Christmas is the GREATEST holiday, established in honor of the birth in the flesh of Jesus Christ from the Virgin Mary. In Orthodox churches, a Christmas service is performed on the night of January 6-7.

The Divine Infant was born in a stable, in the suburbs of the small town of Bethlehem (although now there are suggestions by some historians that it was Nazareth).

The first guests of the baby were simple shepherds, to whom the Angel announced the Nativity of Christ:

"I proclaim to you great joy that will be to all people: for today was born to you in the city of David, the Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And here is a sign for you: you will find the Infant in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger"(Luke 2:10-12).

The magi (ancient sages) also went to the place of birth, to whom the bright Star of Bethlehem pointed the way. Magi - Belshazzar, Gaspard, Melchior - brought gold, frankincense and myrrh as a gift to the Divine Infant. Frankincense is an expensive aromatic resin of a special tree, which was offered as a sign of special reverence. The dead were anointed with myrrh, expensive fragrant oil.

So, gold is for the King, frankincense is for God, myrrh is for Man.

The Mother of God carefully kept the gifts of the Magi all her life and, before Her Dormition, transferred them to the Jerusalem Church, where they were kept until the year 400. After that, the gifts were transported to different cities, and in 1453 the Serbian Empress Maria transported them to Athos to the monastery of St. Paul, where they are kept to this day - 28 small plates of various shapes with filigree ornaments and about 70 small, olive-sized balls of incense and humble.

From the gifts to this day comes an amazing fragrance. They are sometimes taken out of the sacristy to be worshiped by pilgrims. The monks noticed that they help to heal when possessed by unclean spirits.
