How to wash mounting foam: advice from professionals. We remove dried mounting foam with the help of available means How to remove dried mounting foam from plastic

Mounting foam, as a special-purpose composition, serves to securely fasten surfaces, therefore it belongs to substances whose cleaning causes certain difficulties. When used, it can fall not only on the surfaces to be glued, but also on nearby objects, clothes. Methods for cleaning the foam composition in a fresh liquid or already solidified state may differ. And it also matters from which surfaces to remove mounting foam: With plastic windows, laminate, linoleum, glass, tiles, hand or hair.

    Cleaning methods

    Numerous alternative cleaning methods are currently in use in addition to commonly used aggressive cleaning agents such as acetone. On the different surfaces the degree of adhesion of the foam to the object may be different, therefore it is recommended to use special tools.

    Experts mainly advise such substances and methods for the successful removal of traces of mounting foam:

    1. 1. Any cleaning fluids for repair work based on acetone and nail polish removers. Successfully removes liquid foam on smooth, rough surfaces, but can leave marks on glossy and varnished areas.
    2. 2. Specially designed compositions for cleaning foam. There are a considerable number of such products on sale, some of which are designed to eliminate traces of freshly applied foam, while others serve to remove an already hardened layer. For example, for foam in a liquid fresh state, ULTIMA-Professional or PENOSIL-FoamCleaner is used. frozen footprints building material removed by other formulations: IsofoamR621, PENOSIL PremiumCured, Cosmofen5.
    3. 3. Dimexide. This pharmacy drug, which dissolves building foam upon contact with it, destroying its structure. After some time, the remnants of contaminants are easily removed from any surface. When using the drug, it is imperative to observe safety precautions and wear gloves.
    4. 4. Vegetable oil. It is able to soften the composition of the construction foam, which helps to gently remove it from the surface, achieving complete removal of traces. It is recommended to apply oil after removing the hardened top layer of the main foam mass.
    5. 5. Ordinary water. It is able to soften a thin layer of building composition. Some time after wet treatment, the solution can be removed by scraping off the surface.
    6. 6. Freeze. The use of low temperatures helps in the delicate handling of fabrics that accidentally get polyurethane foam. Negative temperature helps to bond the molecules of the building composition, which leads to their hardening and makes it easier to remove it from the surface.

    Experts recommend that after choosing one of the foam cleaning products, test its effect on a small inconspicuous area of the contaminated surface. If no visible damage is noticed, then the drug can be used.

    Instructions for cleaning foam from different surfaces

    It is much easier to eliminate traces of inaccurate application of mounting foam than to subsequently remove the frozen building composition. Nevertheless, this problem can also be solved using one of the above methods.

    Releasing the tool from the remains of the composition

    When using the gun after the end of work, particles of mounting foam may remain in it. Experts offer to wash construction tools from polyurethane foam in two ways:

    1. 1. Mechanical cleaning using pointed surfaces (knife, screwdriver, awl).
    2. 2. Dry cleaning. It involves the use of a cylinder with a foam solvent. Effective formulations are represented by PENOSIL or OPPA. After using them, the trigger of the gun is pressed until a clear liquid comes out of it. After such a procedure, the instrument regains its former performance.

    You should be aware that in cases of liquid or already solidified foam, industrial production means with different compositions of the substance are used.

    Cleaning plastic

    It is possible to wipe the mounting compound even from plastic and PVC (windows or doors). Polyvinyl chloride is considered a delicate surface, as it reacts negatively to aggressive liquids such as acetone containing solvents. The interaction of PVC with such substances can result in stains that cannot be subsequently removed.

    When cured, polyurethane foam is easily cleaned with a plastic scraper or a piece of wood. Traces, as a rule, do not remain. The task can be solved with vegetable oil, which is applied to the marks and kept on the PVC surface for half an hour. After this, contamination is easily removed with a regular damp sponge or scraper.

    Methods for cleaning wooden objects

    Wooden doors and windows are most often covered with varnish or paint with the effect of protection against moisture and wear. But it is permissible to clean the assembly composition from the tree. To remove building foam, experts do not recommend using traditional cleaners, this leads to damage to a smooth surface.

    Salt solution is used for wooden objects. Dissolve one tablespoon of table salt in 200 ml of warm water. The resulting liquid is treated with a contaminated area. After 5 minutes, wipe the surface with a moistened soft sponge.

    Means for the treatment of metal surfaces

    You can wipe off the mounting compound as with metal door as well as baths. Before cleaning procedures, the top layer of the frozen foam mass is removed, then the problem areas of the metal are abundantly smeared with sunflower oil. Keep in this state for at least half an hour, after which the remaining dirt is removed with any cloth or soft sponge. The places where the oil was applied are washed with warm soapy water to remove greasy traces.

    Removing foam from glass

    Polyurethane foam is cleaned from glass surfaces only when the building composition has completely hardened. With the help of a sharp object (knife, razor blade, glass scraper), the foam is scraped off the surface without any consequences. There are no traces left on the glass surface after cleaning. After possible opaque areas are removed with nail polish remover or any other solvent.

    Floor treatment

    If construction foam has got on the linoleum, then it is easy to remove it, since it is not absorbed into its structure. To solve the problem, they wait for the composition to solidify and then cut off the surface layer of the foam, but traces remain. They are removed with special cleaners for dissolving polyurethane foam that do not contain acetone, or dimexide. The cost of such a tool justifies the efforts of users, since solvents, especially those containing acetone, leave whitish spots on the surface of the floor covering.

    Laminate requires more delicate handling than glass or linoleum. Problematic areas of the floor are treated with a special cleaning agent that dissolves polyurethane foam, or dimexide. After dissolving the composition of the foam, its traces are easily removed with a rag or kitchen sponge.

    From parquet or parquet board fresh foam is recommended to be removed with one of the special cleansers. The frozen composition is also removed with a solution of dimexide. The agent is carefully applied to the contaminated surface with a soft brush or cloth. After a quarter of an hour, the composition of the foam is destroyed, and it is easily removed with a hard sponge for washing dishes.

    To clean wooden floor coverings, special cleaning compounds of industrial production or dimexide are also used. Such substances are intended for deep penetration into the pores of wood, the destruction of the foam particles located there. After an hour, foreign elements are brushed off the surface with a brush. The issue of removing mounting foam from other wooden products is solved in a similar way: doors or windows.

    Strong compounds are used with extreme caution on varnished surfaces. Such products can, together with the foam composition, remove the varnish coating and lead to the appearance of complex stains.

    Even after the use of solvents, subtle traces of contamination may remain. In such cases, radical measures are used - grinding problem areas of the surface with sandpaper or a special grinding disc. In some cases, to equalize appearance the entire surface, polish the entire area of the product.

    Removing traces of polyurethane foam from soft floor coverings without damaging the pile is much more difficult. The use of solvents or cleaning fluids can lead to discoloration of the carpet, aggressive substances can even dissolve the pile of the product. In addition, the bond with the fabric of the polyurethane foam is quite strong in order to clean it with solvents. Experts recommend removing it plain water. Problem areas moistened, covered with a damp warm cloth and left in this state for several hours to soften the contamination. After the time has elapsed, the dirt is removed with a brush or a hard construction tool such as a spatula.

    Cleaning clothes

    It is difficult to completely wash the mounting foam from the fabric, as it binds strongly to the fibers and eats into its structure. The proposed measures will help to significantly reduce its impact on the fabric. When removing traces, it is not recommended to use acetone containing substances. Acetone can discolor clothes and even ruin the item..

    It is recommended to remove the assembly mixture that has got on clothes with the following means:

    • white spirit;
    • stain remover;
    • gasoline (meaning refined gasoline that does not contain impurities);
    • special solvent mounting foam.

    It is necessary to apply the listed funds according to the following algorithm:

    1. 1. The foam cap (fresh or already frozen) is removed from the surface of the material.
    2. 2. One of the above remedies is applied to the problem area.
    3. 3. The fabric is left in this state for a while, at least a quarter of an hour. The duration of action depends on the type of fabric, for delicate it is better to withstand within 10 minutes.
    4. 4. Remove the remaining substance with a cleaning motion with a cloth, soft sponge or non-hard brush.
    5. 5. If there are still traces of the mounting compound on the material, repeat the procedure.
    6. 6. Finishing cleaning, the clothes are washed using a regular powder with the addition of a stain remover.

    It is permissible to remove construction foam from garments without the use of aggressive cleaning agents. If there are fragmentary pollution, small splashes of foam building composition on the thing, then it is recommended to use cooling in the freezer to remove them.

    1. 1. The contaminated item is placed in a plastic bag, which is placed in the freezer.
    2. 2. After one hour, the clothes are removed from the freezer, and the pieces of the building composition are removed from the fabric with their hands.
    3. 3. If dirt remains on the material, then they can be washed off by treating with a stain remover.
    4. 4. Finishing cleaning, clothes are washed.

    Removing the assembly composition from the hands

    During the application of building mixtures, mounting foam may get on the skin of the hands. In such cases, it is immediately removed. Only in conditions of instant response is it possible to get rid of the building composition without the use of special efforts. In these situations, they act like this:

    1. 1. Wipe with a damp cloth or rag from the edges to the center of contamination, preventing the spread of contamination to clean areas of the skin.
    2. 2. Cleaning is permissible with special solvents designed to remove mounting foam, which are recommended to be purchased in advance together with building compounds.
    3. 3. Products that contain acetone, nail polish remover will also be suitable. After their application, the skin is washed with warm soapy water and a moisturizer is applied.
    4. 4. With kerosene, heated vegetable oil, rubbing movements remove building foam without visible traces.
    5. 5. With a handful of rock salt, gently rub the skin with the remnants of the assembly mixture.
    6. 6. Body scrub is used after steaming the skin in warm water.
    7. 7. The building composition is removed without using special means, but together with the thinnest layer of the epidermis on the hands. In this case, steaming of the skin is used. Hands are dipped in a warm soapy solution for 10 minutes, after which the softened foam is easily peeled off. To achieve the best effect, you can rub the steamed skin with fine table salt, which will act as a scrub. For sensitive and thin skin, it is recommended to add table salt to the bath with hot water for steaming: for 1 liter of liquid 1 tbsp. l. powder.

    Despite the frequent use of dimexide as a cleaning agent for contamination with mounting foam, it is not recommended to use it for cleaning the skin, since the medicinal liquid is recognized as toxic to humans.

    The stability and high degree of bonding of polyurethane foam with the skin complicate the task of cleaning the dried foam from the hands, often special solvents are not enough. Helps mechanical removal using pumice, hard brushes or fine sandpaper. Before using these products, you must treat your hands with vegetable oil or a softening cream. Use for cleaning hard objects and intensive actions leads to damage to the skin of the hands. After complete removal of the building mixture, it is recommended to wash the skin in warm running water with soap, re-treat with a nourishing cream or massage oil. Hand preparations containing aloe juice and ginseng have excellent regenerating properties.

Polyurethane foam is a tool for performing construction and repair exterior and interior works. As an adhesive, sealant, heat and sound insulation. It is necessary when installing doors, windows, installation plastic pipes, siding, plastic panels.

In operation, mounting foam is capable of exhibiting an unfortunate property: sticking in unwanted places and leaving blots that quickly adhere to the contaminating surfaces of nearby objects. Moreover, they cannot be washed off with water, it is dangerous to scrub with solvents and dry rags. This problem is relevant for not cheaply purchased PVC windows, on which inept cleaning of foam stains can forever leave irreparable marks or affected areas that violate the aesthetics of the window and spoil the appearance of the entire room.

How to prepare for work with mounting foam?

Before starting work, you should take care of personal protective equipment in advance. Protect the window and the interior of the room adjacent to it.

And also know the answers to the questions:

  • How to clean mounting foam from plastic windows, doors, tiles or contaminated flooring?
  • How to properly clean foam stains?
  • How to clean it after hardening?

And of course, make sure that at least one of the tools that can wipe mounting foam from a plastic window, window sill or slopes is present in the home arsenal.

Contaminated objects and hands do not need to be washed with water. This only enhances the polymerization process, as well as the adhesion of the foam composition to the surface.

Below, within the framework of this article, you will receive comprehensive answers to each of the questions asked.

What solutions clean up traces of polyurethane foam well?

There are two ways by which you can wash the foam from plastic windows:

  1. Use special chemical solvents that provide an excellent effect (it is important to follow the instructions and be careful not to damage the surfaces to be cleaned).
  2. Apply household or pharmacological agents available in the kitchen or in the medicine cabinet, the effectiveness of which has already been proven in practice.

In the state of a semi-hardened mass, the foam is well removed from glass, plastic, unpainted metal mechanically using a rubber or wooden scraper, spatula.

Consider industrial tools that can easily and completely remove foam from a plastic window, which include special chemical compositions and solvents with a wide range of applications.

Special products for washing tools, windows or hands

The market offers special tools to help clean mounting foam not only from plastic windows, but also from tools and hands.

These include:

  • Wet wipes impregnated with solvent;
  • Liquid solutions (for example, "Cosmofen" (cleaner, do not confuse it with glue!) - a solution designed exclusively for cleaning plastic items. When buying it, you should pay attention to the concentration on which the aggressiveness or strength of the composition depends. So, if you see on the number “5” on the package means that this is a potent solution.The number “20” indicates a weak concentration or a strong dilution of the agent.

When choosing a cleaner, it is important to understand that retail chains offer polyurethane foam from various manufacturers. It is no coincidence that advertising booklets announce that each brand develops its own composition of foam and liquid solutions for cleaning it from contaminated places.

All of them have similar properties, but do not always match the recipe with the products of competitors. Therefore, it is always recommended to buy the same type of batches of products, that is, having bought several cans of foam, at the same time you need to purchase a liquid product of the same brand, designed to flush the gun under pressure. It will help clean up fresh foam blots.

Aerosols and pastes softening dried foam

Aerosol solutions are very convenient to use when you need to remove old or dried mounting foam from plastic windows and other items.

The following brands of sprayable solvents are in demand:

  • PENO-OFF;
  • Platina Cleaner;
  • PUREX;
  • HOBBY;
  • "Russian professional"
  • SOUDAL PU Remover.

The duration of the aerosol is only 10 minutes. Gently spray the product, trying not to capture the clean areas of the object adjacent to the spot of dried foam with a cloud. We wait a few minutes, and then easily rub the softened foam with a soft brush.

Common solvents and improvised means

To wipe off the pollution, you can use solvents:

  • White Spirit;
  • acetone
  • solvent no. 646.

If you cover a lump of dried mounting foam with a rag soaked in Dimexide, then after 30 minutes only a hill of dry powder will remain from it. Therefore, when cleaning surfaces with it, one should not withstand the processing time for more than 20 minutes.

How can a hostess quickly and rationally clean the foam from PVC windows?

In order to safely and accurately remove fresh mounting foam from plastic windows at home, when the necessary special tools are not at hand, you should use sunflower oil heated to 50 ° C.

For this:

  • Wet a clean cotton pad in warm oil and cover it with a stain of dirt from the mounting foam.
  • We leave it for 20 - 30 minutes.
  • After that, with the hard side of a kitchen sponge, wipe the softened mixture.
  • We wash the cleaned place on the plastic with soap and water.

Important hint! What to do if you notice a fresh blot of foam, for example, on a PVC profile or on the surface of a double-glazed window? Do not attempt to clean immediately by simply wiping the freshly soiled area with a dry or wet cloth. Acting in this way, you will smear the composition and increase the area of the stain of contamination. Be patient and gently remove the foam with a cotton swab dipped in a special solvent with light touches.

Almost no type of construction work can do without polyurethane foam. With its help, cracks are closed, window and door openings are filled, certain types of products are glued together, and a lot of other useful actions are performed. In the process of work, it is very rarely possible to do without the sticky contents of the cylinder getting on different kinds surfaces in the immediate vicinity, as well as on and clothing. The main question of this article is how to clean mounting foam that is in a liquid or already hardened state.

Polyurethane foam refers to substances whose removal causes certain difficulties. Until recently, acetone was considered the only cleaning agent. Now there are many alternative ways cleaning, which we will analyze in this material. On the different materials foam acts in different ways, so you need to use different means selectively.

We list the means by which you can deal with traces of mounting foam:

Tip: If you decide to use some kind of foam cleanser, treat a small area with it first. If there are no consequences for the surface, you can use this product for a complete cleaning.

Cleaning foam from various surfaces

Freeing the gun from the remaining foam

After finishing work, if a gun was used, particles of polyurethane foam remained in it. How to clean the gun from mounting foam? This can be done in two ways:

  • mechanical cleaning. With the help of a knife, a flat screwdriver or an awl, the remnants of the frozen composition are removed;
  • Chemical cleaning. To do this, a cylinder with a foam solvent is inserted into the gun. For example, PENOSIL or OPPA. After that, you should pull the trigger until a clear liquid comes out of the gun.

After such cleaning, the device will restore its performance.

Note: For liquid and already hardened foam, there are different types solvents. Each of them copes better with a certain composition of the substance.

Cleaning PVC windows or doors

How to wipe mounting foam from a plastic window or the same door? PVC reacts negatively to strong solvents, especially those containing acetone. As a result of interaction with the PVC surface, stains may appear on the surface of the material, which will be impossible to remove.

Foam is removed from PVC windows in an elementary way. When frozen, it is easily scraped off with a plastic scraper or a piece of wood. There are usually no traces left. You can also use vegetable oil, which is applied to the marks and aged for 30 minutes. After that, the dirt is easily washed off with a damp sponge or the same scraper.

Cleaning wooden doors and windows

Usually, wooden doors and windows are varnished or painted for better protection and aesthetics. How to clean mounting foam from painted or varnished doors? The use of traditional cleaners is not always recommended in order not to damage the smooth surface.

Dissolve a tablespoon of table salt in a glass of plain water, and then treat the contaminated area with the solution. After 5 minutes, wipe the surface with a damp kitchen sponge.

Cleaning of metal surfaces

Don't know how to wipe mounting foam from a metal door? The bulk is cut off, and then the contaminated metal is wetted with sunflower oil. It is aged for 30 minutes, after which the remnants of contaminants are removed with any cloth or sponge. The place of exposure to the oil is washed with soapy water to remove traces of fat.

Removing dirt from glasses

The composition is removed from the glass only when it completely hardens. Using a sharp knife or blade, the composition is scraped off the glass without consequences. There are no marks left on the glass. If there are any opaque areas left, you can use the usual nail polish remover or other solvent.

Floor cleaning

Linoleum

Foam is not absorbed into the surface, so it can be removed very easily. To do this, you need to wait until the composition hardens, and then cut off the bulk of it. Some traces are bound to remain. They can be removed with a special cleaner that does not contain acetone, or with Dimexide. Please note that after using acetone, dull spots may remain on the surface of linoleum.

Carpets

What can be used to clean mounting foam from soft floor coverings in order to do without cutting off the pile? The best option will use ordinary water. The foam binds well to the pile, so it is pointless to remove it immediately with a solvent. Place a cloth dampened with water on the remaining foam. After a few hours, the composition will soften, and it can be easily removed with a brush or spatula.

Laminate

Contaminated areas must be treated with a special cleaner or Dimexide. After the destruction of the foam composition, it will be easy to remove it with a piece of cloth or.

Parquet and parquet board

If the foam is fresh, it is recommended to use one of the cleansers, if available. And how to wash the dried mounting foam? First you need to cut off the main frozen mass. After that, use a solution of dimexide, gently applying it to the contaminated surface with a brush or rag. After 15 minutes, the foam will break down and can be easily removed with a hard sponge used for washing dishes.

Tree

Apply special cleaning compounds or Demixid. These substances are able to penetrate deep into the pores of wood, destroying the particles of foam located there. After an hour, using a brush, the surface is cleaned of foreign elements. In the same way, you can solve the question of how to remove mounting foam from a door or window, which are wooden products.

Important: Be very careful when using strong compounds on varnished surfaces, as they can cause the removal of the varnish layer and the appearance of stains.

If traces of contamination are still visible after the use of solvents, the radical solution is to sand the surface with sandpaper or a sanding disc.

Cleaning clothes

The question of how to clean mounting foam from clothes is relevant for many people, because clothes are most often contaminated.

It is almost impossible to completely remove the foam from the fabric, since it binds very strongly to the fibers. However, it is quite possible to try to significantly reduce its effect on the fabric. It should be said right away that it is better not to use substances containing acetone, since acetone can change the color of clothes, and even ruin them.

How to wipe the mounting foam that got on the clothes? The following options are suitable for this:

  • White Spirit;
  • stain remover;
  • solvent gasoline. It is pure gasoline without impurities. This is the one to use;
  • foam solvent.

Now consider, not how to wash mounting foam from clothes, but how:

  1. A cap of foam (fresh or already frozen) is removed from the surface of the fabric.
  2. One of the above compositions is applied to the soiled area.
  3. There is a pause of 15 minutes.
  4. The remains of the substance are removed with a cloth, sponge or soft brush.
  5. If traces of foam remain on the fabric, the procedure can be repeated.
  6. The clothes are washed using powder and stain remover.

We use the freezer

This method can help if there are separate splashes of the foam composition on the clothes, as well as if the foam gets on delicate fabrics.

Do not know how to remove mounting foam from clothes without the use of solvents? We tell:

  1. The contaminated item should be put in a plastic bag, and the bag should be placed in the freezer.
  2. After 1 hour, the clothes should be removed from the freezer, and pieces of frozen foam should be removed from the fabric with your hands.
  3. If stains remain, they can be treated with a stain remover.
  4. Clothes need to be washed.

It is easier to prevent the occurrence of troubles with foam than to eliminate the consequences of such errors later. However, using one of the above methods, it is possible to completely or partially eliminate pollution.

During construction or repair work, mounting foam will help you get rid of various gaps, fill joints or seams.

But it is very easy for her to stain both herself and the surfaces that are nearby, so how do you wash the mounting foam?

What can be used to wash it? In this article, we will answer these questions.

Precautions before cleaning

Professionals prohibit the use of vinegar or any means that contain acid to clean the foam!

Because of these products, you will not only ruin the surface, but you can also get burned. Mounting foam with the help of these means cannot be removed.

In addition, it is best to wipe off the mounting foam as soon as it is on the surface. It will be much easier and faster than if you wait until it dries.

So how do you wash fresh polyurethane foam?

Procedure steps

  1. Remove foam from the surface with a scraper. It is important that the foam does not spread to an even larger area of the surface and does not fall again, be extremely careful.
  2. Now you need to process the surface itself.

Surface cleaners

Remember that there is no single option for every surface.

If the surface is made of stone, concrete, metal, then you can wash the mounting foam using acetone, aggressive chemicals.

If the surface is made of glass or plastic, "Dimexide" will help wipe the mounting foam.

Dimexide is medicinal product for external use, which you can find in any pharmacy.

An alternative to "Dimexide" will be sunflower oil, which should be applied for half an hour, and then removed with a damp cloth.

If mounting foam gets on floor coverings how to wash it? You can use this method if the mounting foam has just hit the floor.

Get a special cleaner, it will soften the sealant, and then use a spatula to remove the residue.

If the surface is made of wood
(even if it is painted or varnished), dilute soda and salt in equal proportions, wipe the foam mark with this solution and soak for 3 to 5 minutes. Wipe the surface with a kitchen sponge.

If foam gets on your hands

The foam is non-toxic and non-toxic, which means it is not dangerous to humans.

How to wash mounting foam from the skin?

You can do nothing, if you can wait a few days, then it will start to fall off by itself.

But if you can’t wait a couple of days, then how can you wash the foam from your hands?

There are several easy methods.

If foam gets on the fabric

And how can you wash mounting foam from clothes?

This will not be easy, as the removers can harm the fabric, change the color.

If you still decide to try, then we recommend using these tools:

  • stain removers;
  • White Spirit;
  • solvents for polyurethane foam;
  • petrol.

Action algorithm

It is almost the same with each tool, it is very important to take into account the type of fabric and its features.

All of the above tips mainly referred to fresh foam, which has not yet had time to harden.

How to wash dried mounting foam?

It will be much harder, you will have to be patient and persevering, because, most likely, in order to remove one stain, you will have to use several methods or carry out the same method several times.

Choose store solvents specifically for a surface like yours.

Also get a brush with which you will apply the solvent, and also a spatula with which you will remove the solvent.

Action algorithm

  1. Use a knife/blade/razor to cut off the foam layer without damaging the surface.
  2. Work with a brush and mortar the remaining layer of foam (follow the instructions written on the mortar).
  3. Scrub the mark with a kitchen sponge.
  4. Remove remaining product and contamination with a spatula.

In this article, we told you how to get rid of foam, but it is best to prevent foam from getting on any surfaces.

Therefore, when working with mounting foam, follow the tips:

  1. be careful and attentive, it is better to wear unnecessary closed clothes / work uniform,
  2. you should prepare the surfaces and cover them with something, so you prevent unwanted ingress of mounting foam on the surface.

It is understandable, such windows are not only better than wooden ones from an aesthetic point of view, but also ahead of them in terms of technical specifications. Plastic windows retain heat better, do not let unnecessary noise and dust into the house. In general, some advantages. So if you do not have plastic windows yet, then think about installing them.

When installing plastic windows, however, as well as any structures made of glass, plastic, concrete and even metal (for example, doors), mounting foam is used. This excellent sealant can rightly be called an indispensable assistant! It gets into even the smallest and narrow gaps, seals the seams, glues the details. In addition, high-quality polyurethane foam has heat, sound and moisture insulating characteristics.

However, as is usually the case, among all these significant advantages, comparable to a huge barrel of honey, there was a small drawback. The role of a fly in the ointment is the difficulty of washing the mounting foam that has fallen on surrounding objects during its use.

We will tell you how you can wash non-dried and dried mounting foam from hands, from clothes, from doors and other surfaces.

If the mounting foam has not yet dried, i.e. finally harden, it is very easy to wash it with various solvents, acetone, special cleaners and, of course, White Spirit. That is why, before using mounting foam, prepare one of these (for example: Sol-Off, Soudal Pu Remover, Thinner 646 or Cosmofen 10) to remove sealant drops.

What to do while the mounting foam is not frozen

If you realized it in time and decided not to complicate your life by scraping and rubbing off the hardened mounting foam, then arm yourself with some kind of solvent and a rag and carefully wipe off the foam that has not yet hardened. For everything about everything you will need just a few minutes.

Important! However, not every surface can safely remove uncured sealant with a solvent. For example, varnished and painted surfaces are afraid of such an "execution" like hell. In the first case, it is highly likely that together with the mounting foam you will erase the varnish layer, and in the second case, you can leave ugly whitish or yellowish spots. Therefore, before you start washing the mounting foam (or better, before using it at all), check how the surface will react to the solvent of your choice. Rub a small amount of the product in an inconspicuous place and wait, if everything is fine, you can proceed with the installation, if not, then first select a suitable cleaner.

Advice!

If you are facing an insoluble, as it seems to you, dilemma: what to choose between two “evils” - to scrub off fresh polyurethane foam, knowing that the surface will be LITTLE damaged, or literally “bite off” and scrape off the hardened polyurethane foam? It is more rational to choose all the same the first option. However, if the damage is still significant or as options: you could not find a suitable solvent or did not notice drops of mounting foam that got into the wrong places, then use our tips on how to wash dried mounting foam.

How to wash dried mounting foam

How can you wash the hardened polyurethane foam

There are several ways to remove cured mounting foam. However, no matter which method you choose, a small trace will still remain. This is connected, so to speak, with nature, or rather with the characteristics and structure of the mounting foam, with the principle by which it works. Namely: the foam is in the can under very high pressure, when released to the outside, it expands tenfold. At the same time, the mounting foam tightly fastens necessary items, because it penetrates the material at the molecular level (in scientific language this is called “adhesion”). This means that no matter how you try to wipe off, scrape off the mounting foam, know that it managed to penetrate the substance and “spoil” its structure.

Now it remains only to choose the method of cleaning the mounting foam, which will “cover up traces” as much as possible.

Method number 1

Take a few sharp blades and very carefully cut the foam just below the spine. Then apply sunflower oil or thinner to the remaining foam particles. Wait 15-20 minutes, during which time the remaining foam should soften. After that, with a double-sided sponge, begin, as it were, to erase the mounting foam, alternately alternating the soft side with the hard one. When you wipe off the foam, prepare a warm soapy solution and wash the place where the foam was.

Method number 2

With sharp blades, we try to carefully and maximally cut off the frozen mounting foam. Then, with gloves, we apply Dimexide gel for joints (or any other analogue), leave again for 20 minutes, so that the remaining foam softens. We wipe the foam with a double-sided sponge, and then wipe the place with a damp cloth.

Method number 3

If the mounting foam needs to be removed from a non-smooth surface or from a surface that you are going to paint or varnish, then it can be literally scraped off with blades and sandpaper.

How to wash mounting foam from hands

It is best to wash off the mounting foam, we repeat, when it has not had time to completely harden and with the help of acetone or various solvents. And what to do if the polyurethane foam has dried up on your hands? Stock up on hot water, a rag, a pumice stone, hand cream (any other nourishing cream or regular oil will do), and a lot of patience. Steam your hands in a container of hot water (hold them for about 30 minutes), dry your hands, apply a rich layer of oily cream and start wiping the mounting foam from your hands with a piece of pumice stone. And, of course, help yourself with your nails - some pieces can be removed by prying them with your fingernail.

How to wipe mounting foam from clothes

It is clear that no one does repairs in weekend clothes. For this occasion and any other housework, simpler clothes are chosen, from the category “you can wear it in the country” or “it’s not a pity to throw it away”. However, the cases are different, for example, you went to visit, where there was a recent repair and accidentally stepped into an uncured sealant, or you came with an audit to check how the employees, son, etc. are doing. etc. and again, they accidentally stained their clothes with polyurethane foam. What to do in such cases? Is it possible to reconcile and send the thing to the trash?

In such cases, one rule works, the faster you realize it and run to scrub the mounting foam from your clothes with acetone, solvent, cleaner, the better. When the sealant completely hardens (it takes several hours), the thing can no longer be washed off and saved.

However, there is also a pitfall here: some things begin to bleach under the influence of a solvent, especially those on whose tags it flaunts. So choose what is best: to walk in things without drops of polyurethane foam, but in their places there will be faded or yellowish spots or in clothes with frozen drops of polyurethane foam. We agree that the choice is not so hot in any case.

How to clean mounting foam from a door

When mounting the door, the mounting foam often gets on the surface of the door itself.

It is best to wash off the mounting foam when it has not yet dried up and with the help of special cleaning products, then there is a great chance that there will be no trace of the sealant on the surface.

How strongly the mounting foam will affect the door depends on the quality of the wood and whether it is painted or varnished. If yes, then scrub the foam with a solvent, if not, then scrape off the foam, and clean off its remnants with fine-grained sandpaper, and then varnish or paint the door.

How to prepare the room before working with mounting foam

The golden rule that it's easier to prevent a problem than to deal with its consequences works with polyurethane foam. Therefore, before you start installing windows, doors and something else using mounting foam, prepare the room for work.

Take out all valuable and expensive things.

Put on work clothes, gloves, and a hat. It is necessary to cover the skin as much as possible, and most importantly the hair, so that it will not be a pity to throw it away or ruin it.

Cover with oilcloth all the surrounding objects that could not be pulled out. The same applies to the floor, batteries, etc.

What could not be covered with a film or what is in close proximity to the area of work - grease with oil or fat cream. This is especially true for varnished surfaces.

Believe me, it is much easier and cheaper to prepare a place for working with polyurethane foam than to scrub and scrape it off later without being sure that there will be no trace of it.
