How to cut a ceiling plinth on a miter box. How to cut down a ceiling plinth - ways. Alternative options for trimming fillets

Finishing finishing work in the room? In this case, it's time to think about how to cut the corners of the ceiling plinth. After all, it is from this element of decoration that depends on how aesthetically and finished the interior will look.

Cutting technology for ceiling skirting boards

In this article, we will look at the basic ways of how to cut skirting boards to the ceiling so that the finished result looks as clean as possible. In order to understand how to cut correctly, let's look at what ceiling plinths are and what materials they are made of.

materials

Ceiling fillets are of the following types:

  • , but the most available material gaining more and more popularity. Insufficient strength in this case is not a disadvantage, since the plinth is out of reach and does not undergo mechanical stress.
  • - it is also an inexpensive finishing material, but with a higher density than polystyrene. Therefore, when cutting such products, you have to make more significant efforts. Despite the complexity of processing, the material is cut with a sharp knife.
  • Wood is the most difficult material to process. To install a wooden plinth, it is best to use a hacksaw.

Structurally ceiling plinth is a kind of decorative stucco. This element appears on sale under various names, for example, fillet and baguettes. Whatever the choice production materials, the ceiling plinth is the excellent decision for registration of interiors of the room. This structural element is mounted on one of the most difficult sections of the surface of the walls and ceiling - at the junction.

If you know how to trim the ceiling plinth in the corners, you can create an aesthetically pleasing interior design even if there are slight reliefs on the wall surface. In addition, using a fillet, you can hide the errors made during installation. false ceiling, when sticking wallpaper or when painting walls.

Before proceeding with the installation, you need to decide how to cut the ceiling skirting boards. The main difficulty is to maintain the required angle when cutting. Indeed, only in this case, two skirting boards will converge at the junction of two walls and a ceiling without visible gaps.

Tip: if gaps have formed during the installation of fillets due to lack of experience, they can be repaired using baguette glue, silicone or sealants white color with a similar consistency.

Cutting corners on two adjacent fillets

So, let's figure out how to cut the corners of the ceiling plinth. There are several the same effective ways: cutting with and without miter box.

A miter box is a plastic, wood, or metal device that acts as a template to guide the hacksaw or knife to the desired angle.

Cutting with a miter box allows you to achieve maximum accuracy of the machined end face.

Processing parts without a template is possible, but only if you have sufficient skill, a particularly accurate eye and know at what angle to cut the ceiling plinth. If we decide to decorate with fillets a right angle, traditional for most private and apartment buildings, then the ends of both blanks are cut at an angle of 45 degrees, so that if the two parts are combined, a tight connection is formed without a visible gap.

Tip: Before cutting your ceiling moldings, try making a few cuts on a trial plank.

We cut in a chair

Correct cutting instructions:

  • We pick up a miter box that looks like a tray made of aluminum, plastic or wood. Regardless of what this carpentry tool is made of, it must be used with extreme caution. With inexperienced handling on the miter box, you can leave gashes or blunt the cutting tool.

On the side walls of the tool, we can see the gaps located at the required angle. The gaps guide the cutting tool blade at the required angle to the longitudinal axis of the tray.

  • We install the plinth bar in the miter box in the position in which it will be located on the ceiling. We fix the part in the miter box so that the side that subsequently presses against the ceiling fits snugly against the side of the tray.
  • We insert the cutting tool into the required gap and cut. For polystyrene foam and polystyrene foam, a hacksaw or a sharp knife with a long and rigid blade is used. For wooden skirting boards, a hacksaw with larger teeth is used.
  • After one part is cut, we process the end of the adjacent plinth and apply it to the wall in a trial manner. If there are small gaps on the foam product (no more than 2 mm), we straighten the end with a sharp knife. If the gap is noticeable at the junction of wooden skirting boards, we adjust both ends using sandpaper glued to a wooden block.

If you have learned how to cut a ceiling plinth, it will not be difficult to understand that this is an uncomplicated process. But avoid applying excessive force when processing the ends of the fillets. The fact is that by exerting a mechanical effect on the foam or polystyrene foam, you can significantly deform the decorative element. Styrofoam crumbles easily, while polystyrene is pressed through. By the way, even wooden decorative elements crack and split with inept and hasty sawing.

We cut without a miter box

It may turn out that the miter box is not at hand, and how to cut the ceiling plinth in the corners in this case? There are three ways in which you will achieve the best results.

The first and easiest way to make a miter box yourself from improvised means. In order to make a template for cutting skirting boards, we prepare three identical boards 0.5 meters long and 15 cm wide. We hammer all three parts into a single structure, so that the side boards adjoin the transverse part at a right angle.

Next, we arm ourselves with a protractor and mark an angle of 45 degrees on the surface of the planks. If there is no protractor, you can use a school square, where one angle is straight and the other two are 45 degrees. Before cutting corners in planks, you should outline the vertical direction of the cuts.

The second method allows you to do without the miter box as such. In this case, instead of a wooden or plastic template, you can use a paper blank. Arm yourself with a protractor or square, a simple pencil and thick paper. We cut out a template of the shape we need from thick cardboard paper.

After that, we apply the resulting paper “pattern” to the corresponding side of the plinth and cut the foam. Actually, you can do without a template made of thick paper and draw the necessary markings on the plinth itself with your own hands.

Method three: use improvised means instead of a tray or template. For example, you can use the angle between the ceiling and the wall as a template, or just a table pushed up against the wall. How to cut a ceiling plinth using such an impromptu tool?

We mark on the wall, ceiling and directly on the plinth the angle at which the butt will be cut. Next, insert the plinth into an imaginary template with the butt close to the corner. Now it remains to arm yourself with a mounting knife with a sharp blade and cut off the extra piece, in accordance with the intended risks.

How to cut corners on ceiling moldings without using a template? It turns out that this is quite simple, it is enough to arm yourself with a pencil, a knife and an eye gauge. Mark the baseboard and cut the corner. The same should be done on the other plinth. Next, we apply both blanks to each other and look at what places everything superfluous appears, and correct the flaws.

  • In order not to get confused when taking measurements, measure the bar between two corners as follows: the length for internal corners is measured directly from the internal corners, while the distance from the external corners is measured from a point separated from the internal corner by the width of the plinth into the interior of the room.
  • By installing foam skirting boards at the junction of the wall and stretch ceiling Apply adhesive only to the part of the baseboard that is in contact with the wall, not the vinyl sheet.
  • The plinth should be finally fixed only when the angle of the adjacent plank has been adjusted to it.
  • If the walls near the ceiling and near the floor form an even right angle, it is easier to adjust the planks at the bottom by laying out the workpieces on the floor or on a specially prepared table.
  • When starting to install the planks, get ready for the fact that the intended sections will need to be adjusted at least several times, so be patient.
  • Don't worry about small gaps that remain in the corners, because they are not difficult to putty.
  • WITH special attention you should approach the installation of ceiling wooden skirting boards made of rare wood species. Puttying the gaps, in this case, is unlikely to give the expected result, since a rather bright spot will stand out against the background of the texture.
  • Some manufacturers of high-end ceiling plinths, in addition to the main strips, make special right-angle inserts. The purchase of such inserts will greatly simplify the work and improve the quality of the finished result.

The choice of glue and gluing

So, we figured out how to cut the corners of the ceiling plinth, it remains to decide how to glue it.

  • Starting the installation of foam strips, you need to decide on the type of glue. It is important to understand that the adhesive for installation work must not only firmly fix the bar, but also quickly set in order to prevent slipping decorative element.
  • If installation is carried out over wallpaper, it is advisable to use white acrylic sealant or universal mounting adhesives, such as "Universal Moment Installation". These adhesives provide optimal and, importantly, durable fixation.
  • In the event that the installation is carried out on cement or gypsum leveled and primed plaster, acrylic sealant or gypsum putty is used.
  • Professional installation of ceiling plinths starts from the corners. After all the corners are glued, you can proceed with the installation of the strips on straight segments.
  • Mounting on putty provides for the need to use finishing compounds left after finishing the walls. At the same time, when planning to use acrylic sealant be prepared to spend money. After all, you will have to buy not only the sealant itself, but also a mounting gun for applying it.

Conclusion

The renovation in your apartment is coming to an end. The specialists have completed the finishing of the walls and ceiling, and are already ready to start gluing the ceiling plinths. Why pay money for something you can handle yourself? The price of professional installation of foam strips, on average, is equal to the cost of the material itself.

Believe me, with a little patience, you will be able to handle the gluing yourself. To do this, carefully read about how to cut the corners of the ceiling plinth and install.

Ceiling plinth - an original decorative element, it decorates the premises and gives it sophistication. hides all the errors of the corner connection of the ceiling with the walls, and hides such a nuisance as cracks in the corners.

Installation of a ceiling cornice, at first glance, seems like a simple task. It seems, nothing complicated, cut at an angle 45 degrees, glued and you're done. But already at the first stage of work, it becomes clear that cutting the ceiling cornice correctly is not such an easy task, as it turned out.

Many, for the first time faced with the installation of decorative cornices, spoiled more than one ceiling plank. To prevent this from happening to you, you should study the question of how to cut off the corner of the ceiling plinth correctly. Let's take a look at a few ways you can quickly make the right cut.

Methods for cutting baguette corners

The problem with cutting the corner joint of decorative cornices is not that it is difficult to cut correctly at a 90 or 45 degree angle, but that most of the corners of the room are crooked, and do not have 90°. Therefore, you have to contrive to close the gaps with putty, liquid nails, silicone, or cut them manually.

Use of decorative corners

The easiest, but also the most expensive way to cut a ceiling cornice is to use decorative inserts. This is an expensive method because you have to buy additional elements.

But this option has some advantages:

  • saving time;
  • ease of installation.

Decorative inserts for their purpose are divided into:

  • Decorative connections for internal corners;
  • Decorative connections for external corners;
  • Docking decorative inserts.

Understanding how to cut off the corner of the baseboard for this method is not difficult. In this case, the ceiling cornice is cut strictly at an angle. 90°. And, as you can see from the photo below, it is glued right next to the previously glued corner.

Cutting the corner of the ceiling plinth with a miter box

The main tool for cutting ceiling cornices at an angle is a miter box. Its design is simple, it is a kind of tray made of wood, metal or plastic with special grooves that guide the hacksaw blade at a certain angle.

With a standard tool, you can cut the product at angles 45, 60, 90 degrees. When cutting ceiling fillets, trimming is mainly used in 45 and 90 degrees.

We start with the inner corners. To understand how to cut the corner of the ceiling plinth correctly, first, attach it to the inner corner of the room and visually determine the cut line. Please note that the bottom, the edge that is attached to the wall, always remains longer.

Next, we put the cornice in our carpentry fixture so that the edge that will be attached to the ceiling is at the bottom. We set its end at the angle we need, in this case 45 °, fix it, and cut off the unnecessary part with smooth movements.

In this way, we will get the correct cut of the ceiling cornice for the inner corner.

Note! If you stand facing the corner, you can divide it into right hand and left. So, the right inner corner is cut off from left to right, the left, on the contrary, from right to left.

Advice! Do not allow excessive pressure or sudden movements when cutting. This may damage the cut edge.

To cut the outer, you should carry out the same steps, only the direction of the cut will be different. When cutting, it should be noted that, unlike the inner corner, the edge that is glued to the ceiling should remain longer in the outer corner. Thus, for the right side, the mode is from right to left, and for the left, it is from left to right.

Note! The gap from the incorrect trimming of the ceiling cornices on the inner corner can be easily repaired, and repaired so that such a defect will not be visible. With an outer corner, such oversights cannot be made, since such a defect is practically impossible to correct. If the outer corner does not have 90°, then, first of all, cut the baguettes in the miter box, and then fit them directly on the spot with a drywall knife.

How to make the right cut without a miter box

So, we figured out how to cut a corner on a ceiling plinth using a miter box. But what to do if there was no such tool at hand, and you are reluctant to purchase it in order to glue a baguette in one room? There is an exit…

Consider how to properly cut the corner of the baseboard without using a guide tool.

To do this, we apply a ceiling fillet in the corner and draw a mark on the ceiling along the fillet line with a pencil. This must be done on both sides, left and right. As a result, on the ceiling we will have the intersection of two lines.

We transfer the intersection point to the fillets. After that, we put them on a flat surface, as well as in a miter box, and cut off the unnecessary part. When cutting off the fillet, consider the rules that are used when cutting ceiling dumbbells in a carpentry fixture.

In the same way, you can cut out the outer. You just need to draw lines on the wall. So we figured out how to cut a corner on a baseboard without using a miter box.

Note! In order to properly cut the ceiling fillet without using a miter box, it is very important not to make a mistake with the markup, and cut off the unnecessary part of the product strictly vertically. If you do not adhere to these rules, then when joining the ceiling moldings in the corner, a large gap may form. Advice! Use this method only when cutting corners on foam and polyurethane ceiling moldings. When using it on wooden or plastic baguettes, there is a high probability of spoiling the product.

Tools you will need to trim the baseboard

When cutting the cornice, one should take into account what material the cornice for the ceiling is made of. If the plinth is plastic, then you can’t do without a hacksaw for metal. Wooden plinth is cut with a small saw on wood. Well, if you need to glue a foam or polyurethane baguette for the ceiling, then a simple sharp knife is enough, a drywall or clerical knife is ideal for this.

In addition to cutting tools, you may also need such a tool:

  • miter box;
  • pencil;
  • roulette.

Note! Use only correct tools. The cutting tool must be sharp, with frequent and fine teeth. This will not only allow you to achieve a perfectly even and smooth cut, but also protect against possible damage to the product.

How to make a miter box yourself

Undoubtedly, this is a carpentry fixture, the most important tool if the question arises of how to properly cut the corner of the baseboard. And, of course, when cutting ceiling plinths from solid material can't do without it.

But what to do when you need it, but it's not there? There is an exit. Make it with your own hands.

Advice! If your plans include a large amount of work from the installation of ceiling plinths, do not be lazy and make this simple and indispensable tool yourself. Unfortunately, hardware stores mainly sell plastic tools, but that's not even the point, it's just that their quality leaves much to be desired. From my own experience I know that when cutting even foam plastic baguettes, such a tool cannot withstand more than one object. You can, of course, buy a professional device, but the price is not small either.

First of all, we determine the dimensions of the future tool. The length can be selected based on the building materials, and height and width, based on the dimensions of the products that will be cut on the tool.

If the plinth has a size of 10 cm, then, accordingly, the width with a height should be at least 10 cm. We, however, can recommend the following dimensions:

  • length - not less than 500 mm. This size of length allows you to set and fix the product with high quality.
  • width and height would be better to take 200 by 200 mm. With such dimensions, it will be possible to cut the largest ceiling plinths.

After we have decided on the dimensions, consider using the example of 500x200x200 mm, we have to prepare the main elements of the future miter box:

  • The base is a wide board that serves as a lining. The length and width of the miter box depend on the base, so it should be made with the planned length and width, in our example it is 500x200 mm. The recommended thickness is 25 mm. The base should have a strictly rectangular shape. The quality of the cut corner directly depends on this.
  • guide boards - their task is to guide the hacksaw blade according to the chosen angle. They must be harvested the same length as the base, the thickness is not so important here, 15 mm is quite enough, but calculate the width taking into account the thickness of the base, in our case 25 + 200 = 225 mm. Thus, we get the working area of the miter box 500x200x200 mm. Guide boards should also be rectangular.

So, we have prepared the material, let's start creating our tool, instructions:

  • using screws, we fasten the guide boards to the ends of the base.
  • using a protractor, we mark the corners; 45 and 90 degrees are enough to work with ceiling moldings.
  • using a square, draw lines from the marked points along the walls of the guide boards;
  • we cut along the marked lines.

In this way, from improvised material, you can make a high-quality carpentry fixture with your own hands.

The result of our actions - no difficulties

Conclusion

If you manage this and cut the ceiling moldings at the right angle, then spend installation work installing the skirting board will not be a difficult task for you. Good luck with your repair!

Any repair work always end with a finish. In rare cases, the interior of the room does without a ceiling plinth, its presence helps to hide the joints used for wall and ceiling surfaces finishing materials, in addition, do not forget about the decorative function that this element carries. Making the perimeter of the room, simply fixing it in a straight line, is easy. It is much more difficult to cut it correctly in the corners without damaging the material and spending a minimum of time and money.

Peculiarities

The ceiling plinth, like any other element of the interior, has its own characteristics, therefore, before purchasing it at a hardware store, you need to understand the materials from which this element is made and what difficulties you will encounter during the work.

Previously, the ceiling plinth had a different name - fillet. Translated from German means "notch" or "groove". The material for the manufacture of this decorative element was gypsum, poured into a prepared mold. The hardened gypsum element was fixed on the ceiling surface with a solution. To date, a gypsum ceiling plinth is very rare, its cost is high, and to mount it compared to modern analogues much more difficult.

Today, ceiling elements are produced from several types of materials in numerous configurations. They cost less than gypsum, but they look just as good. The cheapest ones are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This material, with a slight mechanical impact, is subject to deformation, the formation of irreparable dents or creases leads to a complete replacement of the element. In addition, all plinths made of PVC are electrostatic, dust accumulates on them very quickly.

Ceiling skirting boards made of polyurethane and polystyrene are among the most popular products. They gained their popularity due to an affordable price, a wide range of profile patterns, a variety of sizes (their width varies between 5–250 mm), as well as resistance to moisture. Polyurethane ceiling elements can be found in the design of many rooms, they look great in any interior. But, there are also disadvantages, the material does not tolerate temperature changes, it is prone to cracking, especially if installed above the stove.

The classic version of the ceiling plinth is a wood product. Wooden elements, unlike the listed types, are not installed on glue; self-tapping screws are used to fix them. Skirting boards from this material are decorated wooden houses or rooms whose style is dictated by the use of wooden elements.

Required Tools

Installing a ceiling plinth involves trimming the excess length and fitting it into the corners. Cutting requires tools. The choice of one or another type of tool depends on the material from which the plinth is made.

When working with wood and plastic, use an electric miter saw. Circumcision using this tool is accurate, fast and effortless, you just need to set the desired parameters and correctly lay the plinth. It will not be difficult to choose the appropriate tool, since manufacturers produce this tool in a wide price range.

But, with wood and plastic, you can also handle another well-known carpentry tool - a miter box paired with a hacksaw. This tool has the shape of a tray, it is made either from wood, or from plastic, or from metal. In two parallel sidewalls of the miter box, there are slots for a saw, for convenient cutting of the plinth at the desired angle. In a simple modification of the tool, you can cut the ceiling element at an angle of 45 or 90 degrees, and in more difficult variant You can also cut the plinth at an angle of 60 degrees.

A miter box and a hacksaw are cheaper than a miter saw, but they also have their drawback - this is the risk of material damage, especially if the quality of the purchased material leaves much to be desired. In addition, the miter box is more suitable for rooms with even walls and corners.

For a more even cut without the risk of damage to the material and without delamination of the structure, a jigsaw is suitable. It is easy to operate this tool, with its help you can set any direction and make the most accurate cuts. For materials that are lighter in weight and with a less durable structure, you can use an ordinary construction knife, the main thing is to pick up a copy with a sharp blade.

How to cut?

There are two main questions facing the installation of a ceiling plinth. How to properly cut a skirting board without gaps and with perfect joining in the corners, and what tools should be used to end up with a beautifully positioned ceiling element? In order to understand these issues, it is necessary to study all the methods and tools used in cutting the baseboard. Almost all methods and tools can be used to fit the skirting board in both internal and external corners.

outside corner

For outer corner The skirting board is cut at an angle of 45 degrees. First you need to check the evenness of the outer corner. If the wall surfaces are in contact with each other exactly at an angle of 90 degrees, then a miter box can be used to cut the plinth. In order to properly cut the outer corner strips, it is necessary to correctly position both parts of the skirting board.

First you need to outline the length of both halves, and only then cut them at an angle of 45 degrees. In order not to change the position of the saw and not to get confused with the location of the plinth halves, it is necessary to correctly position them in the miter box. The left half is laid face up, with the part adjacent to the ceiling to be closer to the center, and the second side adjacent to the wall should be pressed against the slotted sidewall. With the right half, everything is different: it must be laid in the miter box face down, and the location of the adjacent parts to the ceiling and wall will be similar here.

The bar placed in the miter box for an even cut must be pressed against the sidewall, placing it as close as possible to the slot. Holding the workpiece with your left hand, you need to carefully make a cut and set it aside. The second half of the plinth should be cut in the same way, remembering to turn it face down.

In the absence of a miter box, you can make its project on paper or cardboard. First, we draw a rectangle, inside which we draw two more parallel lines along the longer sides. On each side inside the lines, with the help of a protractor, we set aside the desired angle in different directions. Preparation and subsequent trimming of workpieces occurs in exactly the same way as using the tool itself.

This method is good because you can set aside an angle not strictly 45 or 90 degrees, but a little more or less, because not always the wall surfaces in the corners are directed to each other at an angle of 90 degrees, there are errors. Therefore, for a more accurate cut on the miter box depicted on paper, you can draw any angle using a protractor. The degree of the angle is first checked with a protractor, the resulting value is divided by 2. The resulting number will be the exact degree for the correct undercut.

If desired, the miter box can be built with your own hands. The easiest way is to make a tool out of wood, you just need to take three boards and put them together in the shape of the letter P. Then make marks on the side parts at different degrees, make cuts with a hacksaw. You can also make a miter box from two planks, after making cuts in them, or use a drawing with the right angles on paper to accurately determine the slope.

Even a table can be used as an improvised tool. The main thing is that it has angles by which one could navigate.

In order to properly cut external corners, you can do without auxiliary tools and paper drawings at all, you just need to design the future corner on the spot.

The plinth of the outer corner always protrudes into the room by an amount equal to its width, therefore, to determine the exact cut, it is necessary to make marks on the right and left halves of the plinth. Set aside the width value from the side adjacent to the wall. Then, from the resulting point, draw a line to the upper corner of the half. The resulting triangle must be cut out, and the halves joined in place for a preview.

Interior

To join the halves of the plinth in the inner corner, you can use the same methods and tools. The location of the halves in the miter box when cutting for the inner corner is identical to the location of the parts used to join the outer corner. But, you can not turn the right half of the plinth over for the notch, but only change the inclination of the notch (use a different slot). In any case, on the left side of the plinth the line will be slanted to the left of the corner point located on the side adjacent to the wall, and on the right side of the plinth the line will be slanted to the right of a similarly located point.

With perfectly flat corner surfaces, an ordinary square can be used instead of a miter box. To do this, you need to press the half of the plinth to the inner corner of the ruler and cut off the unnecessary part at an angle of 45 degrees. It is not difficult to do this, since the side of the ruler and part of the plinth form a total of 90 degrees, the notch line divides this angle in half, which means that part of the plinth will be cut at an angle of 45 degrees.

For wooden and plastic skirting boards making an incision on the spot will not work, you can only mark the surface of the plinth, and make the cut itself according to the mark later, using a hacksaw or saw.

In order to properly cut and then join the halves of the plinth for the inner corner, you need to measure on the spot with a simple pencil. The right workpiece must be attached to the corner on the corresponding side until it stops. On the ceiling surface along the half, draw a line and remove the workpiece to the side. We do the same with the other half.

At the intersection of the two lines, a point has formed, with which you need to make marks on each half of the plinth. To put an end, you need to attach a half to the docking point. From the resulting point, you need to draw a line to the bottom corner of the half, as a result you get a small triangle, which you need to cut off.

The halves cut in this way must be adjusted to each other; with inaccurately cut edges, the sections can be leveled with a knife if the material of manufacture is foam.

To eliminate small flaws on the cut of wooden or polyurethane skirting boards, you will have to use a file. Only after the incisions have completely coincided can you begin to fix the halves.

Sometimes it's not possible to achieve a perfect fit, but there is always a way out. To eliminate cracks, you can use putty. The choice of putty depends on the material of the plinth. In order to eliminate inaccuracies in cutting skirting boards, you need to practice using small pieces of skirting boards for this or cut off the strips a little longer than the intended size. Such a margin will make it possible to make a new undercut in case it was made with the wrong slope or the material at the cut point was deformed.

- This is the design of the corner. It is necessary to join the planks in such places very carefully, otherwise appearance decor will be hopelessly damaged. Of course, you can use quite aesthetic special corner elements.

However, naturally joined planks usually look more harmonious. And in this case, you won’t have to spend money on additional details. Therefore, later in the article we will consider how to cut the corner of the ceiling plinth correctly and how to process the seam.

Trimming the ceiling plinth

Ceiling skirting boards are made from the most different materials- foam, polyurethane foam, plastic, wood. To trim them, tools available in every home can be used. Styrofoam strips are cut with scissors or a knife. The wooden plinth is cut with a hacksaw for wood. How to cut a plastic plinth is also not a question. You can cut it with an ordinary hacksaw for metal.

Trimming a wooden plinth is done with a regular hacksaw

What is a chair?

For accurate and most accurate trimming of ceiling plinths, a special tool is usually used - a miter box. It represents a tray knocked down from three boards. There are slots in its walls located at a certain angle to the axis (45, 60 and 90g, etc.). They are designed to guide the hacksaw blade when cutting. You can buy a miter box for a ceiling plinth at a hardware store.

Trimming the planks at an angle of 45 degrees is done in a miter box

Trimming the ceiling plinth in the miter box

Trimming in the miter box is performed as follows:

  1. The right strip is placed in the tray from left to right with the wrong side to the bottom (the part that will later adjoin the ceiling). Part of the junction with the wall should be leaning against the side board of the tray (closest to you);
  2. The bar is pressed tightly against the tool and cut through the slot.

How to make a corner of a ceiling plinth

Important: When trimming, it should be remembered that when making an internal corner, the edge of the plinth adjacent to the wall should be longer than that adjacent to the ceiling. When finishing the same external - vice versa.
  1. A second ceiling strip is inserted into the tray from right to left and cut off;
  2. Finished planks are attached to the corner and the joint is adjusted with a knife;

Planks are attached to the corner, and adjustments are made

  1. How to join the corners of the ceiling plinth? You can do this from a ladder right on the wall. But this is not very convenient, so experts advise combining polyurethane and foam plastic elements and gluing them with each other on the floor with special glue for joints.

The corner is best glued before installing the skirting board on the walls.

What to do if there is no miter box?

So we figured out how to saw down a ceiling plinth (the video above may help someone figure it out better) using a miter box. But what to do if this tool is not at hand? In fact, it is possible to adjust the slats evenly without using it. There are two main ways to solve this problem: marking directly on the wall and making an imitation of a miter box.

In the first case, the procedure is as follows:

  1. The left band is pressed tightly against the ceiling;
  2. With a pencil, line 1 is drawn directly on the ceiling along its upper edge;

How to cut a ceiling plinth without a miter box. Carrying out the first line

  1. Next, the right ceiling element is attached to the ceiling and line 2 is drawn;
  2. A mark is placed at the intersection of the edge of the right plank with line 1;

The second line is drawn and a mark is placed on the plinth

  1. Further, the left element is again attached to the ceiling;
  2. A mark is also placed at the intersection of its upper edge with line 2;
  3. Now on each strip you need to connect the marks with the end of the bottom edge of the plinth;

Then, along the resulting line, the plinth is actually cut at an angle.

Without the use of a tray, the strips mounted in the corner can be quite neat

In order to cut an even angle, you can also use the imitation of a miter box:

  1. On a smooth plywood sheet, we draw two strictly parallel lines;
  2. We put a point on one of them and, using a protractor, connect it to the second line at an angle of exactly 45 degrees (draw to the left);
  3. At a distance of 10 centimeters to the left of the first point, we put the second;
  4. We connect it with the second line at an angle of 45 degrees (draw to the right).

How to cut a corner of a ceiling plinth using an imitation of a miter box

The improvised miter box is ready. Now it remains to attach the right ceiling element (wrong side) on the right with the lower edge to the line closest to you and cut it off. The same with the left bar (only you need to apply it on the left).

Advice: You can cut polystyrene strips with a knife. However, be sure to sharpen it properly. Otherwise, the material at the ends will simply crumble.

How to connect planks if the angle is uneven

In city apartments, and especially in old ones, the walls are rarely even. Therefore, the angles between them are often not straight at all. How to cut down the ceiling plinth in this case?

In fact, it is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. You just need to measure the angle. To do this, you can use a special tool Malku or just make a template out of paper and use a protractor.

An uneven angle can be measured using a small protractor

We divide the resulting angle by two, draw the corresponding "miter box" on plywood and cut the strips. Next, you just need to connect them with glue.

How to clean up corners

How to cut the corner of the ceiling plinth, we found out. Now let's see how to finish the joints. How to cover the joint in the corner? In the event that a small gap remains here, the sealing can be done with a regular putty to match the color of the plinth. Joints can also be passed with silicone sealant.

The gap between the planks in the inner corner can be puttied with putty

Important: Only the inner corner can be sealed with putty or sealant. The outer should be adjusted as carefully as possible. It will simply be impossible to remove even a small gap in the future imperceptibly here. Especially when the plinth is wide.

Corner pieces for ceiling plinth

Trimming ceiling strips when using corner elements (special connectors) is also usually performed in a miter box. How to cut the planks in this case? Everything is very simple - the cutting is performed at a right angle. In the absence of a tray, you can use a regular protractor or square. Corner elements (photo):

When using corner elements, strips are trimmed at right angles.

How to trim the floor plinth

Floor skirting boards can be made from PVC, polyurethane, wood, or MDF. Just as in the case of a ceiling plinth, they need to be sawn, depending on the material, with an ordinary hacksaw (wooden) or a hacksaw for metal (plastic).

Now you know how to cut down a ceiling plinth. Next, let's see how the fitting and trimming of the floor is performed. How to use the chair in this case? When cutting a floor plinth, the procedure is approximately the same as when cutting a ceiling plinth. For inside corner:

  1. We take the first strip and put it in the tray from right to left so that it lies in it in the same way as on the floor. We lean it against the far wall of the instrument as against a wall;

The strip is inserted into the tray and pressed tightly

  1. We trim the unnecessary piece from the left end at an angle through hole 1 (figure below);
  2. We insert the second strip from left to right in exactly the same position and cut it from the right end through hole 2.

How to cut the plinth in the corner if it is external:

  1. We insert the first strip into the tray in the same way as for the inner corner (from right to left);
  2. We cut it from the left end through hole 2;
  3. We insert the second bar from left to right and cut its right end through slot 1.

How to cut a ceiling plinth for external and internal corners

Advice: An end at an angle of 45g should be done not only in order to cut elements in the corners, but also to make joints on the wall itself. In this case, the connections will not be as noticeable.

Thus, we have considered in the most detailed way how to cut the baseboard in the corners. The procedure is not as complicated as it might seem at first glance. Starting pruning in a miter box or using its imitation, you will see for yourself.

When installing a floor plinth, the most difficult task is finishing the corner sections. Skirting strips will be cut into separate elements according to the perimeter of the room. Experts recommend that you first draw a visual installation diagram on paper, paint all the dimensions, and also schematically depict how to make the corners of the floor plinth. With such a hint at hand Finishing work will move much faster.

How to make the inner corner of the floor plinth

Although the rooms are usually a regular rectangle, their corners may not correspond to 90º. As a rule, developers and repairers can only dream of ideal angular convergence of walls.

How to cut the corners of the floor plinth, if you are still lucky, and your apartment has the right angles, then in order to cut the plinth strips, you need to follow these steps:

  • the plinth blank must be placed in the miter box (a special construction tool for cutting planks at a certain angle);

The miter box itself (good) is possible. Before ordering, make sure that the width of your skirting board matches the maximum width of the miter box!

  • on the side panel of the tool we look for a mark of 45º, insert a hacksaw into the corresponding groove, saw off the excess part of the workpiece;
  • further, the cut edge is carefully processed with sandpaper.

Important! When cutting a plinth strip, it is necessary to take into account its location (placement side). It is recommended to cut with some increase, which will make it possible to further fit the skirting board as tightly as possible. If a wooden plinth is used, the joint is additionally treated with a special putty for painting.

What to do if the angle of the converging walls is uneven?

Helps in this situation gypsum plaster and a wide ribbon-serpyanka.

  • At the junction of adjacent walls, a small amount of gypsum mortar is applied approximately 10 cm to each side.
  • Next, a reinforcing tape is applied to the corner, gently pressed down with a wooden block.

  • The corner is given the correct shape, excess mortar is removed with a spatula.

Important! You need to work with a spatula very carefully so as not to disturb the position of the sickle tape, but also not slowly so that the plaster does not dry out

How to join the outer corners of the floor plinth

When the outside corners of the room are 90º, the procedure for cutting the skirting board is the same as for inside corner joints. It is important when cutting to remember the future side of the plank placement. The ends of the joints of plastic plinths are closed with special plugs. If the cutting of the planks was not done very well, you can correct such a defect with mastic, and then cover it with a plug.

How to join the corners of the floor plinth if they do not have 90º:

  • first we apply the skirting board to the first wall;
  • draw with a pencil (marker) all the borders;
  • we perform similar actions with the second plinth attached to another wall;
  • when marking, you should get a rhombus, as in the situation with the internal corner connection, only it will be located outside, respectively, the diagonal is the cutting line of the blanks;
  • after cutting, we clean the ends of the planks with sandpaper;
  • then we install the plinth, cover the corner joints with a plug (for plastic products). The joints of wooden skirting boards are covered with putty for painting.

After completing the fastening of the plinth strips in the corner sections, they can be finally fixed around the entire perimeter of the room using self-tapping screws, liquid nails, finishing nails or a special adhesive.

Docking plinth at non-standard angles

If you need to finish a rounded corner, then the skirting board needs to be cut into 4-5 separate parts, and use special plugs to connect them. Fixing is done with putty or a special adhesive composition.

How to saw down the corners of the plinth of the floor inner-outer corner:

  • we apply the first half of the plank to the wall, draw its border with a pencil (marker) on the basis of the floor;
  • then we apply the next half of the bar, draw two points: the first is the intersection with the border of the previous bar, the second is with the wall;
  • then we connect these points together, perform a cut;
  • the ends of the cuts of plastic samples are closed with plugs, the wooden ones are pre-cleaned, then smeared with putty.

How to cut a corner of a floor plinth without a miter box

Interior corner trim

  • a profile is placed on the installation site, it must be rested against the adjacent wall;
  • a control line is drawn on the sexual basis with a pencil (marker);
  • similar actions are performed near another wall;
  • the intersection point of two control segments is the lower cut, the junction in the corner is the upper cut.

Outside corner finishing

  • in this case, similar actions are performed, only the profile is displayed around the corner of the converging walls;
  • where the control segments intersect - the lower cut, the upper cut - the corner face.

Important! For edging the plinth, you must try to hold the hacksaw when cutting at 45º.
