with them in terms of preparation, they are quite even and durable. Squeaky wood floors are a much more serious problem, and repairing them, at least over time, cannot be avoided, but the creaking problem can be temporarily solved. Squeaking in wooden floors occurs when adjacent boards rub against each other. In particularly “loud” places on the floor, you can drill a few holes with a conventional drill and pour in some mounting foam. The foam will fill and seal the voids between the boards and the floor will stop creaking. This must be done carefully, without fanaticism, so that the floor does not swell.

    You can even out strong “waves” and uneven wooden floors by nailing hardboard, plywood or OSB sheets on top. For the necessary strength, the thickness of plywood or OSB should be about 1 centimeter. As a floor finish, linoleum is still the most economical and durable. Fortunately, the choice of linoleum in stores is extensive.

    Tile

    If we have already figured out the wallpaper on the walls, then what to do with the tiled floor? Replacing the tile, of course, can be a way out if the tile does not stick to the wall, because there is no other way out. In rare cases, when the tile easily moved away from the mortar, and the mortar itself adheres well to the wall, it is easy to restore the tile by smearing it with a thin layer of PVA glue and pressing it firmly into place against the mortar. Here the main thing is to get the right side of the tile into its imprint on the mortar, and the PVA glue will very firmly glue the ceramics with the mortar - checked! But if the tile is holding tight, and buying a new one is expensive, you can work a little on what you have. Tiles, firstly, can and should be thoroughly washed. Since it is a tile, it will withstand much more aggressive cleaners than dish gel, but it will also look much better when it is cleaned of limescale, rust and other traces of use. It is also necessary to clean the seams between the tiles. There is no need to be afraid to damage the grout, on the contrary, you need to clean as much grout as possible. Mold often settles between the tiles in the bathroom and it is very difficult to remove it from there.

    After removing as much grout as possible along with unwanted flora and fauna, the seams can be treated with a special antiseptic agent. After that, they can be filled with fresh grout. It is better to choose a grout color that is neutral or close to the color of the tile.

    Plumbing

    Carefully inspect plumbing fixtures. No cracks or chips? There is no need to change plumbing. Plumbing cleaners will help bring all the surfaces of sanitary ware into a more presentable look, and a bright shower curtain will complete the job. By the way, you can also freshen up a cast-iron bathtub with paint. Not from the inside, of course, but from the outside. But, shining with freshly painted sides, the bath will immediately take on a more elegant look. And if, nevertheless, the inner surface of the bathtub is damaged and worn out, it makes sense to turn to specialists in the restoration of bathtubs, who will cover the surface of the bathtub with new enamel right at home.

    As a rule, such a service is cheaper than buying and installing a new bath. And here is another option: make a bath curtain not only for the top, but also for the bottom (use glue and Velcro).

    Electrician

    Check all outlets. If you see melted plastic around the plug holes or even just dark spots, these sockets should be changed without hesitation! Fixtures are changed as needed. If they are intact, not obsolete and all the bulbs are on, it is enough just to remove them, wash them and hang them back. Do not forget to turn off the power in the apartment when working with an electrician!

    10 ways to spend less on decorating an apartment, and get a real masterpiece

    Designer tips: 1. 100% polyester silk. Stone-like tiles, parquet-like linoleum, onyx-like laminate, Trekhgorka under Ralph Lauren. Porcelain stoneware "under the python". “Artificially aged” something there ... It’s embarrassing to even think about it. Alas, the number will not pass. Look through good interior magazines. There, everywhere, stone is stone, tile is nothing but tile, and wood is exactly what wood is. If there is no money for parquet, and a simple laminate is beneath your dignity, look for a good engineering board. As a result, you will get a floor that looks much more expensive than the money spent on it. A good alternative to porcelain tiles for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways is cement tiles. The result will look more expensive a hundred times. 2. Adjacent rooms should contrast. If you have a bright living room, consider painting the entryway a deep, relatively dark color. In any case, the cost of paint will be the same, and the result may look really expensive. 3. If on good carpet no money, look for viscose or fiber blend carpeting that mimics a silk or wool pile carpet.

    4. Plant the curtains on a thick lining. Even inexpensive curtain fabric will seriously benefit from this. Look for fabrics that are three meters wide. This results in significant savings. If you are not ready to spend a lot, give up printed textiles (fabrics with a pattern). When cutting fabrics with a pattern, due to the need to properly join the fabrics, there are a lot of scraps. The more rapport, the more waste. Do not use curtain tape for curtains. Let the seamstress lay the "manual" folds. It's not that expensive, and the folds gathered on the braid look very cheap. 5. Set-headset-set. The same things in the interior are allowed only in one case: if they are paired things that form a symmetrical composition. Chandeliers, table lamps and sconces from one set, leave those to whom God did not give imagination. He also - sets of upholstered furniture "sofa-two chairs" and similar tender sadness. For more details, see the next paragraph. 6. Ready solutions. Bad news: there are none. At least for us. The shower room is built using the construction method because it is a room. Unless you run a student hostel or an underground massage parlor with a striptease, the shower stall (it's a sad structure of yellowish acrylic and skewed doors) will not work for you. Do not spend money on "designer" plumbing. Let the appearance of the sanitary equipment of the bathroom (kitchen, bathroom) be dictated by the function. Buy washbasins and faucets with simple shapes, without inappropriate decor. The toilet bowl should be invisible and cope with its duties. No one will love them, right? 7. Paintings, prints, prints, photographs and posters frame in simple but deep frames with glass and be sure to passe-partout. Even a picture printed on a home inkjet printer (or a naive children's drawing) looks very significant in such a frame. Play with the size of the passe-partout. A small work in a very wide passe-partout looks very “designer”. And, by the way, cardboard for a passe-partout can be almost any color. eight. Cosiness. Another collective fetish. According to my observations, what is called “comfort” in our Palestinians is, in 99 percent of cases, poetic crampedness. In many ways, this is a bodily memory of a bygone childhood, of a warm and affectionate meager Soviet life with carpets teeming with saprophytes, a kind grandmother, Czechoslovak crystal and Dreiser, unread by anyone, in the polished Polish wall "Hanka". The coziness will not be added by an expensive demon like a round bed with music and a minibar, a bar counter with a built-in aquarium, etc. The same is true for such rich things as a lambrequin, a garland and a swag. Do not worry: in a good, thoughtful interior, coziness inevitably comes naturally. Therefore… 9. … Farewell, gypsy Sera! Duvet covers made of coarse calico in a small Nefertiti, towels in scarlet roses, pillowcases with “stray-eye” shades, nylon blankets with Shanghai leopards. All these are attributes of collective farm chic, forgive me for being direct. They don't add comfort. Motley coloring is often necessary for these things solely to hide their exceptionally lousy quality. Let the bed linen and bath towels be plain white (options: ivory, ecru). But from excellent Egyptian cotton. 10. However, with ivory, it is also important not to overdo it. Peach, beige, sand… The average nuance range is good for chain hotels. Because their stencil interiors are bound to please everyone. Your interior should please you. After all, he is a manifestation of your essence, right? Pick up a fan-palette of any paint manufacturer. Do you feel a pleasant heaviness? These are your possibilities. Don't miss them!

    Before starting repairs in the apartment, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work. The main thing is to carefully plan each step. To get started, find out on the site the current prices for apartment renovation in order to correctly plan the budget. This will avoid unnecessary costs in time and finances in the future. Now you can move on to the work plan. The entire scope of work is conditionally divided into several stages, which must be performed strictly alternately. Let us consider in detail the stages of repair work and the rules for their implementation.

    We are planning a renovation

    The first thing to do before a major overhaul of an apartment or house is drawing up a detailed plan of your home. This scheme should indicate where the furniture, interior, household appliances will be placed. This will help you decide where to start repairs in the apartment, where to place sockets, switches, chandeliers.

    Thanks to the plan, you will be able to lay pipes and wires without complications and the first time. After all, the comfort of the room directly depends on the rationality of the placement of these elements.

    If the plans include not only cosmetic work, but a turnkey apartment renovation with redevelopment, then initially it is worth starting demolition or building walls. Next, you need to decide on the style of the future housing - will you stick to one style when decorating the entire room, or will you combine the future interior with several styles.

    People who do not have enough experience in this matter are advised to seek the advice of a professional designer. The specialist will be able to develop the best option for interior design, taking into account the features of the layout and personal wishes of the client.

    After completing the layout, proceed to the financial issue - calculate what materials and how much you will need. It is better to buy them in specialized stores.

    Give preference to well-known and proven brands, the quality of the assortment of which corresponds to their price. Savings on materials can result in additional financial costs in the future.

    Rough work

    It is necessary to start transforming the premises from the implementation of rough work. These include the dismantling of the old coating. In order for the new interior to look attractive and last for many years, the tiles, wallpaper or whitewash must be removed.

    If you do not plan to change the floor covering, it must be protected from possible damage during construction work. To do this, use a dense plastic film, the edges of which must be firmly fixed with masking tape. In the case of planned large-scale work, it is more convenient to protect the floor from mechanical damage with cardboard sheets, which are much stronger than the film.

    It is not recommended to replace windows and interior doors at the first stage of repair. After all, when dismantling and puttying, a significant layer of dirt will settle on them, which will be difficult to get rid of. Only cash withdrawals are required.

    Electrical and plumbing

    At the second stage, it is necessary to do the dirtiest, but at the same time the most important part of the work. It's about electrical and plumbing. These types of work should be taken extremely responsibly, because in order to correct mistakes, you will have to re-make a major overhaul in the apartment. For this reason, it is not recommended to save on the quality of wires and pipes. After all, it will be possible to repair them afterwards only by destroying the wall.

    Initially, a storming scheme is drawn up for each individual wall. It is recommended that these diagrams be retained even after repair, in order to avoid erroneous damage to pipes or electrical wiring with nails. Lay the wires with the required cross section, as well as pipes, into the prepared strobe, carefully seal the strobes.

    window replacement

    It's time to change the old windows. But if you are renovating an apartment in a new building, you won’t have to do this part of the work. Indeed, high-quality metal-plastic windows have already been installed in modern houses.

    In any case, window frames and glass should be protected from paint with a film or pleated paper curtains. These curtains are quite high quality and their price is not high.

    After finishing work with windows, you can begin to prepare the floor and ceiling. You need to do the following:

    • align the walls;
    • wipe seams and cracks;
    • putty.

    The building materials used for the rough phase of the repair do not have to match the base materials. But they must be of good quality.

    Surface priming

    Next, proceed to apply the primer to the walls and ceilings. Thanks to this coating, the strength of these surfaces is increased. A high-quality primer, has in its composition substances that seep into the surface, connecting its small particles. Be sure to wait until the primer is completely dry. Only after that you can start painting the ceilings.

    The next step is to level the floor. For this, a screed and a fill are made. But it will be much easier and faster to use modern specialized solutions that level themselves. After all, apartment renovation in 2018 should be done using new technologies.

    During the drying of the floor, all work is stopped. Violating this rule, you will damage its surface and the work will have to be redone.

    Wall finishing materials

    Those materials with which the walls will be finished, you choose solely at your own aesthetic and financial discretion. The most popular way of finishing is wallpaper. The range of this material is quite rich in terms of color, size, texture and material. Often they also turn to painting or decorative wall plastering.

    For fans of more daring decisions, there are other options. The only limitation of your imagination is that the materials must be in harmony with the overall interior.

    If you want to save money, you can decorate the walls of the room with the remains of several types of materials. This solution will emphasize your originality, and significantly reduce the cost of repairs.

    Floor decoration

    When the walls are already decorated, proceed to laying the floor. You can make a coating from linoleum, laminate, carpet, piece parquet, or parquet board.

    A popular solution in a modern interior is the use of floor tiles. But you can start laying it only at the end of the design of the ceiling.

    The final touches of the renovation

    This stage is the final one. Now you can start installing door frames, thresholds, baseboards and more. Assemble and install furniture, appliances, decorating interior items. After that, it remains to do the cleaning and admire the new home.

    Photos of the main stages of repair in the apartment

    1. A good mine in a bad game.

There, everywhere, a stone is a stone, and a tree is exactly what a tree is.

    2. Leave the ceiling alone.

    Everyone has become obsessed with ceilings! If you think sensibly, riveting attention to the ceiling, you only remind everyone of its existence. And according to his height. Ceilings with a height of two sixty will not turn, even if cracked, into majestic vaults melting somewhere in an unthinkable height. This cannot be, no matter what the "decorator tricks" promise you. Just accept it. Tall doorways can do a lot more for your home than a ridiculous five-layer neon-lit ceiling. Let the interior doors be two, say, twenty high. And lower the door handles a little, five to seven centimeters. Having shown a non-standard approach, you will be pleasantly surprised by the result.

    3. Choosing paint for the walls, consider the movement of color around the house.

    Neighboring . If you have a bright living room, consider painting the entryway a deep, relatively dark color. In any case, the cost of paint will be the same, and the result may look really expensive.

    4. Buy modular laminate cabinets from the store, and order the doors to them in a good carpentry workshop.

    This will give you significant savings, which, however, no one will ever notice. The same is true for kitchen equipment.

    5. If you still purchase ready-made cabinet furniture, let the veneer of the facades be dark, and the door panels - simple (rectangular).

    Remember: light wood always looks cheaper. Avoid yellowish and reddish shades of veneer. And, saving on the furniture itself, splurge on good pens!

    6. If there is no money for a good carpet, look for viscose carpet or mixed fibers, imitating a silk or wool pile carpet.

    Choose the color and texture that suits you and order a piece of the size you need. For additional small money, its edges are swept with braid.

    8. Set-headset-set. He also - sets of upholstered furniture "sofa-two chairs" and similar tender sadness. For more details, see the next paragraph.

    9. Ready-made solutions.

    Bad news: there are none. At least for us. The shower room is being built using the construction method because it is a room. The word "renovation" immediately causes negative emotions for many. This feeling is due to the fact that this is a very laborious, lengthy and costly process. Especially if the work is done independently. This article describes in detail how to start repairs in an apartment, depending on its type, what materials to choose and in what sequence to carry out the work so that the repair goes without problems, and the result exceeds all expectations.

    The stages of apartment renovation and the cost of work depends on the condition of the premises, the type of repair and the size of the area covered, i.e. it can be the entire apartment or its individual premises. There is a major, cosmetic and renovation. Each of them has its own clear sequence of actions, the correct implementation of which determines the final result and the duration of the period of operation.

    Overhaul is considered the most ambitious and time-consuming, which will require not only a lot of effort, but also significant financial costs. It involves a complete reconstruction of the apartment with a possible redevelopment, replacement of windows, doors, utilities, ceiling, wall and floor coverings. It usually starts from scratch.

    How to legalize an already done redevelopment of an apartment. How to get permission to redevelop your own home.

    Choice of interior design

    Where to start repairing a room or apartment as a whole? With the choice of style of decoration of the room. Properly selected interior design will help create a comfortable and stylish home. His choice depends on the taste, character and outlook on life of the owner of the apartment. Today, there is a variety of interior styles with distinctive features that should be studied before making repairs in order to be able to successfully bring the chosen direction to life.

    Designers divide all existing style directions into certain groups:

    • classic, which includes Provence, Empire, Baroque, English and antique style;
    • ethnic style covers Japanese, Egyptian, African, Scandinavian and Chinese directions;
    • modern style combines country, modern, classicism and minimalism.

    The most popular is the classic interior design. Splendor, grandeur, functionality, defiant aristocracy and noble grace are considered characteristic features of the direction. All elements of the interior indicate the high status of the owners of the apartment.

    The rooms are decorated in restrained pastel colors. Massive expensive furniture with carved handmade patterns becomes a visiting card. An unusual painting rises on the ceiling. Large-sized apartments are often decorated in the classical style, in which you can not save on free space.

    Modern youth prefers to decorate the room in a modern style. This is especially justified for apartments with a small area. Here everything should be simple, restrained and concise. The premises contain a minimum amount of furniture, which should be compact, mobile, functional and modern. You can dilute the calm palette of decorative interior decoration with the help of bright decor elements.

    The ethnic direction reflects the owner's predisposition to a certain culture, the main features of which are embodied in interior design. With the help of modern technologies and finishing materials, you can make your dreams come true and create an imitation of your beloved country in your apartment. This direction is chosen by non-standard-minded people with a great love for adventure and travel. You can more clearly see each style in the photo of renovated apartments.

    How to start apartment renovation: the main strategy

    After the design project of the apartment has been developed and the question has been resolved in what sequence to make repairs, you can begin to perform work, which consists of the following stages:

    • preparatory stage;
    • draft work;
    • finishing of the room.

    How to start repairing an apartment with your own hands? From the preparatory stage, which consists in the implementation of a complex of dismantling works. This applies to both new buildings and old apartments. Regardless of what kind of repair is planned, cosmetic or major, all surfaces must be cleaned of the old finish. At this time, window blocks are being dismantled with the subsequent installation of better products. The front door also needs to be replaced. Here you may need to expand or reduce the doorway. Based on the project, partitions are dismantled and erected, doorways are sealed or arranged to install interior doors or create arches.

    Useful advice! Do-it-yourself room repair should begin with the dismantling of interior doors.

    Surface preparation is one of the most important steps in DIY repairs. Where to start the process depends on the state of the foundation. This stage includes cleaning the walls, ceiling and floor from the old coating and eliminating all flaws on the surface of the structures using building materials. It is on the quality of the work at this stage that it will depend on how firmly and accurately the new finishing coating will hold.

    First of all, the ceiling is cleaned of the old coating. Whitewash is washed off with a brush dipped in water. Old putty is removed using a grinder with an iron brush.

    You can remove ordinary wallpaper from the walls with a spatula, after wetting them with water. Vinyl wallpapers are quite resistant to moisture, so you can remove them with a steam generator or ironing. If there is no such device, you can use an ordinary iron with a steam function, which is brought to the wall at a distance of 10-15 cm. Under the influence of steam, the wallpaper easily moves away from the wall. You can remove the paint using a grinder with a special nozzle or a building hair dryer. The next step is to remove the old flooring.

    Useful advice! If the project provides for the installation of a suspended or stretch ceiling, the old coating can not be removed. It is enough to treat all problem areas with a strengthening primer and an antiseptic.

    Where to start repairing an apartment with a rough finish in a new building

    Where to start finishing the apartment depends on the state of its structural elements. Usually, the developer performs the necessary minimum of work, strictly not adhering to the technology of their implementation and without using high-quality building materials. Therefore, all elements of the premises need a rough rough finish of the apartment with their own hands or with the help of specialists, which consists in performing the following activities:

    • dismantling of old and construction of new non-bearing structures based on a new layout;
    • window replacement;
    • preparation of holes in the walls for laying new engineering communications according to the developed scheme;
    • electrical wiring;
    • installation of technological communications: water supply, sewerage, heating, ventilation, air conditioner inter-unit line;
    • leveling of all concrete surfaces;
    • installation of insulation and sound insulation;
    • floor screed.

    After completing the rough repair work in the apartment, the finishing of the premises is carried out. The solution to the question of how to plan repairs at the final stage will depend on the type of finishing material and the way it is laid. For example, if the walls and ceiling are painted or wallpapered, then the finishing work starts from the ceiling, then the walls are lined and the flooring is laid. In the case of a suspended ceiling, installation work is carried out after finishing the walls.

    If parquet is being installed, then the work is carried out before finishing the walls and ceiling, so as not to damage the surface. Doors can be mounted both before and after finishing the walls. If there is no platband, then the installation of the door leaf is carried out before finishing, in order to be able to seal the joint between the wall and the door frame. In the case of a platband, the gap is filled with foam, and the platband is attached to the wall after finishing the walls.

    After completing all the finishing work, they proceed to the installation of skirting boards, sockets, switches, platbands, lighting and plumbing fixtures. Then a general cleaning is carried out, after which you can proceed to the arrangement of furniture and decor elements. It is in this sequence that repairs are carried out on their own.

    How to start repairs in a rough apartment: installation work

    The list of installation work when performing repairs from scratch includes:

    • erection of non-bearing partitions;
    • replacement of windows and doors;
    • work related to the laying of electrical wiring and other communications.

    The construction of non-bearing interior partitions is carried out on the basis of a previously developed plan. For the installation of structures, gas, foam concrete blocks, brick or metal frame with plasterboard finish can be used.

    Concrete blocks create a solid structure that can withstand a significant cantilever load. Therefore, this is the most suitable option if a TV or wall cabinet will hang on the wall. The surface needs base plaster for further decorative finishing.

    Much less often, partitions are erected from building bricks. This is due to the fact that the design occupies a significant part of the free space. Indeed, in order for it to be stable, the thickness of the partition must be at least 170 mm. In addition, this design creates a significant load on the base.

    The most popular option is to create a partition from a metal frame, which is sheathed with drywall. The design has good sound insulation and does not create a significant load on the supporting element of the building.

    Useful advice! In plasterboard partitions, it is necessary to provide for the installation of embedded parts that will withstand the load from possible hinged structures. .

    The installation of windows and entrance doors should be entrusted to specialized organizations, the quality of which will determine the nature of the protection of the apartment from the cold and the likelihood of penetration of burglars.

    Features of installation of communications

    How to start do-it-yourself repairs after redevelopment of an apartment? With the implementation of electrical wiring and laying of other engineering communications. First you need to do all the plumbing work. New radiators are being installed, and pipelines are being connected to the common house heating system. Pipework is being carried out to connect faucets, a toilet bowl, a washing machine, a sink, a bathtub, a shower cubicle, a water heater and a dishwasher. Before installation, you should clearly know the location and connection features of all devices.

    Hot and cold water pipes can be hidden in wall niches or mounted in plasterboard or plastic boxes. As a material for pipes, it is recommended to use polypropylene, which has high strength and performance characteristics.

    Useful advice! The size of the holes for laying plumbing communications should be twice as large as the diameter of the pipelines, which is associated with a high value of the coefficient of thermal expansion of the material.

    Wiring is usually hidden. All cables and wires are laid in wall strobes, above a suspended or stretch ceiling, or in the floor under a screed.

    Important! When repairing panel apartments, wall chasing for future electrical wiring is carried out only vertically. Horizontal sections are mounted at the junction of the wall and floor or under the ceiling.

    Work must begin with the markup, which is carried out on the basis of the developed plan of the apartment. According to this marking, wall chasing is performed. The size of the holes is determined by the number and thickness of the cables to be laid. In new buildings, all electrical wiring is installed from scratch, starting from the electrical panel. In old apartments, when performing a major overhaul, you can also completely change the electrical cables, or mount its individual sections necessary for connecting electrical appliances based on a new design project.

    At this stage, it is necessary to provide for the laying of cables for the intercom, TV, telephone and Internet, which can also be hidden.

    How does ceiling repair begin in an apartment?

    How to start repairing a rough apartment? All repairs in the apartment are usually carried out from top to bottom. So, you need to start from the ceiling. In new buildings, it is presented in the form of a monolithic concrete slab, the surface of which must be cleaned, plastered, primed and lined with decorative trim. If the repair is carried out in an old apartment, then at the first stage the surface should be cleaned of the old finishing material.

    The further plan of action depends on the chosen design option for the ceiling. If the surface is perfectly flat, then the easiest and cheapest option is to whitewash or paint it. If the base requires preliminary elimination of defects using plastering, then this option will be very laborious and costly.

    Another budget, but not so time-consuming option is the installation of ceiling tiles, which even a beginner can perform. The surface of the base does not need to be pre-levelled. The main thing is to choose the right quality finishing material and glue.

    A more acceptable, but expensive solution is to create a hinged drywall structure, which can be of any shape and have several levels, which determines the cost and time of work. Thanks to this solution, it is possible to obtain free space between the ceiling and the structure for laying and installing spotlights.

    A modern solution today is the creation of a stretch ceiling made of PVC fabric. The result is a perfectly even base of any texture and shade. Installation is carried out in a matter of hours by a specialized team. Before performing work, you must first prepare wall structures. Because the installation process of a stretch ceiling involves the execution of edging from baguettes. In addition, all dirty work must be completed in the room so that dust and possible pollution do not settle on a clean ceiling.

    Finishing of wall structures

    Alignment of the walls is an important event, the quality of which depends on the durability and aesthetic appearance of the future decorative finish. Usually, when repairing apartments with a rough finish, they encounter fairly even concrete walls that need only slight adjustments with the help of plaster mixtures. However, if the walls are made of expanded clay blocks, gas silicate or brick, rather laborious and costly work is required to level them.

    Before proceeding with the alignment of the walls, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the surface of the old coating. This is a mandatory step for the overhaul of old apartments. All detected cracks or other defects need to be sealed. To do this, problem areas must be embroidered, primed and sealed with cement mortar, putty or sealant. Wide gaps and cracks in the corners can be filled with polyurethane foam.

    Wall alignment can be done in two ways:

    • plastering walls with building mixtures;
    • wall decoration GKL and GVL sheets.

    The first option involves the use of plaster mixtures based on gypsum or cement. If the wall has minor irregularities, visual alignment is performed using the building level. If the surface has a significant difference, then it is advisable to carry out the alignment according to the beacons. This is especially important when the walls will be painted. When installing furniture along a flat wall, the likelihood of cracks is eliminated.

    Together with the alignment of wall surfaces, it is necessary to finish the door and window openings. To do this, you can use plaster, drywall or plastic panels.

    The second option is preferable when the walls are made of brick or have significant irregularities. The use of plaster is unreasonably costly and time-consuming. GKL or GVK sheets are mounted on a previously installed metal frame. As a result of such a finish, a gap is formed between the wall and the cladding, in which various communications can be hidden. This process is characterized by the absence of dirty work and low labor intensity. The walls do not need further plastering before finishing with decorative material.

    The main disadvantage of this design is its fragility. Therefore, if hanging furniture or appliances will subsequently be located on the surface, you should take care of the embedded parts that are mounted before performing the leveling layer.

    Where does floor repair begin?

    The apartment begins with the implementation of the screed, which is used to eliminate significant damage and irregularities in the base relative to the horizon. This is done by backfilling or pouring the floor with a special composition, which forms a perfectly flat surface, necessary for further laying of the floor covering. In addition, the screed serves to strengthen the surface of the concrete slab and increase its strength characteristics. Before its implementation, it is necessary to create a sound and heat insulating layer. For this, expanded clay is often used, which is laid with a thickness of at least 5 cm. Due to the leveling layer, you can raise the floor level or make a technological slope.

    Useful advice! In the bathroom, it is advisable to set a certain slope of the floor for water flow in the event of a flood, which will prevent the entire apartment from being flooded.

    Floor screed can be:

    • concrete;
    • cement-sand;
    • self-levelling;
    • dry;
    • semi-dry.

    The traditional way to correct the floor surface is the use of concrete or cement-sand mortars, which are advisable to use to eliminate significant irregularities and damage to the surface. They are used in the installation of heat and sound insulation.

    The most practical and modern solution is the use of self-levelling compounds, consisting of two mixture options: leveling and leveling. The first is used to eliminate significant irregularities in the base, the second is a finishing layer that creates a flat and smooth surface without defects.

    However, despite the less laborious process when using these compositions, their cost significantly exceeds traditional mixtures. Therefore, it is advisable to use self-leveling compounds when the height difference relative to the horizon does not exceed 4 cm.

    A semi-dry or dry version is used to level the base when the height difference reaches more than 3-5 cm. This is a good alternative to traditional compounds, however, the new layer will create much less pressure on the concrete slab. Therefore, this method is recommended when repairing apartments in old houses and for laying carpet and laminate.

    Floor screed procedure

    First you need to prepare the base of the floor. To do this, the old floor structure is opened with the dismantling of skirting boards, flooring and the old screed. Next, the surface is cleaned of construction debris and dust. In case of detection of cracks, potholes and chips, it is necessary to carry out repair work using sealing mixtures. To eliminate deep damage, the jointing method is used, which consists in making cuts perpendicular to the crack with a depth of 20 mm and a thickness of 5 mm. Further, all damage must be repaired with concrete mortar.

    Leveling the floor begins with its marking, namely the determination of the lowest and highest points relative to the horizon. A level is indicated on the walls, which indicates the thickness of the future fill layer. Based on the markup, beacons and guides are installed. Pouring the mixture starts from the far corner of the room. The solution is distributed and leveled using a metal rule.

    The concrete screed should dry for three weeks. After 24-30 hours after completion of work, the surface must be moistened once a day.

    Useful advice! In order to obtain a solid and high-quality foundation, it is not recommended to disturb the natural process of moisture evaporation with the help of heating devices and ventilation of the room.

    Similarly, the floor surface is leveled with a semi-dry mortar, which is evenly distributed and compacted with a conventional shovel. After complete drying, the surface must be treated with a wooden grout. The process is carried out until the floor surface is perfectly flat.

    Dry screed involves laying a layer of expanded clay with a fraction of 1-5 mm, on top of which gypsum fiber boards are mounted. They are interconnected using self-tapping screws with smearing the end edges with special glue. This is the easiest way to level the floor, which allows you to get a coating of increased strength. After the floor screed is completed, you can proceed with the installation of the selected floor covering.

    Turnkey apartment renovation. Price per square meter

    Regardless of what kind of renovation is planned in the apartment, you can do it yourself or use the services of professionals. You can also involve specialists to perform specific types or stages of work in the entire apartment or in a specific room.

    The cost of cosmetic repairs includes the following list of works:

    • dismantling of the old finish from the elements of the room;
    • painting or whitewashing the ceiling;
    • partial alignment of the walls;
    • sticking non-woven or paper wallpaper;
    • laying flooring;
    • partial replacement of electrical and plumbing;
    • laying tiles.

    The cost of such a list of works starts from 2500 rubles / m², which depends on the complexity of the process. Repair will cost 85 thousand rubles, two-room - 110 thousand rubles, three-room - 120 thousand rubles. This is all without taking into account the cost of materials.

    If it is necessary to perform draft work, which includes the installation and dismantling of wall structures, the alignment of all elements of the room and electrical work, the price for services is an average of 3500-4000 rubles / m².

    When it is necessary to perform all turnkey electrical work in a new building, the price of work will be 25 thousand rubles for a one-room apartment, 35 thousand rubles for a two-room apartment, and 45 thousand rubles for a three-room apartment.

    The cost of a turnkey overhaul is an average of 5500 rubles / m². It all depends on the condition of the apartment and the total area of \u200b\u200bthe room. Many experts offer premium repairs, which include the development of an individual design project. The price of such a repair is about 7500 rubles / m².

    Turnkey apartment renovation price with materials

    The cost of repair work, taking into account materials, depends on many factors: the area of \u200b\u200bthe apartment, its current state (new or second-hand housing), the volume and complexity of the stages of work and the quality of the building materials used. You can roughly calculate the cost of repairs using an online calculator, which is located on specialized sites. It takes into account the average cost of repairing an apartment per square meter. More accurate information can be obtained only after drawing up an estimate in each individual case.

    So, the cost of budgetary repair of an apartment in a new building with materials will cost an average of 6-6.5 thousand rubles / m². If more expensive building materials are used to repair an apartment, the price of the work will be about 11-12 thousand rubles / m². Those who want to decorate their homes with exclusive finishing products must prepare at least 20 thousand rubles / m². The repair price of secondary housing will be 10-15% lower, which is determined by the condition of the apartment.

    Also, the cost of repairs with materials is affected by the functional purpose of the premises. So repairing a living room will cost 6,000 rubles / m², a corridor - 6,500 rubles / m², a kitchen - 8,500 rubles / m², a bathroom - 8,000 rubles / m², a loggia or balcony - 5,000 rubles / m².

    When deciding where to start repairs in a house or apartment, it is necessary to study each process in detail. Especially when it comes to do-it-yourself work. If you are not confident in your own abilities, it is better to entrust the execution of all work or a specific stage to professionals who will offer a clear apartment renovation plan. As a result, the work will be performed qualitatively and in a short time.

    Do-it-yourself apartment renovation. Video plot

    4 years after the end of the repair, when passions subsided, strength and nerve cells were restored, I can calmly show and tell about my personal experience of repairing my apartment.

    The renovation was started in October 2008, we moved in at the end of December 2008 with one unrepaired room, moved in without installed doors and without ceilings. The repair was completed within a year, and completed.

    We didn’t have a designer, we came up with everything ourselves, and did the repairs ourselves (they hired them for several jobs that they themselves couldn’t), although they weren’t builders by profession.
    Brick-block-panel 17-storey building of the BS-17 series. Two-room apartment, 59 square meters without balconies, separate bathroom, all walls are load-bearing, two balconies. On the picture number 2.

    Designers were not invited, they came up with everything themselves. And although in general they did it quite thoughtfully, some mistakes could not be avoided. For example, we wanted to supply an entrance door from the NEMAN company, with a good protection class, for 55 rubles of the Russian Federation (at 2008 prices), but its manufacture and installation took a month. We could not wait a month, because we just took a vacation to make repairs. The door to the apartment was just cardboard, did not close, it was impossible to leave building materials, and we quickly ordered a simple metal door in 3 days, with the usual black leatherette, for 9 thousand, temporarily. So she stayed with us. Everything temporary often becomes permanent.

    Of the mistakes, I can definitely name the choice of an acrylic bathtub with a jacuzzi. Jacuzzi is evil for the hostess. It is problematic to keep the system of tubes clean, in which water stagnates, in which dirt and microbes collect. Take a bath with a jacuzzi - please, just first spend half an hour washing the system with bleach or Domestos, then rinsing, washing. So much water, so much time. No, I will NEVER buy a hot tub again. And the bathtub is just a simple cast iron one.

    Of our correct decisions, I can note a well-planned and well-thought-out system of electrics and plumbing. I had to change all the windows and batteries in the house, the windows that were originally installed were purged, the batteries did not heat well. Over time, all the neighbors came to the same conclusion, and almost all the batteries and windows in the house were changed. We thought over the places for air conditioners in advance, made the wiring. We installed air conditioners in the autumn of 2009, and in the summer of 2010, in the very heat and fires, we were very happy.

    Stretch ceilings, French production, in the kitchen and toilet are glossy white, in other places - matte white. 33 class laminate on the floor, tiles in the kitchen, tiles in the bathroom and toilet. Under the tiles we have underfloor heating. Yes, warm floors are great, they appreciated it when a small child appeared.

    The work was done by my husband and my father. They are both jacks of all trades. We did the electrical and plumbing ourselves. The electrical acceptance inspector praised the quality very much. The batteries were digested for us by Armen, a local plumber. The walls were leveled and plastered by two Tajiks, Gena and Sasha :) By the way, I also had a moment with them, just "Our Russia" in real life. The ceilings were stretched for us by the guys from the company.

    We didn't have any problems with suppliers. They brought and installed windows on time (and they ordered not immediately, but in parts, there was not enough money), at the agreed time and on the dates we needed, they brought and stretched the ceilings. Everything was normal with the Tajik workers. By the way, I will call them to plaster again for a new apartment, it was these Gena and Sasha who made excellent plaster for us, and, having a poor command of Russian, Gena clearly explained to me that we must follow the technology and let the walls dry, otherwise "it will be bad, the owner."
    We have combined the loggia with the kitchen. I agreed on the redevelopment project before the start of the repair. All calculations were made, the project included calculations of the thickness and materials for insulation, and now we have no problems with the dew point and other things. The house provides for a single glazing of the loggias, and it was done. There is no gas in the house, only electricity. The wall between the loggia and the kitchen was made of foam blocks, it did not reach the ceiling by 2 cm, the gap was foamed and plastered. Therefore, the wall was completely demolished. It turned out a kuzhnya of about 15 sq.m. instead of 9 sq.m. We had to move the battery, turned it towards the loggia. They insulated the loggia, put a warm floor in the loggia area, and a warm floor in the kitchen area. They hung an extra electric battery just in case. It worked out well. Warm, light, and spacious.
    Wallpaper was hung in the bedroom and living room. The rest was painted. The furniture was taken from IKEA. The kitchen is parallel.
    They put "Bamboo" tiles in the bathroom, I saw other options on the site.
    The next renovation in our new apartment we will do according to the design project. I'm already preparing a technical task. I came to the conclusion that saving on a designer leads to an extra headache, to extra costs later, after the repair, when you start to arrange the furniture; without a design project, it is difficult to navigate in a building materials store. In fact, the work of the designer has to be done by himself. Only, as a non-professional, it is much more difficult. You can argue a lot about who designers are and who is a professional and who is an amateur, but personally I will focus on my instinct. I care about the result. Asking designers for free advice is simply unscrupulous or a desire to ride for free, because people work, they need to feed their families. I will order a project, and I really want something in the Russian style or with a stylization of the Russian style, however, I don’t know how to do this, because I haven’t seen such projects from anyone yet.

    The photos were not taken for magazines, in an ordinary residential setting, if someone is offended, I'm sorry.

    Start of repair: rough work. Chasing, electrical, screed, plumbing. The wiring was run through the ceiling. In case something needs to be replaced, we will remove the stretch ceiling and replace it. Neighbors put wiring tightly into the floor screed, in our opinion, it was risky, especially since for the first two years we had voltage surges from 110V to 330V in our sockets, we measured them ourselves. Then we saw that the corrugations, in which the wires were laid on the floor, during the repair were simply broken by the feet of the workers, and they poured not the wires in the corrugation, but simply the wires in the broken corrugation. Due to power surges, our microwave burned out, the neighbors' refrigerators and TVs were on fire. Some neighbors saved on electricity, installed Russian automatic machines that burned down a month after moving in, and were without electricity for a month. We did not save, we paid immediately for expensive machines and have not regretted it yet.

    In the photo there is a toilet, we made waterproofing, a toilet bowl for installation, installation under the sink, the structures for drywall are already ready.

    Cardboard labels were put on the wires so as not to get confused.

    Even if there is no money for air conditioning, I strongly recommend that you prepare strobes in advance and run wires. Then it will be dirty and expensive.

    It took us 1 week of almost continuous work and about a dozen diamond discs to gouge the walls, since the walls were just furious, not to tear through.

    This is what the apartment looked like at the beginning of the renovation.

    We bought a 50 liter boiler and for the first year we actually lived with it, there was no hot water.
    Plumbing done even with a margin. Faced with the problem of rusty water (a lot of iron). If they were doing it now, they would immediately plan convenient hatches for large filters.

    Kitchen with already demolished wall. The redevelopment has been agreed.

    Kitchen before the demolition of the wall. I offered to take out only the window and the door, but my husband turned out to be more radical - they took out the entire wall.

    Hall.

    Hallway. View from the bedroom.

    The husband assembled such a design for plumbing and hung it in the toilet, behind a large hatch. The photo shows the finished piece. Then polypropylene pipes were brought to it from various consumers (baths, sinks, washing machines).

    The bedroom stood without repair for about a year, just closed with polyethylene.

    View of the hallway from the hall. The front door is cardboard, on the wall there is a temporary shield for 2 sockets (the entrance of the electrician to the apartment).

    Hallway. The space was expanded with mirrors.

    Kitchen. View from the hallway. To the right of the entrance is a large refrigerator and freezer and storage cabinets.

    Kitchen. Working surface. The walls are painted with paint for kitchens and baths, color "Sultan". 4 years the paint apron lasts. The husband promised that if it was really needed, he would lay out a tile apron for me. Doesn't post yet because it's not necessary.
    Another photo of the kitchen in 2013. The usual working environment, we have a warm floor, for drawing on the floor I spread an oilcloth and give out paints to a child. We bought a couple of floral black and white chairs, hung a couple of African themed paintings, and laid down some oilcloth in cheerful colors. Two bears usually sit on the sofa, red and white (in the photo they are lying around).

    The furniture was put on restraints because of a small child.

    As I wrote, the kitchen is parallel. Now I see that fridge magnets and sacks spoil the look. I'll try to solve this problem. It's good to look at yourself from the outside. On the refrigerator and freezer, under the cabinets, there are children's paints, paper, pencils, plasticine, in general, what children need every day. The place was chosen historically, as it happened during the operation of the apartment and took root. It doesn't look very good, we should think about several boxes.

    Hall. Sofa from IKEA. This is what the room looked like at the start.

    Hall. We already live as a family. Zambaito Marazzi wallpaper.

    Bedroom. There is a repair.

    Bedroom. The balconies are also undergoing renovations. The loggia was sheathed with plastic panels.

    And we completely carried out this wall in the kitchen. Around the perimeter.

    View from the entrance to the hallway to the hallway, part of the hall is visible. The walls were immediately prepared for paint. Sea wave paint, taken in Leroy Merlin. When painting, at first there was a terrible dark blue glossy color, the neighbor looked in and was horrified, we were also scared, but the paint dried up and acquired a noble matte blue color. Very refreshing when you step out into the hallway. Over time, I put light green pots with flowers on the chest of drawers, it turned out fresh.

    Bedroom. Here is the usual wallpaper with a floral pattern, golden hues. I ordered the curtain in the salon according to my sketch and dimensions. I bought a thin curtain in Leroy Merlin and sewed it myself.

    Bedroom. IKEA wardrobe.

    Toilet. There are no tiles on the walls, as you can see. The walls are painted. Underfloor heating under tile "Bamboo".

    I have several problems in the bathroom. Firstly, the rim between the bathroom and the wall began to move away. You can see it in the photo. We don’t know what to close it now, they did it honestly, very carefully. Secondly, it will be necessary to photograph a few imperfections that we simply do not know how to repair. Put a piece of broken tile in a hard-to-reach place, but it is also in plain sight, near the sink in the bathroom. And there is a gap, about 10 cm, between the tub and the wall near the end of the tub. There, too, the husband broke his head, did not know what to do.
    I add new photos at the request of the participants.
    Bathroom. We don't know how to close the gap between the wall and the bathroom now.

    I specially took a photo with hanging clothes, so that it was clear that drying above the bathroom is a very convenient thing.
    To the right of the entrance to the bathroom is a closet with a roll-out drawer for dirty linen. We store all household chemicals in the closet.
