Beginners have many questions and, as a result, difficulties in the restoration process, which plunge them into a stupor. Of course, any alteration and restoration kitchen furniture may not lead to the result that was originally planned. However, here it should be remembered that it is never too late to get rid of the old table and buy a new one, but it is still worth a try.

Make a restoration kitchen table with your own hands or you can update it in the following ways.

  1. Painting through tulle involves painting the product with paint according to the principle of a stencil. To do this, the fabric is spread on the table in such a way that there are no tubercles. Next, you need to use spray paint to paint over the entire surface and let it dry, then remove the tulle. As a result, a beautiful lace pattern is formed on the table.
  2. Alteration of the table may consist in restoration with the help of ceramic tiles. Such a coating is not only attractive, but also practical, as it withstands various kinds of impacts. It can be whole blocks or multi-colored fragments in the form of a mosaic. If there is no tile, glass fragments can be used as a material for restoration.
  3. You can update the old table with a self-adhesive film. Modern manufacturers offer inexpensive models with original drawings. For restoration, it is enough to glue the surface of the product - and it will change before our eyes.
  4. If the table is made of solid wood, you can use the burning technique as an idea for restoration, but this requires certain work skills, as well as special equipment in the form of an electric burner.
  5. Decoupage is a very fashionable way to transform furniture and give it a completely different look. This does not require special artistic skills, because ready-made photos on paper or a napkin, which are attached to the table, are taken as the basis.

Product restoration

Restoration of the countertop involves returning to its original appearance without visible changes in the design. Many private masters and firms offer their restoration services, but due to the high cost, this option is not available to everyone. The restoration process is long and painstaking, however, if you wish, you can update the kitchen table with your own hands at home. Before you repair the countertop, you need to prepare the following materials:

  • goggles, respirator, gloves;
  • grinder or sandpaper of coarse and fine grain;
  • art or paint brush, roller;
  • impregnation and putty for wood;
  • wood glue, liquid nails;
  • acrylic or alkyd paint, stain, countertop varnish or wax;
  • antiseptic and primer.

When necessary tools at hand, you can get to work.

preliminary repair

Before covering the wooden tabletop, you should pay attention to the underframe and the general condition of the table: are the legs loosened, are some parts missing. The new life of an old table begins first of all with the elimination of these defects, since the functional component is important for any furniture. It must be disassembled, the old coating removed from each part, sanded and assembled back, fixed with glue or liquid nails. Many restorers insist that the integrity of the table should not be violated, as it will quickly become unusable.

Here each case is individual. For flimsy designs, assembly can really be fatal. The puncher may destroy the surface or it may be chipped. If the furniture is solid and massive, then you should not be afraid of this. With proper assembly, the product will become more durable and stable. After work, it is important to ventilate the room, as the accumulated dust can later settle on the countertop of the kitchen table. Dust adhering to the surface after painting will spoil the appearance, so general cleaning will not hurt.

Primary processing

A wooden table, like chipboard countertops, needs to be impregnated with an antiseptic, which will protect against pests and fungi. This substance will not allow woodworms to attack the product in the future. After processing, the table is recommended to be left to dry for at least a day. Next, you need to remove the old coating with a grinder. You can also use coarse-grained sandpaper at the beginning and fine-grained sandpaper at the end of grinding.

Kitchen worktop restoration

Before covering a wooden countertop, you should carefully inspect the surface for damage and chips. Small cracks up to 3 mm are sealed with putty, and then polished again so that there are no tubercles. Large chips can be repaired with veneer. It is necessary to pre-make a stencil right size. In order to make it correctly, you should cover the surface of the chipped part of the table with paint, then press it with paper. A clean, unpainted spot is the necessary stencil. Next, you need to cut the veneer along the contour and glue it to the surface with wood glue. Pressing the part tightly, leave to dry for 10-12 hours. How to cover the countertop after cosmetic repairs? Alkyd or shellac primer for wood. This will ensure even paint coverage. The primer should be applied in 2 coats and allowed to dry completely after each treatment. After that, the surface can be sanded again.

Table painting

Now you can proceed directly to painting. Since the restoration requires the restoration of the original appearance, you should choose the right shade. Modern manufacturers offer a wide range of color palettes, but it is not always possible to find an absolutely identical version that was used before restoration. You can purchase several types of paints, mix them and come to the desired color. How to cover a wooden tabletop so that it lasts for many more years? There are a lot of options here, but the most common is water-dispersion acrylic paint. It is non-toxic, dries quickly and is quite moisture resistant.

Using a brush, apply a thin layer, leave to dry, then cover with a second one - and also allow to dry. For dark shades, it is recommended to repeat the procedure three times. If the table will stand on the street, care must be taken to protect the surface from moisture and precipitation. This is where alkyd paint comes in handy. Despite the pungent toxic smell, it is successfully used for exterior finish. It is moisture resistant and is not afraid of direct sunlight. The most budget option is oil paint based on drying oil. This material is suitable for restoring coffee table tops that are not actively exposed to mechanical stress. Please note that after dyeing, the product will be ready for further processing after 3-4 days.

Protective covering

How to cover wooden countertops in the kitchen for long-term use? Best with matte water-based polyurethane varnish. It will provide reliable protection against external influences and damage. The varnish is applied in 2-3 layers in one direction, after each it is necessary to dry the surface for 4 hours and sand it. How to varnish a countertop so that there are no waves? It is necessary to wait for complete drying, and clean the small points with sandpaper. At the cleaning site, it may form White spot, however, this should not be scared, because after polishing the surface will become perfectly smooth.

Polish should be selected according to characteristics similar to the previous varnish. After the procedure, you can cover the countertop with wax. These are special wax sheets with a pleasant natural aroma. Before work, it should be softened (you can warm it up a little or leave it in the sun), and then rub it in in a circular motion with a felt. This process is long and painstaking, but it should be given Special attention, because the further service life and the presentable appearance of the product depend on the quality of the coating.

There is another option than to cover a wooden tabletop - this is ordinary wax, which is rubbed into the surface with a cotton cloth. Such a polished table looks very stylish and sophisticated, but is more suitable for the living room than for the kitchen.

This is how it works Long procces restoration. A little patience, diligence and creative creativity - and old item The interior will look like a photo from a glamor magazine.

At the same time, it has a smooth surface that is easy to clean and which simply cannot be damaged or deformed in any way.

The very process of applying self-adhesive film is very simple - there is no need to prepare furniture before that. You simply separate the film from the paper and apply it to your table, gently pressing it against the surface.

The table does not even have to dry. It will immediately be ready for use in an already updated form.

Paint and stencils

If you're ready to go a little further than sticking a self-adhesive film on your piece of furniture, armed with paints and a brush, you can appear as a graphic designer.

The most important thing is to come up with a plot for your table. Think about what you would like to depict on it? It can be anything you wish. If you have the makings of an artist, you can start painting right away, with or without a sketch.

Note! Wall panels PVC - which one to choose? Photo review best ideas for the interior!

But if you are “on you” with art, do not despair! Stencils will come to the rescue. You can purchase a stencil at an office supply store or make your own.

To do this, it is enough to cut out a drawing from a magazine and use it as a kind of template, according to which this drawing will be transferred to your furniture.

Or draw any of the objects you like with a pencil on a sheet of paper, cut it out and, putting it on the table, paint over the gap of the cut out stencil with paint. After removing the stencil, you will see the drawing on the table.

If this method seems difficult to you, you can seek the help of a professional artist, for whom this type of work will not be difficult.

True, the services of the artist will need to be paid for and this method can no longer be called budgetary.

As for the paint that should be used, it must be moisture resistant. Most the best option considered acrylic paint. It is odorless and dries very quickly.

In addition, acrylic does not fade in the sun, is resistant to water and high humidity generally.

We can safely say that a table covered with acrylic paint will last you a century, and this will not be an exaggeration.

Decoupage

There is another way to decorate the table, which is very similar to using stencils. This method is simply called decoupage. What is it?

Any fragments of drawings from magazines, napkins, various albums are taken. It can even be photos from your personal archive or just pictures you like from the Internet.

In general, anything. You cut out the elements you are interested in and put them on the countertop. First, see if it looks nice. If you like the option and you are ready to decorate the table with these fragments, then you can get to work.

A piece of furniture must be carefully sanded, removed paint or get rid of the lacquer coating. The surface of the table must be clean, dry and perfectly flat. In general, it should return to its original appearance.

After that, you take pre-prepared elements or photographs, cover the back with PVA glue and put them on the countertop.

Such manipulations must be done with each photo. After that, you should cover all the superimposed pictures with varnish.

The varnish will prevent your table from unwanted damage, scratches and other kinds of deformations. Your photos (decoupage) will be under reliable protection. At the same time, table decoration will not only update it, but will also delight your eyes!

If some element cannot be attached the first time, it must be immediately wiped off with a sponge moistened with warm water and try again with a similar fragment.

The dried decoupage is covered with a transparent varnish for furniture in several layers, otherwise the paper decor will quickly be erased.

4. Craquelure

Craquelure is a crackling lacquer that is deliberately given a look that mimics the texture of antique paintings. It can be one-step (the composition is applied in one layer and cracks as it dries) and two-step (two mixtures are used - one based on epoxy resins, the second - water-based, they interact and a characteristic texture is obtained). The color of the veins is determined by the bottom layer of acrylic paint, as well as the shade of the grout. Most often, powdered golden pigment or pastel is used for this purpose.

Two-step craquelure is usually complemented with decoupage or hand painting to achieve the effect of an aged painting. One-step is more suitable for products without patterns.

How to update an old table: 10 ways to restore and step-by-step instruction to action

To this day, in many houses, Soviet coffee, dining and writing tables have been preserved. The design itself is made soundly and with high quality, but the years have not spared the appearance. Let's look at 10 ways to restore such furniture at home, and craftsmen will receive a master class on restoring tables with their own hands.

How to update the table with your own hands - 10 ways

In fact, update methods old furniture much more, but we have chosen 10 options that a home master can easily master.

Method number 1: painting

Painting is deservedly considered the simplest and most affordable way of home restoration, for example, even a child can take a brush and paint a countertop, but we will talk about the technical side of the process later, but now we will try to choose the right paint.

What paint to choose?

Illustrations Recommendations

oily

Oil paints have been used to paint wood for over 100 years. You get a strong and durable coating for reasonable money. Most formulations give a glossy sheen.

But oil paint does not let air through and burns out in the sun over time, plus it can dry up to 2 days and all this time it will exude a pungent odor.

Acrylic

Acrylic paints are now breaking records of popularity. They are water-dispersed compositions based on acrylic resins.

These compositions are odorless, dry quickly enough and are absolutely harmless to the environment. In addition, acrylic is not afraid of ultraviolet rays and has excellent vapor permeability.

In fact, the only negative is the relatively high price.

Alkyd

Alkyd paints have high film strength and provide a water-repellent effect. The price of the compositions is acceptable.

But the alkyd coating has low abrasion resistance, so these compounds are not suitable for countertops in the kitchen, but a bedside table or a small coffee table in the living room will serve for a long time.

Alkyd paints are applied only to dry wood (up to 12% moisture), otherwise the coating will peel off.

Enamels for wooden surfaces

Enamel is not a type of paint, but rather a separate direction. There are acrylic enamels, alkyd enamels, nitro enamels and a number of similar compositions.

Enamels are matte, semi-gloss and glossy. All of them are distinguished by high strength and wear resistance of the coating. In the line of any type of paint, enamel is in the top position, it is more expensive, but the quality is incommensurably higher there.

Most types of table restoration at home involve pre-staining with one or another composition, so painting is considered the basis.

Method number 2: art painting

Many home craftsmen are afraid of this method of restoration. Indeed, real art painting requires serious professional skills and talent. But no one asks you to transfer plots of great artists to furniture, and drawing a few flowers is not so difficult.

In addition, the category of artistic painting includes work with stencils and some types of appliqué. Agree, it will not be difficult to paint a cabinet or tabletop using ready-made stencils. You can find the right stencil at any book market, and sometimes even at hawkers in the underpass.

Method number 3: craquelure

According to the definition, craquelure is a finish covered with a chaotic grid of small cracks, as in an old painting. Now this effect is achieved through the use of special craquelure compositions, they are one and two-component.

  • One-component formulations are applied over the paint and upon contact with air, cracks form over the entire coating area during the drying process. They are cheaper and easier to work with. But a solid mesh looks only on plain furniture without painting or patterns.
  • Two-component craquelure varnishes are more practical, they can be used for fragmentary finishing. First, the main component is applied over the entire area, and then in the right places it is covered with an additive, which causes cracking. Moreover, the grid is formed without clear boundaries, as if in a natural way.

Craquelure looks great when combined with decoupage technique. In this case, translucent pictures cut out of thin paper napkins are glued to PVA, after which all this is completely or fragmentarily covered with craquelure varnish, as a result you get an old piece of furniture.

Method number 4: mosaic

Mosaic paintings have been known since time immemorial, ideally smalt is used to create an ornament, but this material is expensive and it is too expensive to decorate an old table with it. Plus, smalt mosaic elements have different sizes and thicknesses, so only professionals can work with them.

In our case, it is much cheaper to arrange a mosaic on an old table. There is now a wide variety of tiled and glass mosaics in construction stores, the price there is acceptable. In addition, combat is great for home mosaic tiles and even randomly broken old CDs.

As for the arrangement technology, the old countertop is usually cleaned to a tree and covered with several layers of acrylic primer, and when the primer dries, a mosaic is glued. At the amateur level, they use liquid nails or some kind of super glue, each element is glued separately.

Professionals do it differently, they take dry tile adhesive, dilute it with water and apply it all over the countertop with a notched trowel, after which they lay out the mosaic elements. The process is fast, but laying out a pattern without experience is difficult.

If there is no time to lay out each element, then you can buy ready-made mosaic canvases. There, small tiles were initially fixed to the fiberglass and you just have to stick it on the tile adhesive to the countertop, and then wipe the gaps. Fast, high quality, but not exclusive.

Method number 5: self-adhesive film

Self-adhesive film on the countertop is mounted in a maximum of an hour. Now in this market there are countless options for decorating the film, from a single-color coating to imitation wood, stone, and even reproductions of paintings by famous artists. Plus, the ornament can be ordered for reasonable money.

The installation technique itself is not complicated, but the main requirement is a perfectly even, polished base. I will tell you how to polish the countertop later, and the film is glued in 3 stages:

  1. After you have polished the countertop, the dust is wiped off and a couple of layers of acrylic primer are applied to the surface, with each layer applied after the previous one has dried.
  2. Now we need a soapy solution, you can dissolve a bar of soap in water or use dishwashing detergent. The solution is applied with a sponge to the countertop.
  3. The film is glued from the edge of the countertop. The protective paper is removed gradually as the plank is glued. From under that part of the film that lay on the countertop, air is immediately expelled along with the soap solution. It is convenient to expel air with a plastic wallpaper spatula or rags.

Method number 6: decorative tape

In stationery stores, scotch tape of different colors and shades is sold, you need to buy it in assortment and paste it on the countertop like wallpaper. Although, to be honest, colored tape is more children's version. The child will be interested in the process.

  • First, the countertop is polished and degreased with any alcohol-containing solution, for example, cologne.
  • If the plane is pasted over continuously, then the first strip is glued along a pre-drawn straight line, it is better to start from the edge of the countertop.
  • Subsequent strips are glued end-to-end and immediately rolled with a wallpaper rubber roller for seams. It is a rubber wheel with a handle, 25 - 30 mm wide.

In operation, decorative tape is inconvenient. This cover will only look good if you don't use the table at all. If, for example, to equip in such a way desk teenager, then the ribbons will begin to fly off in a couple of weeks, and there is simply no point in strengthening colored tape with varnish.

Method number 7: epoxy resin

Epoxy resin is a two-component composition that, when combined with liquid components, turns into a solid plastic. For decorative purposes, a transparent epoxy is used. You have probably seen transparent key chains inside of which there are small objects, so this is epoxy resin.

With the help of epoxy, you can quickly restore a cracked and cracked countertop. You only need to connect the components according to the instructions on the package and pour the composition into cracks and potholes.

In addition, the decorative effect will increase significantly if, for example, silver with a phosphor (a compound that causes glow in the dark) is added to a transparent epoxy. True, after the composition has completely hardened, the countertop must be sanded and polished.

Method number 8: decor under glass

It is difficult to call decor under glass restoration as such. The point is that an add-on is attached to the countertop in the form flat box height 50 - 100 mm. The top cover of this box is made of glass, and any decorations are poured inside, for example, seashells, colored stones or small souvenirs.

Method number 9: painting through tulle

In many rustic styles, a patterned tablecloth on the table is considered a must. With the help of white and any contrasting paint, in a couple of hours you can arrange the decor for a tulle tablecloth with your own hands. This is one of the options for screen painting.

  • You need to find a piece of old tulle, preferably without holes.
  • Now you need to paint the countertop white.
  • When the paint dries, lay out the tulle on it and make sure that the pattern looks adequate. To prevent the fabric from accidentally moving, it is advisable to secure it with pushpins under the table top.
  • Next, take a can of nitro enamel with contrasting paint and evenly apply the composition over the tulle. After 15 minutes, the tulle can be removed, and after half an hour the table is ready for use.

Method number 10: potal (gilding)

AT classic styles fragmentary gilding of furniture is often performed. At the amateur level budget option you can use gilding with paint, but the look will be mediocre.

Potal is the application of a thin layer of gilding to the surface. The technology is similar to working with a simple carbon paper, only instead of a layer of transfer paint, gilding is applied there. The master attaches a stencil to the surface, after which he applies a “golden” carbon paper to the right places and rolls it. The effect of gilding here is an order of magnitude higher.

When working in the potal technique, after applying a gilded layer to the surface, it is necessary to cover this surface with several layers of transparent varnish so that the gilding does not wear off.

The sequence of restoration work

We talked about the final phase and the decorative effect of each type of finish, now we will analyze the technique of preparing the table for decoration, which, by the way, is common to all methods of restoring old furniture.

Determining the degree of wear

To determine the level of deterioration of furniture, it is desirable to completely disassemble it. Then carefully inspect each element of the structure. In addition to obvious potholes, scratches and cracks, we are interested in places where the facade cladding has peeled off and places eaten away by bark beetles.

Choosing a material

For restoration work, the following materials will be needed:

  • Putty for wood, parquet compositions can be used.
  • Ground for wood. You select the composition with an eye to the paint or varnish with which you plan to cover the furniture. For example, under acrylic paint acrylic primer is used, under alkyd paint, alkyd, and under oil it is necessary to prime with drying oil.
  • Finishing paint or varnish.
  • To clean metal from rust, WD-40 is used.
  • A set of emery in the range, from large to velvet.
  • Separately, you should not take an antiseptic for a tree, it is easier to choose a primer with an antiseptic effect.

Step-by-step instruction

Illustrations Recommendations
Step 1

First you need to remove the old coating. This can be done with a large emery or building hair dryer.

It is not advisable to use chemically active paint removers, they can irreparably damage old furniture.

Step 2

All deep potholes and cracks are cleaned and expanded with a knife or chisel, after which they are primed and puttied.

Step 3

All details are polished. Start with medium grit emery and work your way up to velvet.

Step 4

Cover the table with soil and leave it to dry completely.

Step 5

Apply a minimum of 2 coats of topcoat or varnish. It is better to work with an airbrush, in the absence of an airbrush, brushes are used.

Repair of table structures

To restore the product to its former attractiveness, they resort to two methods of restoration:

  • simple;
  • with design changes.

The next step is to decorate the piece of furniture. In this case, work is performed on prepared surfaces. Repair of the product without the need to change the design is carried out taking into account the type of material. For example, if the kitchen table is made of metal, the following types of work are performed:

  1. Dismantling of the countertop is required.
  2. The old coating is removed.
  3. Puttying of individual sections or the entire surface of the product is carried out, which is necessary when the table is old.
  4. Grinding. It is carried out using sandpaper of coarse, medium or fine grit. It is chosen taking into account the degree of roughness of the coating. For example, to eliminate significant defects, coarse sandpaper is used. However, in any case, before proceeding to the next step, the kitchen table structural elements are processed with fine-grained sandpaper.
  5. After grinding, priming is performed. Special formulations are used. It is important to choose a tool designed to work with the type of material from which the table is made.
  6. Coloring is done with a roller or brush. You can proceed to this stage if the decor technique has already been selected. Applying varnish after priming will improve adhesion to the surface. To obtain a uniform coating, staining is performed several times. First, the primary processing is carried out, then it is required to allow the first layer to dry. After that, the procedure is repeated 1-2 more times.

Restoration of the legs and the surface of the table with a change in design is carried out according to the instructions considered, but some points may be added. For example, they install additional structural elements: legs, wheels, wooden fringe around the perimeter, carved details, etc. You can change the shape and size of the tabletop, its thickness. For comparison, with a simple restoration, such work is not performed.

If the wooden or metal legs become loose, you can replace the fasteners. In the case when the holes for the fasteners have increased over time, you will need to use larger screws.

An alternative option is to change the attachment points of the legs. Old holes in the countertop need to be puttied. These works are carried out on preparatory stage immediately before finishing painting. It is possible to replace the countertop by choosing a different material: glass, chipboard, chipboard.

How to update the kitchen table?

Various surface decoration techniques are used. When choosing the material from which a piece of furniture is made, it does not always play an important role. The difference in the process of finishing a wooden and metal table is the use of special primers and processing methods. If you plan to update the kitchen table with your own hands, you should consider popular decorating techniques. Most of them are carried out using paints and varnishes, but there are also those that are realized using ceramics, tulle, etc.

Painting

This is the most common way to update pieces of furniture. Apply paint and varnish, it all depends on the type of material from which the product is made. For example, a painted kitchen table with a peeling coating is restored and varnished to preserve the natural wood grain.
