How to make a drain from sewer pipes with your own hands? Do-it-yourself installation of a drainage system - installing gutters for a roof What materials and tools will be required

It is impossible to do without drainage systems fixed on the roof of the house if you do not want rain streams flowing down from the height of the roof to spray onto the walls and undermine the foundation. A spillway from the roof with your own hands can be assembled by purchasing ready-made systems from well-known companies, or you can do it yourself, for example, their galvanized sheet or even from plastic sewer pipes.

By purchasing professionally made and constructively thought-out kits, you can select all the necessary elements for them - from small fasteners to complex corners and joints.

If a decision is made, then you will have to try and think carefully about what the elements of this system will be made of and how functional they will become.

What gutter systems are made of

The most popular materials for the manufacture of gutters are currently special polymers that can easily withstand low and high temperatures, as well as their sudden changes. Such systems are manufactured by companies specializing in the development of plastic products for construction and exterior decoration of buildings. Kits of professionally made systems are quite expensive, and they are mainly installed on the roofs of respectable mansions and less often in ordinary houses of the private sector, although they are capable of transforming any structure.

Galvanized steel gutters - a kind of "classic of the genre"

Since time immemorial, gutter systems have been made of galvanized metal. Such items are usually ordered from tinsmiths or purchased from specialized stores. Metal gutters are more affordable, and therefore they are used more often.Despite the low price compared to other systems, and, perhaps, not so aesthetic appearance, galvanized gutters have their positive sides, in which they even surpass similar kits made of plastic or metal alloys. The main disadvantage of galvanized systems can be called the divergence of the connecting seams during temperature changes. However, a lot here depends on the skill of the tinsmith who makes them.

Steel gutters can be coated with a layer of highly resistant polymer paint. This significantly improves their decorative characteristics and provides additional protection against corrosion.

Virtually "eternal" gutters made of zinc-titanium alloy

Gutter systems are also made of a metal alloy called zinc-titanium, which are also coated with polymer paints at the final stage of production. The content of pure zinc in the alloy reaches 98 - 99% - a guarantee of corrosion resistance, the addition of titanium is a condition for the strength of products, and very small inclusions of aluminum and copper give this material high plasticity during processing.

Such gutter systems look as aesthetically pleasing as plastic ones, but they are more reliable, since they better withstand the influence of the external environment. Their external disadvantages, with poor-quality coating, include the possible peeling of the polymer coating, therefore, stopping at this option, it is better to purchase kits from a trusted manufacturer that enjoys a stable reputation.

All of the above materials are well suited for gutters - they are easy to process, assemble and look neat, organically merging with the exterior of the building and at the same time becoming both a necessary functional part of the structure and an important addition to its design.

The main elements of the drainage system

If the gutters are purchased in a store, you do not have to think about how and from what to make one of the elements of the system - the manufacturer has already thought through all the nuances of the roof structure. Having measured and clarified all the parameters at your own home, you can buy all the necessary parts.

Despite the variety of options for drainage systems, they all have approximately general structure and consist of similar structural parts:

1. Gutter - the main part of the drain, which collects the water flowing down from the roof slopes. Usually gutters are made up to 4 meters long.

2. Hooks-brackets on which the gutter is laid. Plastic brackets are commonly used for systems also made from polymers.

3. Cover cap for the edge of the gutter for the right and left side.

4. Funnels installed at the edges of the gutters.

5. Central funnel, fixed with glue or with grooves and seals (5a).

6. Connecting piece (sleeve) for the gutter. It can also be mounted with glue or with a clever groove connection using gaskets (6a) ..

7. Universal connecting angle of 90º external and internal (7a).

8. Downpipe with connecting clutch

9. A screw clamp that tightens the coupling of pipes and other elements.

10. Tee connecting two drainpipes.

11. Reducing coupling - used when it is necessary to connect pipes of different diameters.

12 and 13. Bends (elbows) for connecting drainpipes. Usually they have an angle of 60 ÷ 70º - different manufacturers can use own standards. It is clear that in one system there must be elements with the same angle values.

14. End bend with an angle of 45 º - for direction waste water into the storm sewer inlet. This detail is also called a mark.

15. Hook-bracket made of metal.

In addition to the elements presented, for some drainage systems, instead of brackets, the kit includes a cornice strip, which is an additional holder for brackets or even performs their function itself.

Before going to the store, you need to draw up a drawing of the roof edge with all the turns and protrusions, while measuring the corners. A drawing with detailed parameters of the drain must be provided to a specialist who should help select all the necessary elements for a complete set.

Independent production of drainage elements

1. If a system made of galvanized metal is installed, then, in order to save money, the gutters can be made independently, since the sheets of material are much cheaper than the finished elements.

You can make a semicircular or square gutter from galvanized steel, but a semicircular shape is still considered traditional.

It is easy to shape a thin sheet of metal along a pipe of the required diameter by making special bends at the edges so that they are securely held on the brackets.

If it turns out to make a gutter for the drain, then making the brackets also will not amount to tons of ore. Their semicircle should have a slightly larger radius as the gutter should fit easily and securely in the bracket.

It is not difficult to make a box gutter from galvanized metal. Its shape is deduced from a wooden block. the right size... One of the sides is made a little larger and bent to the side so that the flowing water falls into the right place. Then, its edges are folded in a special way.

2. If you want to make a drain only on a straight section to the lynch, then the gutter can also be made of plastic sewer pipes. Such gutters will cost, in terms of price, almost nothing, since two gutters are obtained from one pipe at once.

  • The pipe at the beginning and end is fixed on two boards with self-tapping screws, in its upper part, exactly opposite the lower fixation points, one more self-tapping screw is not completely screwed in. On their protruding parts, a thin rope, a straight line is marked along it. According to this marking, using a grinder, the pipe is cut from start to finish.
  • Then the pipe is turned over and the process is repeated. Thus, you get two halves, which will serve as gutters. When assembling, individual parts can be twisted from the inside with self-tapping screws. Using sewer pipes, from the same system you can take and corner pieces, also sawing them lengthwise.

Of course, homemade parts will not look as spectacular as professionally made ones, but you can save a decent amount on this.

3. If you wish, you can pick up other components to assemble the whole complex, since at present you can find many suitable materials, which will serve as blanks. The only parts you still need to order or buy are the funnels. It is rather difficult to make them on your own without having experience in tin work.

Installation of the drainage system

The installation of the system is carried out in different ways, depending on the selected mounts and the installation period.

Installation on the extreme beam or rafter is considered optimal. pitched roof before laying and fixing the roof covering.

In the presented diagram, you can clearly see how the brackets are fixed and closed with a cornice strip. In this case, it is a kind of shield for the soffit, protecting it from direct moisture penetration.

In other cases, the eaves strip is made from a board, and if the brackets are not fixed before laying the roof, then they are attached to it.

Sometimes gutter brackets are attached to the bottom of the ramp directly onto the roof, but this is not quite the right option.

Wherever the brackets for the gutters are fixed, their location must be calculated in such a way that the water flowing from the roof in a large stream falls into this channel, and does not spill beyond it.

This parameter depends on how much the roof edge protrudes. If it goes out to a sufficiently large distance, sometimes it makes sense to name the version of the fastening installed on the roof itself.

Video: an example of calculating and installing a drainage system at home

So, having purchased or made a suitable drainage system, you can proceed with its installation.

1. The first step is to install the gutter brackets.

They are fixed at a distance of 550 600 mm apart, with a slight slope towards the drain. The brackets must be fixed in such a way that the overhang of the roof is on gutter 1/3 the size of a semicircle, and 2/3 of the gutters will "catch" water from the roof.

If the brackets are fixed to a wooden cornice plank, then in order to visually see the slope and the line of fixing, the following actions are carried out:

- First, a bracket is installed that will support the highest edge of the gutter, taking into account all the rules and recommendations.

- The next step is to secure the last bracket in the row. It is fixed with a slope of 4-5 mm per meter. Incorrectly calculated and installed system will not work effectively, and over time, leaks will certainly appear in it.

- Then, the brackets are fixed in the marked places. Thus, the required overall slope of the gutter will be observed. gutters

  • The gutter is laid and assembled, and a plug is installed on its raised edge.

  • If a funnel will be installed at the end and in the middle of the gutter, and it is necessary to make a hole for it corresponding to the size of the funnel, then it is installed on the gutter and fixed.

  • An additional middle funnel is installed if the length of the side of the house exceeds 12 meters. If it is shorter, then it is enough to install this element only at the end of the gutter, in its lower part.
  • The gutter is fixed by sliding the groove on its edge onto the bracket protrusion.
  • If a ready-made gutter system is installed, then the individual parts of the gutter are fastened together with special connecting parts, which provide for an exact mating and a corresponding seal. If the system is made independently, then the gutters are overlapped and twisted with self-tapping screws. In this case, it is also not superfluous to provide a thin sealing gasket, for example, made of a rubber strip.
  • When the drain channel is laid and funnels are installed in it, drain pipes and elbows are mounted to them, which are pulled together in the joints with clamps. Downpipes are fastened to the wall with clamps. The use of elbows will allow the pipes to be positioned along the wall so that the clamp posts are not too bulging.

  • If the water from the roof goes into the ground, then the drain pipe fixed to the wall should end at 300 350 mm from the ground.
  • If for collection and disposal rain or melt water around the house is a storm sewer, then chimney from the roof sometimes connect directly to it, or place the edge of the drain pipe with a mark directly above the opening of the storm water inlet or the catchment tray.

Something that many people forget or simply don’t know about. It is highly advisable to install a protective mesh on the gutter, which will not allow large debris and fallen leaves to collect at its bottom. In prefabricated systems, it is usually provided in the form of a strip that is attached to the edges of the gutter.

For a home-made system, you can purchase a grid by the footage, and put it in a gutter, rolling it into a roll, which is fastened with special plastic clamps.

You can make such a "filter" yourself, rolling the mesh into a tube along the diameter of the drain

Video: an important element of the drainage system is a mesh to protect against large debris

Whatever drainage system is installed on the roof of the house, it needs periodic monitoring and regular preventive cleaning. Even if a grid is installed on the gutter, it must sometimes be washed, since a large amount of dust and dirt gets into the drains from the roof of the rum of large fragments from the roof, and the sodden fallen leaves themselves, falling on the grid, are not always blown away by the wind. If the drain system is clogged, all the water accumulating in it, together with dirt, will one day end up on the walls of the house.

Taking on the installation of a finished system or for the independent manufacture of a drain, you need to correctly calculate all the parameters and slopes, make a drawing and, of course, evaluate your strengths in performing this work. If you are not sure that it will be made with the proper quality, it is better to seek help from specialists.

In order to save money, the drainage system can be made independently from scrap materials. In this case, they use not only purchased pipes, gutters, other plastic or galvanized parts, but also ordinary plastic bottles. With a responsible approach to work, a self-made drain in a private house will last up to 10 years.

Creation of a drainage complex

The simplest gutter structure is made of plastic pipes

The easiest way to assemble it is from plastic pipes. They are inexpensive, easy to process, and the range of suitable parts is wide. It is also realistic to create a galvanized drainage system. If you do not want to spend money, you can take plastic bottles for armament.

Sometimes drainage systems are also installed from wood. Pine, larch or fir are suitable for these purposes. Carpentry skills and significant material costs will be required, since high-quality wood is expensive.

Drawing up a diagram and carrying out calculations

When creating a drainage system from any materials, they first of all make up detailed drawing future structure. To do this, measure the roof around the perimeter and take into account the height of the building. When drawing up the scheme, it is taken into account:

  • length of the roof overhang;
  • the total number of funnels and drain pipes - they are located at the corners and every 10 meters of the overhang;
  • slope of gutters (3-5 mm);
  • distance between pipe holders - up to 1.5 m;
  • the height of the bottom drain above the ground is 30 cm.

For arrangement drainage system it is necessary to correctly make all the calculations and plan the purchase of building materials, which will avoid unnecessary costs. First of all, the roofing area is calculated and determined with the dimensions of the gutter parts:

The total number of gutter segments is determined depending on the sum of the lengths of the eaves overhangs of all roof slopes on which the system is installed. Since a standard gutter is 3 or 4 m long, and from galvanized it is 2 m, the resulting amount must be divided by 2, 3, 4. The number of pipes is calculated based on the distance from the ground to the roof and the number of drains to be installed.

Installation of polymer gutters

To make a drainage from the roof with your own hands, you will need:

  • sewer pipes for creating gutters;
  • pipe elements for vertical parts of the drainage structure;
  • tees and adapters for joining construction parts;
  • sealing material;
  • strips of metal sheets for suspensions.

From the tools for arranging the drainage system with your own hands, you will need an angle grinder with a disc for cutting metal, electric jigsaw, construction cord, screwdriver, self-tapping screws.

To make a gutter piece from a previously purchased sewer pipe, you need to cut it in half using UGShM. If this is not possible, use a cloth from a hacksaw for metal. You can also make wood patterns to create gutters of the same size.

It is better not to cut the sections of the pipe at the points of connection of the risers - this way the structure will be stronger. It is quite enough 150-200 mm on each side of the drain pipe. A hole in the groove section can be cut with a jigsaw.

The connection of the gutter sections is carried out with a special silicone sealant or with aluminum clips. Semicircles made of plastic sheet are glued as plugs.

Before you start assembling the gutter, you will need to make brackets. They are made of metal strips, bending in the shape of the drainage system.

The assembly of the entire structure is carried out after the installation of the holders, which are fixed with self-tapping screws on the cornice board or support rafters. To maintain the required slope, use a construction cord. Tees are installed in the places where the drainage system is connected to the risers, not forgetting to seal the joints.

Galvanized steel systems

Galvanized steel gutter

Self-creation of gutters and galvanized pipes with your own hands is quite possible. You will need a metal sheet half a centimeter thick, metal scissors, a hammer, pliers and a marker.

According to a preliminary design, a galvanized sheet is marked, after which the outlined elements are cut out.

The cut strips are given the required shape using a mallet and pliers. To facilitate this task, as well as more accurate execution, pre-made templates from wood or pipe will be required.

Weirs from plastic bottles

Gutter and downpipe made of plastic bottles

It is quite possible to make gutters and downpipes from plastic bottles. They will last a year or a little longer. But with a minimum of cash investment, this option will help to cope with excess moisture in the off-season.

To create a drain you will need:

  • plastic bottles;
  • scissors;
  • electric drill;
  • stationery stapler with staples;
  • thin wire.

Only a non-embossed cylinder-shaped container is suitable, since the ribbing will lead to a quick blockage of the system.

To calculate the number of bottles and determine the slope angle of the gutter, it is necessary to measure the length of the drainage system along the entire perimeter of the roof. Following actions:

  1. Peel off the labels and cut off the bottoms and necks of the bottles.
  2. Cut the resulting cylindrical elements along the seam with scissors.
  3. Fasten the rectangles with an overlap using a stapler.

On the roof, the gutter structure is fixed with wire through holes drilled in the slate or metal tile.

The weir installation process is simple. The neck from one bottle is inserted into the place where the bottom of the other is cut, after which the edge of the groove segment is installed into it. As a riser, cylinders fastened together with a stapler or necks connected by a wire, creating the effect of watering cans, are used.

As a temporary roof drainage system, this is the most cost-effective option. The material at hand is free, and the time and labor costs are minimal.

Operation and maintenance

Cleaning the drain with water pressure

The drainage complex requires a systematic check. Regular cleaning of the gutter can help identify problems. Inspection of drainage systems is required at least once a year. Traditionally, cleaning is done in the spring, which is the best time to remove leaves and debris.

Cleaning of the weir is started from the gutter elements. Cleaning is carried out with a soft brush, and then washed with water. Sharp objects are not allowed as they can damage the protective coating. After that, you can start checking the patency of the weir risers. Flushing is carried out with a water jet under pressure (for example, from a hose).

Installation errors can cause system problems. The wrong choice of the section of pipe sections and the number of funnels will not allow you to cope with a large water flow. If the chimney is very close to the wall of the house, it will cause the surface to get wet. Horizontal installation of gutter sections causes water accumulation and overflow of these elements. This is especially dangerous in winter, when frozen moisture can damage the elements of the system.

If you avoid mistakes and approach self-assembly the drainage complex is responsible, it will last almost as long as the purchased one.

In the entire Russian climate, frequent precipitation is far from uncommon. And therefore, it is customary to arrange a drain in dwellings, which controls and removes this precipitation from the roof itself further away. If the house stands for a long time without a drainage system, its basement, facade and walls are destroyed. There are more long-term consequences: a flooded basement, eroded land around the house, and other problems. This is why there must always be a drain!

But if you have just purchased a house or cottage and you have a limited budget, you can temporarily make a drain from sewer pipes with your own hands: it is not difficult, and in practice such a system will be reliable. But such small buildings as a gazebo, children's house in the garden or carport over the car, a homemade gutter is quite suitable as the main one. And we will teach you how to do everything right!

You like the idea, but are you worried how much the sewer pipes will be able to withstand the outside atmosphere? After all, they are designed to drain water from the house, and mainly underground, and the manufacturer is unlikely to take care that such plastic material well tolerated ultraviolet rays. But, in fact, many summer residents notice that trimming gray and brown pipes feel great under the open sun for quite a few years.

Moreover, due to the relative cheapness of sewer pipes, you can construct gutters of the most complex shapes and most different purposes from them:

Your homemade gutter will serve you faithfully and truly no less than an industrial one, if you choose the right material for it. Sewer pipes are completely different types, for different parts of the drainage system. After all, you know that there is an internal and external gutter, and the first is mainly used only for flat roofs. It is just well hidden from the sun's rays, and therefore almost any sewer pipes are suitable for its device.

But for a gable or shed roof it is important for you to learn to understand the material.

White pipes - for indoor gutters

White pipes are also used for the installation of indoor sewerage systems. Their material is designed mainly for high water temperatures and has a high level of sound insulation.

White pipes can be used as a drain only in those areas where winters are warm and mild, because such plastic will not withstand sudden changes in temperature. So forget about this option for now.

Gray pipes - for warm winters

Gray pipes are most common. They are also used inside the house, but their plastic is already stronger. It is designed for high temperatures, but does not tolerate frost and physical activity.

Therefore, if you live in the southern regions of Russia, where the climate is rather mild and there is almost no frost, there will be no problem for you: how to make a drain from sewer pipes of this color and how long will it serve you. Just do not forget to constantly clean them of snow and ice, so as not to crumble.

Brown pipes - for severe frosts

But brown pipes are used when installing sewerage systems already outside. They are distinguished by a thick wall, which perfectly tolerates sub-zero temperatures and high pressure water mass.

The only thing such pipes are not adapted to is the hot temperature of the water. After all, it is calculated that sewage water from the house, before it enters the brown pipes, after the white and gray ones, is already cooling down, plus the cooler air temperature outside will complete its business. Such pipes perfectly withstand the loads from snow and ice, are strong enough, but cannot withstand direct sunlight for a long time and become fragile over time.

Here's a cute gutter that comes out of a brown sewer pipe:

Home craftsmen are especially pleased with the fact that the price for one sewer pipe is less than for a gutter of the same length. But from one pipe, two whole gutters are obtained!

How to design a future drainage system?

In terms of language, a drainage system is a complex of gutters and pipes that collects and removes water from the roof. A drainage system, or drain, is also often called a separate gutter or pipe. And now let's figure out how to make a good drain for the house from the pipes you have purchased. First you will need to draw up a sketch and calculate the dimensions of all parts.

How to make a gutter for a pitched roof?

So, you will need a certain number of gutters, which are easy to calculate based on the parameters of the roof perimeter. You will install brackets for every 10 meters, 17 pieces. The bend has exactly the same length as the drain pipes in total. You will also need funnels, pipes, 1 piece for every 10 meters, corner elements, a plug, couplings (exactly 2 times fewer pieces than gutters), elbows, the number of which will depend on the complexity of the eastern system itself.

For you, the easiest option would be to simply put a diagram of the future water supply system on a sheet of paper. So, it is customary to install outlet pipes with funnels every 12 meters. If the side of the house is smaller, place them in the corners, and only two of them will be enough. Take drain pipes with a diameter of 50 millimeters, and purchase a transition tee 110 by 50 mm. The size of one drain can be 10 centimeters, which is quite enough for the roof of a private house. From one spigot, you get two trays of the same size.

Further, you will need to plug each end of the gutter. Take a revision plug or a regular one cut into two parts. When you already have all the elements on the sheet, count the total:

  • When the area of the roof slope is up to 50 square meters you will need a pipe with a diameter of 80 millimeters.
  • With 125 square meters, this is already 90 millimeters.
  • For more than 125 square meters, you need to take a pipe of 100 millimeters.

You will choose funnels and adapters, having already decided on the diameter of the pipes. Therefore, at this stage, already draw up a sketch of the future water supply system and mark suitable places for the location of drains and mounting gutters. As soon as you have the whole scheme ready, you can purchase the material.

How to make a flat roof gutter?

So let's figure out how to make and install a flat roof sewer gutter. Yes it is possible! There is a big bonus here: the gutter will be built into the wall, and it will not be outside. Therefore, sewer plastics are not afraid of frost or destructive UV rays.

Your main task is to make sure that water flows easily from the roof to one place, in its center. This is where you need to install a drain pipe, or even several. The only thing you have to take care of is to insulate such a pipe, or place it in special insulation so that condensation does not collect on it. And after installing the funnel, simply cover it with a grate so that it does not get clogged.

How to make a mount for a homemade gutter?

You will need brackets to secure your homemade gutter. You can purchase them ready-made or you can make them yourself. The only difference is that many species ready-made bracket designed for the same finished downpipes.

See how the edges are folded back so the bracket can easily snap into place. But if you attach a simply cut sewer pipe, it does not have such a rim on the side. Therefore, it is better to purchase one bracket for a sample, and try on a pipe - will it hold? That is why, when making homemade gutters, many craftsmen make the brackets themselves - these are more suitable and often turn out to be even more reliable.

Ready-made brackets for gutter systems

Finished metal brackets need to be bent using a special device so as not to damage polymer coating... After all, if small microcracks appear, water will easily get into them and corrosion will begin. And this already significantly reduces the reliability of the entire drainage system!

And here are the ready-made plastic hooks on a homemade gutter system:

Such a mount is well suited for organizing gazebos drainage:

Homemade fasteners: select and manufacture

And the strong fasteners that come with the sewer pipes are quite suitable for the drain. Moreover, they are designed to withstand the weight of water, and therefore are more durable, and go well with the color of the pipes themselves:

If you are going to make the mount with your own hands, you better get a special hook, or at least a small vice. Once you have hammered in one hook, present it to the overhang and check the bend angle. The gutter mounted on it must then be located strictly perpendicular to the ground. It is important to bend the bracket so that the front edge of the gutters is only 2 mm below the rear edge. This is the only way water, if it overflows the gutter, will come out through the external screens, and not flow down the walls of the house.

Bending hooks with a regular vise is a grueling exercise. The fact is that the clicks of the vise do not fully clamp the holder. Therefore, experienced craftsmen prefer to make the tool for bending metal gutter holders on their own. Here is the simplest instruction:

  • Step 1. We take an ordinary metal corner with a wall thickness of at least 6 mm, or a channel of the same parameters.
  • Step 2. In the channel with a grinder, a slot is so long that it is equal to the width of the gutter holder.
  • Step 3. Take square tube, in which the inner walls are slightly larger than the width of the gutter holder.
  • Step 4. Now mark the folds on all the holders. After that, we put the holder in the square pipe, take wooden block and with effort we insert it into the pipe.
  • Step 5. Set the required fold angle.
  • Step 6. Now insert the holder into the slot and align it to the designated fold.
  • Step 7. Now we knock out the block with another piece of wood from the opposite end of the pipe.
  • Step 8. If the paint was already on the handle, it will crack a little too, but it can be tweaked. But in the final result, the quality of the joke will be much higher than that curved with the help of a vice.

By the way, here is a great master class on how to make such hooks even faster and easier:

Another interesting option bend the hook:

  • Step 1. We make a very small risk with a grinder with a depth of 1 to 2 millimeters.
  • Step 2. We nail one nail or one self-tapping screw through the hook into the rafter and bend the hook itself. It will bend exactly along the filed line, and will not break over time.

Once all the fasteners are ready, walk around your house and see how best you can fix it all.

Of course, it is advisable to install the gutter even before you cover the roof. The following illustration will help you figure out how to mount the mount:

Conversion of pipes into drainage elements

Now we will prepare the pipes themselves for the sewage. You will need to cut them lengthwise. From one pipe, you will have two excellent identical complaints. In practice, everything is pretty simple! To get a smooth cut, follow these instructions:

  • Step 1. Lay the pipe down on the boards, and attach the wall at the bottom with a self-tapping screw at both ends.
  • Step 2. Connect the screws with a thick thread and use a permanent marker to mark the place where you will cut the pipe.
  • Step 3. Remove the thread and cut the pipe with a grinder.
  • Step 4. Now do everything in the same way on the other side. The only difference is that you will now need two screws.

Here is a great step by step master class:

Our tip: if you are working with a grinder, be careful! The molten plastic is actually very hot and can even burn your hands. And flying particles can hurt your eyes. Therefore, be sure to wear gloves and safety glasses when cutting the sewer pipes. As home craftsmen note, sewer pipes are also easily cut with a jigsaw or a wood saw, and the whole difficulty lies only in the correct marking of the longitudinal marks for cutting. But the most convenient, of course, is to make gutters from sewer pipes with a grinder with a thin circle for metal.

And connect ready-made elements simple enough:

You will be interested to know that instead of ugly vertical pipes, you can use ... chains. This is a fairly popular way! The principles for constructing such a drain are quite simple: the chain must be tightly connected to the gutter and base.

At the same time, it is pulled so that it cannot move to the side, and for this, it is most often buried in a concrete base or in the ground. A small canopy protects the facade from splashing water. Looks awesome!

The advantage of such "gutters" is that they are less noticeable against the background of the house and do not interfere with its exterior. In addition, they are usually complemented by spectacular decorative elements... Moreover, today it is fashionable not only to lower the chains down, but to create complex spatial forms from them, and even alternate with decorative bowls made of ceramics or plastic.

The only inconvenience is that modern manufacturers of plastic gutters do not produce special elements for connecting gutters to a chain. But, since you make your gutter yourself, and you yourself are already acting as a manufacturer, then there is no limit for your imagination! And it’s convenient: you will have to tinker with cutting and connecting only the horizontal elements of the drainage system, and then lower the elements of beauty. Why not?

Stage # 2 - installation work

Now we will install our drain from the sewer pipes:

  • Step 1. First, the shortest and longest bracket must be fixed to the front eaves board.
  • Step 2. After that, connect the gutters with a slope of 3 mm for every 50 cm so that rainwater arrived to the very center. Please note that the edge of the roof must be in the middle of the gutter so that snow and ice do not damage the gutters in winter and the rainwater itself hits the target.
  • Step 3. Once all horizontal gutters are ready, install water drainage pipes.
  • Step 4. Fix such pipes to the wall, and leave a gap of 20 to 80 centimeters between them and the complaints. There will be a tee and elbow, which will provide the transition from the gutter to the pipe.
  • Step 5. Now cut two pieces of pipe, 5 centimeters each, which will serve as your connectors. Install each connector and secure with self-tapping screws. Lubricate the attachment points with silicone sealant to protect them from rainwater.
  • Step 6. Fix the vertical pipes to the wall using brackets with clamps. For every meter of such pipes, you only need two fasteners, which is not a lot.
  • Step 7. And at the very end of the pipe, at the bottom, install a branch elbow. This is necessary so that water does not fall under the foundation. It should be located at a minimum distance of 30 cm from the wall.
  • Step 8. Finally, close the end of the gutter with plugs, which simply cut in half.

Here is how it looks like installing a gutter on plastic hooks:

When installing the gutter, do not clamp too tightly all the parts: a little mobility is needed so that the whole structure changes slightly under the influence of temperatures.

Fix all the gutters on the brackets using self-tapping screws. And so that later the pipes do not twist under the influence of sunlight, fix them with antennae on the brackets, or install spacers.

At the final stage, you will need to think about how to connect your homemade gutter system to a storm sewer. To do this, an audit should be made on the drainpipe - this is a section with a hatch and gratings that will collect all the garbage from the gutters. After all, it is important that only rainwater goes into the sewer, without all this good and does not clog the subsequent more complex system.

There are also alternative options: connect additional drainage pipes, and they will already communicate with the sewer or with the storm water inlet. The advantage of the latter is that it has a valve that does not let in odors and collects large debris in a special removable basket.

Some subtleties and nuances that are important to know about

When installing a homemade drainage system from sewer pipes, keep in mind that all PVC products change their physical parameters with temperature differences. Therefore, it is very important that the gutters can move freely in the brackets. And for this, try to keep at least 9 centimeters from the junction of the gutters to the bracket. Also, the ends of the gutters must be tightly joined.

So that your downpipes, made so carefully with your own hands, do not get dirty and clogged with foliage, install a regular one on top plastic mesh... She will let water through, but no leaves and branches:

The owner of a ready-made industrial drainage system usually does not think about it, believing that manufacturers always take everything into account themselves. But when you do something with your own hands, you always want to do it with high quality, and you will not forget about such details.

This is why it turns out in practice that often homemade drainage systems are both stronger and more durable. Moreover, some craftsmen also manage to be creative, for example, to start water into their garage with the help of a drain - catch a great idea:

If you live in a region with snowy winters, install an additional heating cable in the gutters. Do not worry about the material of the sewer pipes: they are just designed for temperatures above average, so the cable will not damage them in any way.

There is one more important rule: do not install gutters at temperatures below freezing. After all, when, with the onset of spring, the air temperature rises higher, the pipes will simply twist. In any case, even just in cool weather, it is important to calculate all expansion joints and gaps so that the system does not "play" later.

This usually does not happen because industrial versions of gutter systems have special notches inside the parts that help to correctly connect the elements at a specific air temperature. But in the case of sewer pipes, you have to do everything on a whim.

Issues of aesthetics and stylistic unity

There is such an interesting architectural element- gargoyles. These are the heads or bodies of fantastic animals with open jaws, which usually ends with a gutter. In other words, these are "terribly cute animals" on your roof.

Of course, in a ready-made industrial drainage system, such decorative aspects are rarely implemented, there is more emphasis on practicality. But, if you do the gutter yourself, why not design it more spectacular, agree?

During construction country house immediately before installing the roof, it is necessary to install the drainage system. Its main purpose is collection and drainage of rain and melt water. This prevents collapse of the building walls and foundations. To build a drainage system, or, as it is also called, storm sewers, you can use ready-made structures that are sold in specialized companies. But if you want to save money, it is much cheaper to make a drain from sewer pipes with your own hands. But here you will have to make a lot of effort with preliminary calculations.

Manufacturing technology

Sewer polymer pipes may well serve as gutters. For the manufacture of gutters, the pipe must be cut in half lengthwise with a grinder or a hacksaw. After joining them, an excellent sealed connection is formed.

Note! Sewer pipes will serve as a drainage system for many years, because they are designed for aggressive drains.

So, in order to do the work yourself, you need the following material:

  • Gutters. They will be made of Ø110 mm polypropylene sewer pipe.
  • Spillway pipes. To do this, you will need to purchase pipes Ø50 mm.
  • Tees that will connect pipes into one system. On both sides, the tee will have Ø110 mm, and on one Ø50 mm.

For the successful implementation of the work, it is important to clearly think over the design of the drainage system from the sewer pipes. To make a correct purchase, it is recommended to draw up a project. This requires:

  1. Measure the perimeter of the roof. Based on this data, you can understand how many gutters will need to be mounted. Consider the fact that purchased pipes will be cut in half, so you need to buy half as many pipes as the measurement will show.
  2. Consider a drainage system. This requires pipes Ø50 mm. Their number will be determined by the height of the building, as well as by the number of downpipes.

Note! The distance between the downspouts should be at least 5 meters on average!

Installation work

To carry out a successful installation of a drainage system from sewer pipes, it is necessary to carry out all the work in the following sequence.

First thing plastic pipesØ110 mm are sawn lengthwise. To do this, you can use a grinder. To make the gutters the same size, wooden templates are prefabricated.

The inlet pipes on the pipes should not be sawed; a distance of 15–20 cm should be left.

When the gutters are ready, you need to start installing the brackets. They are mounted on support rafters.

You can use as brackets ready-made structures which are made of durable sheet metal. You can also make the brackets yourself, but this will take more time.

Note! The bracket is mounted on each of the walls. At the same time, it is important to maintain a clear slope angle, otherwise the water will stagnate. Typically, the slope angle is 1 cm per meter of pipe.

First, mount the outer brackets, and then pull a thread between them, which will help maintain the correct slope.

Next, mounts for the downpipe are installed.

Note! The downpipe should extend from the wall by an average of 10 cm.

When all the fasteners are in place, you can assemble the gutter system into one piece. Manufactured gutters from sewer pipes can be fastened together with aluminum clips or special glue for polypropylene. When using clips, each gutter joint must be sealed with a sealant.

The assembly of the tee is carried out according to the same principle as the assembly of the sewer pipes. Also use sealant for joining.

On the most highest point of the drainage system, a plug is installed.

The entire structure can be assembled on the ground or directly on the mountings. The choice is yours. Most importantly, comply with all existing requirements regarding the assembly of a drainage system from sewer pipes.

Note! The key point will be to branch the pipe away from the building. Otherwise, water will flow into the foundation and gradually destroy it.

According to this principle, the installation of the drainage system on the roof is carried out.

Flat roof gutter construction

What if your house has flat roof... Is it possible in this case to use sewer pipes for the manufacture of a drainage system? Yes! To do this, you must first wedge the pipes into the masonry. In this case, external gutters and gutters will not be needed. The roof surface is initially made so that all the water is collected in one place. This is where the downpipe will be installed. The only condition for using sewer pipes in this version is to place them in insulation. This will prevent the occurrence of a large number condensate.

Note! To protect the pipe from clogging, the funnel can be equipped with a protective grid.

Is it possible to save on the drainage system? In search of cheap options for organizing rainwater drainage, craftsmen are trying to make parts for gutters on their own, from improvised means: plastic containers, galvanized steel sheets, pipes. Is this savings justified? What is more profitable: buy factory parts or make your own? How long will a homemade gutter last? In any case, there are only 2 ways to spend less:

  1. Save on installation and independently assemble and install the drain.
  2. Understand how to make a funnel and gutter from scrap materials, and design your own system.

System Calculation: Planning Home Gutters

At the planning stage, markings are made - they mark the installation locations of horizontal (gutters) and vertical (gutters) lines. After determining the footage, calculate the number of additional parts that are needed to assemble the system: fasteners, plugs, connectors, funnels and adapters.

The footage of the gutters and the number of funnels: how to calculate correctly

The number of horizontal lines depends on the roof structure and the length of the ramps. The simplest system of two gutters and two downpipes - the best option for a gable roof with a total area of up to 100 sq. m and a slope length not exceeding 10 m.

Scheme for calculating the number of drain lines

In this case, there is no need to make a double tilt from the center. And you can make a gutter for a gutter both from ready-made and from home-made parts. The length of the horizontal tray is equal to the length of the ramp. Diameter - 10 - 12 cm. The slope of the drain is up to 2 - 3 mm per running meter. Factory parts are produced in standard lengths - 3 m.

The number of funnels designed to drain water from the tray into the downpipe is equal to the number of horizontal lines. If the length of the straight section is more than 10 - 12 meters, then 2 funnels and 2 downpipes are installed at the edges.

The main parameters of the installation of gutters

If the total number of funnels in the planned scheme is two, then it is easy to calculate the length of the drainpipes. The height of the building from the bottom edge of the roof to ground level is multiplied by 2.

When planning more complex structures calculations are performed for straight lines, gutters and planning installation in difficult areas (on ledges, in corners) with the selection of special products - corner connectors.

Optional parts: fastening hooks and connectors

To make a gutter for the gutter, you will additionally need:

  • 2 plugs for each horizontal line.
  • Connectors - every 3 m if finished parts are connected.
  • Brackets - 10 m - 20 pcs. The distance between the hooks should be between 50 - 60 cm.

Hooks are chosen depending on the type of attachment. If a strong pediment board is installed under the roof slope, not lined with clapboard, it is more convenient to install the box on short brackets.

When fixing to the rafter sheathing, choose ready-made adjustable or non-adjustable hooks with an extension. Such fasteners can be made independently from strips of thick steel 3-4 cm wide.

To connect the funnel to the pipe, you will need 2 bends of 40 ° to bring the drain to the pipe installation line. To fasten the pipe to the walls, use special holders or clamps. Connect the pipes with couplings.

Which is cheaper: make gutters yourself or buy ready-made

After calculating the number of parts and the total length of horizontal and vertical branches, you can choose: from what and how to make a gutter and drain funnels, in order to simultaneously save money and install a system that will last at least 10 years.

Plastic PVC constructions

The easiest way to make your own gutter is to assemble a line of ready-made PVC trays and connectors. Plastic systems are cheaper than metal-polymer systems. Processing and installation does not require special skills. The material is easily cut with a hacksaw, all necessary connectors are included. No professional tools required for assembly.

The advantage of PVC gutters is aesthetics. It is possible to match the system to match roofing or sheathing color roof space... The material does not fade in the sun, it can withstand significant temperature changes.

Metal-polymer parts

Metal plastic gutters- these are steel products in a polymer sheath. The cost of metal parts is higher than plastic ones. The service life of the drain is from 30 years. The material has high strength - it can withstand loads during the convergence and melting of snow, does not crack in frost. Used in drainage systems without restrictions on temperature regime.

Working with metal-polymer parts requires preparation. Cutting molded products is carried out exclusively with special scissors or a hacksaw for metal. The use of cutting discs is not allowed - the material must not be overheated during processing.

Products are transported in a protective film. When assembling, care must be taken - damage to the polymer layer must not be allowed.

The only drawback of a metal-polymer gutter is the noise of the gutters. If you plan to install a drain on a low house with an attic, they prefer quiet polymer trays.

DIY materials for making gutter parts

To make a gutter funnel and a gutter with your own hands, use galvanized steel and plastic pipes for external sewage.

Factory gutter made of steel

Galvanized steel is sold in sheet form. Making parts requires certain metalworking skills. A system assembled from homemade products will not be durable - during cutting, a thin zinc layer is damaged, and the edges at the cutting site remain without anti-corrosion coating.

To work with steel you will need:

  • A special bending machine or wooden blanks to be used as a base for forming the gutter.

Bending the sheet onto wooden base

  • Scissors or grinder for cutting.

The sheets are cut according to the planned dimensions, bent in shape and folded over the edge for subsequent joining of the part.

The parts of the box are connected to each other in two ways: by hot soldering or by installing steel connectors, which are fixed with screws.

It is unprofitable to make gutters from steel sheets on your own. Flaws:

  • Connection difficulties due to inaccuracies in the geometry of the parts.

Special machine for working with steel

  1. Short service life - a maximum of 2 - 3 years pass before holes appear in the handicraft assembled box.
  2. The process is laborious and time consuming.

It is better to try to assemble a simple system from sewer pipes. Choose parts intended for installation outside: pipes for external sewage - orange. You will have to accept the color - white or gray pipes are intended for indoor installation, the material of manufacture is not frost-resistant, UV-resistant and high temperature resistant. Taking into account the fact that in summer the drain is in direct sunlight at a temperature of 40 ° C, and in winter - in a 20-degree frost, pipes for internal work will not be able to serve even 1 season.

Details for self-made drain

For work you will need:

  • Half of the planned footage of gutters in the form of orange sewer pipes with a diameter of 100 mm.
  • Pipe couplings - according to the number of connection points on horizontal branches.

Gutter coupling

  • Pipes for gutters in an amount equal to the estimated footage of gutters.
  • Adapters with a branch to make your own funnels for the drain.

T-piece with 90 ° elbow - for funnel

  • Elbows: 2 for each funnel.

Knee with different angles used for installation when changing direction: in corners, under a funnel

  • Plastic sealant - frost and moisture resistant, for outdoor use. You can use an acrylic or silicone based adhesive.

For convenient operation and quick installation, you can select pipes of the same diameter for gutters and gutters and thus save on waste.

How to make a gutter and fix a funnel with your own hands

To assemble and fasten the horizontal sections of the drain, you will need simple tools:

  • Ruler with level, chalk or pencil, fishing line or thread.
  • Screwdriver, self-tapping screws.

Mounting brackets: installing ready-made and homemade mounts

First of all, it is necessary to fix the brackets under the roof - the hooks that hold the trays.

When using short non-adjustable brackets, mark the extreme point on the gable board where the first fasteners will be fixed. The distance from the edge of the roof is up to 15 cm. From this point, a line with a slope is formed. The distance to the last fastener in meters is multiplied by 2. The resulting value is the height difference in millimeters between the first and the last bracket.

Distance from hook to edge of connections

Example. If the distance between the hooks is 8 m, then the height difference is 8 x 2 = 16 mm. This is the minimum acceptable slope value. The maximum is 8 x 3 = 24 mm.

Slope and calculation of the number of brackets

The installation points of the extreme elements are connected. Along the indicated line, brackets are attached in 50 cm increments.

If hooks with extension strips are installed, then after fixing the first bracket to the flooring, measure the distance between the upper edge of the board and the middle of the hook. From this point, form a slope towards the funnel.

The easy way to make the right slope

To simplify the process, you can mark the fold directly on the extension strips. Lay out a row of numbered hooks end-to-end. A straight line is drawn from the bend point of the first. On the extreme bracket, measure the required slope value and put a mark below the first line. Connect to the dot on the first element. During installation, the hooks are fixed on the line, and according to the marking, the extension cord is simply bent.

Installation of mountings with extension cords

Assembly of plastic and metal-plastic structures

Plastic trays are interconnected using special parts. The joint points are calculated so that the distance from the edge of the connector to the hook is at least 2 cm.If connectors with rubber seals are selected, then the gutter is installed so that a gap of 5 - 6 cm remains between the edges of the two connected trays. This distance is sufficient for free play parts with thermal expansion.

The second method is glue. The connector is treated with adhesive: 3 strips of sealant are applied. Two - at the edges and one central. Press the groove against the connector, remove the remaining glue.

Plastic plugs are installed at the edges of the line.

End caps, funnel and brackets at the edge of the line

The funnel is mounted according to the connector principle. Make sure that the distance from the extreme bracket to the edge of the funnel is up to 5 cm. If the factory funnel is equipped with a seal, then additional sealing is not carried out.

The connection is carried out on brackets or parts connected to the ground are installed if 2 craftsmen are working.

Instructions for the manufacture and assembly of PVC drainage pipes

When selecting sewer pipes for a homemade drain, pay attention to 2 important points:

  1. Choose products of the middle price category - preferably from frost-resistant PVC for laying in the ground.
  2. Do not skimp on connectors - they must be of the same material as the pipes (orange, outdoor), from the same manufacturer.

How to make a gutter from a regular sewer pipe? Cut along the pipe exactly in the center: you will get two grooves 3 m long. For gutters, it is better to buy pipes without connecting sockets.

Slope of the gutter from the sewer pipes

For cutting, use a hacksaw, jigsaw, or grinder with a disc (preferably with large teeth).

Roof tray with connector

The couplings are also cut in half - 2 gutter connectors are obtained. There is a seal inside the coupling - it is cut separately and placed in the part.

Marking for cutting pipes and joining parts

The joints must be sealed with acrylic or silicone construction sealant.

What to make a stub out of? When buying tees for funnels, choose products with decorative lids. The lid must be cut into 2 halves, glued with sealant to the edges of the tray.

Tee with factory cover on the thread

Just like the connector cut upper part tee. The product is cut so that the outlet is under the groove. Fix the funnel with sealant or screws. A knee is connected to the lower branch with the bell up.

Artistic homemade funnel from a sewer tee

The pipe is assembled from pipes with connecting sockets. On the upper pipe, you need to install a branch at 40 - 90 ° to connect the drain to the gutter. Measure the length of the segment between the knees. Cut a piece of pipe without sockets and connect the system.

In the lower part, a bend is installed - a knee, the part is cut off so that the drain falls into the center of the storm water inlet or into the ground, at a distance of 40-50 cm from the edge of the blind area.

Video: how to make a gutter for a drain from a sewer pipe

Is it worth saving on the drain? If the roof structure is simple gable or four-pitched, you can save on installation works... The savings on material are highly questionable. Considering that even expensive outdoor sewer pipes are designed to be installed in the ground, and not outdoors, it is impossible to predict how long a homemade system will last. In addition to fragility, there is another drawback: a very controversial appearance constructions. Such drains are suitable only for temporary outbuildings in the country.

Low-cost plastic gutters are designed for year-round use in all weather conditions. Special connectors, brackets and adapters make the installation process easier. And if you choose glueless connectors, you will be able to assemble the system in a couple of hours.
