Sliding interior doors in the wall: where do the doors "hide"?

It makes no sense to consider in detail the method of installing sliding doors, the leaf of which moves from the outside along the wall. Everything is obvious here. But the device of the door-pencil cases is not clear to everyone. Manufacturers claim that such a sash “leaves” directly into the wall, but if we are talking about a reinforced concrete slab or brickwork, interior sliding doors cannot leave the wall! Special tools are required to install the door-pencil cases.

There are two main installation options

Frame wall with a special opening

This is the option of the most prudent home owners who have designed the installation of sliding doors at the construction or renovation stage. In this case, where the pencil case should be installed, a frame is mounted, which is covered with sheet or panel material. Most often, drywall is used for this.

In this case, the question of how to install interior doors in the wall is decided depending on many factors.

If the wall is not load-bearing and its complete or partial dismantling is not dangerous, we replace the entire wall or opening with adjacent parts with a frame structure so as to ensure complete concealment of the canvas in the niche.

If the wall is load-bearing, the only way to “hide” the door is to mount an additional false plasterboard structure parallel to the base one and place the cassette in the resulting pocket. This will increase the thickness of the wall, but the “growth” still saves space compared to conventional swing structures.

There is an opinion that it is better to make interior compartment doors in the wall double-leaf, since in most cases false surfaces are still equipped on both sides of the opening for symmetry.

What is a cassette?

The best answer to this question was given on one of the construction sites, comparing the door-cassette system with a conventional video cassette. Indeed, ready-made interior doors in the wall are hidden in much the same way. Technically, the cassette is a frame structure made of metal (steel, aluminum), equipped with a set of guides. The use of a cassette minimizes the risk of distortions, makes it convenient to install sliding systems.

The type of cassette is chosen depending on the design of the wall in which it will be mounted:

for a brick partition, a lattice frame made of galvanized wire is used,

for plasterboard walls, cassettes are used, equipped with additional pockets for fixing.

With any niche design, sliding interior doors move along the wall in the same way as canvases “rolling” from the outside.

The main feature of such compartment doors is not that the canvas is hidden from the eyes, there is no particular need for this, since modern products are beautiful and can be an interior decoration in themselves. The main thing is that if there is a pocket, the section of the wall along which the canvas moves becomes free. You can hang a shelf, a picture on it, move furniture or any piece of furniture close to the surface.
