How to install plastic window sills and slopes with your own hands. Do-it-yourself window sill installation - what could be easier Do-it-yourself window sill made of plastic

I want to teach you - .

Why do I prefer plastic window sills?

This is because wooden ones, although they are environmentally friendly, are very picky in terms of care: be afraid of all kinds of detergents, require periodic staining, afraid high humidity and fire, and their price is disproportionately higher.
Unlike wooden window sills, PVC window sills have a number of advantages:

  • Due to its design of several air chambers, the plastic window sill is an excellent heat insulator
  • PVC window sill does not require painting, it also does not rot, is not afraid of mold, etc.
  • Plastic itself is a very durable material.
  • Not afraid of temperature changes, resistant to sunshine, is not afraid of moisture and washes well ...
  • Very lightweight yet durable
  • Optimal price - quality

In order to correctly install the window sill on plastic windows you don't have to be a super master. The work is not very difficult and with a little hand-knocking everything should work out for you. Read the article carefully - in it I will try to cover all aspects as much as possible.

How to choose a plastic window sill

1. Window sill covered with PVC film

Most cheap option. It does not tolerate temperature changes very well, it quickly loses its appearance, as it quickly absorbs dirt and dust. Its only advantage is its cheapness.

Such window sills are obtained by pressing paper sheets impregnated with melamine resins. Very resistant to temperatures and chemicals.

3. EPL-coated plastic

Window sills with EPL coating are a premium class. Gorgeous specifications, special antistatic coating, huge range design solutions etc. etc.

Required Tool

  1. The window sill of the required width
  2. plastic plugs for it
  3. Plastic wedges or bars, if not available
  4. Metal saw or electric jigsaw
  5. Mounting foam
  6. Building level
  7. Roulette
  8. Well, preferably a primer

Preparing for installation

Which window sill to choose for plastic windows We have decided and we can proceed directly to the preparation. If, after dismantling the old window sill, side grooves remain, then this is good, but if there are none, then you will have to cut them out. We use a puncher or a chisel for this. The depth of the groove should be about 6 cm on each side.

The next step is garbage collection. Using a brush, clean the work surface as much as possible.

Then we prime. The primer is necessary to increase the adhesion of the mounting foam, and we will also exclude fine dust from the work.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO KNOW!

Friends, if during priming you stained the window, then you should immediately remove the remnants of the primer, because traces may remain in the future.

The final stage of preparation is to control the gap between the window sill sheet and the base. The distance should not exceed 4 cm, as this is the optimal thickness for the polymerization of the mounting foam. Exceeding the allowable limits will lead to the appearance of "shells" and voids in the frozen foam, which is not good: (If you have a greater distance, then you need to build up the base with plaster or other methods - it all depends on the thickness :)

How to install a window sill on a plastic window

So, preparatory work completed and you can proceed directly to the installation.

Installing a window sill mounting foam

Competent measurement is very important - whether it be a window sill, or.

Do not forget about entering the wall so that there are no gaps under the future slopes.

After the window sill is cut to size, it is necessary to put several wooden bars on the base perpendicular to the window (masters usually use plastic slats). This creates stiffeners that take on the main load. The optimal distance between the substrates is 40 cm, but may vary depending on individual characteristics.

The bars should be set with a slight slope towards the room so that the accumulated condensate does not cause mold.

Distance between wooden slats foams up.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO KNOW

Friends, so that the foam does not “crush” the window sill, I use foam with the lowest expansion coefficient. For example - Titan 65.

Then you must immediately measure and put plastic side plugs on the window sill. You can fix them with building glue.

We drive the structure ready for installation into the support profile and install it on the load on the structure so that the mounting foam does not lift it up. You can use multiple 5 liter bottles with water.

Let the window sill stand for a day until the foam is completely set.

Then acrylic or silicone sealant close the gaps.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO KNOW

Friends, almost missed important point. In order to create a circular circulation of air in the room, so that the windows have enough heat and frost does not form on them, it is necessary correctly install the plastic window sill above the battery. The inside of which should not completely cover the heating devices. Heated air should rise from the battery up the window without hindrance. This creates a circular circulation of air in the room.

Installation of a window sill on a cement-sand mortar

Friends, if the width of your future window sill exceeds 600 mm, then I do not advise you to mount it on foam, since under increased loads there is a high probability of deflection, which is not very pleasant - especially if the repair is already over. In such cases, a cement-sand mixture prepared in a ratio of 1 to 3 will help you, where 1 is cement and 3 is sand. You need to knead the mixture immediately before installing the window sill.

Unlike polyurethane foam, the interaction between the solution and the plastic is not very good and slippage is possible. To avoid this, there is one tricky trick - self-tapping screws are screwed onto the inside of the window sill. It is advisable to make three rows with a distance of 1.5 cm. The head of the screws should stick out by 1 cm.

We apply the finished solution to the base and install the prepared window sill in the supply profile.

Getting to the right level.

The remains of the solution under the windowsill are removed with a spatula.

We give the window sill a two-day “rest” and you can proceed with the installation of slopes.

The installation of a window sill usually completes the installation of a window. It is impossible to exclude this element from the window construction. First, it is an element of decor. Agree that a window opening without a window sill will look, to put it mildly, ridiculous. Secondly, this additional element also performs a protective function, taking on temperature fluctuations and mechanical loads. Replacing old windows with more practical PVC structures is carried out by specialists. Usually, the range of services provided includes the installation of a window sill and. However, installing a plastic window sill with your own hands is not particularly difficult, so you can save money by doing the installation yourself. Let us immediately clarify that this procedure carried out only after the replacement of the window. Consider all the steps installation work, including sizing.

Training

The installation procedure begins with the dismantling of the old structure. This is very important nuance: PVC designs never install with wooden frames. If you ordered the installation of a window in a specialized company, then this stage will be performed by installers. Specialists dismantle old frames and. You just have to prepare the window opening. To do this, it is necessary to clean the lower part of the window opening from the remnants of construction debris, remove the remnants of the plaster and make grooves in the side walls. This is done to securely fix the plastic structure.

Please note that it is not always advisable to make grooves. Usually this procedure is performed if the width of the panel will go beyond the window opening.

Then you need to foam all the cracks that remained after installing the window, level the lower part of the window opening and prime the surface. These precautions will help to eliminate drafts, respectively, to keep warm in the apartment.

measurements

It will not be possible to purchase a product of suitable sizes: window sills are adjusted individually according to the parameters of the window opening. Therefore, the plastic panel will have to be cut by yourself. Fitting the window sill with your own hands to the size of the window is not difficult: plastic can be easily processed and cut with any sharp tool. At this stage, it is important to correctly calculate the length and width of the structure.

HELPFUL INFORMATION: How to choose the right blinds for plastic windows: by room and size (40 photos)

First, we measure the width of the window opening. To the resulting figure you need to add 1.5-2 centimeters on each side. Usually the edges are retracted into grooves or closed with slopes. The width of the window sill depends on your desire. If the structure does not extend beyond the wall, then 2 centimeters must be added to the width of the window opening: this part will go under the window. If you plan to install a protruding structure, then ideally the window sill should reach the middle of the radiator.

Close heating system highly not recommended. Warm air will not rise to the windows, as a result, condensation and frost will form in winter. Accordingly, the life of PVC windows will be significantly reduced. If you still decide to close the batteries completely, you need to make ventilation holes in the windowsill.

The thickness of the window sill does not play a special role: this element does not have high mechanical loads. The exceptions are situations where pvc panel installed on the entire wall, combining two windows. In this case, the thickness of the window sill should have a maximum value of 22 millimeters. Do not forget to equip the window sill with end caps.

Installation process

How to install a window sill? It is enough to responsibly approach the installation procedure and follow the instructions given. Here is a step by step installation diagram:

  • The dimensions of the structure are already adjusted to the parameters of the window opening. To make sure that the calculations are correct, the window sill is installed in place. If the panel does not fit, you need to remove the element and clean the end and front sides with a knife.
  • Please note that window sills are not laid on concrete or brick base. Therefore, the installation of the panel involves the use of wooden or plastic supports. The recommended width of such substrates is at least 50 millimeters, the length is less than the width of the panel. The thickness of the supports is selected individually, the main thing is that the window sill clearly fits into the groove under the window. It is worth noting that the supports are installed only on a leveled surface in order to avoid distortions of the structure. The distance between such substrates: 40-50 centimeters. You can check the correct installation of the supports by trimming the window sill: a piece should fit snugly into the groove between the support and the bottom of the window.

HELPFUL INFORMATION: Drywall slopes: do-it-yourself installation

  • The voids between the supports are usually eliminated. To do this, use mounting foam or mineral wool. In the second case, the substrates must firmly adhere to the base of the window opening, so the supports are fixed with silicone glue. It is recommended to degrease the surface before using this material.
  • We proceed to the installation of the PVC structure. Before starting work, you need to remove the protective film from the side of the window and install the end caps. Then we install the window sill in place.

Please note that the element should fit into the groove tightly enough, but it is not necessary to apply excessive force. On the sides of the structure, you need to leave a small gap (about 5 millimeters), this is a precautionary measure that will help prevent deformation of the window sill. For this, substrates of appropriate thickness are installed from the sides. These beacons then need to be removed, and the gaps sealed with sealant.

  • Align the panel in a horizontal plane with light taps. We check the position of the window sill by level.

  • The installation is almost complete. Now you need to foam the free space under the window. Please note that the mounting foam increases in volume during the drying process, so you need to install special spacers. If this is not done, the structure will be skewed and subsequently replaced. Spacers are made of wooden blocks, set one in the center and two on the sides. The fixatives are removed after the foam has completely solidified (about a day), the excess of which is removed with a knife.

  • Then the slopes are installed and the remaining gaps are closed. For this, a sealant is usually used. The edges of the window sill adjacent to the walls are covered with mounting tape.
  • After completion of all installation work, the protective film is removed from the window sill.

Don't repeat mistakes

Remember: a violation of the installation technology will invariably entail the replacement of the window sill.

So let's take a few useful tips which will help to avoid unpleasant consequences:

  1. Installation is carried out immediately after the replacement of the window. If you first put the slopes and plaster the walls, the risk of damaging the surface increases. Accordingly, all the work done will go down the drain.
  2. Wide and long panels need to be additionally fixed. This is usually done if the window sill exceeds the width of the window space by a third. Brackets are used for fastening.
  3. Carefully maintain the size and be sure to use the building level.
  4. For better adhesion of surfaces, the window opening must be moistened with water.
  5. Do not use too much mounting foam. When foaming the window sill space, it is recommended to leave small gaps.

Many people want to have modern metal-plastic windows, and many have already installed them. But in addition to installing a double-glazed window, you need to take care of finishing the opening. It is decorated with wood, stone, or simply plastered on a concrete surface. by the very the right option is the lining of the opening with plastic and the installation of a PVC window sill. We will tell you what advantages PVC finishing elements have, consider how to install plastic window sills and give detailed instructions by installation.

Advantages and disadvantages of PVC window sills

PVC window sills are very popular due to their durability and moisture resistance.

The popularity of plastic products is due to the fact that they have a lot of advantages over finishing elements made from other materials. The advantages of plastic window sills include:

  • attractive appearance;
  • ease of cleaning from dust and dirt;
  • long service life;
  • high strength, due to the presence of stiffeners;
  • harmlessness to health (PVC window sills are made from environmentally friendly and non-toxic materials);
  • high moisture resistance.

In addition, when fixing the product, mounting foam is used, which prevents the penetration of dampness into the room and, as a result, the appearance of mold in the house.

Plastic window sills also have disadvantages, but there are very few of them. So, PVC plates are prone to scratches in case of careless operation. Hot objects should also not be placed on them - this can lead to deformation of the surface and loss of beautiful view finishing element.

Installation methods

Installing a window sill with wooden linings is time-consuming, but this method is the most reliable.

There are several methods for installing PVC products. Let's consider each of them.

  • The first method, the oldest, involves fixing the element with a special composition. Nowadays, this method is used extremely rarely, as more convenient and reliable ones have appeared.
  • The fastest installation of the window sill is carried out using self-tapping screws. First, holes are drilled in the window frame, into which the hardware is screwed. The junction is processed acrylic sealant, after which the edge of the window sill is brought under the double-glazed window and fixed with self-tapping screws. To give maximum rigidity to the slab, special linings are placed under it and the resulting place is blown out with mounting foam.
  • The next method involves the installation of PVC window sills using spring clips. These fasteners are screwed to the substitution profile of the product with self-tapping screws. After that, the plate is mounted in the groove formed between the window frame and the bracket, and the product is installed.
  • In the last version of the installation of plastic window sills, no fasteners (self-tapping screws and staples) are used. This is the most time-consuming method, but also the most reliable. Its meaning is that the wedges are driven under the plate until its edge is pressed against the frame as tightly as possible.

Each method has its pros and cons. For example, it is undesirable to install a window sill using self-tapping screws near the opening sash. Installation options for PVC window sills differ only in the way the product is fixed under the frame. The remaining stages of work here are absolutely identical.

What will be required

Before proceeding to the installation, it is necessary to prepare materials and tools. As the first rule of professional builders says, the quality of work largely depends on the class of tools used. So, with good fixtures, it is easier to work, and their service life is longer. Especially when you consider that tools are likely to be needed in the future, since window sills are often installed under each window of a house or apartment. So, for work you may need the following materials and tools:

  • PVC window sill;
  • electric jigsaw, grinder;
  • mounting foam cylinder and a special gun;
  • building level, measuring tape, pencil;
  • self-tapping screws or staples (depending on the chosen method of installing the window sill);
  • wooden wedges (thin boards and the like);
  • chisel and hammer;
  • stationery knife;
  • spatula and primer.

Preparatory work

Taking measurements

The product should protrude no more than 8 cm

To qualitatively install any window sill, you must first take measurements. This moment is extremely important, because both the appearance and the strength of the future structure depend on it. Here, in addition to the properties and characteristics of a PVC product, many additional parameters should also be taken into account. For example, there must be a certain distance between the battery and the window sill. Otherwise, air circulation will be disturbed, which will lead to a deterioration in the microclimate in the room.

When taking measurements, it is worth remembering that the length of the installed plate should be slightly greater than the distance between the side slopes. The fact is that the product is inserted into the grooves made with a depth of 2-3 cm. As a rule, the window sill is mounted above the battery, so the size of the front protrusion of the plate should be no more than 8 cm. If this figure is greater, then the PVC plate will not allow hot air to rise from the radiator to the window. And this will lead to the formation of moisture. As for the vertical distance between the battery and the window sill, it should be more than 10 cm.

Due to the fact that the product is installed directly under the window, modern models are equipped with a special profile with the possibility of fixing the ebb.

Trimming the window sill

In addition to a jigsaw, you can use a grinder or a special hacksaw to trim a plastic window sill.

In accordance with the measurements, cut the blank of the window sill of the required width and length. It is advisable to cut PVC products with a grinder. Using this power tool will allow you to achieve perfectly smooth edges. In the absence of a turbine, you can use a jigsaw. Less often, pruning of a PVC window sill is carried out with a hacksaw for plastic. But you need to cut it very carefully.

Do not apply too much pressure to the saw, as this may cause chips and cracks on the product.

When working with plastic, you need to remember the safety measures. This is a rather fragile material, so when it is intensively cut, small particles can fly out. Wear safety goggles and work gloves.

Window opening preparation

To make grooves for the window sill, use a chisel and a hammer

Immediately before installing the window sill, it is necessary to prepare the place of its installation. At this stage, grooves are made in the side slopes with a chisel and a hammer. After that, the installation site of the product is cleaned of debris and primed. Next, special spacers or wedges are attached to the window frame. They can be fixed with a plaster solution. Stands are used to set the slab at the correct level and at the required inclination. At the same time, keep in mind that the plate should be located at an angle of 1-2 degrees towards the room. So water from watering plants or condensate will drain, and not collect under the stove. Then attach the window sill and check how tight and even it becomes. Trim the edges if necessary.

Apply a layer of moisture-resistant primer to the installation site of the window sill

Important: If you find any gaps in the window opening, they must be blown out with mounting foam.

Assembly and installation instructions

Use a special gun to blow the mounting foam

As noted earlier, the fixation of the product can be performed in several ways. We will consider the latter - using wooden spacers and polyurethane foam, as it is the most reliable and very popular lately among people doing DIY repairs. The procedure is as follows:

  1. We insert the window sill into the prepared place. At the same time, we use the building level and wooden beacons, which we have in increments of no more than 80 cm.
  2. At the front end, we install supporting wooden blocks under the slab. The distance between them is no more than 50 cm. In this case, the bearing elements should not go beyond the plane of the wall. The distance from the blocks to the side slopes is 10 cm.
  3. Re-check the angle of inclination of the window sill with a level. If it does not correspond to the previously specified value, then adjust the pads in thickness.
  4. We blow out the hole between the slab and the concrete surface with mounting foam. But not completely, but only to fix the product.
  5. We evenly place the weight on the plate. This will prevent the foam from lifting the sill. It is important here not to overload the structure, as its surface may be deformed. Often, 3-4 tanks of water with a volume of 5 liters are used as cargo.
  6. We blow out all the free space under the windowsill with mounting foam. Use a special gun so that the sealant does not splatter on the sides and does not get on clothes.
  7. After that, we leave the window sill alone for 2-3 days so that the foam completely hardens. Cut off excess binder with a clerical knife.
  8. In case of subsequent detection of cracks under the slab, treat them with acrylic sealant.
  9. At the final stage, plugs are installed on the ends of the window sill. To do this, use glue for PVC products. At the end, it remains only to remove the protective film from the product.
  10. Important: The window sill should fit tightly with the window frame, and the gap between the slab and the walls should not exceed 4 mm. The “ears” of the product (the part protruding beyond the internal slopes) should also be pressed tightly against the wall.

    Video instruction for installing a PVC window sill

    Installation of plastic window sills is not an easy job that requires appropriate knowledge and skills. When installing such products with your own hands, be careful and follow the above rules, because the price of a damaged PVC plate is much higher than the cost of its installation.

If the house has windows, then there must be window sills. A well-installed window sill performs not only a decorative function - it serves as a protection against the penetration of cold into the room.

Structures can be wood, granite or PVC. Do-it-yourself installation of a PVC window sill can be carried out only after studying the installation technology of PVC products.
  1. Why PVC window sills
  2. Preparing the installation site
  3. General recommendations

Why PVC window sills

  1. Unlike wooden window sills, PVC products perfectly resist sudden changes in temperature.
  2. High impact and scratch resistance.
  3. Does not require anti-corrosion coating.
  4. The presence of chambers provides good thermal insulation qualities.
  5. Installation of the window sill can be carried out independently.
  6. Easy care during operation.
  7. PVC perfectly resists prolonged exposure to moisture.
  8. Possibility of installation both for plastic, and for wooden structures windows.

Selection of tools and material

High-quality installation of a plastic window sill with your own hands can only be carried out with right choice source material, tools and exact implementation of installation recommendations.

During installation you will need:

  • Polyvinyl chloride window sill and plugs on its ends.
  • Corner, building level, marker and tape measure.
  • Silicone sealant and polyurethane foam.
  • Electric jigsaw, puncher and screwdriver.
  • cement mortar.
  • Stationery knife and clean rags.

Preparing the installation site

A new PVC window sill will look good if you carefully prepare the place for its installation. This is especially important when replacing old windows. After dismantling the outdated window opening, the presence of chips and cracks around the window is checked. If necessary, the masonry should be restored. Remove small debris and dust, and apply a primer to the base.

Important! Before installing a PVC window sill, check the quality of installation window frame to avoid the penetration of cold into the house.

When the new window is installed and the base for mounting the PVC window sill is carefully prepared, you can start measuring the space and preparing the window sill for installation. Before installing a plastic window sill, it will have to be cut to the width and length of the opening.

The width of the window sill can be the same as the slopes or a little more. In length, it is necessary to cut the product 4-6 cm more than the distance between the slopes. In the vertical slopes, two horizontal cuts are made, into which the window sill will be inserted.

Plastic window sills can be installed in three ways:

  • Mounting foam or special glue is used to fix the product.
  • The window sill is fixed with brackets.
  • To install a PVC window sill, a profile is used.

Instructions for working with glue

Step #1. On the side slopes of the window opening, cut two notches at the same level, and clean the window sill well and, if necessary, deepen.

Step #2. Before installing a new window sill, dry and coat the surfaces with a primer.

Step #3. Insert the window sill cut to size into the grooves under the window frame.

Step number 4. Wedged the window sill between the frame and the window opening with wooden wedges. Insert wedges in the middle and edges of the window sill.

Important! There should be no gaps between the window sill and the window frame.

Step number 5. Between the window sill and the window opening, install linings so that the surface of the structure is horizontal.

Step number 6. Pump mounting foam with a small coefficient of expansion between the PVC window sill and the window opening. To prevent the window sill from rising, lay a load on top of it.

Step number 7. Install plugs on the side cuts.

Important! A window sill that strongly protrudes beyond the wall must be strengthened by applying cement mortar.

Step number 8. Remove the load 12 hours after foaming the window sill.

Rigid installation instructions

Such installation of a PVC window sill is considered the most durable and durable.

Step #1. Make the marking and trimming of the window sill, as in the previous installation option.

Step #2. On a previously cleaned window opening, perform a cement screed. Adjust the height of the screed so that the new window sill fits exactly into the grooves of the window frame.

Step #3. To fix the product, use liquid plastic or silicone glue.

Instructions for working with brackets

Step #1. A support profile is installed under the window and securely fastened. At least 4 brackets are mounted in it with self-tapping screws. The maximum distance between the brackets is 25 cm. Fastening is best done with self-tapping screws with press washers.

Step #2. The PVC window sill is being installed on the brackets. You should hear a click when properly seated.

Step #3. The window sill is connected to the frame with screws.

Step number 4. A wide window sill is additionally fixed to the cement mortar.

Instructions for working with a metal profile

Step #1. In a horizontal position, attach a L or U-shaped metal profile to the window sill block.

Step #2. Install the cut window sill into the groove and secure with self-tapping screws.

Step #3. Blow out the free space between the new structure and the base with foam.

Step number 4. Additionally, the structure can be strengthened with a cement mortar.

  1. While working with a perforator, protect your hands with gloves and your eyes with special glasses.
  2. Mounting foam adheres much better to a wetted surface. Before foaming, moisten the surface of the base and the back of the window sill with a spray bottle.
  3. Sealant is best pumped in strips, leaving space between them.
  4. The protrusion of the window sill beyond the window slope line should not be more than 60 mm, and the length should exceed the width of the window opening by a maximum of 15 cm.
  5. If the window sill must be strictly horizontal along the length, then it is necessary to make a slight slope from the window along the width. The slope should not exceed 3%.
  6. When installing window sills, it is necessary to take into account the location heating appliances so as not to worsen the microclimate of the room.
  7. The rigidity of the PVC window sill increases significantly when using wooden substrate. All bars must be the same size. The length of the bar is equal to the distance from the window frame to the edge of the opening. The distance between the fixed planks is 25 cm.
  8. After complete hardening of the foam, its excess is removed. The wall under the windowsill is puttied and the decorating begins.

After reading the article to the end, you learned how to properly install a PVC window sill in several ways. Each mounting method has its advantages and disadvantages. With the right approach and high-quality performance, installing a new window sill is not as difficult as it seems at first glance.
