We decorate the house: how to make a drywall arch with your own hands. Do-it-yourself drywall arch: the best ideas and projects from world-famous designers (130 photos) How to make an arch opening with your own hands

The transformation of the interior of the premises is being done different ways. One of them is replacing the door with an arch. There are several technologies for its arrangement, but if you look in detail, then almost all of them are similar and quite feasible on their own. Moreover, it is possible to mount both purchased elements of the “arch” and those made independently.

Preparatory activities

Choosing an arch type

Experts recommend focusing on the height of the ceiling and the general style of finishing the room. There are several options for the execution of arched structures, but most of them reduce the opening due to the installation of a supporting frame by about 150 - 200 mm.

  • With low ceilings, it is hardly worth getting rid of interior doors. At the very least, it should be well thought out. The only possible option for finishing the opening after their dismantling is plastering followed by pasting (wallpaper, fabric) to match the walls. Building an arch in this way is quite simple; it is only necessary to correctly process the end parts of the passage. But this version of the design of the room has a significant disadvantage, and therefore does not suit everyone - the lack of crates makes it impossible to install hidden spotlights in the opening.
  • In some articles on the subject of making an arch, there are recommendations for giving the desired geometry to the passage between rooms using cellular blocks, bricks, or the method of concreting. Not to mention the complexity of such work, it is worth considering the additional load on the floor. And since you still have to deal with the solution, then for an apartment - not the best option.

But if the decision is made, then you should take into account the features of the interior of the home. This will help you correctly identify optimal type arches.

  • Classical. The upper part is an arc with a constant radius (semicircle). It is relatively easy to make, as it has the correct geometry. But it is advisable to mount it only in the openings between rooms with high ceilings.
  • "Modern", "Romatica" are well suited for multi-storey buildings. The last type of arches has a large width, and therefore are recommended for installation in the opening leading from the hall to the hallway.
  • "Portal". The fundamental difference from others is that it is a rectangular arch. It is advisable to install it in private buildings. In relation to the apartment, it looks great, but only if the style of the room is dominated by straight lines. A significant advantage of this design is that it is mounted without much difficulty, even in the absence of skills.
  • "Ellipse" and "Trapeze" have a more original shape. Deciding how to make an arch in doorway according to one of these schemes, it is worth considering that the correctness of the geometry largely depends on the accuracy of calculating the parameters of all elements and radii (angles).

There are other design options for openings: Venetian, Florentine, with "shoulders" and a number of others. But build interior arch any of these varieties is so difficult that for self-assembly they should not be chosen.

Material selection

  • Frame. There are only two options here - wooden slats and metal profile. It is more difficult to work with the first ones, especially if the vault has a geometry with changing parameters. Bending wood is not only a complex process, but also a long one. In addition, the tree absorbs moisture well, is prone to drying out, and therefore deformation cannot be avoided. In this regard, more durable and reliable is door arch assembled on a metal frame.

  • Facing. Panels made of plastic or chipboard with lamination look great, besides, they do not require further finishing. The downside is that it is difficult to choose their shade for a specific interior; besides, such an arch will be more expensive. It is better to use elements from fiberboard, plywood (small thickness) or gypsum board. Working with these sheet materials (cutting, bending) is much easier. Plus, the finish can be made any, at your discretion.
  • Must have experience working with wood. It is difficult to bend and, in some cases, process. For example, the selection of grooves, quarters without special tools and fixtures is not done.
  • Lumber still needs to be properly selected. First of all, by breed. Each has its own characteristic features, and the use largely depends on the specifics of the room in terms of microclimate.

Operating procedure

  1. Removing the door frame. The opening must be completely cleared; not only from the frame with the sash, but also from sealing / insulating materials.

  1. Markup. There is one caveat to note at this point; the ends of the wall must be strong. And therefore, if it does not meet this requirement in a separate area, you will have to think about either strengthening it (for example, with a corner), or additional sampling of a part of the material with subsequent alignment. But in the latter case, the size of the opening will increase. This is typical for houses made of wood, if it is found that rot has developed on a beam (log).

  • Dimensions should be taken at several levels. Even if the skew is visually and imperceptible, then when the door arch is mounted with your own hands, difficulties may arise.
  • Many discrepancies raise the question of what to do first - draw up a drawing of the arch or determine the dimensions of the opening. Here it is worth focusing on local specifics. If the material of the walls is easy to process, then it is not difficult to expand the opening. Otherwise, the design parameters will have to be “customized” to fit it.
  1. Support frame attachment. It is assembled in several stages.
  • Arrangement of the main circuit. In accordance with the drawing, all external rails of the vertical installation are “fastened” to the wall.
  • Fastening "vault". Additionally top part arches are fixed with hangers, which are located symmetrically across the entire width of the opening.

  • Strengthening the frame. For this, transverse elements are used that are installed along the arch along its entire profile. Approximately - 50 ± 10 cm apart. For GCR, a maximum is also sufficient (about 55 - 60), but if the lining is done with a board, then the interval should be reduced to 45 - 50.
  • Closing gaps. In fact, this is one of the ways to insulate the opening. Depending on the material of the wall and frame, the appropriate agent is selected - mortar, polyurethane foam, putty or otherwise.

  1. Wiring. As a rule, all arched openings are highlighted. That is why the lines are mounted even before the frame is finished.
  1. Structural cladding. The specifics of fixing the skin elements depends on their material. But they are attached to the rails of the metal profile with self-tapping screws; the easiest and most convenient way. It is only necessary to outline the location of the holes and drill channels for the hardware.

  1. Finishing the arch
  • Putty application. This is necessary to smooth out the roughness.
  • Soil treatment. Such products simultaneously increase the water-repellent properties of the base and the adhesion of the material.
  • Strengthening the finish (if necessary). The edges of the GKL are reinforced with a small corner (made of plastic, with perforation), the surface itself is reinforced with a reinforcing mesh that is glued.
  • Reapplication of putty and primer.
  • Grinding.
  • Finish coating. Possible options– paints and varnishes, decorative films, veneer, wallpaper, stucco, mirrors. There are no stereotypes - your own imagination will tell you what kind to give the opening.

In principle, the process of mounting and finishing the arch for an economic man is not difficult. And if we take into account in advance such a moment as the maintainability of the structure, then they will not arise in the future.

Starting to repair an apartment or house, people strive to make their home as comfortable, stylish and elegant as possible. One of the most popular design ideas is the design of the doorway in the form of a semicircular arch. Having studied the technology, it is quite possible to make an arch from GKL with your own hands.

Using an arched structure, you can influence the design of the entire environment and set the tone for the arrangement of the entire interior.

Arched structures are used not only for decoration doorways, but also for the zonal division of the corridor. In this article, you will learn how to make an arch from GKL with your own hands.

Necessary tools and material

From the tools you will need a screwdriver, tape measure, construction square, pencil, spatula, grater, container, knife, sponge, drill, jigsaw, metal shears.

Draw the outline of the arch on the drywall. To draw the upper part of the arched structure, use a home-made compass from a self-tapping screw screwed into drywall and a thread tied to it with a pencil

The greater the length of the thread, the greater the radius of the arc. Here you have the opportunity to experiment until you get the shape of the arch you need.

The blade of the tool must cut through the material strictly according to the markup - the quality of the arch directly depends on this. Next, start creating the arched frame. It can be metal or wood. Both options have their advantages: the aluminum profile is characterized by evenness and lightness, while the tree is distinguished by great strength.

If you have a concrete wall, then you first need to make holes with a drill, insert dowels into them and only then screw in the screws.

Then, after attaching all the profiles to the wall, start the installation of the plasterboard. Sheets are installed using a screwdriver. The size of the screws depends on the thickness of the drywall.

Fasten the curved aluminum profile along the edge of the drywall. This will increase the rigidity of the structure. First, attach both ends of the curved track to the metal frame, and then screw the drywall sheets to it. You need to screw in the screws in increments of 0.1-0.15 m.

Mount perpendicular pieces of the profile to connect the side walls of the arched structure to each other.

Fix the lower arched arch section. Using a tape measure, measure the length and width of the arc. Cut out the appropriate piece from the gypsum board. Attach it to the bottom of the arch, gently bending to give the desired shape.

The edges of the drywall rectangle should be flush with the walls of the arch. Fix the section with self-tapping screws on both sides of the arc. Read from the center of the arch.

Inspect the resulting design and eliminate minor defects. Proceed to finishing. Tape the edges of the drywall with fiberglass mesh or paper tape.

Apply putty (minimum 3 coats). Sand thoroughly with a grater. The arch is ready. It remains only to paint it.

Varieties of arches

Exists different types drywall arches. They usually differ in the configuration of the top, and in some cases in the way they are connected to the vertical segments.

The photo of drywall arches shows that they are usually divided into six types:

  • Classic.
  • Modern.
  • Romance.
  • Ellipse.
  • Trapeze.
  • Portal.

Also, a semi-arch is separately distinguished.

It is not so difficult to make and mount an arched structure yourself. You just need to study the technology and choose the appropriate design of the drywall arch. We wish you success.

Photo of drywall arches

Today, even an ordinary Khrushchev can become very beautiful inside, without the need to demolish the walls or lay out new ones.

Replace complex construction works and drywall will help to eliminate the formation of dust. It is inexpensive, easy to work and install, and is also considered the most sought-after material. With its help, surfaces are leveled, drywall is used to make partitions, partitions, and you can also create door arches. It is about drywall door arches that will be discussed in the article, and a guide will be presented on how to make a drywall arch with your own hands.

Arch selection

The first thing you will need to dwell on is the arched opening and its appearance. Arches are different, there is a complex design, there is a simpler one, some use a shelf for things, others do not. Among the common and frequently used, drywall arches are distinguished, which are presented in the table:

arch type: Description:
Classical: The drywall arch is symmetrical, dome-shaped.
Asymmetrical arch: The arch is created with a displaced center. This method of creation is simple and economical, does not require much effort and can be suitable for any room and interior.
Gothic: This arch has the most high point obtained by connecting the planes at an angle with a slight inclination.
Openwork: The arch is different from other types because it has niches, through holes that run along the line of the doorway.
Tiered: In this case, the arch can be of any shape, as a rule, such arches are unusual, but to create it you need a good imagination and the ability to work with drywall.
Segmental: An arch in which there is a shelf, a niche and other places where various objects are placed. The option is suitable for any room design.
Romance: Very practical option arches, ideal for combining a balcony and a room, the kitchen is often decorated with this type of plasterboard arch.
Portal: The simplest and cheapest arch, made in the form of the letter "P".
Semiarka: A stylish design option, the arch is formed into a quarter of a circle, but you can also round a small part of the opening if it is wide.

Everyone can make an arch in an apartment with their own hands from drywall, while any arch shape is used, depending on the taste, how the installation is carried out correctly will be presented step by step below.

Materials and inventory

In order not to waste time during the repair, it is necessary to immediately prepare the materials and the necessary equipment, only then it will be possible to build a drywall arch. To create an arch you need:

  • Several sheets of drywall, depending on the size of the arched opening and the chosen shape. It is recommended to use plasterboard sheets 6.5 mm thick when building arches. Such material is ideal if the opening is curly, like most arches, it will be easier to work with it.
  • Several metal profiles to create a frame.

  • Dowel.
  • Self-tapping screws for metal, of different lengths, in the process of creating an arch, it will be necessary to use self-tapping screws 3.5x25 mm, as well as 4.2x13 mm.
  • Metal shears for cutting profiles.
  • Pliers.
  • Stationery knife for cutting drywall.
  • Drill and screwdriver, depending on what the wall is made of, a hammer drill may be required.
  • Needle roller.
  • Level, measuring tape and marker, pencil.
  • Serpyanka.
  • Spatula of different sizes and plaster putty.
  • Sandpaper of different grits.
  • Perforated corners to shape the corners of the arch.
  • Ground and finishing materials.

Important! Before you start creating a drywall arch, it is recommended to dodrawingthe arch itself, as well as cookprojectrooms tointeriorthe arched opening blended aesthetically into the overall design.

How to bend drywall for an arch in a doorway (video)

Preparatory work

Before starting the construction of the arch, it is necessary to prepare a doorway where the installation will be carried out. First you need to remove the door and door frame, this allows you to slightly make the opening larger in size, which is important, because the arch will always visually make the height smaller. After removing the box, you need to remove everything, clean it from dirt and dust and remnants of building materials.

Often used the classic design of arches, which have an oval contour. This design consists of three parts of drywall material:

  1. 2 parts drywall sheet identical in shape, they are also the side parts.
  2. 1 piece of drywall will be curved.

To create the side two parts, you need to mark the drywall:

  1. Using a tape measure, the size of the width of the opening is removed and the radius, the angle of the arch is determined.
  2. Next, you need to use a nylon thread, along the length, which will be the same as the radius of the future arch.
  3. A pair of loops is made on the thread, in one of which you need to insert an awl, and in the second a pencil.
  4. Next, you need to stick the awl into the GKL, pull the thread evenly and draw an arc with a pencil.
  5. When the size of the radius is transferred, you will need to cut one side part with a jigsaw or a clerical knife.
  6. The finished drywall arc of the arch is applied to another sheet of drywall, and a new drawing is drawn along its contours, after which the procedure is repeated, cutting out the second drywall arc.

This completes the preparation, the room is cleaned and you can begin to install the frame for the future arch.

Installation of the arch frame

The frame is the basis of the entire arch and reliability must be taken care of immediately, during construction. The diagram below will allow you to correctly make a frame from a profile:

  1. Initially, at the top of the doorway, dowels will be required to attach guide strips from metal profiles. By analogy with the profile, they are mounted on the wall itself. Such parts should be installed on both sides of the arched opening, starting from the top point and ending with the end of the rounding.
  2. Next, using a conventional metal profile, you need to create an arc. It is not difficult to do this, you just need to create cuts on the profile with metal scissors, with a distance of 5-10 cm from the size. After that, the profile is bent, for maximum accuracy. finished construction, for the template, you can use a ready-made drywall sheet, which is cut in an arc.
  3. When it was possible to bend the profile, it must be installed in the slats of the opening; for this, the arc is fixed to the vertical parts with dowels. For a drywall arch, you will need to bend 2 profiles, to which a prepared drywall arc will later be attached.
  4. For the reliability of the arch frame, it is recommended to fill the space between the arcs. This is done using the same profile that is inserted between a pair of arcs, but you can use wooden block and insert between them.
  5. When the frame is ready and fixed to it, two parts of drywall are attached, they are installed on the side, using self-tapping screws for this. The distance between the screws should be about 10 cm.

The next step will be the installation and bending of the drywall sheet at the bottom, as well as the finishing of the arch.

Arch installation

Important! In order for the door arch to have the correct bottom radius, you will need to cut an even strip of drywall that will fit the length and width of the arch. In this case, it is recommended to use a flexible meter for accurate measurement. In addition to the drywall strip, add 10 cm.

To make drywall flexible, you need to use a little water. The lower part of the cut drywall strip is wetted with water, after which it is passed over the sheet with a spiked roller and the material can be left to dry for a short time. Further, the drywall strip is carefully applied to the arch and bent in shape, the sheet must be secured with adhesive tape or masking tape and left in this position until completely dry. It should be remembered that for the arch, the lower part of the drywall should not be very wetted with water, otherwise the material will soften and crack.

When drywall is barely damp, it can be screwed to the frame with self-tapping screws on both sides. The beginning of the installation is carried out from the middle of the arched opening and fastened to the edges. After 12 hours, the drywall will dry completely and you can proceed to the next steps.

There is another option, how to bend a rectangular drywall, for this, cardboard cuts are made on one side, after which the material is applied to the arch and gently bent and fixed with self-tapping screws. This method can not always be used, but only if you need to make a small angle, the radius of the arch. The step by step process will be:

  1. Drywall is cut almost to the full depth on one side.
  2. The drywall is broken along the cuts made, the main thing is that the gypsum remains on the cardboard and the paper is not damaged.
  3. Further, the slots must immediately be puttied, and in addition, each cut is recommended to be sealed with a sickle.
  4. The finished part is installed in the arch and attached to the frame. It is important here not to tighten the screws at the edges so that the drywall arch does not lose its shape and does not deform. The self-tapping screws themselves need to be recessed in drywall.
  5. Each puttied area will need to be cleaned with sandpaper, using initially a coarser grit, and then moving on to a finer grain, so that in the end there is a perfect, smooth surface.

The installation of the drywall arch is completed and only the finishing and cladding remains. After installing the arch, you should get a design similar to the one in the photo:

Final works

The sheathing of the frame is completed and it is necessary to proceed to the final stages of the construction of the drywall arch. Step by step instruction for final stage will be as follows:

  1. Initially, drywall on the arch must be processed, cleaning its corners and edges with sandpaper, if there are large defects, you can carefully trim the sides with a knife. Due to this action, all irregularities and defects will be eliminated, the protrusions will turn out to be rounded and beautiful.
  2. Next, you need to plaster the surface. Initially, you will need to buy a putty for the seams and use it to close up all the mounting joints, while you need to remember to use sickle at the seams so that cracks do not form in the future.
  3. The joints are sealed and it is necessary to seal the holes for the screws using the same putty.
  4. Before puttying the entire drywall arch, it is necessary to install perforated corners, it is better to use plastic corners. With their help, it will be possible to achieve even corners that will keep their shapes. The installation of the corners is carried out on the putty material, after which, by analogy, they are closed with putty.

  1. The putty itself must be diluted as the instructions for it say; for drywall, it is recommended to use an acrylic composition.
  2. Putty is applied throughout the arch, not a very thick layer. After that, the structure is left for several hours to dry. When the surface is white, this is a sign that the putty has dried. The surface of the arch must be sanded with sandpaper in order to remove irregularities and defects.
  3. Next, you need to re-putty the surface of the arch and also give time to dry, and then walk with sandpaper.
  4. After removing dust and dirt, a primer layer is applied, the drywall arch is left to dry.
  5. Now the last layer of putty is applied, and when it dries, you just need to sand the surface and remove dust.

On this, the installation and processing of the drywall arch is completed and all that remains is to decorate the surface.

Decorating an interior arch

Making a drywall arch with your own hands is not the end, because you will need to ennoble the structures and give it the look you need, based on the design in which the apartment was made or repairs in a separate room, corridor. Decoration should not only be original and beautiful, it is also important that the arch remains practical.

After all, from time to time a drywall arch will come into contact with human hands, possibly feet, as well as objects that will be transferred. Due to this, the decoration of the arch may suffer or get dirty, and the finish must be approached carefully. Such a device as a drywall arch can be decorated with the following type of materials:

  1. Paste wallpaper. This decoration method is often used to decorate an arched opening and the method is standard. Due to the large selection of wallpapers, with different textures, colors or patterns, such a design can be very original, spectacular and individual. If we talk about practicality, then it will depend on the material from which the wallpaper is made. For example, for drywall arches, a non-woven vinyl coating is best suited. They are of high quality and will last a long time on the arch, they can also be washed. They are perfect if the arch opens into a large hall or the arch often connects the bedroom and the corridor. It will be easiest to arrange a rectangular or square arched opening.
  2. Coloring. In this case it is better to use water-based paint, this design option for plasterboard arches is also often used and is considered a very practical choice, because if necessary, you can paint the surface many times. It is worth noting that drywall arches will not need a lot of paint, so when buying it, it is better to choose a more expensive, but high-quality one. The cost of the material will pay off, but the arch will be more beautiful and more reliable, more practical. The paint can be used on any arch, if it is oblique, with a curly arch or with niches. In addition, after staining, you can make a drawing or painting on the arch, but in this case you need not only imagination, but also artistic skill.
  3. Upholstery with fabrics. Sheathing the arch with a cloth is not very practical, but it is beautiful, noble and unusual. In this case, the fabric for the arches can be any, but the decoration method must be selected for a specific interior and depending on the size of the plasterboard arch.
  4. Decoration with stone. An arched opening made of plasterboard in the corridor or in the kitchen is often decorated with stone. This method is very reliable and beautiful, however, the price of the stone will be high, and the decoration process becomes more complicated. But the life of the stone is not limited.

Each person chooses the design of arches individually, based on various factors.

complex arches

Not always a partition, a drywall arch is made of a simple shape. In some cases, additional niches are used in the arch, which are also made of drywall, because not everyone will be satisfied with the oval in the arch. If shelves or niches are used in the arch, then the backlighting in them is very effectively combined.

Initially, when making a drywall arch, you should decide on the size and location of the structure. Marking is carried out, according to the conditions in the apartment. When the arch is determined, the installation of a complex drywall structure can begin.

Using the level, you need to make a line on the wall, which will serve as part of the drywall arch. Further, a profile is installed along the marked line, and the second one is mounted at the top of the arched opening. On the finished profiles, which will have the shape of the letter "G", it is necessary to fasten a sheet of drywall, which is pre-cut. On drywall, you can make any shape or pattern using a pencil and a jigsaw or knife.

A pair of identical parts should be cut out of a drywall sheet, and then screwed to the frame, the thickness of which can be different, each person sets the thickness of the arch himself, using a profile. In fact, complex structures from drywall are created according to the scheme described above, but the complexity can only be in the lines for which it takes more time to cut. If it is not clear how to make a complex drywall arch, then you should look at the video, a master class on creating complex drywall partitions.

Creating drywall arches or partitions allows you to add zest to any apartment. It is not difficult to work with drywall, the cost of the material, including drywall, is low, which is why it is beneficial to use funds for building arches in the house.

The great popularity of drywall arches (gypsum plasterboard) is due to its properties. The article describes the types of arches, materials and tools used during installation. The preparatory operations are described. The main attention is paid to the question - how to make drywall arches with your own hands, with the application of video material. Installation advice is provided.

Drywall

Drywall (GKL) - sheet composite material, consisting of two layers of cardboard and a layer of gypsum with fillers between them. The main advantages of the material, causing its widespread use:

  • the possibility of bending;
  • ease of processing;
  • environmental friendliness, fire safety;
  • low price.

Types of arches

Among the variety of arches are:

  • classic arches with a constant radius - variants of the arc of a circle.
  • elliptical arches - the arc of an ellipse.
  • arch-portal and arch-romance - rectangular arches, etc.

The most popular are the first two types. Complex shapes are possible, it all depends on the imagination. Arches are arranged in interior openings as an alternative (most often) or in wall niches.

Attention! The arch must be high. It makes no sense to make an arch in an opening whose height is less than 2 m.

Materials and tools

For the installation of arches, two types of plasterboards are used - ceiling and arched. The second is more expensive, but more convenient to use.

Tool:

  • roulette;
  • pencil;
  • construction knife or electric jigsaw (preferably) - for cutting sheets;
  • scissors for metal - profile processing;
  • screwdriver;
  • perforator;

Auxiliary materials:

  • Profile - special arched (for example, PN 28/27), ceiling and guide can be;
  • dowels 6x45 mm;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • serpyanka, putty "uniflot", "fugenfüller";
  • a sheet of cardboard - as a future template (optional).

Material preparation (cutting and bending)

The arch has three elements:

  • 2 identical side walls;
  • arc element - a rectangular strip, bent along.

Side sheet cutout defines arch profile. A profile with a constant radius is easy to make with a homemade compass. This is a string of the required length with a fixed center (for example, a screwed in screw) and a pencil on the other side. An elliptical profile can be made using any flexible rail. If you fix the ends along the width of the arch, then by changing the length of the rail you can get the desired profile (ellipse arc). It is enough just to outline the contour of the rail with a pencil.

Cutting sheets is done with a jigsaw. The knife requires more effort and time, especially for a curved surface, the edges will have to be finalized. Drywall thickness for installation:

  • 6-10 mm- bent sheet;
  • 10-12 mm- side pieces.

GKL bend

This is the most painstaking and responsible operation that can be performed in two ways:

  • dry bend- gradual bending of the sheet as it is attached to the profile. Recommended for beginners.
  • wet bend- wetting the inner surface of the profile and giving the desired shape on the template. Before wetting, the sheet is perforated with a needle roller in two directions. Humidification is done with a spray or sponge. The sheet gradually, under its own weight, takes the form of a template. Drying time is at least 12 hours.

In both cases, you must keep in mind the thickness of the drywall, which affects the bending radius:

Please note: there is a method that is referred to as dry. On the back surface of the GCR, transverse cuts are applied in increments of 3 mm or more, depending on the radius. The depth of the cut should not disturb the outer layer of the cardboard. During installation, drywall cracks slightly.

Do-it-yourself installation of an arch from GKL

Installation of arches various kinds and forms has common principles. As an example, the sequence of installing an arch in an interior opening is given. Actions at any stage may vary somewhat at the discretion of the performer. The installation site must be prepared: wallpaper, paint, etc.

  1. Determine the main dimensions of the arch with a tape measure.
  2. Draw on the sheet the overall lines of the wall of the arch. Mark the cut line with a compass or with a flexible strip.
  3. Cut out the side wall with a jigsaw or knife. Cut the second part according to the first (sample).
  4. Cut the guide profile with scissors for metal: along the width of the opening - 2 and along the height of the arch - 4 pieces.
  5. The frame is mounted on dowels with self-tapping screws, the distance from the edge of the wall must correspond to the thickness of the plasterboard. Holes are drilled with a perforator - depth 5-7 cm, step 40 cm.

  1. Fasten the cut sheets to the frame with drywall / metal self-tapping screws, pitch 10-15 mm. Drown the heads of the self-tapping screws into the drywall.
  2. Measure the circumference (ellipse) with a tape measure and cut off the guide profile. It should be slightly shorter than the measurement, taking into account the installed side profiles.
  3. To bend the U-shaped profile on the edges with a step of 1.5-5 cm, make cuts.
  4. Bend the profile and attach it to the plasterboard walls from the inside.

  1. Cut a strip of drywall to the measured cutout length and arch (opening) width.
  2. Bend the strip dry (cross cuts) or wet. As a template for the wet method, you can use any suitable material, it should be in the shape of an arch. For example, fragments (see figure) after cutting out the side walls or the walls themselves, then you need to do this before installing them (the order of this instruction changes slightly). If the radius is large, you can simply install the strip, sequentially screwing it to the profile.
  3. After drying (about half a day), attach the strip to the guides.

The arch is ready. It remains only to putty it, you can glue the joints and corners with sickle before that. After the final finishing of the room, install a plastic corner on the edges (optional).

The main characteristic feature of the arches is that they always look advantageous in the interior, both classic and modern. This architectural element allows you to visually combine several rooms, which to some extent softens the overall impression of small apartments.

The arch in the kitchen is very practical, because with the advent of powerful hoods, the need for a door has completely disappeared. The same element, installed in the opening leading to warm loggia, actually unites the space and makes the adjacent room noticeably more spacious. Thanks to the expansion of the opening, it is also possible to increase the degree of insolation, which is important.

In this article we will tell you how to make an arch in a doorway yourself from different materials.

arch types

Immediately before you get down to business, you must definitely decide what shape your arch will be. Accurate and correct selection of the option will ensure the harmony of the overall appearance of the apartment and combine aesthetics with practicality.

When choosing the type of arch, you need to take into account the following points:

  • room height;
  • the width of the existing opening;
  • the material from which the walls are built.

So the correct (semicircular) arch does not look good in a room where the floor-to-ceiling distance is 250 cm, unless the opening is narrow (up to 70 cm). This the option fits perfectly into high rooms (3 meters or more).

The classic arch should have a bend equal in depth to ½ of the width of the opening. That is, if the last 80 centimeters, then the radius of the arch will be - 40.

In the presence of a wide passage and low ceilings, it is advisable to build a straight portal, the arched element here will look too unnatural. Alternatively, it can be narrowed by placing open shelving on the sides (or only on one side).

The easiest way is to choose the shape of the arch if the wall is only planned to be built. Here the choice is practically unlimited. The openings can be wavy, trapezoidal. It is acceptable to make it completely round in Asian style.

materials

In reality, the arch is easy to build from a variety of materials:

  • brick;
  • wood;
  • Chipboard and MDF;
  • metal;
  • drywall;
  • plywood;
  • plastic.

In the conditions of an apartment, capital arches are not erected, and therefore they are most often made of wood, plasterboard or plastic.

Preparatory work

First of all, the opening should be freed from old door. It is dismantled along with the box. The internal surfaces are cleaned of the remnants of the solution, dust-free and thoroughly primed. If there are irregularities, they are eliminated.

Next, it's time to determine what type of arch in your particular case is best suited. To do this, you can cut out several options from cardboard and, by attaching them to the opening, see what will look more harmonious.

If you don’t have the desire to mess around for a long time yourself, get a ready-made arched portal at a hardware store. The following materials are currently available:

  • plastic;
  • tree.

The last option is the most expensive.

clapboard

It is not difficult to build an arch if the room is trimmed with clapboard. In this case, however, you will have to install it on the wall of the adjacent room, but such accent elements are very popular today.

In this case, the base of the arch is cut out of chipboard (not thinner than 18 mm). It should clearly fit into the dimensions of the opening. It is strengthened there using trimming bars installed across the sidewalls. Then the walls are sheathed with decorative strips, cut to shape. The inner vault is sealed with either flexible plywood or pieces of lining. Here you can set the backlight, but only LED bulbs are allowed in it.

Drywall

In order to veneer the GKL opening correctly, it is necessary to knock down a layer of plaster from the wall above the future arch - this will allow you to place the sheet flush with it. The drywall blank is cut out so that it protrudes at least 15 cm above the opening, on the sides - 5 cm on each side.

The profile is needed only to stiffen the circle itself. To do this, take the type UD. In it, with the help of scissors, cuts are made at least every 20 mm, so that only one side wall remains intact. As a result, you will get a flexible part that can be easily adjusted to the shape of the arch.

In a rectangle prepared from drywall, whose size is 15 cm larger than the future arch in height and 10 in width, two points are marked 50 mm from the edge.

Next, using a pencil on a string, the outlines of the bend are applied, holding the end of the string along the center of the lower edge of the piece of plasterboard, starting from one of the above marks. If the arch is made incorrect (sloping), then the place of fixation of the thread is moved back below the edge of the workpiece.

Then, along the drawn line, drywall is cut with an electric jigsaw or an ordinary hacksaw blade for metal (it will not work on wood - too large teeth severely damage the edge). It is advisable to put two blanks together at once and cut out the excess in one fell swoop.

A profile is screwed to the rounded end of the GKL with self-tapping screws, not reaching the edge of 1.5 cm, so that the strip with which you will close the arch along the end “drowns”.

Next, the surface of the wall, freed from plaster and primed, is covered with a layer of glue (Perlfix is the best) using a notched trowel. A piece of GKL is pressed against it and lightly slapped with the palm of your hand. Additionally, it is fixed with several dowels. On the other side of the wall, a second arch element is installed.

When the glue dries, jumpers are mounted between the profiles for rigidity. The end is sheathed with a strip of drywall, notched from the inside across, through 2 centimeters and broken.

All seams are sealed with special glue (Fügenfüller) and glued with fiberglass. The edges are protected by a flexible corner. The sides of the opening are also lined with plasterboard strips and reinforced.

The last stage of work is puttying and painting.
