Roll insulation for walls: choosing the best thermal insulation. Types of rolled heaters and distinctive features of each of them Overview of rolled heaters

Thermal insulation of walls is a task that should be approached with special attention, because the materials for sheathing have different properties and "principle of operation", and on the market it is very often presented that no matter what insulator you take, there will be "Africa" in the room. In fact, this is not at all the case and you need to deal with each proposal in detail so as not to waste money, effort and time in vain.

Now usually use several types of heaters:

  • in the form of rolls;
  • rigid polystyrene boards;
  • dense mats made of mineral wool.

The last two options, in principle, are quite understandable - these are really effective technologies, but also more expensive. But the rolled category of materials is not so unambiguous - this is where you need to figure it out in detail.

First, it is worth considering the main theoretical point.

What are rolled heat insulators

The first type of insulation made in the form of rolls is mineral wool materials. Vata itself happens on this basis:

  • From cullet and quartz. This is the so-called glass wool, which is so common in Soviet-built houses.
  • From rocks (for example, basalt);
  • Cotton wool from blast-furnace waste.

It is recommended to use slag insulation only outside the walls, since there it does not cause any harm to health. But basalt products, in principle, can be laid indoors, the main thing is to pull a vapor barrier on top of them so that small fibers do not get into the air.

As for whether to insulate the walls with basalt wool from the outside or better from the inside, there is also no definite answer. The fact is that the material is afraid of moisture and if you mount it from the side of the facade, then you need to make good external protection (for example, from a vapor barrier and a metal profile). And this is expensive - if there are already such means, then it is better to use polystyrene foam or cotton wool in the form of plates.

But in general, basalt rolled insulation is still more relevant for use from the side of the room, because this way it lasts longer and better. The basic principle of action here is the retention of heat, that is, cotton wool, as it were, does not allow it to quickly go outside.

The second group is thermal insulation made of foamed polyethylene or polypropylene. The material is also produced in the form of rolls and can be of two types:

  • foil coated;
  • with metallized outside.

The first insulation is good because it has a good level of resistance to mechanical stress and reflects heat well. Due to this, the solution is suitable for indoor applications, for example, it is possible to mount the curtain behind radiators to retain heat. Among the shortcomings, one can single out poor vapor permeability and the fact that a foil of sufficient thickness will be expensive.

In addition, this thermal insulation is not suitable for direct contact with concrete walls- alkali simply corrodes the foil.

Metallized products pass steam well, but they do not reflect heat efficiently enough. Topical use for wall cladding of shower rooms and rooms with high humidity. By the way, here the coating cannot be called resistant at all - the slightest mechanical impact and the metal begins to “peel off” from the base of the insulation. Now we can move on to the most important question.

So which option is better to choose: cotton wool or polyethylene foam

The main point that is important to understand is that foamed polyethylene or polypropylene in the form of rolls is exactly thermal insulation, that is, a material whose purpose is to slightly improve the characteristics of the walls, and not fully insulate them. Regardless of where it will be fixed - from the inside or from the front.

But basalt wool is already a real insulating layer. True, in the case of indoor use, the wall will still freeze through, just noticeably less heat will come out of the room.

It turns out that from the inside, polypropylene will give a lesser effect than cotton wool, since the temperature will rise only by a degree and a half. And even if you perform outdoor installation, then the “picture” will be the same, but with only one positive moment - the wall will freeze a little less and the condensate from the side of the room will disappear.

At the same time, the material has an undeniable advantage - it is cheap and it is very easy to mount it. It is more difficult and expensive to work with cotton wool, since it will be necessary to make a false wall (usually drywall) to protect the basalt fibers, and besides, it is important to take care that moisture does not get into the structure of the material. If this happens, then the effect of all the work done will be zero, since all thermal insulation qualities will disappear very quickly.

Here it seems to start to seem that cotton wool is better anyway (because it is “warmer”), but everything is decided by the nuances of the situation. Yes, cotton wool seems to be good, but what's the point in it if, for example, you need to insulate the shower room not in the house, but, for example, in the country and you don’t want to invest? The obvious budget solution in this case is a metallized insulator - stick it on the wall and forget it.

But in the case of a more or less capital approach, but again in the absence of noticeable financial resources- it is better to opt for mineral wool and insulation from the inside. It turns out that there is no ideal option and a decision needs to be made only based on the characteristics of the project.

Roll insulation- this is the name of a whole class of lightweight thermal insulation, widely used in civil and industrial construction. They are made from staple fiberglass with the addition of various binders, fillers, water repellents (substances that repel water), which give them softness, elasticity and resilience. Roll thermal insulation is the most inexpensive of all types of insulation, therefore it is in consistently high demand among builders.

This section of the site presents roll insulation, their price and roll parameters. All information about products from different manufacturers is given on one page. Here you will also find short description each of them.

Wall insulation with roll insulation is most often used in cases where the area of \u200b\u200bthe walls is significant, and there are long straight spans. In this case, it is possible to achieve a significant savings in the cost of materials and performance in comparison with heaters in the form of plates or mats. A variety of insulating materials are supplied in rolls, from mineral wool to pressed cork. Each of them has its own advantages in specific conditions. Installation of roll insulation is not a complicated operation and does not require highly qualified workers or expensive equipment.

Main types

Experts distinguish the following features and varieties of insulation supplied in rolls.

According to the material, heaters are divided into several varieties:

  • Mineral (, glass or slag wool). Usually used for exterior walls.
  • Polymer - based on foamed plastics. Used to insulate walls from the inside and outside.
  • Cork - from the pressed bark of the cork tree. Rolled cork insulation for internal walls attached to the wallpaper.

Mineral and polymer roll insulation can be glued on one side with aluminum foil to reduce thermal conductivity and improve waterproofing. A thin layer of foil reflects over 95% of thermal radiation, returning heat to the insulated room. The foil not only reflects heat well, but also increases the strength of the material.

Mineral basalt wool in a roll

Characteristics

Roll insulation materials are characterized by the following main parameters:

  • Environmental friendliness. All models on the market must comply with building safety requirements for installation, operation and disposal. They must contain small amounts of harmful substances, these substances must not be released from the insulation during its storage, installation and during use. The packaging indicates the method of disposal. The materials are resistant to organic solvents and other active substances.
  • Fire and biosecurity. Mineral insulation does not burn itself and prevents the spread of flame. Foam materials are able to withstand fire for a certain time. Materials prevent mold and repel rodents.
  • Air and vapor permeability. Key characteristics. They show how much air or water vapor at a certain temperature can seep through a unit area of the material. Vapor permeability is necessary in order to remove excess dampness from the room to the outside through the walls and their ventilation systems.
  • Strength. Important characteristic wallpaper insulation. Touching, including with hard objects, should not damage the wallpaper.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantages of roll material are:

  • Versatility. Suitable for thermal insulation of any surfaces. For complex spatial shapes, including curvilinear, a suitable piece can be cut.
  • Minimum requirements for surface preparation prior to laying.
  • Benefit in terms of material price and work productivity when insulating large wall areas, especially straight sections.

They have rolled materials and disadvantages.

  • High labor intensity when laying in a frequent crate, additional time is required for cutting.
  • Low rigidity does not allow them to be used where it is required to withstand significant loads.

In general, the advantages compensate for the disadvantages, which explains the high popularity of roll materials among consumers.

Materials are harmless to health, provided they are used correctly and fire-fighting regime is observed.

What to consider when working

Mineral insulation roll materials can be carried out at any time of the year, it is only important to protect the material from precipitation.

The use of foam materials mounted on an adhesive layer depends on the air temperature. Usually limited to -10C. Special adhesives are also produced, effective up to -20C.

Before the start of insulation, a minimum surface preparation is required:

  • Dismantle pipes, electrical wiring, lamps, decorations, plants, etc.
  • Clean the walls from the remnants of old coatings, debris and dust.
  • Install a crate for mineral insulation.
  • Level and clean the surface for gluing foamed thermal insulators.

Installation does not require special equipment, from the tools you will need:

  • construction knife;
  • stapler;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • double sided tape.

It is more convenient to carry out installation and cutting of rolled heaters together, especially with large amounts of work. Small volumes are within the power of one master.

Warming process

The sequence of operations for the installation of mineral heaters is as follows

  • A vapor barrier film is attached to the prepared wall.
  • A crate is mounted from wooden bars or metal profiles. The recommended guide pitch is 50 or 60 cm.
  • Rolls are cut according to the selected pitch. Cutting should be carried out so that the insulation enters between the guides tightly and, straightening out, provides a better fit to the guide.

Dowel dowel

The not always convenient and functional thermal insulation boards are replaced by an improved version of thermal insulation - roll insulation, which is equally effective both for walls and for ventilation ducts, pipes, roofs and other surfaces. The material is improved technical parameters and unlike mineral wool in slabs with high rates stiffness and density allows it to be used for elements with complex geometry.

The heater is characterized by high performance and technical specifications sold at an affordable price. Rolled insulation is used both in repair and capital construction to improve the thermal insulation properties of surfaces:

  • basement;
  • attic
  • balcony;
  • gender;
  • coverings, etc.

A standard mineral wool-based roll insulation for wallpaper on the walls in a living room allows you to increase the temperature by several degrees by reducing heat loss.

Additionally, the material prevents the development of dampness, the appearance of fungus and mold, and if there is an uneven surface, it hides flaws without additional work.

The wide scope of mineral wool in rolls allows us to talk about its versatility. The material is practically indispensable in modern areas of construction, it allows you to create a really working and durable layer of thermal insulation both in apartments and houses, and in outbuildings, at enterprises, saunas, baths, etc.

Particularly important is the ability of the material to come into contact with pipes and surfaces of ventilation shafts. In this case, rolled thermal insulation is arranged primarily due to the elasticity and flexibility of the material. Rolls are easy to use, allow you to finish uneven surfaces, including at sub-zero temperatures.

Advantages of thermal insulation in rolls

Comparing roll insulation with conventional mineral wool boards, the advantages of the former are obvious. These include:

  1. The minimum indicators of thermal conductivity, including among budget models.
  2. Resistance to atmospheric phenomena, temperature fluctuations, rodents and microorganisms while maintaining the main thermal insulation properties.
  3. Wide choice of material based different types mineral wool for warming surfaces with different performance characteristics and features.
  4. Resistance to high temperatures (up to 700 degrees Celsius), open flame.
  5. Noise-reducing properties, which allows you to increase the level of heat and sound insulation.
  6. Ease of installation.

There is also a small drawback in rolled thermal insulation based on mineral wool - high vapor conductivity, which will require a vapor barrier layer.

Types and characteristics of thermal insulation in rolls

At the heart of the insulation in rolls is mineral wool, which can be presented in several versions:

  • in the form of basalt wool;
  • glass wool;
  • slag.

Materials based on basalt wool are created using the technology of remelting rocks with the formation of thin rocks woven into a single carpet on their basis.

For the manufacture of materials based on glass wool, remelted glass cullet is used, which can significantly reduce the cost of finished heat insulators.

For thermal insulation in rolls based on slag wool, mainly waste from the metallurgical industry is used. Compared to heaters based on the above-described heaters based on basalt wool and glass wool, it is the cheapest.

For each of the mentioned thermal insulation materials their own set of characteristics is characteristic, despite the fact that they are all an improved version of mineral wool. So, for example, glass wool is sufficiently resistant to high temperatures. The heat insulator is able to withstand up to 450 degrees Celsius, when the temperature rises above the specified mark, the surface is destroyed and cannot be restored.

For materials based on glass wool the highest rates density and thermal conductivity. The rolls are not combustible, do not smolder, perfectly cope with vibration manifestations, suppress sound vibrations and, most importantly, do not shrink, regardless of the length of service life.

Of the minuses of materials based on fiberglass wool, it is worth noting the instability to moisture, as well as the unpleasant consequences that occur when it comes into contact with human skin.

Heat insulators based on basalt wool in rolls withstand high temperatures up to 700 degrees, have excellent thermal conductivity and density. Unlike fiberglass wool based heat insulators, materials are able to withstand moisture while maintaining basic performance characteristics even after getting wet. Heat insulators belong to the group of environmentally friendly safe materials not capable of causing allergic reactions.

Slag wool - thermal insulation for warming surfaces, the operating temperature of which does not exceed 300 degrees Celsius. The density of materials reaches 400 kg/m3, thermal conductivity ranges from 0.046 to 0.048 W/m*S.

The temperature exceeding the specified limit will lead to the melting of the slag with the destruction of the structure. Depending on the manufacturer, you can choose materials for thermal insulation based on slag wool with suitable parameters: length - from 3 to 6 m, width - from 0.6 to 1.2 meters, thickness - from 50 to 150 mm.

Heat insulator with a foil surface: features

Foil insulation materials have one main feature - the side with a layer of foil, designed to reduce surface exposure to ultraviolet rays and additional protection from moisture. Use materials for warming surfaces indoors with a base of different types of wool.

It is necessary to work with foil thermal insulation according to special technology, observing some nuances, for example, not forgetting a small gap (no more than 1.5 cm) between the finish and the heat-insulating material. This is important, because when the temperature rises, the insulation will keep the temperature, transferring it to the back wall, returning it back to the walls, but not to the room, as necessary.

Another important nuance is that, unlike heaters in rolls based on basalt, fiberglass or slag wool, the foil heat insulator is mounted on the crate, overlapping and treating the joints with insulating material.

Tips for choosing thermal insulation in rolls: what you need to know

Summing up all the above, it remains to note a few important nuances regarding the choice of materials based on roll-type mineral wool for insulation. Experts recommend first of all to take into account the type of surface and purpose. It is necessary to select materials suitable for thermal insulation of certain surfaces: wood, concrete, brick, etc.

Do not write off the thickness of the base, taking into account temperature indicators and precipitation in the region, especially when it comes to external insulation.

When buying materials for thermal insulation based on any of the listed types of wool, you should pay attention to the integrity of the package. It is strictly forbidden for moisture to form on the material in the packaging.

Each of the types of insulators listed above has its own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, so the choice should be made after a thorough analysis of them, depending on the required functionality.

When insulating large areas, the best efficiency is shown not by insulating boards, but by rolls with insulation. The same applies to pipes and ventilation ducts. Their main difference is the increased density, and the consequence of this is the high rigidity of the coating, which makes it possible to insulate objects with non-standard geometry much better.

Species features

There are several varieties of insulation, mainly they are divided by composition.

mineral wool

One of the most common in the Russian market is a thermal insulation material based on mineral wool. This is mainly due to the combination of price and technological properties the material itself. It is very easy to operate. It is advisable to choose a white, soft and self-adhesive material for the timber.

The name "mineral wool" is inherent in many heat-insulating materials, which are different in their composition and properties. Not very popular is a heater, which is made by melting some rocks to form certain fibers. In the manufacture of these fibers are woven into a single carpet, this wool is called "basalt". For any resident of Russia and the CIS, the term "glass wool" is also familiar.

This thermal insulation material is an outdated technology, but because of its price, it is still in demand today. It is made by melting broken glass into single fibers. There is also cotton wool obtained in the process of remelting waste from the metallurgical industry (slag wool).

Due to the raw materials that are used in its manufacture, its price is much lower than that of glass wool or basalt wool.

Characteristics, pros and cons

Cotton wool differs from each other in technical characteristics. Glass wool has a high temperature threshold of 450 degrees, after which the material acquires irreversible damage. The density of glass wool is 130 kg / m3, and the thermal conductivity is about 0.04 W / m * C. This material is not combustible, it does not smolder, it has a high vibration and sound absorption threshold.

There is virtually no shrinkage over time, including long-term options.

The disadvantages include the fact that when water enters, all the positive properties of this material come to naught. Glass wool is a rather brittle and brittle material. Upon contact with the skin, it causes irritation, itching, which is problematic to remove.

If it enters the organs of vision, it can seriously harm them, as well as if it enters the nasopharynx. It is necessary to work with such material in closed clothes.

Basalt wool can withstand high temperatures (up to 710 degrees). Its thermal conductivity is about 0.04 W / m * C, the density varies between 210 - 230 kg / m3. Unlike glass wool, this material is not afraid of moisture, and also does not lose its properties. In case of contact with the skin, the roll insulation does not cause irritation or itching.

Slag wool has the largest mass and density. Its density fluctuates around 390 - 410 kg / m3, and the thermal conductivity is about 0.047 W / m * C. However, its temperature maximum is much lower (about 300 degrees). Slag wool melts, and its structure is destroyed in the process of melting, and irreversibly.

The sizes of these materials vary, they depend on established standards manufacturer. However, the most common are:

  • length from 3 to 6 m;
  • width is standard 0.6 or 1.2 meters.

Some manufacturers make other width sizes (0.61 m). Wool thickness is standard (20, 50, 100 and 150 mm).

foil material

Often one of the sides of the insulation is covered with a layer of foil material. This allows you to save the coating from exposure to moisture, ultraviolet rays. Most often, these materials are used for internal insulation premises, cotton wool itself can be absolutely any. The types of such material are varied. These include expanded polystyrene, cork, polyethylene.

The most popular material on the market is expanded polystyrene. It is very practical and inexpensive. Great for soundproofing and vibration. The length of the roll is usually 10 m, the width does not exceed 0.5 m. This material copes well with moisture and fungus. However, in terms of the degree of thermal insulation, it is significantly inferior to foamed polyethylene.

Cork thermal insulation is characterized by high strength, low weight, harmlessness and good appearance. For wet rooms, it is recommended to use cork flooring with wax impregnation. The dimensions of this material are the same as those of polystyrene foam. A fairly good material is polyethylene foam. It is a small cell with air, cardboard or paper is located along the edges.

The substrate is fixed by lamination. Due to this, it is possible to achieve the most durable and reliable connection with any type of base. Rolled insulation has good heat-conducting characteristics. Depending on the purpose, there are foil and metallized coatings.

For vapor reflection, a foil type of material is more suitable; for vapor containment, metallized spraying is required.

The coating is very fragile and is damaged by small mechanical impacts. The foil material has excellent heat-reflecting characteristics. It is less susceptible to mechanical damage. Today, silver material with a reflector is quite popular.

Manufacturers and selection criteria

One of the leading companies in the production of roll insulation is a German company Knauf. Distinctive feature products - the absence of formaldehyde. In addition, the materials are characterized by ease of use. This company provides almost every roll with installation instructions, which will allow novice builders to do the work on insulation more efficiently. Due to the composition, insects (beetles, ants) and rodents (rats) will not be able to settle in such thermal insulation.

No less famous is the French brand Isover. This company has a huge selection of roll-type heaters. Foil rolls are also available. The products of this company are used for warming interiors, as well as outside buildings.

Due to its composition, it is refractory, does not support combustion in the event of a fire or a brief fire, and self-extinguishes.

The most common in the European part of Russia is a Spanish company URSA. Its products are somewhat cheaper than the French brand, the assortment is in no way inferior to it, which makes the materials in demand among the buyer. The company gives a very long warranty on their products, it is better to check the exact warranty numbers immediately before buying.

The cheapest insulation produces a domestic brand "TechnoNIKOL", which is aimed at people of average income. The quality of this material is incomparable with foreign counterparts, but the insulation is in high demand by people involved in their own construction of summer cottages or private houses. Due to the price, this is a favorite thermal insulation among management companies and other organizations that want to do something voluminous for little money. Distinguished by its quality and mineral wool "Warm House".

When buying, it is important to remember that different types of rooms require different insulation, just as ceiling insulation is highly undesirable when applied to the floor (and vice versa).

Wall insulation has its own characteristics, because the purpose of each type of insulation is slightly different, as are the properties. Some points also depend on the material of the structure on which the rolled thermal insulation is attached. It is necessary to look at how moisture affects the material in order to take this into account when choosing.

Mounting technology

The installation technology of rolled insulation is slightly different from plates. They begin to insulate the walls or floor initially. The walls are mostly made of slabs, as is the straight ceiling. Therefore, often, the floor and pitched ceiling-walls are suitable for insulation and installation. When insulating the floor, it is worth looking at what type of insulation is available.

Insulation is mainly used in foil, but sometimes insulation rolls are covered with ordinary heat-insulating foil or metal film. The insulation should move away from the walls by 1 cm. This is due to the fact that with temperature changes the material contracts and expands. The lack of free space in a metallized or foil insulation leads to its deformation and damage over time.

Ceiling (pitched) heaters are fixed between the rafters, cutting out a little more to insert better between the boards. Insert them strictly from the bottom up to avoid voids. After installation, the surfaces are clamped with main profiles or boards for applying additional (for example, vapor barrier) materials from above. The work is carried out very carefully.
